HTC Magic keyboard. - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hello XDA.
I have recently updated my HTC Magic with the new european update, and now I got this Hero Keyboard. I love it, and thinks its better than the regular.
I was how ever wondering if those empty spots on the 2. page with symbols, could be filled with my own custom, like a smiley? I use the QWERTY keyboard.

Just me or is the keyboard too small ?

Hi Guys,
Got myself a magic a few days ago, love it to bits but really struggling with the OSK.. the keys are just too small to type quickly/easily.
Is it just me and my big hands ? lol
Are there any alternatives for OSK out there ? (maybe like the phonepad style that comes in HTC EZInput for WinMo?)
Not sure how the keyboard could be much bigger than it already is. The screen is 3.2 inches across (diagonal) and that's all you have to work with. All that can be done is to make the buttons on the bottom row bigger (wider) by omitting the Shift and the Del button, but that would make the qwerty layout kinda funky.
Turn it on its side (landscape mode) -- the keyboard will be bigger that way than in portrait mode.
You can install the app "big keys" in the market and see how you like that. Or you can install the htc keyboard found in the Dream forums. HTC_Chime.apk is what you are looking for.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll have a play with the HTC keyboard and see what it's like.
Does the Magic have the option of the T9 Dialpad keyboard? Or is it just a plain full QWERTY keyboard that auto-corrects?
I haven't seen a T9 option, but it's easy to turn the auto-correcting off, although it will still offer you suggestions, but won't mess with what you're writing.
...double post...
That reminds me, I must add "org" and "uk" to my dictionary so I don't keep entering my email address as [email protected]e
I do not know what video i was watching, but I saw that there was a dialer keyboard available on the HTC magic. Now, I do not know if it was a rooted phone (which it probably was) or if it was an application that was added to the phone. If I am correct, they were showing haykuro's work and it showed in the text input a dialer keyboard. If this is true, would one have to root their G2 phone for it to work? The thought of possibly bricking the phone, sort of...well...makes me feel uneasy lol.

How to install old keyboard in Hero rom?

Hey all! I have a 32A Roger's Magic with MyHero .1.0 rom on it. This rom doesn't come with the crummy old google keyboard, only the HTC one. When I long tap in an input box and pick 'select input method', my choices are Touch Input, iWnn IME, and Touch input chinese.
The problem is I keep running into apps that won't let you input numbers from the HTC keyboard. The two big ones for me are ConnectBot and A Online Radio.
With connect bot, when you are ssh'ed into a server you Cannot type in any numbers. Hitting the key to switch to numbers does nothing. Long holding the number key inputs a letter and the number.
How can I add in the old keyboard to switch to when using these problematic apps?
Update: I got up on the connectbot site and it looks like everyone with the HTC_IME keyborad experiences this. Just need to get the old kb in there to remedy it.

HTC HD2 Keyboard

A friend and I are looking to buy HD2s when they're released in the CDMA version, but a big concern of ours in the quality of the onscreen keyboard.
I have an HTC Touch Pro 2 at the moment, and he has a Samsung Omnia, and one of his main points-of-jealousy is my hardware keyboard.
I'm hoping the screen size will make an onscreen keyboard more bearable, but...
So, could anyone post comments about the keyboard, and/or post screenshots of the onscreen keyboard in both vertical and horizontal configurations.
I'm really hoping the onscreen keyboard is the same as the HTC HD2s...only larger...
Nothing will replace hard keyboard. TP2 is the best so far. Go youtube to review the HD2 virtual keyboard.
If you are fimiliar with TP2 keyboard, you will highly hate the HD2 keyboard. Even Swype or TouchPal Pro are not that perfect yet...

The keyboard is hit or miss, but if you did a poll on here, you'd get people mostly saying it's a hit!
I personally love it, but it did take me a while to get used to it. Also, going through the screen alignment process helps, as it gets the screen aligned to how you use it (as long as you do it in a natural manner, with your thumbs, and not using your finger as a stylus. Who uses their phone like that?? )
If you read the forums, you'll see there's some people that don't like the keyboard, but there's also a lot that originally didn't but have got over it. It needs a little practice, but I can type very fast on it now that I'm used to it.
Anyway, here's a couple of screenshots. Hope this has helped
I Didint wanna start a new topic, so i will borrow this one
I saw someplace in my phone that you could change to 3 Keyboard modes, Regular phone keyboard, and full keybord and a nother one!
Now i cant find that anywhere!
I wanna use the "Regular" phone keyboard type .. Any one can help here ?

Not sure if this helps but just open a SMS, at the bottom you will see the symbol for your input. Tap it once and a small arrow appears to the right, now tap the symbol again but slightly to the right (ie/ tapping the arrow) and you will see QWERTY with an arrow allowing you to choose phone keypad or qwerty.
both arent bad and the predictive input is clever but i personally prefer Touchpal, i find it more responsive and fast (it keeps up with fast keystroke entry).
Thanks for the replay, i found the arrow after more searching in google! it was stupid of me that i didnt tap that! lol
i did tap the hole keyboard icon insted!
Now i can type much easyer
I used touchpro 1 before using HD2, still finding typing with hardware keyboard faster. Especially if you disable auto complete, word correction.
but I still love my HD2.
I have an energy rom. Would you happen to know how to switch back to the way the original keypad looked before the 1.8 client?
I enjoyed the X1's HW keyboard, but I must say, within a few days of using the HD2, I don't miss it.

SYWPE or Old HTC Magic Black Keyboard on Desire

Is there any way to use the old keyboard on the Desire? I dont like the Desires stock keyboard, its difficult to type using it. I was fine with the HTC Magic, but with the Hero and this i still make mistakes often, 6 months later! grrrr
I was also trying to get Swype onto it but it says its installed but its not there...
i put swype on a friend's incredible yesterday, shouldn't be a problem. you probably just haven't selected it, if you installed it. long press on a text input field, and choose input method when the window pops up. just choose swype.

[Q] Regarding keyboard auto-input and correcting

Hello all,
I've searched through the G2 forums and this one but couldn't find the fix I was hoping for.
On my G1, whenever I typed two spaces after a word it automatically put in a period. I liked that. My DZ also does that. Good stuff.
However, when I forgot to capitalize the letter 'i' in a sentence it would magically change it to a capital on my G1, the DZ doesn't do that and needs two keystrokes.
Can I change a setting somewhere? All I have is Prediction in my menu, and I don't like to use that as it created more work for me than it was worth.
Perhaps using the HTC IME from the G1 ROM?
I sure did like that keyboard layout on the G1 (and it's prediction), too bad we lost the top keyboard row of dedicated numbers; it now takes me twice as long to bang out my epithets.

I have turned on the predictive txt, then added I'm to the dictionary. Then when you type im, even though the green highlighted word still shows "im", it will insert it as I'm.
Hope it works for you and isn't a fluke for me, I'll be well annoyed if I have to keep adding it. Fingers crossed.
Hey ddotpatel!
You were on to something there, and it made me dig...
I prefer to not have the predictive text turned on as I'm worried that it slows down my phone...
I found that in Settings, Language & Keyboard, Touch Input, International Keyboard the Français(Canadian) keyboard was also checked.
Unchecking Français(Canadian) reverted my keyboard to the input I came to know and love on my G1.
The standalone letter 'i' now capitalizes in mid-sentence, and 'im' now converts to 'I'm' after the space key, exactly the way I wanted it.
I guess Bell (Canada) sells these units all across the country and has one default setting to satisfy both official languages.
Thanks for the suggestion.
