Can too many Contacts slow down HTC Sense? - HD2 General

I can't find any information on any threads regarding this, but I have tried several different ROMs, and everything is perfectly speedy until I synch up my Contacts list via Exchange ActiveSync. I've tried deselecting JUST my contact synchronization and everything seems to load just fine after that. Does anyone else know of any recommended limits for Contact lists? (I have a little over 300 contacts...)

I have more than 300 contacts, and no slow down after sync...
Loading contact list take less than one sec...

457 contacts here, no issues whatsoever, takes a while to sync to exchange 2010 though if only on GPRS

Have you tried the latest update. It is a radio rom (2.06.51.07) but the description says it has fixes for contacts. Here: http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=297&cat=0&dl_id=839

I have 500+ contacts.
No issues.
But, the peoples tab in manila slows sense a bit.

I have 2200+ contacts and 2500+ Calendar items but sensed no slow-down on my HD2.

Same here: I can open a "Favorite" contact quickly but it takes forever to go back to the screen with all of the "Favorites" and with forever I mean like 7/10 secs.

From my last restore .... I got about 3,334 contacts in my phone.
Didn't experience any slow down.

you guys are scary manzzz..2k contacts??? salute guys....i only have 250

I have only 150 contacts, but compared to other solutions like Resco Phone Contact or standard wm application HTC Contacts seems to be slow in general.
For sure, thousands of contacts may slow down every software, but this piece og software is never really smooth. Scrolling is a little bit choppy, switching between the different views always takes a while.
I don't think we ca change that behavior.
Sebastian

I have the same issues - happy to hear that I am not alone.
I am syncing my contacts with Lotus Traveler.
On the stock german rom 1.48 I did not had this issue
I did not had on Anja_31 rom from 1.1.2010 (but with this rom I had battery problems)
I had it with Mitris 1.1
Dutys v1, V3a
Now I am on Anja_31 from 15.1.2010 and the effect is the same again.
Mayb some of the tweaks are causing this dealy, that Sense is "looking" for something.
Mayv also some with the file system.
But the problem is I have absolutly no clue about rom cooking and the potential tweaks which could interfear in this area.

Thanks everyone. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy. It looks like my problems are actually related to my storage card and Manila version... Trying a new ROM now..

Unfortunatly not in my case.
Contacts are on internal storage and I have now Duty´s WWE V1.1 rom with Manila 1921, but with some "new Versions from 2.02"
To me int looks like that htc-contact is building up during each opening of a contact a index or cache or what so ever and is not storing this information for the future.
Or it has to do with some tweaks of the roms.
My contact list is not so large (maybe 120-150 contacts) but each contact is filled with all the adress details and not just a phone number, I am using also using "Groups".
Please report if you have a good result with a new rom.
Best regards,

I have reverted back to the default 1.48 ROM. It is the only one that I have found to be stable and quick.

Hey just to let you know that the latest Dutty rom WWE multi lang V 1.5 solved my problem!!!

Hi
Same here.. I have test like 5 diferents custom rom.. I have only 400 contacts... slowwwwww. But with the stock rom is fast!
Any more news??
thanks

Damn you guys are popular!! over 4/5 hundred of contacts? yikes i only have abt 100 i think hahaha

Same problem here, I have my Leo from 2 weeks, without any kind of updates (everything is stock so far), I have about 200 contacts (about 50 of them with image thumbnail 256x256px) and it is sooooooooooooo sloooooooooooow ...
... seems I have to try some updates you mentioned already

HTC Sense slow in loading or boot up
I have a few thousands of appointments, contacts, and multiple email accounts set up.
I was very frustrated about the very slow bootup (more than 5 minutes at most time) before everything is loaded and Sense works normally after that.
After much troubleshooting, I've confirmed that the Email accounts on the SD card is the cause. After deleting all emails in my Yahoo! and 2 Gmail accounts, the startup time reduced to less than 1 minute most of the time. I guess that Sense somewhat tries to load the emails!! Or possibly the SD card is slow (only rated 2x speed).
Hope this helps others who are frustrated over the same issue.

Since moving to WM6.5 ROM's (initially Miri's REV7, 7.1 and now Dutty's Leo R2) I noticed that any Contacts added to the TF3D Favourite Contact screen have lost data - specifically the free-format "details" field now contain just;
{\pwi<FDMID>9830431</FDMID>
The correct "details" were defo there prior to my re-flash this morning (from REV7.1 to R2) because I updated them yesterday. Fortunately I have an archive of my Contacts within Outlook so I can restore the data, but what a PITA.
I haven't used any restore utilities other than ActiveStink.
Has anyone else noticed this ?
Or even better, figured out why it happens ? and how to fix ?
PS: I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to raise this but as I've only noticed it since moving to WM6.5 ROM's, so I figure it's as good a place as any to discuss the issue.

I have noticed the same thing... I guess the strange data is entered by TF3D to store info relating to the "favorite"-status of that contact. Not sure, if there is any way to avoid that - although it definitely sucks if you don't know about it beforehand! Glad you had a backup!

Same here, I initially thought it was related to a Facebook link (you can tie a contact entry to a facebook entry WM6.5 (or HTC added this).
However, upon further investigation, it's linked to the favourites entries in Manila. This a terrible way to handle an extra field. I could like with them ADDING the pseudo tag to the Notes field, but not replacing the Notes field (thus erasing any genuine notes added by the user)
Not happy about this at all, since many of us use the Notes field extensively.

It is annoying that for the favorites contacts in the TF3D Favorite Contact screen have lost data, in the "details" field, where notes and such are kept.

Well known issue and complete screw up by HTC.
We 'think' it's related to HTC indexing your contacts so it can link them to Facebook and to the Manila shortcuts.
I would not have minded if they just 'added' this tag, but to replace the notes is dangerous and unforgivable (some of us have real data in there, and could lose it)
I had this problem too... Luckily i had some back ups
Issue resolve in latest Manila
Over the weekend I updated my ROM to Duttys LEO R6 (Manila 2.5.1920) and find that this Contact "Note" bug is no longer an issue
At first glance it seems that Manila is now using a new Contact Group called "HTC Favorite" to identify contacts on their favourites tab.
So folks, get our those Contact archives and start restoring your missing contact Notes.
However it's not perfect because if you have the same contact on both the favourties and home tabs then the contact is allocated into the "HTC Favourite" group twice - a minor acceptable buggette
What's wrong with ActiveSync?

If it is any help, it happened to me, but for the facebook linking mine got appended to the notes section, and still does this now. Not sure on teh favourites as had no notes on any of my favorites.
After careful consideration I've decided to move this thread to general discussion as its more of a backup issue when going between different versions of wm
it certainly isn't a backup issue...
bloody HTC, since I use Exchange, thus have my contacts on my phone and in my e-mail, I thought not to backup those... guess I was wrong
Lost alot of notes now ((
I also see the HTC favorites group (prob. because I changed Roms)
(btw, this happened on my HD2, so it's not a general HD topic)
I am experiencing this problem too on my HD2. Previous Touch HD did not suffer from this. Any fix discovered?
Furthermore, I have double-byte characters (Chinese) corrupted and became question marks in the Notes field beyond just pending the <FDMID>9830431</FDMID> string to the Notes field. In other instances, the string becomes <FDMID>9895967</FDMID><sn></sn>
Very frustrated by this data corruption!
hi the same thing happended to me using an omnia pro b7610 after installing Pocket Informant 9. the worst thing is that by the time I figured out about it I had already synced with MYPHONE so I mess all my contacts with notes
Reported the HD2 Notes data corruption to the HTC Support Centre. They acknowledged that it was a problem as they could reproduce it. Now waiting for a response and hopefully a fix?!
In the 2.5.2012XXXX version of HTC Sense, the way the data is stored in the notes field has changed from <FDMID>9895967</FDMID><sn>id:000000000/friendof:000000000</sn> to the following :
<HTCData><!-- Please do not modify -->
<Facebook>id:000000000/friendof:000000000</Facebook>
<Favorite>actionid:CallMobile</Favorite>
</HTCData>
And they use the HTC Favorite catagory for each contact add to the Quick Links.
I'm very sure it also adds the info to the notes field below any data that is already there.

[Cab] Leo SMS Fix for HD (new fix cab added)

Hi all,
I made a cab from the 2009-12-15 Leo SMS fix (http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=812&news_id=407), so this can be installed on other devices with Sense 2.5..
I'm on a sense 2.1 rom currently, so can't test it...So be careful, it might break ur SMS function, test with your own risk and always backup (I guess the new 2.02 package has the update already or even a better fix)..
happy new year!!

i'm not sure what it fixes... but it doesn't seem to fix the annoying slow messaging thingy... I was just coverting the .exe which can only be installed on HD2 to a cab that can be installed on every device..
I have heard that the htc messaging in the 2.02 pack is fast, anyone tried it?
what is your point in creating a thread with a cab entitled "sms fix" and you are
not sure what it does? shouldn't you have tested it first and shared to us what
exactly it can help?
no offense, but i agree with jigners... hopefully the OP has had time to test it by now!

Am I the only one in this thread that uses the actual HTC site? or do people just like to hijack threads and flame people who are doing what they can to help the community... As I remember no one else knew what the Leo Camera Fix did either, but it proved useful, at least for some.

Looks to me like HTC don't really say what the fix "fixes" but THANKS for creating the CAB, i'll have a look and see what it effects if anything. If it's worth it I'll cook it in for my next flash
Okay, have just installed the CAB.
So far no noticable difference when sending / recieving SMS.
I'm using my own custom ROM, using WinMo 6.5 28014, and most of the packages from Leo 1.48.
Thanks again for the CAB anyway.

When the fix first came out, I tried it but it won't install on hd. and now I learned how to create the cab, so I just made it. I need to have my phone switched on all day right now and I'm with a sense 2.1 ROM, so can't test it, but I thought someone with a lower leo build may want to try it...
yes, you are right..sorry for let you down.. I won't do it next time.

I sort of think the 2 posts directly above your post answers that question don't they
thanks, I could read those, but I'd like a bit more of an explanation:
you installed the fix and restored tons of sms, what I'd like to know is this:
- adding a contact with a lot of sms history to favourites slows down the phone ?
- opening such contact slows down everything ?
- I understand there is no sms history shown in the manila contact at all ? actually that point isn't very clear to me. where is that the original message is not shown ?
what I'd like to know, if you have got time to explain it to me, is what actually the fix changes, and how fast it makes opening sms history on a contact.
One last minor point is that a big sms history had most sms cut to one or two lines.
Regards
Andy

Tonearm,
Do you want to list what your problems are? Is it slow and buggy from rom installation or after you have loaded it up with shedloads of texts and apps?
I have been using 1.48 from day 1, absolutely no problems at all, at least not of the "slow and buggy" kind.

No, seriously. Original HTC firmware. Fresh install.
Syncing calendar and contacts via Active Sync. Downloading mails from 2 accounts (each about 1000 mails).
I swear, that my TouchPro2 was quicker in relation to the processor!
When will 1.60 or higher come?
Mine came with 1.48 installed, no problems for me either.

I agree with the other posters mate - I'm on 1.48 and it's neither slow nor buggy.
Incidentally, downloading mails has nothing to do with the processor. That's purely down to your connection speed. Have you tried doing it over wifi?

Of course over Wifi.
Speed isn´t my only concern as you could read.
I´m disapointed with the progress of the firmware.
Everywhere you can read about the bugs of the device and there are dozens of cooked firmwares.
Afaik HTC offered the new 1.60 firmware in a few countries inofficially, but not in germany.
When will the progress go on with optimizing the software of the device?

HTC have never offered the 1.60 ROM to anyone - it's been "leaked".
I only mentioned the speed issues because you gave that as an example of what your problems are.
If you can actually explain your problems then we can probably help with some of them. Alternatively, search for each of the individual problems and you'll find answers for some of them on here.
Incidentally, the majority of people have only minor issues, so if you have more than your fair share of problems then you're basically one of the unlucky people. There is a LOT of help to be had on this site, but you need to be clear as to what you need help with.
The 1.60 ROM will probably not solve your problems, especially if you can't tell people what they are!

There's a thread on this started by Beards in the LEO thread. Implement the solution in there.
Second. Camera flashlight shoots photos with blue faces.
Another separate thread on this in LEO (can't remember what its called. There are 2 solutions on offer; one is to use an app called TorchButton, the other is to set the flash on manually, get the camera to set itself, take your shot, turn the flash off. I usee this latter solution, takes me seconds. Just another way of taking a shot, same as you can find different ways of taking a shot with a true dedicated camera.
Third. Overall performance. As soon something is working on the device it´s a little stuttery.
Aha, you definitely NEED to read the Hints & Tips thread on here as there are numerous solutions there. Strikes me you have too many apps running in the background, not being closed off properly, plus you might re running out of memory as well.
Also if you are getting stuttery performance when watching videos you might want to install Chainfire's solution

Why should I install other roms?

Hi everyone
I finally changed my phone to htc hd 2 after being hooked to iphone for 3,5 years and frankly, I'am pretty happy with my choice
But i really can't get some thing straigt, why do people change their original rom's giving by the manufacturer to the custom ones made by those genius developers?
Is Manila the name of the rom made by the developer? And isn't sense the real name of the firmware?
Where can I purchase a ebook reader to windows mobile 6.5?
And finally is there a quicker way to connect my contacts to their facebook profile then to do it individually?
Thank you for taking the time to read the post and thanks for all the help that may come.
Sincerely
Alan
Hi,
I can help you as to why you would upgrade the roms, simply because the phone has lots of stuff on it you wont use and if its not there then the phone works faster and better, also the roms may have other utilities built into it that are very handy that do not come with stock...personally its also taste as well...roms are made in the 'kitchen' and the people that put them together are called 'chefs' they are all different and i am finding that out myself...as for the other questions...cant help you there........YET.

once you have done it once, so long as you backup your contacts you don;t need to do it again.
Their facebook info is held in each contacts 'notes' field. So long as that gets synchronised when you backup/restore, facebook associations will still be there as soon as you log in to facebook from the phone.

Manila and Sense are both names for a user interface built by HTC to sit on top of WM and iron out some of the wrinkles.
Latest versions of WM6.5.5 have a reader tab built into Sense but there are a number of other options out there. I believe Freda is a free reader? You should find it via Google.
Whilst I appreciate that your question in the thread title is hypothetical, I would suggest that the direct answer for now is 'you shouldn't'. Get used to the phone, do a lot of reading here, try out some of the tweaks and apps, and forget about ROM upgrades until you know the phone and the operating system better - may save a bit of heartache in the short term to fight any initial temptation!
originally i flashed mine to get rid of all the telstra lock downs imposed on the phone and remove all the foxtel and bigpond junk, but as a byproduct of flashing my phone is now faster, has longer battery life, is much prettier, has loads of customizing tools and upgraded browsers, and can perform many more functions.
in the all contacts section the events tab auto detects possible matching facebook and local contacts, where you can attach them with 1 click, i find the manual way much better in the long run however.
i am experienced with flashing other devices though and i would recommend a lot of reading first before attempting it, and never flash with the sd card as it will end painfully.
Best ereader in my opinion is allreader:

Does it break the warranty to flash it?
And do you know of a rom that would allow me to write in Russian/English and preferably also Norwegian? Thank you!
Linking contacts to Facebook
To automatically link all your contact to their Facebook profiles:
1. Go to 'All people' in the contact tab.
2. Slide across to 'Updates and Events'.
3. All the profiles that match up (by name) will appear below your profile at the top. This will take a while if there are loads.
4. Select this, check they all are right and click done.
Also you have to put HSPL on your phone to install a cooked (or any other) ROM which will invalidate your warranty. Although it can be uninstalled to send it back if necessary. (Read all about it in the sticky HSPL thread in ROMs and development).
Hope this helps.

Menu Button in People Screen incredibly slow

Hi all,
when I go to the People Screen and click on the Menu button (the one to go to Company directory/New Contact/Delete Contacts ...) it takes at least 10 seconds to open the menu.
Right now I'm using Artemis 11 but I already tried with other ROMs.
Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Weave

i was replying to the quote, didn't realize you weren't the one who posted it. What is Company Directory mine is grayed out
Hi,
Company Directory is available when you're using Exchange.
I don't know how many contacts I have right now, but it's less then 200.
I tried to delete a few from the internal and deleted all from the SIM but it doesn't change anything.
@iosub & wardh
Are you using exchange as well?
Thanks,
Weave
hmm i wonder possibly if you are closing programs, this can hog up memory in phone. By defualy when pressing X or OK minimizes the program use a task manager program or the default to close programs. Try a soft reset and make the first thing you do view contacts and access the menu. also you can disable unnecessary startup items like voice command. Background applications that use data may help also such as twitter setting them to manual might help. ill keep doing some searches to see what else could be contributing what ROM are you currently using and what version HD2 do you have(Euro or TMOUS)?
hi..
yes using exchange .. I think i have found the problem.
try this:
go to exchange sync options and set to sync just the contacts.
you will see that the people tab is fast !
the problem is that if a contact has a email address and you open the contact you can see that the are several tabs on the contact info page. one of is email. manila is doing a loop for the emails each time you open a contact! witch slow down the people tabs.
we need help from some one for removing the email tab of the contact info... or some way that manila only loops when we select the email tab .
hi
anyone else having the same problem ?
thanks
