with more than 500 contacts in my phone, it really slows me down when texting.
i have to wait at least 5 sec before the first letter shows uo?
anyone knows why?

karhu has put together some excellent benchmarks for ROM's. Do some research and pick one that you like:

Personally they all can be slow when accessing the contact list...
I use palm threaded sms and it takes 5 seconds to show contacts and i've only got a handfull, not 500....

If you have one of the latest roms install u probably have schaps advanced config tool. If not u can get it in the forum.
Open it and go to performance tap and try changing file cache from auto to 1024 see if that helps.

Hi all!
I`m new to this excellent board, even though I`ve been lurking for years. Lots of really skilled people here, awesome.
Anyways, as I`m waiting for my new Xperia I wondered if someone could put together a list of "essential" xperia fixes/add-ons/software, i.e. stuff that should be done right out of the box sort to say?
Nothing I hate more than to use a toy like this for a few months only to then stumble across a fix for something I`ve annoyed myself half to death over.
If such a list already exists, please disregard this post.
N.B: I noticed the sticky list of fixes and tweaks above, just wondered which of these were essential for the basic functions/performance of the handset.
well basicly the X1 just works.
i found my original rom work realy stable but it was also kinda slow. tried some updates and fixes which work but none of them was essential.
flashed a new rom yesterday and i have to say .. wow its like 2 times faster now but also 4x more unstable and acts kinda strange from time to time.
so in short, nothing is needed, all can be done

what rom did u flash to?
Thanks for reply!
But 2x faster, thats kindof a big deal, isn`t it? Especially given that the main letdown of the Xperia (based on the reviews I`ve read) is that it suffers of the typical WM6-lag?
Are there no official OS or ROM-updates from SE (planned or released) that handles these issues? I presume that there`s much potential to unlock just by optimalizing these things?

Touch-IT 2.1
but the Opera is pretty messed up plus it hangs from time to time with no reason (simple task closing seems to be enough)
gonna try 2.2 tonight but i dont have much faith
@Doderlei
non official ROM. just keep in mind that if u flash those none official ones u usualy break something else. it is faster indeed, panel switching doesnt have any lag for me now but i dont use panels anyway. also my vodfone internet connection acts strange. IE works fine but the Opera wont open any site unless i set a proxy. my (hard)keyboard is missing the space key when using putty and so on.
Well I don't tweak my device since I rather don't do these things, try to have my device as clean as possible, and those tweaks are always a bit dangerous - IMO...
But for me ESSENTIAL was to install FlashLite 3.1 and YouTube. That added a lot of functionality.
Also, as well as there are still some email sending problems (WM generally), I installed WM email hotfix, and also ProfiMail mail application.
Also immediatley upgraded Google Maps to 2.3 (original od device: 2.1).

No offense but I don't know how you can claim 2x faster. I have tried all the ROMs here and none seems to feel 2x faster. Even if they were faster, the difference was minimal.
in my opinion if u really want manila kind of interface then only install new rom as manila, tf3d doesn't work in landscape. as Dom said keep it as clean as possible. certain other must do are-
- do all your experiments in begninig of installing or trying apps and then hard reset and clean install all apps which u think u required and working well.
- use cleaning tools like cleartemp req very less memory
- always have backup of device with all settings whenever u feel that your phone is in
best state.spritebackup is recommended.
- separately u may use pim backup utilty for fast backup of pim.
- apply file cache and font cache tweak and clsid tweak as discussed in Martin thread it will significantly imrove speed of x1

i had an official Vodafone germany rom before.
pressing the panel button took me like 2 seconds till something happend. switching a panel took like 3-8 seconds. opening opera took up to 10 seconds and opening webpages was realy slow.
i did some tweaks then (increasing caache, installed SD tuner, etc) and it turn to be a little faster. but still nothing impressive.
believe me if i say that the touch-IT ROM is like 2 times faster. hecks its 4 times faster
but that could be an all messed up Vodafone ROM. and we all know VF tends to mess up ROMs

they do? curses... i ordered mine from the UK, and it said it was vodafone-brand (even though it is unlocked to all networks and carriers). does that mean i oughta flash the ROM to something else ASAP?
vodafone usualy locks features, blocks services, adds own software and so on.
WLAN f.e. didnt work with messenger and a few other services. just so u have a reason to buy their messenger flatrates or web traffic. my n95 had the same problems and most of my other vodafone branded one too. its kinda easy to override those brandings in windows mobile, but its also anoying.
you dont need to flash ur phone, but i have to say ... the touch-it is realy freakin fast. just reflashed cmEX GER and its noticable slower. but its german hehe ^^

So I can carry with me my backups and open whenever I want??

Thanks, I have seen that, but that is not really a fix. It just checks every few minutes and turns BT back on if its off. Bluetooth shouldnt be shutting off in the first place, especially while I am using it. Is this a problem with all ROMs?

is there an application you can hotlink to the home key by pressing and holding to make a android like task manger/switching functions or just making switching plain easier ?
is there a way to add multiple screens to windows mobile?
and how well does that windows phone 7 early build work?
oh yeah is there a app or a rom that auto kills all but system apps and music player like android
thanks in advance i know this annoys a few people on here
The answer to most of your questions is YES, but with a big "Depends" attached to it ...
There is a task manager in WM, and most cooked roms have one built in "touch the upper left of the screen"
Tell you the truth could not tell you much about a Stock one , I blasted the stock rom within about 15 minutes of owning the phone ..
Multiple screens ?? you mean multiple launch screens, yes, you mean true multitasking yes(most of the multitasking is solved by a good task manager) ..
but there are multiple interfaces available for WM and for the HD2 so again someone that has played with a stock one may want to wade in here ...
Windows 7 Not on this phone yet .... there are some tweaks to make it look like W7 Phone but not yet ...
Not sure of an app that kills all but the music player , but there are several apps around that kills everything but the shell ...
I would tell this to anybody going from one phone type to another, be it Android to Windows , Iphone to Android, IPhone to Windows, or Windows to IPhone , "Forget what you know about the previous phone, this one is different if you want an Iphone , have an IPhone , you want Android , stick with Android, don't try to make one OS behave like another until that OS actually runs on that phone", that will make you stress a whole lot less ...
I hope that helps ...
i have had windows mobile before with my dash iwas willing to give it ago after such along time but not being able to switch between task easy is a pain thanks
Search for ArkSwitch , nice task manager, I think by default it sets itself to the top left corner, but can be set other places ... ...
I had a Dash, was a nice little phone, it had a task manager, but was weird to access, I don't remember what it was, just remember it being weird ...

1.) Kiss it
2.) Hug it
3.) Stroke it
4.) Love it
5.) Wipe the mess from the first 4 off of it ....
But seriously ...
1.) I would start looking at what custom ROM you want on it, the Stock ones tend to SUCK.
2.) Make a full backup of your SD card.
3.) If your are gonna Flash a custom ROM HSPL it .
4.) Make a list and start Downloading your "Essential" Apps you want so you can have them ready, while the phone is getting its first full charge.
5.) See the first list .....
1) Sell it.
2) See point n.1
3) See point n.2
4) See point n.3
5) See point n.4
I'm kidding....
install these...
1.Coreplayer/TCPMP
2.FPSEce
3.Cookies Home Tab&CHT Editor
4.Some wallpapers/JMWD icon changer/and some icons
5.Skyfire browser
There's loads more, but that's a good start..
I've not bothered with a custom rom yet, as i've not had any trouble with the stock rom, but there's a load of custom roms and it looks like there's good progress being made with the Android port.
if you're in the uk I'd also recommend myplayer (iplayer and digital tv)
1. Find a decent Rom, or update to latest official release.
2. Cookies Home Tab
3. Install Opera Mobile 10
4. Get Resco Explorer
5. Get G-Alarm
Tip
Hi!
I would:
1. Try it for a week without tweaking it in any way. (then you have something to compare it to when you start tweaking and so on)
2. Meantime install Resco explorer, CorePlayer and apps you need.
3. Take a look at Co0kies Home Tab
4. Make sure to drain the battery a couple of times to get the best out of it.
5. Now you can start looking for a cooked ROM
1. Install a screenprotector and don't carry it around without it before.
2. HSPL
3. NRG ROM
4. Install ur software
5. Love it.

would do the same
just add pocketplayer to the appslist, much better than the standard htc player to listen to music ^^
Well I would suggest 5 steps to a beginner:
1. Backup your Outlook calender and contacts folders.
2. Sync these to the phone.
3. Read about what "cabs" are
4. 5 must have apps: a. Opera Mobile 10; b. copilot (navigation apps are like religion - I like this one); c. Resco explorer; d. Omarket (for freeware); e. AEButton+ (great for getting the volume keys to do extra things, like up/down)
5. Then explore XDA software forum and slowly get used to the device. Don't try to do too much at the start
The great thing about the windows mobile devices is you can change nearly everything; the bad thing about winmo is you can change nearly everything !

Well, assuming that you're not a stranger in ROM-flashing, just flash a into a custom ROM as fast as you can, really! Sorry to differ, but stock ROMs are mediocre. You can try THIS one.

I love that quote! Can I use it in my sig? I'll credit you
As for the OP, when I first got mine, I download a shed load of apps and tried all the tweaks going, basically completely changed everything. I then made a note of the apps and changes I wanted to keep/were stable and did a hard reset and reintalled the good ones, making sure I wouldn't have anything that would crash my phone later down the line.

I used the first week to install all kinds of recommended apps, without worrying about maybe ****ing things up.
Then after I managed to **** things up, I knew what apps I liked and did a hard reset and set it up correctly with just those apps.
I highly recommend the LMT launcher, which allows to start apps with gestures.

May I ask, what difference does it make when changing the rom from the original? What are the advantages?
Also can anyone help me with installing the ps eumlator and how to convert the games i have from my original ps cd's.

Chance is I'll have it running under a new ROM within an hour... Even if the stock is good enough, I'm just compelled to.

Well, I would suggest reading the ROMs thread, there are alot of advantages, some apply to more people than others ...
More or Less apps cooked into the ROM (hard resets give you more or less)
Customized
Some are more stable, and faster, some are faster and less stable some are slower but more stable ...
There is really too much about custom ROMs to sum up here, all I can say is , Read Read Read, and decide for yourself .....
thanks for that info watcher, much appreciated. Would it be ok if i pm you i have another question.

No problem .... PM away ....
I would use it a for a couple of weeks without changing anything. Give yourself some time to get used to the phone "as it is". After that, when you "own" the phone, I would gradually modify/expand it with some software/roms/tweaks.
The idea behind this is that you have to have a sollid fundament to work from (imo). If you don't have this base experience, there's the risk that you keep searching for the right customization... forever
my 2 cents
