hello,
like a complete tool i forgot my phone was in my jeans and chucked them in the washing machine!
needless to say the phone was soaked and smelt like a fresh summer breeze!
the phone works, but the screen has water damage and it annoys me when i look at it....
does anyone know where i can get a service manual showing how to take the phone apart so I can replace the screen????
thanks,
Iain
hi,
Yes, there is an DIY that shows you how to take apart the Hero.. and take out the screen.
I saw it this week... but dont remember where I saw it or what forum.
I tried to find it, but could not...
You will have to so a full web search.. IT IS OUT THERE!
Sorry I could not be more helpful
http://pockethacks.com/htc-g1-disassembly/
maybe this helps, it is for g1. would be interested in a real tutorial also, you never know
http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1706 there you can find disassembly/assembly vids of the Hero...
On the first day i had my HERO it become acquainted with my cup of coffee!
Now it runs faster !
very handy
wow that really is a blow, anyway good luck

Well my 8525 appears to have a certain love for koi ponds or is a true samurai. I was taking some pictures at the Anderson Japanese Garden in Illinois and I take it out to txt a friend and it completely slips from my hand, flying close to 5ft towards the pond and in it goes. I took it out of the pond, took the battery and the sim card and dashed for the restrooms and put the hand drying blower on it until it dried.
I was thinking of letting it dry until tomorrow and try it out, but to be honest I don't have much hope, but I was still wondering if this has happened to anybody here and if there's anything I should try if it doesn't start or if I should do anything else before I start it up.
The thing is, just last night I stopped by my local AT&T store to ask about the Kaiser's release date. I was curious about the Kaiser although I wanted to hold out until maybe the next gen or something but I guess my phone got jealous and decided to commit suicide today.
I guess being in a japanese garden that was the closest to seppuku that my phone could do it itself to keep its honor.
Couldn't wait
Alright I couldn't wait and decided to give it a try. Everything works, I can even make phone calls, but the screen is white. I can barely make out traces of the image, but I can do everything, even browse the internet.
Any thoughts regarding how to fix the lcd? Don't want to open it up yet as it seems to be working, so I'll wait for some feedback. I can even post pictures if anybody wants to see what it looks like.
Look at my posts in this thread. Mine took a bath, got the white screen, but after while recovered and is now my backup (insurance) phone. It also hit the water a second time and recovered well. I really love this 8525. I suggest you open it up, take the battery and SIM card out, and leave it for a good week or so, then try it. Worked for me!

Holy **** I just read your posts, damn impressive!!! That phone is certainly a fighter!
Hi, I'm the proud owner of an ELF(in). I bought it on ebay very cheap because it was in bootloader mode. Thanks to the gold card method I've been using it with no problems at all.
Yesterday I bought another one (ELF), it hangs after 3-5 seconds of power on (bootloader, loading windows, etc). Sometimes the screen just shuts off, sometimes everyting becames green. So, I decided to put it in the refrigerator and see what happens. After 15 minutes I powered it up and it works! I take it out and hangs almost immediately. Is this just a faulty unit? No hope for it? (I don't want to carry my refrigerator everywhere).
If someone has any ideas, I'm listening.
Thanks!
hahaha, i love this post. sorry i'm not able to offer too much help but I had to comment. I know my parents used to freeze batteries to make em last longer. Tried a different one?
Well yeah, I tried soft reset, hard reset, the battery from my working Elfin, etc.
Try the microwave... for two minutes?
There already was a thread about this problem (maybe you bought it) and already then my answer was to take the device apart clean all the dust and dirt inside and give it another shot. I had a nokia with the same problem and when i opened it it was full with dust and fibres from my pants everytime whe put it in our pants there comes a bit of dirt in it and because of the rubbing it acumulates inside the device and it enters in protection-mode (nice word????) because of overheating ate least that was the explanation they gave me when i contacted nokia at the time.........You can't loose anything by trying

I already cleaned up, and still the same. It's clearly an overheating problem, it's been in the refrigerator for a couple of hours and works like a charm. Not very useful though as it's no longer a "portable device"!

Just buy one of those mini refrigerators... carry it around on your back (along with a VERY long extension cord) and have your Elfin inside. When you need a snack or need to call, the fridge is always there!

LOL!!!!! what do you can expect man???
Well, I hope you didn't pay much for it. You can always keep it handy for spare parts when you might need some. My first thought was that you might want to try using a different battery, but I see you already tried this.

Is there not a small watch size battery in these devices - Perhaps it needs replacing?
See picture I included at the bottom of the device. I got this picture from the complete disasembly guide in the elf forum.
I knew about people who used the refrigerator to overclock their PCs, but this thing you're doing is amazing!

I used a small box with ice when I connected it to the PC for rom updating, perhaps I should carry that box. I know it sounds bizarre but it works fine when refrigerated!

I disconnected that battery and it works just the same without it!
Any more ideas on how to fix this Elf?
try booting into windows and looking at the cpu speed, if it is normal lower it to the minimum and see if it hangs then.
eitherway, u must try reflashing everypiece of firmware, especially the radio firmware before giving up. (yeah, u might have to put ur laptop in the fridge with the phone )
Try lowering the clock speed with and Overclocking tool. Homescreen ++ gives u temp report. With that u can know if the temp is the real problem.
Liquid Nitrogen is the answer
Fix a fan on it
Haha, how about fixing a computer fan at the back of the pocket pc, it needs cooling.
Maybe the temperature sensor of the ppc has been spoilt, reporting the wrong data to the brain, thus the ppc restarts.
Ok, finally my Elf is working with no crashes at all outside the fridge! I found the solution in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=476152.
Thanks to Firestarter42 for the tip and okti for the mini-tutorial. I think that info should be in Elf's Wiki page.
However! I've got another problem... I've attached a screenshot. Any ideas?
A User just posted a site with OEM parts, and while scavenging through the site I also found a complete disassembly video so i thought i'd share!

Pretty neat thanks for sharing.

Now we know where all the replaced epic's go to when Assusirion gets their hands on then. So much for fixing them....

Really cool to see the things inside my phone! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, I've been looking for a teardown like this. Would have been nice to see the screen and capacitive buttons removed but I've heard it's quite difficult (according to a Sprint tech that worked on mine and ultimately sent for a replacement).
WOW! He makes it looks so easy! haha Still not for the faint of heart...
Nice find! Think it was me who found the site but didn't see this which is great as it will guide me into replacing the part I need. Thanx! Think this should be stickied as well as the site in case anyone need parts and video guide.
Pretty cool, thanks for sharing that.
Like I said to asj, this is also a great find. If I keep this phone nearly as long as I had my Vogue, I will definitely need this, as I pretty much rebuilt my vogue from the ground up because it was cheaper than getting a new one at the time (it's a long story how a family member stole my upgrade - another classic Sprint fu** up).
Taking apart phones and small electronics is frightening, but it can be a ton of fun. If you have an old phone lying around that you don't use I highly recommend taking a shot at dis- and reassembling it just for the experience. Make sure you have all the right tools before you get started and have an easy way to catalogue all of the pieces and keep them in order while you are doing the tear down.
Just don't do it on a phone that doesn't need it or that you do need!
I took mine apart last night. Not too bad. It took me about 20 mins to take apart and put back together. Still trying to find a way to tighten the slider? I will take the screen apart tonight to get the slider out of the rails. hopefully that will help.
Can they make a video on how to put it back together

Just do everything in reverse or start with the video guide at the end and work your way to the front

Shouldn't be to hard to take apart, as with working in a car is all about having the right tools and not taking short cuts. Since I was younger I always took stuff apart so it comes naturaly to me disassembing and assembing stuff.
Glad all of you found this helpful! If I find any more useful information I'll definitely post it up!

It's one of the reasons why I keep coming back here is to learn things about the Epic phone.
I think once 2.2 is finally released I may try out the custom ROMs.
I took mine apart hoping to find a way to fix the screen wobble but could not figure it out. When I lie down and have the phone facing me, keyboard closed, you can hear the tapping everytime I hit the screen. Really annoying.
If anyone finds a way please post it. Thnx.

So my girlfriend drooped my phone and broke it on me. Oh my beloved atrix what ever will I do without you. Everything about the phone is working just fine so I am curious if its just the touch panel that ia broken. I touch the screen and nothing happens I have fully charged it and turned it on and off several times. Do you guys think if I replace the touch panel that there is a chance it will work again. I didn't get insurance on it because I was very careful with it and took care of it like it was my child lol.
First of all I would like to point out that it is ok to admit that you dropped it, and not your gf.
Secondly I would suggest tearing it down and checking the connections. I have seen where the digitizer connector will be loose and wont be responsive on other phones. I have never taken apart the atrix, so I dont know if that is a unlikely thing for it or not.
In the unlikely event that it really was your gf who dropped it, you could always guilt her in to getting you a new phone
Lol I swear it was her we were at the bar last night and she was trying to show somone the gi Joe psa's. Ill try and tear it down have to find a walk through I guess. The real kick in the teeth is I just bought a e book and it was really starting to get good . As far as guilting her, her parent were with us and gave me a kindle fire because they felt bad but the things useless until they get android running well enough on it.
there is a teardown site, i am too lazy to look it up, I am supposed to be studying business law right now ... dont tell my wife im on xda
I tried to replace my digitizer once and I wouldn't recommend trying to fix it yourself.
There are several youtube videos of the teardown and they are elaborate enough but some parts are really tricky and it's not as easy as it might look. Took me a few hours and the result was far from perfect...
Took the mobo out and checked all plugs everything seems fine. Replaced and still no response I will give the digitizer a try hopefully it works. Ordering it tonight and post my results when it comes in and i install it. I'm supprised you had problems putting it back together only problem i had was my God damn shaky hands lol. I am assuming it fell just right and damaged the chip on the digitizer itself. If it ends up working I know for sure that I will be buying a very buff case! The internals on these things are so fragile!
hi, well, i always have the wifi error on my atrix, and i've seen the famous video on youtube tht shows how to fix this problem by just moving the ' small battery', but me!! i have pull it completly!!!! so i say bye forever to my wifi/btooth ?? or still hope! pls someoneeeeeeeeee..
thkssssssssss
did you actually take apart your phone?
if this is the thing you mean....

Then i'd have to say that doing so probably wasn't a GOOD idea to begin with. And it says to "remove and resolder" it... which does not look like it's in a place where it would be easy for anybody to do at home. Nice, though, how he doesn't SHOW that in his video. Just kinda shows him removing one side of it. Doesn't look like a battery, honestly. Looks more like it'd be some sort of resistor or capacitor or something.

Definitely not a resistor or cap. I think it is a battery with that strap across the top. Pretty big actually, relative to other surface mounted components. It looks like something i would attempt to solder by hand. But i wouldn't recommend it to someone with no soldering experience.
