Hi all!
I`m new to this excellent board, even though I`ve been lurking for years. Lots of really skilled people here, awesome.
Anyways, as I`m waiting for my new Xperia I wondered if someone could put together a list of "essential" xperia fixes/add-ons/software, i.e. stuff that should be done right out of the box sort to say?
Nothing I hate more than to use a toy like this for a few months only to then stumble across a fix for something I`ve annoyed myself half to death over.
If such a list already exists, please disregard this post.
N.B: I noticed the sticky list of fixes and tweaks above, just wondered which of these were essential for the basic functions/performance of the handset.
well basicly the X1 just works.
i found my original rom work realy stable but it was also kinda slow. tried some updates and fixes which work but none of them was essential.
flashed a new rom yesterday and i have to say .. wow its like 2 times faster now but also 4x more unstable and acts kinda strange from time to time.
so in short, nothing is needed, all can be done

what rom did u flash to?
Thanks for reply!
But 2x faster, thats kindof a big deal, isn`t it? Especially given that the main letdown of the Xperia (based on the reviews I`ve read) is that it suffers of the typical WM6-lag?
Are there no official OS or ROM-updates from SE (planned or released) that handles these issues? I presume that there`s much potential to unlock just by optimalizing these things?

Touch-IT 2.1
but the Opera is pretty messed up plus it hangs from time to time with no reason (simple task closing seems to be enough)
gonna try 2.2 tonight but i dont have much faith
@Doderlei
non official ROM. just keep in mind that if u flash those none official ones u usualy break something else. it is faster indeed, panel switching doesnt have any lag for me now but i dont use panels anyway. also my vodfone internet connection acts strange. IE works fine but the Opera wont open any site unless i set a proxy. my (hard)keyboard is missing the space key when using putty and so on.
Well I don't tweak my device since I rather don't do these things, try to have my device as clean as possible, and those tweaks are always a bit dangerous - IMO...
But for me ESSENTIAL was to install FlashLite 3.1 and YouTube. That added a lot of functionality.
Also, as well as there are still some email sending problems (WM generally), I installed WM email hotfix, and also ProfiMail mail application.
Also immediatley upgraded Google Maps to 2.3 (original od device: 2.1).

No offense but I don't know how you can claim 2x faster. I have tried all the ROMs here and none seems to feel 2x faster. Even if they were faster, the difference was minimal.
in my opinion if u really want manila kind of interface then only install new rom as manila, tf3d doesn't work in landscape. as Dom said keep it as clean as possible. certain other must do are-
- do all your experiments in begninig of installing or trying apps and then hard reset and clean install all apps which u think u required and working well.
- use cleaning tools like cleartemp req very less memory
- always have backup of device with all settings whenever u feel that your phone is in
best state.spritebackup is recommended.
- separately u may use pim backup utilty for fast backup of pim.
- apply file cache and font cache tweak and clsid tweak as discussed in Martin thread it will significantly imrove speed of x1

i had an official Vodafone germany rom before.
pressing the panel button took me like 2 seconds till something happend. switching a panel took like 3-8 seconds. opening opera took up to 10 seconds and opening webpages was realy slow.
i did some tweaks then (increasing caache, installed SD tuner, etc) and it turn to be a little faster. but still nothing impressive.
believe me if i say that the touch-IT ROM is like 2 times faster. hecks its 4 times faster
but that could be an all messed up Vodafone ROM. and we all know VF tends to mess up ROMs

they do? curses... i ordered mine from the UK, and it said it was vodafone-brand (even though it is unlocked to all networks and carriers). does that mean i oughta flash the ROM to something else ASAP?
vodafone usualy locks features, blocks services, adds own software and so on.
WLAN f.e. didnt work with messenger and a few other services. just so u have a reason to buy their messenger flatrates or web traffic. my n95 had the same problems and most of my other vodafone branded one too. its kinda easy to override those brandings in windows mobile, but its also anoying.
you dont need to flash ur phone, but i have to say ... the touch-it is realy freakin fast. just reflashed cmEX GER and its noticable slower. but its german hehe ^^

So I can carry with me my backups and open whenever I want??

If bluetooth randomly shutting off for anyone else? I am running jack's 1.04 lite. Does anyone have this problem with the stock ROM? I mainly just wanted a lite ROM with all the junk and panels removed and some performance tweaks done.
check the addons and fixes sticky thread. thers a mort script to fix that problem

Thanks, I have seen that, but that is not really a fix. It just checks every few minutes and turns BT back on if its off. Bluetooth shouldnt be shutting off in the first place, especially while I am using it. Is this a problem with all ROMs?

Thanks, that's awesome.
is it supposed to be this slow???
i'm restoring 500 odd texts using pim backup and once i have sent a text it seems to take upwards of 2 mins to get back to the home screen.
is it that the new messaging app just isnt supposed to be used with the Touch HD, or is it that i'm expecting too much of it to cope with 500 texts?
I personally think that htc has made htc messaging incompatible with our older chipsets, to stop developers porting sence 2.5 to older devices, maybe im wrong but im sure it works better on the HD 2

eactly spartan but our msm chipset are easly capable of running an app like htc messaging, i ment that i think htc have purposly made this app incompatible with chipsets older than snapdragon to prevent sence or part of sence being ported to older devices lol
ok, i can appreciate that snapdrage is much faster in terms of its processing power and speed.
what i dont understand is this.
am i the only one having this problem??
if i'm not, and its acknowledged that its too slow, why are chefs putting it in?
surley the whole idea behind most custom ROM's is that they are leaner and faster then the stock rom. if thats the case, why put something in thats slow to the point of being unuseable?

nope we all have the same problem lol
some chefs make roms with sence 2.5, with versions without htc messaging, but ofcourse there are always people that will moan because they have taken it out so they cant win lol the best way to keep it running smoothly it to empty ur inbox after maybe 10-15 text like i do but some people like to keep them inint lol
here is a link to XannyTech's latest rom, with sence 2.5 but with htc messaging taken owt
http://rapidshare.com/files/305257043/XT_GRIDLEO_2_1.rar
i'm one of the fussy ones i'm afraid.
i did install the Xannytech rom without the messaging installed, but i didnt like it to be honest.
is there any reason why the new sense cant be used with an older version of the messaging application which works better/faster?

im afraid thats waaaaaay owta my field of knowledge you will have to ask a chef about that, but i agree i think it would be great if someone could make a rom with sence 2.5 and the messaging app from 2.1
where is sherif spartan hiding lol maybe he knows
hope someone does, i dont really want to go back to WM6.1 to get a "working" rom
I can confirm it's slow on the HTC HD2 .. ( I just got it this morning ).
I have a contact with > 500 messages, and it took me around 20 seconds to even load the keyboard to reply the sms.

Well thats cheered me up must be the app then, hopefully HTC will sort it out then we can rob it for our HD's lol
im tempted to revert to a non htc messaging rom...it really is starting to bother me when trying to quick reply to txt messages
I've been experiencing this SMS issue for quite some time and I'm really getting annoyed. Not at the chef's, not at the rom's but at HTC's messaging app.
What is slowing it down so much? My old PC with 233MHz could run windows XP (just mind you) so why can't this 500MHz not run a simple task of, grab all sms's for the contact, display on screen and allow quick sms replies?
I'm sick of people reporting on ROM's that their Twitter doesn't work or god forbid the music landscape mode doesn't display the buttons properly at the bottom.
At the end of the day, this is a mobile phone with 'smart capabilities' but shouldn't we concentrate on the more important things, the simple tasks that it should be capable of without a 1GHz processor.
Saving a contact without creating an Unknown one automatically and forcing you to go through and EDIT it. (Experienced this with some ROMs)
The theory of HTC purposely doing something on purpose so that some aspects of Manilla 2.5 don't work on 'older' devices doesn't sound bad anymore.
Also, I've started a few discussions on this unfortunate messaging issue and haven't gotten anywhere with them, it's as if people use the HTC just for twitter and facebook Maybe get an iPhone since it's made for useless junk.
i dont know why you guys are so obsessed with keeping your HD's so uptodate with updates that arent even meant for the device itself.. not to cut down on any of the amazing work the chefs do around here but i think they should've stopped since manila 2.5 came out. the cooked roms for manila 2 with windows 6.1 are so great and with it you expect your basic phone functions to work like it should plus all the other aspect you use your phone in. I am a happy owner of an HD with onkolgic ROM manila 2 6.1 windows mobile and i could not imagine myself flashing another rom after this one since I dont see the device getting any better than what it is right now. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=525307
those who are experiencing troubles with their new flashed roms should really consider going a step back to the software that was meant for our device and accept it's limited capabilities though i dont see myself falling behind.. for now
sorry for the double post but i am so happy with my device i had to show you guys a picture or two lol.. anyway and forgot to say that my device it totally bug free and what more can i ask for..
Very well said inspireme87!!! So much geeks leecher who cannot stop to flash ROMs of geek cookers who are obssessed with the newest brand new version of any useless app... and forgot the essential needs : stability and reactivity!
You all talk-sh***ers should looking for this compromise instead of always flashing the newest ****...
MOD EDIT - Removed inappropriate language
It's bugged the HTC Messaging app, even on the HD2 users are experiencing a LOT of lag with many SMS stored and sometimes it doesn't send the SMS but keep them in the outgoing folder until the next softreset.
So keep the finger crossed and let's wait for a fix from HTC!

I assume you are using stock rom?
Sometimes slowdown could be due to installation of a software. Try to think of any software that might cause the slowdown.
But I think slowdown is unavoidable for most electronic devices, a month old laptop can never be compared to a same but new one.
If you wish, you can consider trying out some custom roms. They generally has better performance compared stock roms. Less junks and faster.

Installing a new ROM will remove all the stuff on phone memory. It's just like reformating a pc. If you don't like the rom, you can always try another rom.
There are plenty of stuff you need to know first before flashing a rom.
If you are new to this, make sure you read alot before doing anything to your phone. Everything you need to know can be found in the ROm Development section.

I'd recommend the Leopard 6.5.5 ROM, once you enter PIN, after that it's instantly usable, been using it for a few months now, constantly amazes me.
1) try to think if you really need the application before you will install it. Most of the apps leave lots of garbage after you uninstall them, so the phone is getting slower and slower.
2) use the program like cleanRAM
3) there is no "the ultimate ROM" - try a few - if you dont like particular one - try another. Just do not fall into the 'ROM changing addiction'
4) there is the difference between 6.5 and 6.5.x. If you used the stock ROM only, and you are used to have "Start" on top then (with 6.5.x) you will fill odd having the start on bottom - dont worry - you will use to that

its a program that clears all apps running in background and uses the free RAM for quicker processing.
also, I would recommend you to use a task manager in order to actually close applications after your donee using them instead off just minimizing them. because if you were like me when I first got my phone, I was so used to the iphone/android lack of multitasking, that I would always just push the home button to exit out of apps.however windows leaves them running in the background which causes a lotof slowdowns.
slowing down....confusing?
hi every body....
i've in some how the same problem...i mean the slowing down...
but i think the word i use is a little incorrect...because my phone works fast, and well but for example sometimes when i go to mesages, for a few seconds it slows down in changing messeges and then again works as fast as possible...or as an other example some times this happens in my contact list or my home screen...esp. when the weather is cloudy and lots of clouds are moving in my home screen
but i think the overall perfomance of my phone is still like the begining day...
i thought that the problem is due to some programs that i have installed like showcase task manager or touch x power but i removed them and still some times esp. in my home screen i have the problem!?
and by the way i''m using stock rom,WM 6.5 1.66.707 WWE and í've bought my HD2 about a week ago...
i'll be glad if any one knows about how the problem could be solved?!...or even to say that it's a problem or not!?...tnx
same here
yeah i've barely had the phone about two weeks and within the first three days it started slowing down. ESPECIALLY in the messages, and even more when i had the swype text input so i took that off. and at times i wouldnt even recieve the message. my phone's screen would light up as if i was about to get a message and i checked nothing was there but my friends told me they texted me and apparently i didnt receive. i want to try a new rom. but i really dont understand what cab files, tweaks, and things of that sort are. i've rooted my g1 before but never messed with a windows phone
Yeah this is really starting annoy me, I don't want to install a new ROM as I don't understand them but I want my phone back up to speed. Need more ideas please

Well i dont exactly now but for sure all your programs. Sms and contacts can you backup with MyPhone or copy contacts to simcard or synchronize them with outlook.
Edit I investogated a little bit spb backup also backups contacts, sms and email. so only spb nacup should be enough.

Well it is simple you make a complete backup with spb backup. Then do hardreset and your done .
PS: Sorry for my bad text input typing on a phone is still not the same as a keyboard
There's no need for any hard resets. Connect your phone to a PC and check out how much free space your device (NOT the SD card) has left. If it's below 30, then there's your problem. Just use cleartemp and cleanram, move games and other apps from the phone memory to the card, and you should be ok. If the problems still persist, then I strongly advise you to flash a new ROM and see if things get any better. Peace!

Hello, i am running 1.66 rom on a generic htc hd2 with a t-mobile contract.
I cant update to the very latest rom because theyve only released it for branded phones!
The first bug ive comes across is the Facebook profile pictures in my favourites list sometimes switch around betweeen different people, so say joe's profile picture appears on bills name! happens every so often, and its very irritating. the only solution is to delete both contacts and re enter them into the phone!
The second is when im texting, at the start of the text, after i have done a few characters, sometimes it scrolls up to the last text and selects it, meaning i can still type, but i cant see what im typing, the keyboard covers everything im typing.
Incredibly irritating, i then have to minimize the keyboard, then maximize it aagain.
Also, a new occurance, when i switch on my phone it says launching htc sence and stays there for ages, when i click the cross, i get onto my phone, its as if sence had already loaded and just not removing the message.
The next thing is the wifi, is it meant to switch off affter a while? my battery went from 100 percent to 0 in about 5 hours! (not even joking) i just leaave it off now..
OOh and whilst im at it, one more thing. Can you sync your emails over data conneection? It always displays 'synchronisation error' when ever i try to sync over data connection, but on wifi it connects and downloads perfectly!
Any ideas on any of these issues? has anyone else experienced them?
thanks in advance

I don't use the Facebook app as it is absolutely usless, but after a search I found this -'Go into all people then select your contact. Then select Edit Contact. Then press where the profile picture should be. A 'Set Contact Photo' option should pop up. Next to the Facebook profile it should have a downloading icon. Once that was done i selected Facebook Profile and all was working.'

There is an SMS update from the HTC website, but I believe this just addresses SMS failure to deliver issues. However, flashing a custom ROM with 235xx (WM 6.5.x) will definately eliminate this problem, as it uses a different SMS application. I'd assume flashing a custom 21907 (WM 6.5) would fix it too.

I get this regularly (and also having the keyboard go mental sometimes, switching character sets, entering characters when I'm trying to backspace etc). Seems worse when the phone's hot or when I'm outside and it's windy! But that might just be a coincidence.
I actually sent the phone back to HTC a month or two ago (their customer service was fantastic btw - picked up the phone on a Monday, I had it back by Friday all by courier).
There was a note in there saying they'd reconnected the touchscreen. Everything seemed okay for a while but it's doing it again (I've never dropped the phone or anything). Wonder if it's a loose connector or something.
Mine's unbranded, so I'm waiting for the next ROM update (currently 1.66). If that doesn't fix it I'll ask for a replacement phone (not a fixed one).

253xx puts the Start button at the bottom of the screen and makes menus and scroll bars bigger, it's called WM 6.5.x.
219xx is the stock look with the Start button at the top and no so finger friendly menu systems.
That's the basics of the differences between them both.
ok thanks i think ill installl standard reference energy rom 235xx one.
Do i need to change my radio before i flash? i have hspl installed.
The reason being is that i have changed the radio rom before and the signal was no where near as good as the stock radio rom. So i flashed back.

If you have an international HD2 you have to install a 2.xx.50.xx radio before you flash the Energy ROM. if you leave a 2.xx.51.xx radio on the device you'll brick it.
ok thanks, im gonna update the rom now. The rom i have currently is far superior, but i will flash anyway and make the compromise.
Thanks

There was a note in there saying they'd reconnected the touchscreen. Everything seemed okay for a while but it's doing it again (I've never dropped the phone or anything). Wonder if it's a loose connector or something.
Mine's unbranded, so I'm waiting for the next ROM update (currently 1.66). If that doesn't fix it I'll ask for a replacement phone (not a fixed one).

Thank you for your feedback!
And also thank you the OP who posted about that SMS problem- which I kept reporting with no echoes.
1) Yeah "reconnected the touchscreen" my @ss. That problem was fixed as soon as I changed ROM.
2) "theres a patch for problem with SMS", my @ss, I installed it did not fix anything- Also, if you read the rom's releases notes everything is "fixing the sms". They forget to mention that they moved the "task manager" in rom 1.66 and changed a few other things-
3) i still had lot of bugs with that rom and device. Now some of them are removed and I'm using Artemis 22A- A few bugs but all minor so far- so I finally start to "enjo..."erm hard word to say after so many months of troubles.
4) also for the "quietly brilliant support" you mention, I would not be so happy if you really knows what happens there: it's likely they will swap your device with 2nd hand device as they discontinued the manufacture of new devices. Also they had shortage of 1 part and they took it from random devices...
My point is you also risk to get 2nd spares part or the whole 2nd hand part... not too nice as it does not means that the original fault/flaw is fixed, and its gambling until your warranty expires...
After pondering which phone to get for months, and whilst everything pointed to getting the Desire... I just couldn't resist!! I'm a slave to WinMo after my HTC Diamond
So any way, it arrives, I have a silent orgasm, open it up...
What are the next 5 essential things I should do?

1.) Kiss it
2.) Hug it
3.) Stroke it
4.) Love it
5.) Wipe the mess from the first 4 off of it ....
But seriously ...
1.) I would start looking at what custom ROM you want on it, the Stock ones tend to SUCK.
2.) Make a full backup of your SD card.
3.) If your are gonna Flash a custom ROM HSPL it .
4.) Make a list and start Downloading your "Essential" Apps you want so you can have them ready, while the phone is getting its first full charge.
5.) See the first list .....
1) Sell it.
2) See point n.1
3) See point n.2
4) See point n.3
5) See point n.4
I'm kidding....
install these...
1.Coreplayer/TCPMP
2.FPSEce
3.Cookies Home Tab&CHT Editor
4.Some wallpapers/JMWD icon changer/and some icons
5.Skyfire browser
There's loads more, but that's a good start..
I've not bothered with a custom rom yet, as i've not had any trouble with the stock rom, but there's a load of custom roms and it looks like there's good progress being made with the Android port.
if you're in the uk I'd also recommend myplayer (iplayer and digital tv)
1. Find a decent Rom, or update to latest official release.
2. Cookies Home Tab
3. Install Opera Mobile 10
4. Get Resco Explorer
5. Get G-Alarm
Tip
Hi!
I would:
1. Try it for a week without tweaking it in any way. (then you have something to compare it to when you start tweaking and so on)
2. Meantime install Resco explorer, CorePlayer and apps you need.
3. Take a look at Co0kies Home Tab
4. Make sure to drain the battery a couple of times to get the best out of it.
5. Now you can start looking for a cooked ROM
1. Install a screenprotector and don't carry it around without it before.
2. HSPL
3. NRG ROM
4. Install ur software
5. Love it.

would do the same
just add pocketplayer to the appslist, much better than the standard htc player to listen to music ^^
Well I would suggest 5 steps to a beginner:
1. Backup your Outlook calender and contacts folders.
2. Sync these to the phone.
3. Read about what "cabs" are
4. 5 must have apps: a. Opera Mobile 10; b. copilot (navigation apps are like religion - I like this one); c. Resco explorer; d. Omarket (for freeware); e. AEButton+ (great for getting the volume keys to do extra things, like up/down)
5. Then explore XDA software forum and slowly get used to the device. Don't try to do too much at the start
The great thing about the windows mobile devices is you can change nearly everything; the bad thing about winmo is you can change nearly everything !

Well, assuming that you're not a stranger in ROM-flashing, just flash a into a custom ROM as fast as you can, really! Sorry to differ, but stock ROMs are mediocre. You can try THIS one.
These guys are VERY wise, indeed.

I love that quote! Can I use it in my sig? I'll credit you
As for the OP, when I first got mine, I download a shed load of apps and tried all the tweaks going, basically completely changed everything. I then made a note of the apps and changes I wanted to keep/were stable and did a hard reset and reintalled the good ones, making sure I wouldn't have anything that would crash my phone later down the line.

Feel free to use the Quote - no credit needed
I used the first week to install all kinds of recommended apps, without worrying about maybe ****ing things up.
Then after I managed to **** things up, I knew what apps I liked and did a hard reset and set it up correctly with just those apps.
I highly recommend the LMT launcher, which allows to start apps with gestures.

May I ask, what difference does it make when changing the rom from the original? What are the advantages?
Also can anyone help me with installing the ps eumlator and how to convert the games i have from my original ps cd's.
Some great replies and suggestions here guys thanks a lot!!
Chance is I'll have it running under a new ROM within an hour... Even if the stock is good enough, I'm just compelled to.
Can anyone suggest a good screen protector??

Well, I would suggest reading the ROMs thread, there are alot of advantages, some apply to more people than others ...
More or Less apps cooked into the ROM (hard resets give you more or less)
Customized
Some are more stable, and faster, some are faster and less stable some are slower but more stable ...
There is really too much about custom ROMs to sum up here, all I can say is , Read Read Read, and decide for yourself .....
thanks for that info watcher, much appreciated. Would it be ok if i pm you i have another question.

No problem .... PM away ....
I would use it a for a couple of weeks without changing anything. Give yourself some time to get used to the phone "as it is". After that, when you "own" the phone, I would gradually modify/expand it with some software/roms/tweaks.
The idea behind this is that you have to have a sollid fundament to work from (imo). If you don't have this base experience, there's the risk that you keep searching for the right customization... forever
my 2 cents
