Disregard this. I am an idiot.

2G is Edge!

Sweet mercy... I've made myself look like a fool.

Is t-mobile 2g faster than at&t's?

So I ordered my N1 yesterday, and currently have at&t. wasn't too worried about the whole 3g thing, because I figured one of the smart guys here at xda would figure out a way to make it work. After looking in to it further, I realize the hardware just won't allow that. I would just switch to T-mobile, but they have no 3g coverage anywhere near me yet. this brings me to my question. is it worth switching to tmobiles coverage for faster 2g possibly, or in the hopes that they'll soon expand their network. I don't mind getting out of my contract with at&t, tmobiles rates seem to be a lot better. I'm just wondering if anybody has heard anything on T-mobiles future plans.
I think most anecdotal evidence by most users is that EDGE on TMO is much faster than ATT. Why? Even though the "transport" 2G technology is the same, ATT still suffers from not enough bandwidth at its towers for all the heavy 3G areas due to heavy usage. -- In other words, backhaul contention.
Also, the fact that in places where there is no TMO 3G... EDGE works quite well for the very same reason... Even with towers that only have several T1/DS1's in place instead of T3/DS3's or fiber
Cheers,
Kermee
In NYC, where I have 3G coverage as well, EDGE tops out at 10-15KB/s

I personally have ran on EDGE for awhile on tmobile and have never had a problem with wifi while I am at home/school... however the 3g is nice, though my house seems to have 3g signals
its simple business really, though 1 man cannot make a difference... as the company grows, the service grows... verizon has the best service because it has the most customers... i think the reason tmobile has struggled in the US (as opposed to being the number 1 world wide carrier) is because of the lack of appeal from phones... with more phones rolling out and tmobile always having its doors open to unlocked phones i see the company gaining some momentum and it starts with these new android phones making it big as well as now having the fastest network in the nation...
ive had bad experiences with both verizon (contract issues) and att (terrible customer service), tmobile has yet to steer me wrong (other than not giving me an upgrade for the N1 haha)
with that said, try em out, idk if companies still let you trial their service for a week or so but you could ask?
i honestly cant tel a diff between edge and 3 g lol they both are friggin fast as hell

are you crazy? 3G is AT LEAST 10+ times as fast as EDGE.
I know on my touch pro using att 3g over edge. they have 3g where I work, but not at my house. so I always just use wifi at my house, but don't bother at work because the 3g is fast enough. I can definetly tell the difference. granted there is wifi almost everywhere these days, but with my touch pro I have to turn it off and on when I'm using it so my battery half makes through a day. It will be nice if the N1's is more of a automatic thing, if that makes sense. I guess if I knew that t Mobile would actually be implementing 3g in my area at all soon, it would be an easier decision, but I haven't found anything to make me think they'll be adding towers in York, PA any time soon.
Im in Dallas TX and just activated my phone. I was worried because people in some forums where saying phone kept switching to 2g. I just activated my phone and its been on 3 out of 4 bars on 3g last 30-40 minutes...I know this is kind of off topic, but thought it was important do to the nature of all the talk about speed on tmobile.
Ok im scared now, i just looked at the USA map on tmobile https://my.t-mobile.com/Plan/CoverageMap.aspx and looks to hardly be any 3g coverage! What! Tell me it aint so!
that's what I'm saying, I want 3g on this phone, but it's just not in my area on tmobile. we've established it's pretty much going to be impossible to get att's to work on this phone. It doesn't look like tmobile has 3g anywhere, atleast not hardly. what to do, what to do.

OMG i live in york to lol. ive asked tmobile many times if we'll ever have 3g and they told me december 09 but that never happened. who knows if we'll ever get it. but edge for me on tmobile works good unless u use media functions like youtube and streaming video but its good for web browsing and email
Make sure T-Mobile has EDGE all around your area because I've found that there are many places that don't even have EDGE on T-Mobile and are GRPS only. That being said, I do find that usually T-Mobile EDGE is faster.... The difference is so small that I wouldn't change networks over it though..
I get around 25KB/s or so, which works fine for streaming music and such. This is quite a bit faster than the AT&T users seem to get here.
Yeah you should be happy with what you've got. EDGE isn't amazing but at least with the 900mhz range you've got coverage. I'm not sure about T-mobile US thought but it has to be better than UK. I live in the UK just outside of town with 3 basestations surrounding my house just out of range with 2100 3g and 1800 2g. I can get signal occasionally with my Iphone 3gs, until I touch it...
The coverage is okish but I get Black-spots everywhere; literally, I can walk round the corner away from a basestation and lose signal. I can only use my phone if I'm underneath a basestation and even then the crappy 4.2Mbit/s (It may even be less than that) limited basestations are overloaded. Each user is then further capped at roughly 1.8Mbit/s
That's 3G and above, which I rarely get as I mentioned. When you get 2G you get EDGE. When I get 2G I don't get EDGE, I don't even get 2.5G, I get slower-than-dial-up GPRS which is unusable. None of T-mo UK's basestations are EDGE enabled; with common black-spots and poor 3G reception, this makes for an appalling network. I can't wait to switch to Three UK. Blanket UK 3g coverage with amazing deals: £15/mo rolling contract with 300 mins, unlimited texts, Unlimited (7.2Mbit/s) data. The only problem is they have shockingly bad phones (no problem for me, or so I thought...)

That pretty well sums up the problem with TMUS users.
They have no f***ing clue.

For G2 users, would you rather have a 4G icon instead of the H icon?

Just wanted to throw something out there to both users and developers. I always wondered if it was possible to change the "H" icon to a "4G" icon on a custom rom. Lets leave out the arguement of "Well HSPA+ isnt true 4G" and all of that. I just want to put that question out to developers and ask the G2 users if that is something that interests you. Just for my own curiousity. I personally wouldnt mind seeing it. Im a rooted user using Virtuous.
By the way just want to add that i read more than i post here and i wanna thank everyone who has posted helpful info on here. I love this G2. Glad i switched from Blackberry to Android.

It's just a small graphic element - there's no reason it *couldn't* be done, honestly.
You probably won't see it in Virtuous - the developers have stated that it is to be a pure port with few tweaks than a custom-built ROM (hence they don't support toggles in the notification area, etc).
It could easily be done as a stand-alone mod for any ROM, though.
There is no 4G and therefore a 4G icon should not be made. End of the ****ing story. Dont let the devs start supporting the bull**** marketing.
Its HSPA+. Label it as so.
If ANYTHING is to be changed, I would like to see E for edge, 3G for when I'm in 3G, H for HSPDA/HSPUA, and H+ or some derivative for HSPA+. That would make the most sense. There is no 4G, I do not ever want to see a 4G icon until 4G specs are met.
Its like putting a V6 sticker on a Honda Civic. It just isn't right.
Both CyanogenMod and Virtuous ROMS display 3G when your on 3G. Hope that helps.

I knew this, but thank you for clarifying that for anyone else
E, 3G and 4G icons are on sparksmod. 2G, 3G and H are on enomther. G, E and H are on stock. Non of this matters but a preference. What really matters is holding that data for long periods of time.
p.s. And to reference to 4G? This country doesn't have true 4G on any carrier. This has been discussed on another thread.

You do know that the ITU officially stated that LTE, WiMAX, and HSPA+ are now classified as 4G, right?
It would be well within reason to make a 4G icon when on 4G due to this fact.
I actually kind of think it would be better for devs. For example, CM is on several phones across several providers. Verizon with LTE, Sprint with WiMAX, and T-Mobile with HSPA+. Right now CM uses an H icon which is not what providers, other than T-Mobile, use. By using a 4G icon, it would make the new speed protocol icon generic across all platforms, regardless of network.
Just my thought.
Sidenote, a lot of Honda's are V6, even some have V8's, just depends on what one you are referring to. Need to be more specific XD

yes who the heck knows what h means anyways!
frankly this question is rather useless.....especially when I spend 25 days each month being horribly throttled.

Honestly
In my opinion i would say it would be nice if per-say thats hspa+ says 4g seeing as hspa is still closer to that of the 3g speed ranges. Just my two cents.
If there were only triggers to check speeds we could have a FUNCTIONAL system....
Say, We have the regular G, E
1 - 7.2MBPS = 3G
7.3+ MBPS = 4G (since ITU officially sees this as 4G)
I think we should go by this system..... keeps things nice and easy.
on a side note I do not understand why they let Sprint's WiMAX become 4G since it maxes out at... I donno 6ish MBPS....... sigh

[Q] Stay on edge while using Wifi?

Now, I know that you aren't "technically" using a data network when you're using wifi, but you know how when you're on wifi, but you see the bars go from like 4 to 1, knowing that it picked up a 3g or H signal and switched to that?
That pisses me off.
"Hey, I know it makes no positive difference for you, but I just lowered your calling/text messaging signal!" (That was the phone talking, btdubz) It's ok, Mytouch 4g. I already love you. you can stop trying so hard.
Anyways. I want my phone to stay on edge when I'm using wifi because edge is EVERYWHERE, literally I can't even see through all of this edge blockin' up my vision

During calls, I'm assuming you drop down to 4G/HSPA or 3G? That is normal. LTE goes away because voice calls don't run over VoLTE (Voice over LTE) yet. I don't think you noticed it with your Galaxy S3, but it probably dropped LTE as well. Don't worry about it though; I was worried about it at first too. That isn't a problem with your device.

You are correct in a way. The LTE is your data (for now) you will notice a drop in data speed when your on a call and surfing the web at the same time but yes it is normal chances are you won't be doing both at the same time a lot so you won't have anything to worry about.

[Q] How should the S4 handle busy LTE towers?

I go to theme parks frequently, like Disneyland. I know they're a haven for busy cell towers, but it seems the 4G LTE on Sprint is just plain DEAD there, which seems counter intuitive.
They haven't officially launched, but my phone connects to 4G quite often now there.
In other areas, the 4G is fine and fast. But around busy places like that, it's 100% dead. Not even slow. No ping. No DNS. No nothing. I switch to 3G and it's a little slow, but steady and reliable.
Is it because Anaheim hasn't launched 4G officially yet and they're just trolling people? Is something wrong with my phone in handling busy towers? Or is that how an overloaded 4G LTE tower behaves, in that it just has NO response?
It seems bizarre that 3G is working better since I expect 3G towers to be much more saturated than the VERY new 4G LTE....

I do that, and it works. I'm asking less about how to get a signal and more about why the 4G LTE just completely dies, but stays connected, in busy environments, while the 3G just goes slower.
Sprint is ABSOLUTE CRAP at sporting events and theme parks throughout Southern California. I frequent Dodger Stadium, Angel Stadium, Staples Center, Rose Bowl, Honda Center, Hollywood Bowl, Disneyland, etc. A Sprint customer, including myself, can expect nothing NADA ZILCH from this crap network. I've used Samsung Galaxy S3, Note 2, Galaxy S4, EVO 4G LTE. It doesn't matter which phone I have used; usually the phone CANNOT send texts, receive marginal reception when it can connect to make a call, and good luck loading an app or webpage which requires data. I've contacted Sprint reps numerous times about their poor service at all these locations. The typical response from Sprint is that they say ALL NETWORKS experience poor service at these densely populated areas due to local towers reaching capacity. When I counter that comment (e.g. LIE) by telling them other friends/family who have phones on "other networks" (Verizon, ATT) do not experience these problems. Their phones can send/receive texts, make calls, surf the net with no problems. I do give Sprint credit. Their reps are trained well. They do not acknowledge their FALSE STATEMENT and quickly deflect the issue to the network being upgraded.
One time I spoke with a Sprint retention rep who said a line of service must receive below 92% connectivity success before they consider allowing a customer to be released from their contract (i.e. no ETF). Of course calls that DO NOT CONNECT are not considered unsuccessful since Sprint cannot collect this data. (Or so said the Sprint rep)
Four more months with SLOW CRAWL (i.e. Sprint) Network. Then, I'm free from this contract. What's the benefit of UNLIMITED DATA when the crappy network won't allow a phone to consume data.

You cannot do anything. Believe me. The network is crap, especially at Disneyland.
Actually, there is one thing. I have a friend who works in Anaheim and his job requires him to be at Disneyland Park. He actually went back to his Samsung Galaxy S2 (Epic 4G Touch) which uses WIMAX. He can actually connect on WIMAX in the area most times. He's sent me speed tests where the phone receives 2mb down, 1mb up. That's much better than NO LTE.
So just as the Sprint Network has regressed in providing cell service to its customers, he regressed to an older phone using Sprint's antiquated network and it actually works.
In summary, regression is progress (to Sprint and its customers).
Angry much?
I should say, yes, my previous device was an HTC Evo 3D, which was on WiMax, and 4G Wimax data worked, even in a crowded area. So this is definitely limited to 4G LTE.
Previously, at the corner of Santa Monica Blvd and Bundy Dr, there was a dead 4G LTE tower, too. I reported it and it is working now.
I'm not too upset knowing it's the network and not my device. It's much easier knowing the towers will improve, and I don't need to replace the device. (My first Evo 3D didn't connect to 4G at all. Had to replace it)
