Can anyone tell me if the HD2 is compatible with 3G in Costa Rica? The USB stick that is used by the telephone company has the following specs:
HSDPA/UMTS 850/1900/2100MHz
EDGE/GPRS/GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz

I ask because the Telstra HD2 (UMTS 850/2100) is coming out here in Australia -- where I'm holidaying -- on Tuesday. Back home -- in Canada -- my provider (Telus) uses UMTS 850/1900.
It's been suggested to me on these forums and told to me by a tech support representative for Telus (I have a hard time trusting them, however, because they're kind of dumb) that the phone'll work on 3G with just the 850 band in common with the network, but I want to be sure.
I've done some reading on Wikipedia [also], and that seems to encourage the idea that my phone'll work back in Canada...but again...I want to be sure...
I tried doing research for you and I found out Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) has contracted Huawei to build the network but unfortunatly you will need to find out that 3G frequency, could be 1900 or 2100.
The HD2 uses 2100. The USB Modem works in all frequencies so it would work everywhere.
All you need to do is find out the 3G frequency, perhaps give them a call.
From My experience travelling to Mexico, Guatemala, USA and Canada. All use 1900 3G (Except T-mobile USA uses 2100).
I haven't tried the T-mobile 2100 though so I cannot assure you if it in fact does work. I've only tried AT&T(USA), Telcel(MEX), Tigo(Guatemala) and Claro (Guatemala)
Chances are Costa Rica would fall in line with the rest of North America.
So only Edge works.

OK, now I'm confused! It is my understanding that 3G is NOT available from T-Mobile USA using the current version of the HD2. If the HD2 uses 2100 AND T-Mobile uses the same, why is 3G not available on the HD2 in the US?
If 3G isn't available in Costa Rica because of the 1900/2100 issue, is Edge automatically available? Or could ICE simply ONLY offer 3G, with no Edge alternative?

en costa rica no te va a funcionar, salvo que tu compañia utilice 3g umts2100, y por lo que vengo leyendo utiliza umts 850, o sea que no te va a funcionar...
algo similar me pasa a mi, yo estoy en uruguay con movistar y aqui el 3g es 850/1900, asi que mi querida hd2 no funciona en 3g, igualmente corre en EDGE sin ningun problema...

Telus, like AT&T in the States, puts 3G service on 850 MHz in some towns and on 1900 MHz in other places. Since the Testra version of the HD2 does support 850, you'll get 3G in Canada in markets where Telstra uses 850. If you travel to a Canadian city where they use 1900, your HD2 will fall back to EDGE.
So, you need to find out if Telus uses 850 in your home market before buying that Telstra phone. (By the way, JB HiFi has it for $829A now and Telstra will have it at that price on 1/19.) I can't help with where you can quickly find which frequencies are active in your area, but a friend back home may be a better source than a Telus rep. Good luck.

First of all, T-Mobile USA's 3G freq is 1700mhz or AWS, which is why the T-Mobile version of the HD2 is coming out later. Europe's 3G is on the 2100MHZ freq. You can definitely import a Euro HD2 to the U.S and use it on GSM voice but data would only do EDGE either on T-Mobile USA or AT&T.

The problem here is that Telus and Bell in Canada are CDMA carriers. From what I understand, the EDGE fallback is GSM, so if there's no 850 UMTS service, my phone just doesn't get service.

Would like clarification on this if possible...
What would happen if I buy the Australian unlocked version (Telstra's NextG with 850MHz 3G); will it work in the 3G in Costa Rica. And if I don't like the Telstra's ROM, can I flash it with the original HTC ROM desgned for Australia?

I'm sorry for disappearing for several days...I forgot that I posted here.
Telus also runs an HSPA network. A quick look through their phones shows several models with HSPA, including the HTC Hero with HSPA on 850 and 1900 along with quad-band GSM. The Telstra HD2 (HTC T9193) has HSPA on 850 and 2100 along with quad-band GSM.
Call Telus and find out how wide-spread the HSPA network is. If it covers the areas where you go and if you live in a place that uses 850 for HSPA service, then the Telstra version of the HD2 will work for you. If you live in a 1900 area, you'll fall back to EDGE. If you live in a CMDA-only area, you'll have spent a lot money on a phone that can't make phone calls.

Okay, excellent.
This is what I was concerned about -- I wasn't sure about EDGE fallback because of the CDMA/UMTS issue.
Telus' UMTS coverage is actually larger than their CDMA coverage, so that aspect isn't a problem.
I'd already gone ahead and bought the phone...JB HiFi was having a hard time keeping them in stock.
Looking forward to getting this up-and-running in Canada (running on a Vodafone pre-paid SIM at the moment) on Saturday.

Remember, if Telus is using only 1900 MHz for UMTS where you live, the HD2 will only pick up EDGE since it has no UMTS radio at 1900. If Telus runs both 850 and 1900 or just 850, you'll be very happy.

I've just bought HD2 in Hong Kong. It is an unbranded unlocked phone. On Phone Settings i see the Band menu where i can select Network Type and Band Frecuency. i've selected GSM and GSM (1900 + 850), but hd2 only navigates on EDGE. i've also have tried selecting Auto on both Network and Band Selection, but still navigating on EDGE.
besides of HD2 i also have an Samsung Omnia bought from my cell operator (Movilnet), it is set to operate on 850 1900 mhz and it works fine on 3g and hsdpa.
my question is, if the hd2 has all bands that i could select, why it dosen't work on 3G or HSDPA.
could i flash my hd2 with other Firmware or ROM, to get 3G working? i've been reading about TELSTRA in Australia, and i think the hd2 they sell has 3G over 850 and/or 1900 mhz.

The device does not come with all 3G bands and that is why devices that are sold in specific regions only work where bands are the same. Where the bands are different, they will not work.
Thus, if your device is not 3G compatible in your area, there is no firmware drivers that can help as this is to do with hardware components in the device. Getting the right device for your region is paramount.

Is HTC doing something to phones for each carrier to lock the phone to a specific carriers 3G network and no other.
I'm asking because I was talking with a freind of mine who was given a HD2 as a part of a promotion for use on AT&T 3G network (850/2100). He uses T-Mobile and tried to get it to work with his T-Mobile SIM with no success. He also told me he had a conversation with someone from HTC that told him that he would no beable to get his HD2 to work on T-Mobile because the hardware will not work with T-Mobiles 3G network (1700/2100).
If this is the case does anyone know if it changable, is it a Firmware issue that can be changed or is it like hard wired physically?
Then the question is if we are buying these phone, some through contracts others outright, do we want to told whos service we have to use!!

3g is radio/hardware dependent. he'll unfortunately be stuck on EDGE.
He will have no issues using the phone with T-mobile usa. He will not get 3G because of the bands. He will just have edge. But calls, mms, text, email, and internet will all function properly.

So you are on Claro in Peru?
For 3G you need a phone with 3G 1900 support. If it is the T-Mobile version, that would have 3G on 1700/2100 bands which would be no good. If you got an AT&T handset (850/1900) it would work for 3G for you.
You need to understand what 3G support your version of the phone has. For example mine (Telstra Australia) is 850/2100 - which would not be able to pick up 3G in your network - however it works excellent with Telstra (850) in Australia and currently working well with StarHub (2100) in Singapore.
Your phone is quad band - but that is GSM quadband not 3G - it is 3G dual band and that is what is important for your connection.

No, but the Telstra HD2 will pick up the 850MHz signals where they exist. There is no HD2 with the 1900MHz UMTS band at the moment

Erm, so AT&T gives a phone, for promotion of their service, and at the same time they should allow you to use another network? You've got too much hope there...

Hello, I have a HTC HD 2, and I need to change the Radio Frequency to work with 3G for my carrier. I am using Telcel in Mexico and the frequency for 3G is different than what came with the phone so all I can get is Edge with this phone. Telcel's frequency is compatible with AT&T as I have used my AT&T phones without any problem with Telcel 3G so there must be a difference somewhere. This is what iPhone shows is its frequency so I imagine that the same would work with this phone:
UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!!
Did you try any rom or Radio...
Maybe need to look something on setting...

I beleive it is a US version but I bought it used off a guy on ebay... Any way I can find out?

We have gone into the settings and the settings are on Auto and we tried through the settings and advanced settings and the frequencies do not match what we need for Telcel so I am assuming some kind of modification can be done? Maybe it is in a hidden menu?

Sorry pal, but Mexico, as most american countries, uses the 850/1900 3G UMTS bands...
The most common sold version of the HD2, the so called 'european', supports 900/2100 bands, so you won't ever make it work with your country 3G. IT IS NOT something that can be configured, or even flashing other Radios or ROMs, it won't change it.. it is hard-coded on the on board 3G chip.
Right now, if you really want HD2 with 3G in your country, your only choice is get the 'Telstra' version (T9193) from Australia (e.g. EBAY)... it supports the 850Mhz 3G band, so it should work on your country.
As i live in Argentina, i did the same, bought such version, and it works with my country 3G operators....
Really, don't even waste more time investigating this matter. you won't be able to do it.

Your HD2 must have been made for EU / Asia market: Model T8585 (UMTS 900/2100 Mhz)
The HD2 that's compatible with AT&T will be the only one from Australia carried by Telsta: Model T9193 (850/2100 Mhz)
How do you you know if this is Australia or EU/Asia verion - look at the back of the phone below the battery cover. If EU / Asia version, nothing would be showing but if it's Australia version you would see this "Next G network / T".

Remove the battery and see the model! it it is T8585 then forget about 3G! You will never make it work!
I'm goin to buy T-Mobile Unlocked HTC HD2 I just wondered if it will work in Israel even though its T-Mobile branded and unlocked

You would have to know exactly what bands your carrier uses (there's several in use in Europe too), but even then the US T-Mobile HD2 probably won't get 3G service where you are, I believe that this is the only country that uses those specific bands for 3G. You could use the phone in your country, but it would only get EDGE speeds.
You would be better off getting the Euro version of the HD2.
after some research i found out that my operator uses this bands 850/2100
and in T-Mobile specs it says
Band (frequency): 850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz;UMTS: Band I (2100);UMTS: Band IV (AWS);UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100)
and another question if i wont 3g reception i get the "H" would it matter alot or only abit that i wouldnt be able to go through internet and stuff

thanx for the reply. telus side is surely selling gsm devices i guess. so maybe they r onn. not sure though. but other than rogers, are there any other gsm networks in toronto?
although i don use 3g at al so not a big deal for me as long as gsm works and only if sometimes req edge shd work. thats it.
also right now am in india, and i have tmobile usa HD2. moving to canada next week, is there any chance the customs ppl will have an eye on my cell phone and ask for its details? i bought it 4m ebay. if there is anything anyone know in this respect then do let me know(kinda off topic).

I was thinking to buy an HD2 from t-mobile on ebay but I don't know if this will work on my italian sim, as far as I have understand by reading here and there on the forum, the T-mobile version of the HD2 operate on 1700/2100 mhz 3g frequency while almost all european carrier use only 2100 ( I got H3G on italy ...)..what do you think ?
I have also noticed that I can only install specific t-mobile custom roms on this device as the one created for the european model will brick it ..
why not just get the EU HD2 instead? Yes, the TMOUS works on 1700/2100 for 3G.
beucase the european HD2 cost much more then t-mobile version...
ah ok. I don't know if it will work with EU 3G, you may need to search this forum to find out.

i have a hd2 usa model and it works fine in the netherlands. I am busy to flash the rom the a dutch version with help from this forum.

I bought a tmous one month ago and it´s running fine with vodafone 3G in Spain. This company also use 2100 frequency
it use only 2100 or 1700 and 2100 like t mobile ? because as far as I know this is not the same...
As far as I know the TMO US HD2 will only work on 1700 AND 2100 for 3G. I believe the phone uses 1700 for the transmit band and 2100 for the receive band. It cannot simultaneously transmit and receive on only 1700 or 2100. The combination of 1700/2100 is called the AWS band. If you use the HD2 in an area without AWS band coverage, then it should just fall back to old 2G GSM GPRS/EDGE
While looking at prices for the HD2, you are looking at the buy outright prices correct? these prices generally go from $450-500. The $199 offers you see for the TMO HD2 are for TMO customers who lock into a 2 year contract. You will also need to obtain a SIM unlock code from TMO US to use any other carriers SIM in this phone. You can only get a SIM unlock code after completing 3 months of your contract term.
regarding the AWS I don't know if italy is cover by this signal, as far as I know H3G in italy use only 2100 mhz like almost the rest of europe..I'll check this one anyway
Regarding the price I have checked the offert on ebay and I can get it for about 220 euro that are not 220 us dollar, this is a good offert for me also thank to the good exchange ratio...

As far as i know only North america, and possibly some of south america will be using AWS in the future

Remember to check that it is SIM unlocked, because you'll probably have a hell of a time getting an unlock code from TMO US if you're not a customer
yea I knoe but before that I have to knoe if the it can work on Italian UMTS...it's useless to have a great phone that I can use to call people !!
I suppose that i can considering that 2 user here, one from spain and one from holland, said that they use it ...regarding the unlock I 'll sure go for one that is already unlocked but also if all go bad and it arrives locked I think that is it possibile to unlock without the code from t-mobile...also because t-mobile will never give me a code from the moment that I'm not their customer !
Yes I can confirm that T-Mobile HD2 works perfectly on 3G in Europe: I bought mine while I was in US and then I moved to Switzerland. I now have a Sunrise simcard and my HD2 works on 3G, HSPD, HSPA+ and what not. Its radio indeed works in both 2100/1700 mode AND in 2100 alone mode. It was even stated in a specs sheet on T-Mobile or HTC website (I don't have the link now but it is easy to find) that it works in both 3G modes.

I can confirm -- I traveled in Europe this past summer with my unlocked US HD2 and got 3G in the UK and Germany using local SIM cards (T-Mobile in the UK and Plus in Germany).
this is good ..so I just need to find a good offert on ebay now !
