Hi All,
I have a weird problem that I cannot find the culprit to. I have just noticed that for the last few months my Operator has started charging me HUGE amounts of money for excessive data usage (over my 500MB call plan limit).
I've downloaded SPB Wireless Monitor to investigate, and this has identified that "Messaging" (which I assume to be mobile outlook?) is downloading approx 60MB per day. And... I don't know why.
I have 3 email accounts synced (2x IMAP GMAIL and a Hotmail).
I generally have between 10-20 emails per account per day.
I've set the email accounts to only download text (no images).
I've told it NOT to download attachments.
I've checked everything that I can think of, but I can't understand where all this excess data is coming from.
On odd occassions over the last week.... I have seen notifications in mOutlook such as "downloading 39/400...". To me, this implies that (for some unknown reason) it may be completely re-downloading all messages in all inboxes?
Any ideas? This is driving me crazy (and costing me a fortune).
I haven't spoken to my mobile operator yet, since I want to rule out any errors on my part (or maybe a known hiccup in my Dutty's ROM).
Any suggestions, tweaks, hidden settings... PLEASE help.
Thanks,
Flid
HTC Blackstone (Touch HD)
Dutty ROM V3.9 XT
Ok.
I've done a bit more hunting and checked every setting I could find. Nothing seems obvious. Sifting through my HTC via my desktop PC, I have discovered various folders that imply message storage (ie. \Windows\Messaging and .\Attachments etc), so it doesn't appear to be a case of IMAP not saving recent emails.
However... I had another idea. I remember manually choosing to sync a specific folder that I have on my work gmail account. This folder is pre-filtered by googlemail and the contents don't show up in my main Inbox (obviously). However, since I needed to check this folder on a regular basis, I found that you can add folders to sync in the mOutlook settings. However... this has always been a problem, since most of the time, when selecting a message, it states "Attachments will download next time you connect and receive email". If I then force a "Send/Receive", it tries to download all 396 emails in that folder again!!! Sometimes it gives me my attachments, but mostly it never does.
This may be the culprit.
I'm guessing it is trying to download the messages... fails... and then retries every two hours (as per my sync settings). This could explain the HUGE amount of data.
Does this seem correct to anyone?
Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Is there a known problem with getting mOutlook to sync folders other than Inbox?
Any ideas on a fix?
Could this be related to my Dutty v3.9XT Turbo ROM?
Or... is this a known issue whereby I could argue with my network operator and maybe claim some of the excessive data charges back?
(ps. I have tried searching, LOTS... but have had no luck whatsoever)
Has no-one else really experienced this problem?
If a Mod reads this, could you possibly "move" this thread to:-
xda-developers > Windows Mobile Development and Hacking > Windows Mobile Software Development
... or wherever you feel more appropriate (and may get more exposure).
Thanks.

First off, I wanted to say Thank You to everyone who contributes and shares their expertise on this site. I've been using my BA since it first came out, and have followed the upgrade path through WM5 and now WM6.
Here is my question though....
Because my BA is getting up there in years, it appears the internal backup battery has died - it shows 100% charged, but if I ever let the main battery die, there is no reserve to carry me through until I can recharge. When this happens, of course I don't really loose anything critical (apps or outlook data) BUT I do have to rebuild all my POP messaging accounts (they dissapear). Not such a big deal, more of an annoyance than anything, except that WM won't let me use the same names as I had for the original accounts. For example - If a have a "Yahoo" account, and then the battery dies, the "Yahoo' account dissapears from the messaging client, and when I go recreate it I'm told that "Yahoo" already exists and I have to rename it to something else....
Interestingly enough, the today plug in still shows the original email account (and the number of unopen messages at the time it was "lost").
What's bothering me isn't the recreation of the accounts - it's that I CAN'T find where these accounts are kept, so I can delete either the file or the registry settings.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks again to everyone involved in this site,
-Ant
Your answer is here (more like workaround than a solution but it works 100%)
http://nicolasmauri.blogspot.com/2007/01/wm5-utility-recover-your-lost-mail.html
Thank You
Thank You very much - the blog this utility was attached to didn't get into too much detail about the "how" these accounts are stored - I'd be interested in learning about that aspect of things, but regardless - the utility finds the "missing" accounts just fine.
Thanks for the help,

I've been trying for months to reliably sync my Wizard to Google's Calendar, and I must have tried every app out there for the purpose. Today I stumbled on SyncMyCal, and I think I've found a winner.
I did have trouble with an annually recurring event, but this seems to be an issue with how Outlook formats things. At least SyncMyCal gave a useful error message, and I was able to also resolve the problem. This issue may have also been the cause of some problems I had with other applications, but none of them gave enough info to find the root cause.
The free version is limited to only three days forward and back, and doesn't autosync, but that's fair. If you want more, there is a paid version.
I don't have any connection with these guys, I just posted this to save others some of the wasted time I invested looking for a solution.
***** UPDATE: Having used this program for six weeks, I'm withdrawing my endorsement, and have deleted it from my Wizard. Although it is somewhat better than others, it is still to flaky to be reliable, deleting some events, duplicating others, and changing the times on still others.
Back to searching
I've been using GooSync for a couple of months. I don't update my events on Google--just on the PPC then sync. It was spotty with recurring events, but has gotten better lately. I also use the contacts sync one way as well. Either I or Goosync has duplicated all the entries once. There was also one time where ALL the contacts and calendar entries were wiped out! I never figured out who was at fault then. I've been using various sync software for a decade and there never seems to be a solution that works right and then keeps on working right.
I think I paid around 20 bucks for a years service. I have to say, they are getting better rapidly. I would try SyncMyCal, but the contacts sync is REALLY what I want....
What is killing my Wing is the size of the pim.vol file, 4.72 mb's and growing. I have deleted all the voice tags and only have ~10 contact photos (resized for the web with CS3, ~7-11kb each.) I pisses me off that I can't move that file to a storage card. What the hell is the use a PPC that limits how many peeps you know or do business with. That makes voice commands and photo contacts useless! I know, I know-- I should get a Tilt-- but that's just a temporary solution. Anyone know of a contacts program that stores it's data on a card?
Google Calendar Sync
5 March 2008 Google Calendar Sync allows you to sync events between Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar.
http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=89955&
You can now access your Google Calendar account from your mobile phone! Just visit mobile.google.com/calendar/ with your phone's web browser and once you're logged in, you'll see your list of upcoming events with date and time information in an easy-to-browse format.
Cheers

Several major problems with the last post. First, the URL listed for sync info is garbled.
Second, it only works if you have a Widoze desktop. I'm running Linux.
Finally, using the mobile web interface doesn't allow you to edit or delete events, so it's of very limited use.

URL link fixed - thanks for pointing this out. Note the Bboard truncates the display but now the link works. If not, try a search:

Agree but none of the posts mention Linux. In fact the first post mentions "issue with how Outlook formats things"

The mobile web interface does allow you to ADD events and has a bandwith friendly view of the next few appointments. Nobody in xda-developers forum had mentioned either mobile.google.com/calendar or indeed the new Google Calendar Sync before me.

I don't think these are "major" problems or warrant a rating of "Not Helpful". I shared the pain of the first two posters who "must have tried every app out there" that "duplicated" or "wiped out!" all the entries . Like them, I "just posted this to save others some of the wasted time I invested looking for a solution."

Hello,
I was unsure of which thread category to post this, so I did a couple.
Have a AT&T Fuze with the NRG v2.0 41609 ROM. Running MSO2007, specifically Outlook 2007 through Exchange on my company's network. I do not know what Exchange server version we are running.
Here is the issue...
On occasion, perhaps 1-2 times per day I must completely resync my Fuze contacts, calendar, etc, etc with Outlook 2007. Why? The "server" changed. Sorry, the error message I recently got and have gotten in the past essentially says the data on the server has changed and I must resync all of the data the Fuze. I do not recall the EXACT message. Bottom line though is nothing "changed" at least by me.
Also, under the Settings > Connections there is a "Edit my Proxy setting choice and it auto checks and completes an entry xxxxxxx.com for the server address. I have unchecked, rechecked, etc hoping this helps aovid this regular resync.
Lastly, the resync takes about 90 minutes given all of the contacts, calendar, email and if it did not take so long I would not fret about it.
So why and why might I change to avoid this.
Thanks in advance,
m0

I've had several problems with my new HD2.
The most recent and most worrying was it not coming out of sleep, pressing or holding the power button did not wake the device, nor did any other button or screen presses for that matter. I had to remove the battery in the end. It had happened overnight when I woke up this morning it wasn't working and then 20 minutes later when I got to work the same problem, charge is at about 71%
I read on another forum that there was a firmware fix for this on these forums but couldn't find anything...
The others are configuration problems im sure, I'm with T-Mobile (UK) and just selected TMobile during the setup wizard, all the basic stuff works like phone/sms/email (google and exchange) and browsing, but I've noticed twitter won't log in with any account...nor does MSN messenger, I've read somewhere that it's because some services expect the connection called "Internet" but with T-Mobile settings it gets renamed to "The Internet"...Still I changed the name of the service and it caused more problems than it fixed...is there a way to change what network that messenger and twitter use?
Other than these problems it's a really nice device, very pleased with it! Oh and great forums by the way, very helpful, the tips thread is fantastic.
*edit*
I should also add that I noticed sub folders in outlook don't sync, for example the inbox syncs fine with exchange 2003 but all my subfolders inside the inbox are all empty.
For the power problem see This thread . The problem may well be with the 'notification queue' and installing some software to manage this has helped a lot of people with the same problem
Your connection problems may be related to T-Mobile's connection settings, though I'm not certain as I don't use T-Mobile. It used to be that by default, T-Mobile add a Proxy Server entry in their connection settings. This is OK for standard email and surfing, but may not allow access to other services. The old trick was to simply remove the tick from the 'Proxy Server' tab in Settings/Connections/Connections (accessed from the Sense Settings tab, then Menu/Show all Settings.
For the Outlook sub folders, you need to go into your Messaging program, then hit 'Menu' then scroll the window up to see a 'Tools' submenu. From here you can access the 'Manage Folders' list where Inbox should have a '+' to allow it to expand.

I used to have the exact same problem with "waking up" the device, until I removed some program links from the StartUp folder.
It seems to me that for some weird reason that folder is processed each time the device comes back from suspend mode and some of the apps in there just didn't play right with my HD2.
Or maybe the apps started in there just don't like the suspend mode in general.
So after I had reduced the number of apps started upon boot-up to an absolute minimum, I no longer have any issues with waking my HD2 up.
Also, you should implement the GPRS reg hack to reduce battery consumption.
I found that auto-disabling the GPRS data connection after 5 minutes inactivity made all the difference on my HD2 for preserving battery power.
Finally, disable that brain damaged "two step" unlock procedure of the HTC stock ROM either via a Registry Hack or by flashing Tom's or Leo's ROM from XDA (requires SPBL to be installed first).
For most of these tweaks you can also try the "BsB Tweaks" program (also to be found on XDA), w/o the need to flash or hack anything.
Sorry, but I don't use T-Mobile, so I can't help you there.
Thank you both, I've fixed my outlook now and looking through the other fixes. Much appreciated!

WM is still troubled with the notification queue problem? I used to have problems with that on my first WM phone, when my alarms wouldn't go off in the morning. I gave up in the end, and so never used my device as an alarm clock. And having come from Psions that had (and still do) the best alarm clock and calendar feature, I found it really disappointing.
I'll have to have a look at that thread. Thanks.

Agreed- it is a lot better than it used to be (till now!) but I resolutely refuse to use the built in Alarms due to their unreliability, and have been using Chronos for the last 2 years (much better than Spb Time, if less graphically pleasing!)
I dont have alarms set only for ones generated at work through calendar items, so I disabled calendar item sync
Yup...unticking proxy server lets MSN connect, again big thanks for this!
Anyone know the implications of this, will it stop other services from working or end up charging me more or something (on an unlimited data tarrif from tmob)

It shouldn't make any difference- T-Mobile just use it to limit the connectivity to their own servers, but there's no penalty for not using the 'feature'.

Yes it is a bit flaky around here! That is why I now have a Vodafone Access Gateway femtocell at home, so I now have 5 bars of 3G signal!
i own the hd2 t-mobile usa version
so like all of you, i was frustrated that deleting a gmail off of the hd2 (when set up via imap which is automatic from the normal gui setup) didn't work.
in searching these forms i saw that many of you have set it up via activesync. this is my first smartphone and due to my ignoance, i couldn't figure that out. i have outlook via activesync which works great, but can't figure out how to setup another e-mail address via activesync. i saw this page google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299via another thread here, but when i go to active sync on the hd2, all the setup options are greyed out. (if anyone could help me here, I would appreciate it)
anyway... so i decided to press on and found this. when you have the gmail inbox open and you go to menu - tools - options - gmail - edit account setup - 6 screens over - advanced settings (really!?!? i mean really!?!?) there's a drop down that has two options:
1. move them to server trash
2. delete them off server
the default was set to "move them to server trash." i changed it to "delete them off server." i then sent myself an email, deleted it on the hd2, and unfortunately it came back when i hit send/retreive.
knowing that didn't work, i went back to the above setting and put it back to the default "move them to server trash." when i tried it again, it worked. i've done three test e-mails to verify and it works fine -- every time i delete off of hd2, they don't come back (and they are in the trash folder on gamil server).
oh the whoes of smartphones... hope this works for you. (here's 3 hours of my time i'll never get back) good luck everyone and let me know.
Awesome dude! Many thanks for this, It was always a pain to receive emails at work, delete them, to onyl get home and have them come back down in Outlook!
ok well here's an update. it apprears there's a bug in the sence gui. if you delete the email from the sence gui (menu - delete message), the email comes back.
however, if you delete from the gmail inbox (select inbox on gui -- lower left, select the email you want to delete, press delete and you get a confirmation window), it will also delete from the gmail server (move to trash folder).
can someone else verify this?
Yea, same issue here. If I delete from Sense UI, it comes back when I press send/receive. Deleting from the inbox is the only way i can get things to delete properly.
Strange thing you're talking about, until now I never encountered this issue, mails never come back after I deleted them from My HD2.
I upgrade the ROM very often and never had this issue (stock roms, Dutty's ones and now Topix ones)...
