im using stock orange ROM, and i listen to net radio a fair bit at work.
the other day, i had a scenario where i'd of liked to stream net radio via wifi on my HD.
problem is, when using my HD, i always hit the power button (so screen goes off/device locked), but this disables the the wifi connection, and would obviously drop the free wifi connection, and swap to the chargable GSM network.
i'd prefer the wifi to only be active with that certain program running, so if i do forget to turn it off when i exit media player, it wont reduce battery life needlessly.
so, how does one keep wifi enabled&connected, with a specific program running (media player), and lock the device from accidental presses while in a pocket?

is it possible to maintain wireless connection when screen turns off. It is so enoying every time screen turns off I must reconnect wifi...and all app. useing it, like opera and msn, cuz they start connecting GPRS if I don't....

I have been searching for this for around 8 months with no luck. I have tried registry editiing, different apps that claim to keep WIFI alive and none of them work for my device. Very sad I have come to the conclusion that it is not possible except for listening to internet radio. For whatever reason, the constant data transmission while listening to internet radio, keeps the connection active. I want to keep the data connection active while listening to my own music collection over my network. Unfortunately, wifi shuts off before first song is done playing, and will not play next song as wifi has been disconnected when phone screen shut off and device went into standby. You can keep this from happening by pluging your device in.

I'm using Resco Radio to stream live radio, and, while it works fine over hsdpa, I find it buffers every few mins over WLAN.
I have the WLAN set to "best performance", and am approx 75cm from the router - signal isn't an issue. I work in an IT call center so I have tested it with routers there and get the same issue - its the phone not the routers.
I notice that the WLAN symbol at the top of the screen seems to go to "connecting" when this happens, its as though it just drops out intermittently?
Has anyone else experienced similar or is my device possibly faulty?

I am using Wifi all day here in the states (as the phone only supports edge here).
I never had that problem. Wifi is super fast for me.
I did notice though that I think that after I installed NET3.5 Wifi became unstable.
So I removed .NET3.5 and it seems to be working fine and very stable now.
My Wifi setting are "balanced" and I have to admit that with this phone the Wifi power consumption is super low, comparing to other devices.
WiFi working fine here.
I'm using WiFi all day through work's WiFi and at home as well - both WLANs are perfectly stable and super fast here.
I have it set to "balance" for the performance. I'm also amazed how quickly it connects to the WiFi access point when its brought out of 'sleep' mode! MUCH quicker than my Touch Pro!!
FWIW, I have .NET 3.7 installed - no problems at all.

However I think I have figured it out, the stupid thing turns wifi off (even though it is in use) when the screen has been off a few seconds, I guess to save power, thereby interrupting my stream!
Now I just need to find a way to force it to stay on, battery be damned!
I like to listen to the radio when I'm going to sleep, so its plugged in to charge overnight anyway, and I turn off wifi when I go out....

I was reading an article about how the iPhone will automatically connect to WiFi instead of using the carrier network, when WiFi is available. As well, it manages the WiFi on the phone in a manner which minimizes battery usage.
Anyone know if any of the Android Phones do this?
Related to that, even if it doesn't automatically do that: If we are in a free WiFi spot that we know about and turn on WiFi, will the Android phone use the WiFi as prioritiy over the carrier network, thereby negating need to turn off access to the carrier network?

If you have 3g open, and you enter a wifi area, there are apps you can download which will immediately connect to that wifi spot without you opening Wifi, but those apps drain the battery and will connect at any wifi that you have previously used, thus becoming annoying. I tried it last year on my Android device.
It is much better to simply activate wifi alone, then it will connect to that free wifi spot alone IF you have previously connected to it.
I'll give two examples: At home when I connect my Android device to my wireless router for the first time, it will ask me for password. Then it saves it, so that if I close wifi, it will open 3g alone, but then if I re-open WIFI on my device, it will connect automatically as it saves the password of all wifi spots you have, and it shows you also the list of all saved spots.
The same thing goes for open free wifi spots, first time you connect to it normally without a password, second time it will re-connect alone as long as you have Wifi opened on your Android Device. I wouldn't have my cell to connect to any wifi alone without me opening wifi as it drains battery a lot.
As soon as you open Wifi, and there's an open wifi place or a private one (provided you have entered the password before), your cell will automatically connect to it and will no longer use carrier network until you shut off WIFI.

YEp, and having the phone on silent does not make things better either...

when you hear 3 tones after call finish - is bluetooth activated in this moment for your x2? For example, do you use BT connection to your X2 in your car (handsfree)? Do you think that there is some special requirements for BT headset using to generate this sound on main unit if call was finished?
when you see bad power consumption results - is wifi activated in communication manager in your X2? I think that if you activate wifi - it can be reason for huge additional current if unit can't find appropriate wifi network for some reason.
For example, I found that if I activate wifi - I always should connect unit to charger every day. Then I found that this is specific issue only for me. The specific way of my wifi using is followed - I use 2 different wifi connections to my X2 (on home - secured network through router and in office - open wifi network). I do have connection issues every morning in office and every evening in home. Even if my X2 reports that it's connected to office network - I can see in status bar in Today screen that it's trying to conect again and again - and also I can't use browser or Goggle maps because no data connection is available through wifi. After I power off/on my unit - it can really connect to office wifi network and I can use browser and receive mails e t.c. When I return to home, I see that unit still be connected to office network - but it's impossile. And again - I can't use browser or receive mails by using my X2. After I power off/on unit - it can connect to home network. I can't fix issues in office and in home just turn off/on wifi in communication manager - issue still be actual after this. So, what I do every day - I turn off/turn on my unit every morning after arrive to office and again power on/ power off unit every evening when arrive home So I should spent 2 minutes every morning and 2 minutes every evening to reboot unit. On other hands I think that this is step to avoid more serious issues after couple of days of Windows using - you know usially you can see performance degradation after 1 week of using of any WinMob device - looks like this is result of lot of memory leaks, memory corruptions inside MSFT SW.
if we are talking about unexpected password issue or issue when you can't unlock unit by LOCK icon sliding left or right after press on power on button - for me it looks like memory is corrupted in MSFT lock app. As result some password is requested even if user never activates this password for lock screen. But it's clear that in reality, unit doesn't story in memory any password to compare with entered one - otherwise after power off/on sequency unit still ask password from you. But as I see in the same situation with my X2 - after I remove/insert battery and power on unit - I never see again this issue just after unit goes to Idle.
I think that memory, which is used by MSFT Lock code, can be corrupted only in scope of the same Windows process (of cause if memory is isolated for all processes in WinMob - I hope it's true) - so only other MSFT code can corrupt this memory. Do you know about any public forum where we can ask help from MSFT to see in this issue? I never see that Aaron wrote anything about any contacts in MSFT - but I think that MSFT should be also responsible for any product if Windows logo is applyed to device with WinMob?
To reduce the probability of this issue I never use AutoLock and always lock unit by click on Lock icon in Today panel or by long press on right HW kwy (with key sign).

Hi! I have a similar issue with the wifi that PanichUS described.
The phone sees the network, tells that it's available, but I am not able to connect to it (so I can not do internet browsing, read the emails, etc.)
This happened to me while switching from one network to another, which were in two different places (and the phone was showing the network still available of the place I have already left). But in my case rebooting the phone did not help.
This is not the only case. The same thing also happens to me after I use bluetooth. The phone is connected to the wifi network (I could do internet browsing, etc.), I use bluetooth, and after that I can no more recover the connection. Again it shows that the network is available, but I can not connect to it.
The only thing which helped by now was restarting my house router.
Is the MR2 the last release of the firmware by date? I have bought my phone recently, and for me it seems that it was updated: I have radio, and the theme with grey background (X2 Titan) was activated in the very beginning.
MR2 is last update for X2. Don't wait another update.
Try turn off Wifi in Communication manager before power off and turn on Wifi back in Communication manager after power on.

I have discovered that in fact I don't have problem to connect when using an open network, while with the protected one is always an issue.
Reboot of the phone doesn't change anything even if before doing it I switch off wifi in the connections manager and delete all the settings. Nothing - only reset of the router what helps.
I also tried to use other software (Wifi Monster) - the same thing.
The phone is really wonderful, it really has it's spirit with all these panels and generally the interface, but the wifi issue is really annoying!
My advice - don't install Resco Photo manager on X2.
Great app but works very bad on X2.
I instaled older version Resco.Photo.Manager 7.03. This work good.

Hello. I'm sure that this must have been discussed but I cannot find the answer using search. As is surely normal, I use WiFi within the home and GPRS when there is no WiFi available. If WiFi is connected and I go out for a short while, then when I get back in a WiFi area, the WiFi is still connected. However, if I go away for a long time, and GPRS is used for perhaps a regular weather update, then the WiFi disconnects and has to be manually reconnected upon return to home. This leads to GPRS being used in a WiFi area unnecessarily if you forget to re-connect WiFi. Is there a WiFi connection timeout value or any other setting that can be changed? My old TyTN II did not have this problem. Thanks.

It disable disconnecting WiFi when phone is in sleep mode and with this phone automaticly connects to WiFi when Leo will be in range.
Thanks Franq_23_pl. I think that the CAB just stops WiFi disconnecting when the device is in sleep mode. That will just drain the battery, surely? My old TyTN used to disable WiFi when in sleep mode, but as soon as you switched it on again, WiFi would be enabled and it would connect if in range. The problem with my HD2/Leo is that if I am away from my WiFi for some considerable time (ie, most of the day), then when I get back home and switch the device on, WiFi is disabled, and I have to manually toggle in on. So my question is..... What are the circumstances that cause WiFi to disable itself, and Is there some way of stopping it happening?
OIC now. I think you having some battery saving app and this app turning off WiFi when iz not used. What apps or registry mods you have installed on Leo?

My Leo don't disable WiFi. When i go outside (for ex to work) and back after few hours my Leo connecting to my home wireless network automaticly.
I remember, that i had the same problem like you and it was caused by app, which had duty to save battery.
