I'm not sure if it's just my phone or not.
But if I select WIPE from Amonra recovery it still leaves programs and apps I downloaded to my previous build?
I.E I have just wiped to install a new Modaco 1.4 Rom and I've got a background from Panda Home on......
Very confused as I want my phone to be as it was when I first switched it on!
Have you got apps2sd on?
If so wiping phone wont remove apps if they are installed onto sd card.
If you didn't turn off "backup settings", then even after a wipe the apps/wall everything will be resynced and look the same.

No I don't have apps to SD on.
I'll try again and switch off backup settings..

If you've already backed up your settings with google, it will restore no mater what your settings are. To get around this DO NOT enter your google username and password after a wipe, just skip it. Then when your phone is booted go into settings and accounts and add it there. That will stop it from restoring. It is what I have to do.
Also, most of the ROMs have a backup script that backs up apps and whatnot then restores during the flashing process

May seem silly but I figured I'd ask.
If I use nandroid to WIPE the phone completely does this wipe it to a blank state including the recovery partition on the phone that I flashed when I rooted the phone?
If it doesn't, is it safe to say that I can then just load Fresh or whatever rom I want and click the UPDATE and load the new rom.
I am also running the Gumbo kernel, would this also need to be redone as well?
Apps that were PAID on the market can they be re-downloaded for free or will they have to be purchased again?
IF the above nandroid wipe doesn't work what is best to wipe the phone and start from scratch? I dont' mind if I have to re-root my phone etc.. I just want to make sure if I have to do it i am prepared.
Also how does one do a factory wipe if you have the phone rooted and a different rom?
Sorry for all the questions, but something is seriously messed up with my phone cause I can't install any apk's from the SD card and I am getting a parsing error.
-Nigel
Lots of questions in on here. If you use Apps2sd, your apps will remain if you wipe from recovery. Just about everything else is gone, but apps are still there. Your ROM and Kernel are mostly unchanged by the factory wipe. It as far as I know doesn't write anything back to the phone, just deletes a lot of what is on it.
If you want to go back to a completely stock phone use RUU - look at the sticky wiki's at the top.
Apps that are paid are tied to your google account. as long as you don't change that you are fine redownloading and won't have to pay again.
Judging from your errors....use RUU and start over. Something went nutz on you.
A data wipe clears your downloaded apps (except if you used apps2sd), google account, email accounts, homescreen setups, etc. If your apps are gone, you can open the market and click on My Downloads, and your paid apps can be redownloaded for free. Gumbo Kernel and whatever ROM you're using will stay on, as will Amon_RA recovery.

I just did a full Wipe holding down the Home and Back arrow and then hitting power.
Looks like the stock crap is all back onhowever I still see superuser permission program still there..lol
Is the phone currently rooted?
I did see the Recovery image is still on the phone which is good.
Just want to make sure if I need to root the phone again.
Thanks again,

Well, my phone has been freaking out a bit lately (Handcent not showing contact pics, Contacts not syncing with FB, FCes here and there, etc.) so I decided to start from scratch and reload everything. I tried all kind of resets (CLEAR STORAGE in FastBoot, Wipe Data, MSL Reset, etc.) and every time my phone loads up, Fresh 3.1.0.1 is already installed with all the apps I had. I understand Fresh being there, but why are all my apps staying?! Because of this, all the problems I've been facing seem to be staying as well.
This is really getting annoying. Anyone recommend a more aggressive alternative to clearing out as much as possible?! I have TB prepared to restore my apps already. The rest can be synced so I don't care.
Thanks in advance...
put the engineering hboot from toast's part 2 on your sdcard and run it, it will wipe everything
Although I don't know why wiping everything from your recovery wont do the job.. I've heard Clockwork doesn't always wipe completely but I've never had an issue with ra's recovery
I have already done that and tried CLEAR STORAGE without any luck. The third-party apps still remain. WTF! Makes no sense...

If so then wipe ext also

Contacts - Should always save them as "Google contact" so they automatically go into your contact list after logging in on your phone.
Messages - Go into market and search "SMS Backup" back it up then once you install your new ROM, download the same app again and restore it.
Apps - Use Titanium Backup to back up the apps. Then install it again after flashing and restore the apps.

Sure is. The simplest way is to make a backup with Clockwork recovery before you install the new rom and do wipe of data/factory reset, and all caches etc...
Once you have flashed the new rom, while still in Clockwork, goto Backup/Restore, choose Advanced, choose the backup you just made, and select only Data from the list. Everything you've asked for should be restored. Some widgets will not work on the first boot, you will have remove them from the home screen and re-add them.
Some apps will behave as if it's the first time you have run them, be aware of this.
This method makes for the simplest method of restoring everything that gets wiped when you install a rom that requires a full wipe of data + factory reset.
cool thanks, I got both methods done. gonna try to flash now. thanks

Does the backed up old data integer with a new rom/kernel though? I've been tempted to do this, but I'm worried that the data will conflict and cause issues.

Indeed, this method saves a lot of time.
I've had no issues using it, aside from widgets not working, until you re-add them to a home screen.

"Integer"? Did you mean integrate? or perhaps interfere?
I haven't had any issues using this method. I'd imagine any conflicts would be overwritten by the nature of restoring /data. If a rom author includes some .apks inside of /data, those will get over written. It's very easy to add them back though, just strip them from the roms zip, and copy over to the phone, then install.
I find this much easier than using Titanium Backup or some other app to restore apps and settings lost due to installing a rom.

While that seems to be perfect as far as restoring (and it does restore everything.) I seem to be having a problem with it once I run my rom, I'm having issues with sms locking up and the phone not coming out of sleep. I'm using Epic Exp 1.2.02 and Phoenix 1.43.
I've reloaded and restored date 3 diff times and still no luck..

Are you using SetCPU, while also having it set to something other Conservative mode? Try keeping it set to conservative. Also, SetCPU doesn't play nice with the Epic if you use a "Screen Off" profile. I don't have a solution other than to not use a Screen Off profile in SetCPU.
Boot recovery. Wipe data cache and dalvik (unless your rom requires somthing different) flash your rom/kernel. Reboot your phone and test. Determine whether the issue is with the rom/kernel or with the data restore. If the issue is the rom, head over to the rom's thread for support. If its not the rom boot into clockwork and try to restore data again. Maybe do an advanced restore?

Thanks dever76 for that tip, I now can switch to nightly builds on my Nexus. I appreciate it!
i started noticing that after i flashed a new rom, alot of my settings are set to the way i had them before. and some apps are already installed that would otherwise need a marketplace install..
keep in mind, i always do a wipe of cache/dalvik/sdcard
i think it started happening after i partitioned the sd card for those old sense roms that needed extra space.. cant remember..
but it seems like theres a portion of rom that isnt being wiped and all my settings are being carried over to the next rom flash..
how can i fully wipe my phone or get it back to normal?
this is weird, and i want it to stop. any ideas?
i just flashed back to amonra

Are you using ROMs that have Google back up enabled?
Also, if the zip isn't set to wipe /data and you're not wiping it then you'll still have all of your data.
That has happened to me too. Are you wiping sdext and android.secure in recovery. I always wipe those and haven't had that happen since I started doing that.
We're comin from a pure power source.
naw i turn off all that google backup stuff.
thats the thing, when i try to wipe sdext it gives me an error (from the last i remember doing it)

You should be wiping data as well when flashing new roms.
I flash vrsuperwipe everytime I flash, but I use Google backup, so when I flash a new sense ROM it saves a lot of my settings, and my SD-ext apps automatically appear. Good feature imo.

still wondering about other options before testing some new roms
same thing happened to me so I tried repairing sdext and then re-partitioned my card and left it ext2 instead of ext3,wipe data/cache/dalvik cache/system flash superwipe, then flashed rom. don't know which one worked but it stopped. Also I noticed it mainly happens when I flash 3.0 roms but it has happened on CM7 to

You did not wipe data. If you do this you will preserve all of you apps (if they were not on card), data and system settings. This may work for you if the new ROM that you are moving to is similar enough. It can cause big problems if the structure of the ROMs is too different. You can end up with a phone that lags and has wakelocks (at best) or is not functional at all due force closes all over the place.
You should really wipe data as well before flashing a ROM and then do a selective restore of data on the new ROM.
I used Titanium Backup to uninstall certain packages (not before backing them up, of course) and it seems that I uninstalled too much... Whenever I start certain applications, the phone immediately blanks - and locks.
I have to press the power button 1-2 times before the screen unlock allows me to seep my finger. And it doesn't always succeed in retaining the screen: too often, it will immediately blank and lock again.
Example of applications that make the phone lock: Titanium Backup.
Example of applications that don't blank the phone: Dialer.
I started restoring some of the packages I uninstalled yesterday with the hope that this will fix the problem. So far I tried restoring:
- hiddenmenus
- sns
- Dialer 2.2.2
-setup wizard
- syncMLsvc
But without much success yet.
Any idea which service or package are responsible for correct behavior of the phone?
UPDATE 2: I gave up and decided to flash the EC07-Nuckin-1 ROM. I repeated the entire procedure detailed here and the phone boots fine, but the problem persists - in addition to the fact that the soft menu buttons now disappeared (replaced by faint color dots - LED-like).
How could this happen? Is it possible that my phone contracted an Android virus? (it appears that the problem started immediately after installing Stay Awake from the Android Market.
OK, this is becoming insane: I did a factory reset, re-installed ec07-clean, and not only the problem persists, the settings, home, back and search buttons no longer work!
Not to mention that my account details (and everything else) are still there, even after the factory reset...
And Market won't even start.
How is this possible?
What do I do to simply start from scratch, wiping out everything and all history (except for the SD card)?

I'm not really interested in 2.1. I just don't understand why a total re-install of ec07clean.zip + ec07.tar + update.zip won't restore everything to "brand new condition". Surely there is a way to tell the phone to "forget all history". But what is it?
In the meanwhile, I managed to make the Settings (leftmost) button work, by manually restoring SDM from Titanium Backup.
Android Market now starts. But the SCREEN OFF problem persists. I am now beginning to believe that Stay Awake actually caused a permanent damage.

I understand that they aren't 100% and I am OK with that. All I want is bring the phone to that pristine state it was right after I upgraded it from DL17 to ec07clean.zip.

I even tried the built in stock recovery 2e to do "factory restore". Didn't help.
Why doesn't it even delete my account information? This is weird.

I tried this at least 4 times. It doesn't get rid of anything. That's really puzzling.
In the meanwhile, I managed to restore my phone to a usable state (i.e. get rid of the original screen-off problem). Here is how I did it:
Settings > Display Settings > Power saving mode: UNCHECK (was checked)
Settings > Display Settings > Screen timeout: 1 minute (non was selected!)
I bet this was some remanent of that Stay Awake app.
Now, I lost quite a few productivity hours due to this. But at least now I know that this phone will always be mine, because in this particular phone, "Factory data reset" simply doesn't work.
Have you thought about using a different version of clockwork for flashing and wiping? That usually helps or perhaps stock recovery even
