OTA Update - G1 General

hi im new to the site and joined due to not knowing what i am doin when it comes to modding/jailbreak etc i did have the latest update of the uk version and started downgrading for modding/jailbreak, having no luck at all with this i was wondering iff
A: someone could help me jailbreak my phone
B:if i do not jailbreak will i get OTA updates now im back on stock rc7
thanks in advance for the help

No, we can't help you jailbreak your iPhone. We only help root Android devices

yeah the option to update will eventually come, I'm not going to tell you how to root your phone since there are about 100 posts that show you how to do so just search for "how to root g1" and read one of the many simple easy to read guides

^ Look!
A senior member of this site is an unhelpful, sarcastic, pedantic prick, and a junior member is nice enough to help out.
Well done, community... well done.

try theunlockr.com, he has videos along with written tutorials side by side. I really liked his tutorial, I was at the same point as you when I was rooting, I almost just waited for the ota, but I went ahead and rooted. If you have anymore questions pm me, I'll be flame free!

If you could spare a little time this morning I would appreciate it a bunch!

Hello everyone, my name is Cody and I just joined this forum today. I dumped my iPhone 3Gs and got me the ATT band Nexus One. I love it and I have done a lot of research regarding rooting this phone. I have never rooted a phone before and this is my first android device! I made up my mind (after spending hours and hours researching) to root my N1. The advantages are great and after using my N1 for a week and really getting to know my phone I want to get into flashing ROMS etc.
This leads me to my request. I am sorry if I am in the wrong place, but I was wondering if someone that has experience in rooting (preferably with the ATT Nexus One, if that even matters) the N1 would take a bit and maybe shadow me in the process. I know that is a lot to ask and again I am sorry. I just want to make sure I do this right and that I am doing everything that I need to do. I have read that it can take a few hours so I have all the time in the world this morning. I don't know what would be easier but I have a blackberry lying around that I could call someone or if that would be weird I am open to suggestions. I don't need someone to hold my hand through the process just be there if I have any questions. I am open to all kinds of help (email, PM, chat, etc)
I have a Macbook (early 2008 edition, if that even matters) My nexus one is is Firmware version: 2.1 -update1 (you probably knew that), Baseband version: 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2, Build Number: EPE54B, Kernal Version 2.6.29-01117-g4bc62c2 android-build apa26 #1.
I dont know if you need this info but I have read that you need to flash the radio to the right version so I was writing this to see if I have the right one. I would like to do this without messing with the radio (I dont really feel like bricking this gorgeous piece of machine) I do know that I should never remove the battery. If I am missing anything please let me know I am very patient and want to do this right. I havent downloaded the things that I need just yet but I can do that. If someone would maybe let me know the latest Cyan Mod. (Oh I should of mentioned for now I would just like to root and flash the newest stable Cyan)
I know this is a lot to ask and again I am really sorry (especially if this is in the wrong area to post this) Even if you don't have the time to shadow (I dont blame ya) I would appreciate any info that you have the time to spare. Thanks again guys and I look forward to meeting you all!
Cody
I'd wait until you have a reason for doing so...
At least you have the latest Radio and won't have to mess with that... just read up the posts with directions to unlock the bootloader and go from there.
I have done some research and would love to unlock the extra RAM as well as run custom ROMS (I would like to try out the Desire ROM for sense)
You pretty much seem to be capable of rooting. Do you have the guides for rooting. They work on att nexus so it doesn't make a difference. The latest cyan is 5.0.5.3 I believe, and can be download from his website. However If you go to the developing forums you can click on his rom by Cyanogen, And not any others that say his name. You will then see a download link in the post. But for now just do the whole rooting process. It should take you under 30 minutes. Its very easy. Just go for it. Don't worry about bricks. Hasn't happened yet. But if anything pm me your Gmail if You wished to get more detailed help. Im typing from my phone so can't get into much detail for now. Sorry.
Edit: The roms however such as Cyan already unlock the extra ram.

Great, thanks for the info that is one of the questions I had that was unanswered even though I have done a lot of research. Is there any good beginner (mac) walkthrus on this site? I am searching right now, but just thought I would ask. Thanks again for your help.

google is your friend.... you're going to run into things that everyone else assumes/knows and you'll want to be able to find answers rather than waiting on someone else to answer a blog post.
One quick thing before I get started (again, thanks for all you guys for helping me) I am going to be doing this on my macbook running Snow leopard version 10.6.3 is there going to be any problems I am going to run into? Do I need to download any drivers on top of the three programs I am to download (ie. Amon recovery image, google apps, and of cyanogen). I just want to make sure I am getting all this correct before I start
i got the over under at 3 days on this guy posting something along the lines of "You bastards bricked my phone, FIX IT!"
angermeans - you will find that users of this forum are not very tolerant of requests such as yours when the information you seek is easily available on this forum.
Really - don't be afraid, read up, follow the tutorials exactly, and you will have yourself a nicely customized phone in no time.
Or a very expensive paperweight. Kidding...

Dude, you can do it yourself. It isn't all that difficult. Moreover, there are so many guides available in this forum. Just search it and you'd be good to root your device yourself....
Ok so I got the phone rooted and unlocked and I have downloaded the latest Cyanogen ROM. I am using a Mac and from what I can see I have to put the downloaded (Latest Cyan mod and google features) on the root. I do that and when I hit flash zip from sdcard I get the error E:No zip files found.
Could this be because my mac is auto unzipping the .zip?

No need to unzip, after you download the .zip files just open finder, find them and then drag them over to your SD card.

I just want to say that I owe you guys a big thank you for all your help today. I went in a newbie and came out five hours later still a newbie but with a rooted nexus one with the latest cyanogen mod build. I am really sorry that I posted this in the wrong place and I am so glad that there are good people that tolerated my "newbiness" I learned a lot today and I am very happy with my decision. This was the first time that I have ever rooted a phone and I can say that I know quite a bit more than I did before. I look forward to spending a lot more time on this forum so one day I may help others out the way you guys have helped me.
Signed a very happy Nexus One owner.

2.1 Leak to 2.1 Root

Hi. I am a dev who is fairly new to the Android platform. I recently acquired a droid eris running 2.1 leak v3. I am interested in upgrading to root. I was wondering if anyone had achieved root in any of the leaks? If not, is anyone working on it? If so I may be able to help.
Thanks in advance and I apologize if any of these questions had already been answered. I have searched all over this forum and other forums and could not find a recent answer to these questions.
Also, I hear the OTA is right around the corner and might be the exact same as the third leak. Should I just wait until that comes out to attempt to achieve root? I do not want to spend hours of my time working on this only to have the OTA come out the next day and have done this for nothing.

There are versions of 2.1 rooted, but there is no current way to go from the leaks TO root. There are rooted roms based on 2.1 though.

Rooting updated EVO

okay guys, I tried to figure this out without bothering yall, but my newb knowledge is limited and I'm confused as hell. I was planning on rooting my phone today after reading about all the information I've been collecting from you guys, but now that I have updated my phone, will Toast's method using those files still allow me to root? Or do I need new files in order to root my phone? I see some files on developer page on new root but I'm confused if those are for phones already rooted or not...ahhhh
so I guess I'm asking is..if you have stock phone with new update applied, how do I go about rooting my evo?
We don't know yet. You should not have updated.
Quick and straight to the point, thanks for your reply. I guess I'm a motherfreakin idiot with the worst timing in the world for things like this. FML

quick question; if i root with Toast's method, then install the rooted updated rom that's in the dev section (by Calkulin), that should be fine, right?

So in order to fully root and nand unlock stock evo with new update, all I have to do is follow Toast's step 1&2 then apply the new rooted update on developer site? just wanna get things crystal clear so I don't risk bricking my evo..
I don't know or think it has been confirmed to work with the new update yet.
Toast step 1 will root the phone
Toast step 2 will unlock nand
Installing the new rooted update will flash the stock sprint rom without breaking your root.

There is some info going around in dev forum saying Toast's method will not work if you have the new OTA update applied on stock EVO saying you will get error messages and stuff although it will not brick your phone which is adding to more confusion..
has anyone successfully rooted their stock evo with new OTA update applied? or do I need to wait until devs come up with new files needed to root the evo?

You and me both my friend, you and me both. Sat there as the update came up and thought, I bet this is going to prevent me from rooting today ...
Yeah, ALL root is broken if you install the OTA.
Okay so I've been digging around and asking questions in dev forum, seems like there is no way for Stock EVO with OTA update to root their EVO yet. What bothers me is that I haven't seen a single post from a dev announcing that they are working on new root methods for Stock EVO with new OTA update.. they seem to be more concerned about fixing the issue around previously rooted EVOs, and I'm afraid we are getting left out... I hope this isn't the case, and hopefully one of our brilliant devs will give the new stock evo with OTA update owners some attention to this matter.

They're busy working on the kernel. Everybody was warned not to accept the OTA and those of us that chose to do it have to lie in our beds until the developers get around to it.

Seems like that is the case, someone from dev forum suggested that downgrading the OTA to previous one then rooting might wield some fruit, If I can figure out how to do that I'll be more than happy to be a guinea pig for you guys.

They busted their asses to get root the first time, and, as of right now, every EVO that you buy is capable of being rooted. Only people who update without heeding the warnings are affected, so it is kind of hard to convince a dev to throw down all of their current work to go back and try to solve this AGAIN. It should be a general rule of thumb that you NEVER install manufacturer's updates on any piece of electronics that you are interested in hacking/modifying/changing in any way. 99% of the time they provide some kind of security fixes that are not announced.

I have no doubt in my mind the devs are doing everything they can to provide us with their brilliant work, I have no one but myself to blame for updating the OTA without heeding their warnings. I'm sure once the devs iron out all the issues with previously rooted system, they will get around to us as they always have. I just wish there was any way I can contribute to putting some light onto this matter for those who made the mistake of updating their OTA..
Yeah, was kicking myself as I knew it was a mistake.
Am willing to try out some ish too, that is if an extra Guinea is needed.

4.1.52 to more current version

I am trying to get my phone to update with no luck. I spent about an hour on the phone with Motorola trying to see if they could just push updates to my phone and apparently this is not an option. They say it shows my phone is up to date.
I currently am on 2.2.1 system version 4.1.52 which is not supported on their website to do any kind of updates. I am using a Mac and Motorola has mac compatible stuff on their website. Can anyone please direct me to something as simple as what is on Motorolas website? I would like to get 2.3.
when I go into my phone and check for updates, it says I am already up to date. Has anyone else had this issue? I have searched on here and 2-3 other forums and cannot find a solution to my problem. Motorola said I could send them my phone and they could update it, but I am trying to avoid having to do that.
PS: I am not familiar with this stuff so if you could dumb down your responses I would greatly appreciate it
thats because 4.1.52 isnt an OFFICIAL ota man..
you have to downgrade your device to 1.26 ota to > 1.57 ota to > 1.83 ota to> 4.5.91 Gingerbread.
well that makes sense. It would have been nice if Motorola could have told me that.
Is there an easy way to get 1.26 on my phone with a macbook?
Not that I know of. I could be wrong. But using RSD on a windows PC is super easy to downgrade your device.
I dug around for you, and may be able to help...The previous poster is right, you can't be on 4.1.52 in order to receive updates. You need to flash an official OTA first. On mac, use this guide...I don't have a mac, never used this guide, can't guarantee it...but just read the thread a little bit to know all you need to know
You can go here to select the SBF of your choosing I suppose... or, in the Development Section, maybe read about the Pudding thread, and see if you want to unlock your bootloader or not.
Lemme know if you have any more specific questions...Like I said, I haven't been in your situation and don't know every detail, but I could help you get in the right direction.

[Q] Noob needs help installing Kitkat. Help!

Ok. Im pretty new to the smartphone scene and I have very limited knowledge when it comes to this stuff.
I bought my Razr M in October of 2012. I love this phone has been an amazing piece of equipment for the last two years. Shortly after purchasing it, my friend talked me into rooting it and deleting a bunch of the factory firmeware/bloatware that i dont use (kinda wishing I didnt listen to him).
Ok, as everyone is well aware, the kitkat update became available this past may and , unfortunately, when my phone downloaded and tried to install it, it failed at 25%. Now everyday and every 12 hours since then, i get the update notice and everytime, it fails.
Just so anyone willing to help knows, my phone is rooted with a locked bootloader. The only thing I did was delete some bloatware.
PLEASE....Can someone please give me a step by step guide on what I need to do to install kitkat on my phone?
Use RSD_Lite to flash the current firmware.
Thank you very much for the response. I downloaded the most current version of RDS lite and also the current firmware. I've never used anything like RDL and I have to admit, I'm kinda nervous and I really dont want to fudge anything up when I do this. I was wondering if you could kinda give me a step by step guide to follow?
Again... I thank you for the help and I sincerly apologies for my ignorance.
