G1 Physical Keyboard - Inputs random keys - G1 General

I have a G1, running Cyanogenmod (latest build). Whenever i use the physical keyboard it sometimes will randomly input strings of characters. The most common is "/ ~z{"
I first thought this was a software issue, i began by uninstalling all my apps.. Issue was still present.
I then did a factory reset back to Cyanogenmod, issue is still there.
I then booted into the console in the recovery and guess what?! The issue is still there even in console..
Anyone else have this issue? Is it hardware related or software? Its very annoying, I have a new G1 coming from tmobile as warranty but i'd like to know what causes this issue.

Hardware. If you are comfortable you could disassemble it and clean it.
The most common button to go, reading xda, would be the space 'bar'.

Thanks, i wanted to confirm this. The unit is under warranty from tmobile still so im getting a free exchange anyways.
What is the easiest way to get my current rom app's, and settings over to my new G1?

Backup for root users probably.

keyboard button problem (not symbols)

I was wondering if anyone else is having problems with individual keys wearing out on the 6800. Three of my keys have become a little difficult to use. When I press them they act as if they have not been pressed. I have to press the many times before they will work.
I've tried googling but the only problem people seem to be having is the "symbol problem". My problem is different from this - it is a mechanical problem. The phone is only 6 months old and I use it regularly but not excessively.
I'm thought about taking the phone apart to see if there is anything that I can do.
I have the exact same issue, mostly with the space bar... some keys would take pushing it several before it works or sometimes I would press the key once and I get two letters, for example if I press E once I get EE.
Let me know if you find a solution for this, it's extremely annoying.
sounds like normal wear and tear to me. if you use a button alot, eventually its going to start working less efficiently than it used to. there are a bunch of good (free) full screen keyboards that you can use to give your keyboard a rest. taking apart your phone is a really bad idea. if you've only had it for 6 months, its still under 1 yr manufacturer warranty. send it in and get a new one.
thanks so much for the quick response, this might be a stupid question, but how do I exchange my phone? It's a Sprint Mogul.
probably the most direct way is to head into a Sprint store. and try your best to talk to them like you know what youre talking about, so they dont try to jerk you around. when i was using the xv6700, i got 9.. yes 9 replacement phones on my manufacturers warranty. if there is nothing to show that YOU have damaged the keys, they have to replace the phone for you.
try this, it fixed my key misses and repeats, but i have to hit the keys a bit harder.
Unfortunately, 'titan_key.cab' does not fix my problem

Thanks for the file...unfortunately, the problem persists on my Mogul.
Has anyone found a solution that makes the hardware keyboard perform as it did BEFORE the last official ROM upgrade was released into the wild. Installation of that [allegedly] tested and approved HTC/Sprint file coincided with my beginning to experience my KB problems.
HELP?!

Titan Keyboard failing

some keys i have to press super hard, other keys i tap and it types the key like 3 times
like when i press a
it types
aaa
and im like wha?
i am still under warranty, should i just put original stock rom back on and ask them to repair it or try and get it switched out for a vogue 0.o
I have a similar problem on my device. Is this a known problem?
Ditto here, the Function key has to be pressed hard, and some keys in the first row are acting up as well, but primarily the Q key.
I'm not sure that this has been officially acknowledged by HTC or any providers but it seems to be a widespread issue for end users.
While the "hard presses" for Function, Q and P seem to be a physical problem many users have reported that using the following CAB fixes the duplicate entries.
The CAB is being provided by UTStarcom and be downloaded at the below page.

This is deff a problem. My phone does the exact same thing as OP.
I press a and it types it three times. This is the only key that this happens on.
I didn't realize how bad the keyboard was degrading until yesterday, when my Mogul was replaced. For me, the ./0, y/1 and function key were the worst offenders. The unit was swapped because the usb port broke. The port failed because it's a really cheap design, 2 pins broke off . The rep in the repair center insinuated that it was a really common issue, she didn't even look at the port when I explained the problem. On the plus side,I got rid of the dreaded white spot and my keyboard works well again, but for how long? The keyboard, screen and usb port problems are all common complaints on this board and others. What I surmise from this is that HTC makes a pretty crappy product! When this phone is retired in a year or so, I'm hopeful that I'll be able to replace it with a non HTC/non Windows Mobile (or whatever MS calls it next). Every time I use my phone, I wonder if it be wonderfully helpful tool this time, or a frustrating pain in the ass? Unfortunately, the later happens all too often!

These cabs dont necessarily fix the hardware keyboard issues. It fixes the old issues of the function button always being on in certain applications.
The issues that people are having is just wear and tear. The XV6800 has a cheap build.
hi guys,
same here, when i type "a" either doesnt do anything or it gives me a duplicate of 3 a's. and that started happening since i upgraded to dcd 3.2.0 an on.
also when i switch to landscape mode it sometimes writes an H or Y or P. don't know if it is OS related or hardware but it is a brand new phone and i never recall having this before going to dcds greatest 3.2.X.
edit: also i've been using quickmenu ever since 3.2.0 because of the x-button issue so i was thinking is any of you using quickmenu too?
fn key problem
So I guess many people have this "hard press fn key" issue. Annoys me a lot, especially with password sites where I cannot see the entry. Would this justify replacement from spring, i have full insurance?

I don't really think it's a hardware degradation issue. This is because there is no gradual degradation. If it were I would think just a few keys would start acting this way and then eventually a bunch of them would. With me I just all of a sudden noticed one day that all my keys were acting wonky. I think it was after a ROM flash but I can't recall any specific one that broke it (I change the ROM more often than I use my keyboard I think haha).
The CAB seems to help a little. I still have to take more care in typing than I used to but it's better than having so many repetitions of the same key.

I still say it's a hardware thing. Because if it was the software / ROM you would just be able to hard reset and your keyboard would be back to the state it was before.
My keyboard has issues with the E,O,H,Function Key, Space Bar, and the L.
It's something we will have to live with or just return our phones for a new one and wait for that one to wear out.
Just like the spots on the screen, loose stylus and so on. The 6800 was a bad build for HTC.
I Did Not Typs0r That! I Did Not Typs0r That!
ya well. it is definitely hardware. spoke to 4 co-workers with same company issued phone. one of them still has the stock rom on it, lol.. anyway
all now reporting this same issue.
i mean i was able to use my keyboard 2 months ago, and now i can't at all. its like i have a fat vogue minus 64 megs of ram. i mean i really got used to just using the on screen one.
i gotta figure out how to get stock rom back on so i can bring it to verizon and demand... satisfaction! only prob is nochem said something about it bricking your phone after putting radio 3.39 on it

Hmmm.... anyone go back to an older rom to see if this resolves it. if it does, i must throw away everything i know about electronics.
My gift to the WORLD!
keyboard fixed.
wow it was the software.
i built a rom without the htc diamond keyboard and it works fine now.
wtf? but im happy, keyboard is working normally
hummm... I have problems with the "Q" and the left softkey, I have to press them hard...
keyboard failing on Telus P4000
I got the same problem with my Telus P4000..
I think this is how I ran into this problem ...
I had radio 3.39 and dcd 3.1.2 at the time ...
I then decided to upgrade to radio 3.42.30 and another OS ROM (version I dont quite recall.)
That is when I ran into this issue with the keyboard.
So I went back to dcd 3.1.2 (kept 3.42.30 radio)
Same problem.
So i decided to revert back to stock ROM on TELUS (2.13) and radio 1.32
Still having this issue... I hope I do not have to bring in my phone to have it repaired. It will be the second time I bring it in
Flashed yesterday to DCD3.2.3 which uses the same keyboard driver as 2.1.4 (according to the changelog).
My keyboard was wonky as hell before this flash unless I installed the fix and even with the fix it would sometimes mess up. With the new ROM (and old driver) my keyboard works almost flawlessly without the fix installed.
Still everyone thinks it's hardware-related but it definitely showed up all of a sudden with a flash months ago and it disappeared just as quickly (for me anyway).
If you have keyboard issues maybe try the new ROM and see if you have a successful fix like I did.
definitely software, i should make a youtube vid to show it.
loaded up the stock rom to bring back to verizon to return saying keyboard was all quirky and i was standing there and everything was fine. im like what the hell?
what the hell brah?
ok so here is the instructions that fixed it for me:
restored stock rom
tested keyboard to see it working fine
flash it with the newer roms with radio 3.39
everything seems fine.
i can't explain it but it works.

Ok... after I went back to TELUS stock, i then proceeded to flash up to dcd's latest at the time: 3.2.3 with 3.42.30 radio. Keyboard issue was still there ... So.. where to go from here right ...
Well, I recalled that I began having this issue not long after flashing 3.42.30 RADIO i think it was initially. If i recall correctly, it was not immediate. I left to go camping for 4 days and my battery died .. So I left the phone off for most of those 4 days. When I got back from camping, that is where the keyboard issue began. Note: It did not get wet, but it obviously gets damp at night. My thought: phone off for extended amount of time in damp environment, somehow affected the keyboard. I don't know how, maybe some sort of rusting of sorts due to the hot/cold/humid fluctuations inside the tent (estimated environmental fluctuations>15-30 celsius with 60-90%RH). Reason I say this is the following:
I decided to pass my fingers accross the keyboard on every buttoms back and forth with a decent amount of force. Idea being that I could maybe create enough friction or force to disrupt whatever is causing the issue under my keyboard .. I did that for a bit. And my keyboard is working better. Not perfect, but I would say 90%. I barely notice it now ..
Thanks for bringing this thread up. I have beeen getting a few missed keys, and in particular, the Fn key has been flaky. Either not working or double pressing so the Fn light comes on and locks.
So, when I heard others having the same issue, a short while back I sprayed the keyboard with contact cleaner. All better now. Now the typing mistakes are all my fault, not the keyboard.
If you try this, use a plastic safe cleaner. I used Caig Pro Gold.

Screen Issues

Having some random and annoying screen fluctuations. Its like the screen depolarizes and the images become distorted and somewhat inverted. Happens off and on and reboots do not help. Im gonna go back to stock just incase it needs to be sent in and to see if the ROM I am using is completely to blame, I have tried reflashing too.
Just thought I put this out there to see if anyone else is having similar issues.
I may have had something similar the other day - basically the color blue would go away, and the remaining R&G pixels would smear. Best way to describe it would be to pretend that there is a specific frame buffer for blue, and it has a pointer, and that pointer was getting whacked. Meanwhile the pointers for the red and green buffers were having less-significant bits screwed with. Yeah, like I said, "pretend". My initial gut said it was a simple case of some bad silicon on a line driver. Done.
While getting ready to exchange the Tab (aka removing stuff), I discovered the behavior was strongly impacted by memory pressure. If you've played with ESXi, you know what I'm referring to. If not, go read about Ballooning.
With lots of crap floating around, screen gets more wonky more often to the point of being unusable. Including during the boot splash screen. Remove the junk (not programs - just... stuff, music, browser cache, whatever)... less wonky, less often. Still wonky, mind you, but less wonky, and less often.
Decided the culprit was likely Task Manager by Rhythm Software. Removed exactly it, cold started, and never had an issue since. Note that I'm not really keen on saying Rhythm's work was at fault, especially since saying "it's fixed!" is trying to prove a negative and this is not a reported problem. OTOH, the behavior did start within a few days of installing it, and the behavior's ending exactly coincides with RTM's removal.
In that sense, take a close look at what you're installing - something otherwise fine might be suffering an... unexpected feature.

Thanks for the tip, mines still looking like hardware failure. Sometimes when i put it into the samsung keyboard dock it randomly clears up, as if the jiggle in the pin connector port affects it but it will reappear eventually.
Been trying to use the return to stock stuff from the main sticky in the development section but it keeps erroring and failing in CWM when I attempt to flash. Oh well.
Thanks for the reply yo!
I think its because the stock rom they have is p700 and I am p7510 or whatever. Am I in the wrong place? lol Time to scavenge the forums.
Unroot for Return
So, I made my backup copy of my ROM after it was rooted. How do I get this thing rooted again so I can take her in? I tried using the info on the stickie in the Dev section but I get an error when flashing the supplied stock ROM, repeated, no mistakes I am pretty sure.
Any tips?
also, hasnt been 30days, should I just go back to best buy or call samsung?
I have the exact same issue with my tablet and going to return it for warranty. I had to unroot and get it back to default blind, since the screen is almost never readable here (too much distortions).
I got it back to factory default (unrooted) through ODIN + Download Mode. Use the files and step-by-step guide on this webpage: http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2011/06/samsung-galaxy-tab-101v-p7100-stock-rom.html
I got the same problem. the screen just distorted, which happens on several custom ROM. It happens after heavy use. I have to put it aside for a couple of hours to get it back to normal.
Is that hardware issue? If it is, how could you convince the shop to get it replaced?
you may not be able to reproduce it at the shop.
I lost my interest to samsung product. It took quite some time to create an account and file a case. Now the webpage just keeps telling that it is processing the data.
I remember that I have never succeed to create an account through the TAB.
very bad service.
Well, mine's finally going in for repair.
As mentioned in the post above... after removing a few apps and most of the data from the tab... not a single issue with the screen, since.
Then... the behavior came back last week, gradually becoming worse until the colors are just plain hosed. Blew out the browser caches, wiped any remaining data... pulse, etc... and it cleared back up again... for about an hour, but rapidly reverted back to horrid. Did a hard reset... no avail.
It is quite the interesting behavior, to say the very least.
It's not mechanical. It's not thermal.
Is samsung service center the only solution for this?
Does yours look like this?

My Tab also has similar issue and it still appears after hard reset, trying to convince the shop to exchange or help me to send back to Samsung.
Did Samsung cost you any charge for repairing? The shop say it need charges and they don't want give any help.
not really. Mine has distorted display but more likes adding white noise.

I was covered by seller warranty. I sent it back, and the seller sent me a new device. I don't know where you're at, but usually sellers are required to handle this for you, if under warranty, _by law_. This is obviously a manufacturing fault, not bad usage.

[Q] Help dealing with ghost typing

UPDATE:
It seems the problem I have is ghost typing. Based on FourPointedFreak suggestion, I activated the Show Touches option in the Developer Options menu, and now I see ghost presses on the touchscreen, always in the same place, about 1.5 inches from the bottom and 0.5 inches from the left. If I try pressing with my finger in the same spot when the mark shows up, it slides down before I can even get to the screen. If googled it, and it's been reported on some Android phones and ipads, but not on the S4, and there is no agreement if it is hardware or software.
If you've dealt with something like this before, even with a different device, your input would be most welcome. I'm planning to change ROM tomorrow or early next week, and see if the problem continues. And clean my screen with a soapy moist towel, so far I've only used a cloth for glasses to clean it.
I'm really hoping it's a software issue as I don't want to do a warranty replacement, I'd be most probably get a device on MF3. But if it is hardware I'd rather have that than a faulty device. I got it refurbished as a replacement for an Xperia Ion, and I only have one more month left of warranty.
Again, any input especially from past experiences would be greatly appreciated.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAST UPDATE:
It seems the problem is hardware, as the false inputs in the screen happen also in TWRP while trying to flash the new ROM. I guess any mod can close this thread now.
josemald said:
Hi everybody, in the last week I've had issues with the display. First it started like going up and down in scroll menus, like if I was scrolling up and down around a certain position very fast. In the last two days, after that happens, the touchscreen gets unresponsive (it didn't use to happen before), including the menu and back buttons, only the hardware buttons work. Home screen button works fine, but I can't do anything in the screen. The only solution is to turn the screen off, enter PIN, and then it starts working. A couple of times the screen keyboard started acting weird when I was typing, for example if I wanted to move the cursor in an email the keyboard interpreted as if I was pressing a key, which was way below. Again turning the screen off and on solved it.
I'm using Mint Jelly ROM, which has been stable for almost two months. I recently updated the modem to MF3, but only the modem and not the firmware. The screen issues were happening before that, it just got worse today. I also tried freezing Samsung WatchOn, which started acting out by showing itself on the notification panel even though I had selected the option for it to not appear, and I uninstalled the Software Update app (used for OTA updates) using Titanium Pro, since I saw it in the list of running processes. The problem still continues.
Is it possible that this is a hardware issue? I have 1 more month of the warranty (I got it as a warranty replacement for a Sony Xperia, so it wasn't new). If I don't need to send it back I would prefer not to, since the one I'd get would probably come locked with MF3 firmware. If you have any ideas on how to debug this, I would appreciate the input. I haven't installed any new app recently.

Well, you're definitely smart for doing your research before just pulling the warranty card.
I would do some testing and research with the phone to figure out what the cause is. It doesn't sound like something that can be just 'debugged'.
Go into your developer options on the phone and enable a few things.
To get developer options, go to System Settings > More > About Device and tap on "Build Number" until it says you've enabled it.
Then go into Developer Options (Above About Device) and under input, select both options "Show Touches" and "Show Pointer Location". Then under Monitoring, enable "Enable Traces" for anything applicable to what you're having problems with.
Some of these settings may be annoying, but continue to use the phone as you would. See if it's adding and doing things you're not, this would show clear signs of a malfunction with the firmware. Check for dead pixels too. Sometimes a dead pixel can cause things like you're dealing with. Where something is selected on the screen much lower than where you pressed and variations of that.
Also, have you tried reflashing your ROM to see if that makes a difference?

Thanks for the suggestions!
Do you think it´s possible that the problem was caused by a dirty screen? I know it sounds a bit insane, but yesterday I wiped off my screen to clear dust and smudges, and since that I haven´t had any issues with the phone. This is the third touch screen device I had, I've never seen something like this, but also the S4 screen is a lot more sensitive than my previous devices. Could it be that too much dust and grease made the phone interpret that there was some input?

I would think it's 'possible' but it would have to be thick and really caked on there to make a difference. That may have just been a coincidence of timing with your issue. But perhaps it is.
Maybe go buy a cheap screen protector to help with finger prints and dirt and see if it gets better?
If it persists, I would factory wipe and install the stock ROM through Odin. Use it a bit completely stock and see if the screen works. If the issue continues then its an hardware problem and i would take a video and e-mail Samsung about it with the video. I've actually had this problem before and that's because my phone was cold as hell. Doing a lot of benchmarks so i put it in the freezer (I would NOT recommend that) and my screen started acting up and it pressed random things like yours.

That's a good idea. Just make sure you flash the custom ROM appropriately as not to brick your device.

Yeah, I have heard the term "ghost typing" before. I couldn't seem to find much information or help on the subject as I'm sure you noticed as well. To me, and many others on the internet - this doesn't seem software related to me. This would seemingly be an issue with the hardware. Maybe the screen itself, the data connectors for the screen's signals - could be all kinds of things.
If I were in your shoes and you really like the S4, i'd just take advantage of the month you have left on your warranty and get a new device. If, and they probably will, they supply you with a new(er) device with MF3 on it, it's not the end of the world. Mine got stuck with it - there are methods to root it even still.
To me, cleaning it just doesn't sound like it's a solution. I've worked for T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. Only twice had I seen an issue like this where you can attempt to press "E" and another key was hit in place of "E". We never found a fix - this occurred on demo phones so we related the issue to it having demo software.
The only other 'solution' or fix would be to replace to screen to see if it fixes. But since you have a warranty, for the trouble - i'd just get a new device.

Thanks, that's what I'm going to do. It must be hardware related, since the problem also came while I was in TWRP after formatting the phone. I like the S4 but a locked down Android, not so much. If rooting is enough to be able to tether, I might ask for another S4, if not, might as well try to migrate to Windows Phone. It's ridiculous that we have to pay extra just to be able to use our limited data plans to navigate through a different device.
Again, thanks for your help!

No problem - yeah there is definitely a way to root the MF3 build of the S4.
Since you mentioned it, my only note ***If apps are important to you, Windows Phone is a dangerous field. Many apps available for Android and iOS are not available on Windows Phone. I'd make sure the content you want is available before switching.
I can see why the carriers would charge additionally for tethering. If you can make an extra buck, do it. But it does suck. Especially when you have unlimited data and want to tether.
-Do some research on Windows Phone in case you're seriously considering switching. I wouldn't though

[q] no screen touches being recognized!!!

Hey XDA, Really need some help here, i'll bullet point my problem for ease of reading:
- 1st Nexus 4 bought from google had wi-fi issues so got replacement
- 2nd replacement nexus 4 was good for about 2 weeks
- randomly screen touches weren't recognized by phone so reboot fixed that
- got worse and more frequent
- now my phone does not recognize screen touches at all
- phone is completely unusable, power volume buttons work though.
- need to ask XDA before another replacement ///
WHAT I'VE TRIED:
- i was on stock, so i tried to reflash stock to get rid of gravity stock and stock kernel
- rebooting phone 3950280359283 times.
- cleared caches.
- asked google play support, they're clueless.
- problem was here before i was unrooted, on complete stock 4.4.2
- also wondering whether its a software or hardware problem. i assume hardware however.
- i still have warranty
ANY IDEAS?!? thanks.
Does a touch recovery recognize touches? If so, it could be a problem of your rom/kernel. Otherwise I think it's a hardware problem.

My screen works now. However it will still come back every now and then and is fixed by a reboot. When i made this thread it did not work for a whole day, so my device will probably breakdown again. When I use TWRP it does not recognize touches. A good decider. So i guess it is hardware?
I think so, but wait for another reply confirming that.
I'd say it's a hardware issue. Definitely get it replaced again.

Lmao. You're definitely right. It's really annoying they sent me another device with a WORSE problem. Gonna ask google for some sort of compensation. I don't really have time to fiddle with devices re-rooting them transferring all my data again and so on. Too much work.
