15 and 17 February - Hero, G2 Touch General

Translated from Polish Android Website - edit cleaned up
Just as the topic is clear, has always been neglected by the owners of Hero HTC finally get an update. Why so late? Because it will not be updated for the Android 2.0 but straight to 2.1. Between 15 and 17 February, the update will be available for HTC niebrandowanego Hero - this update will include all of Europe. The problem, however, users can have the Era G2, a Hero brandowanego by Era, is unknown because the last update for them. We only know that for sure be delayed.
Information is sourced directly from HTC Poland, and therefore should be checked. In addition, we learned again that the HTC Magic no longer receive updates - Orange and HTC have not come to an agreement in Poland, in this case. And it was from Orange Magic update depends on Polish territory.
Which will update to the Android 2.1? Quote from Android Forums:
"-Android 2.1 is much faster.
-One interesting option is a preview of desktops. I do not know how to describe. You have the main screen. It uses the 2 finger zoom out as pages in your browser. Effect. Mixing up rozjeżdżają and have a brilliant idea.
-Icons are transparent envelope.
-At the bottom of the menu we have: phone, menu, contacts
-They added a nice transition when you quit the application and move around the options.
-Lock screen is not rounded.
Faster-running HTC keyboard.
-Added new widgets are HTC.
-Improved flashplayer. Operates smoothly.
-The modified program was gallery and media player. (Cosmetic procedures)
-And the rest of the news, which introduces a new android. (Market etc.)
-It shall be more RAM. about 130-140mb after killing the process. "
In addition, the same user advises:
"I also have one warning. Those who have changed SPL Hero may have problems with updating. The best return for this, which you had in the standard."
In addition, we learn also that the HTC Tattoo no longer receive updates (due to the weak performance of the device). But it is interesting that the HTC G1 and Android Tattoo 2.1 works quite accurately. Also, let's keep our fingers crossed tightly for magicians from XDA forums and our Android forum who will conjure up for us a drive.

This needs cleaning up NOW. I know you have stated that's its a translation but it just makes you dizzy with the repeated words.
Also without a link to the original article, a lot of people wont believe this.

Any indication about release date?
Hero support? That's actually the bad thing about hero. We will have to check if HTC decides to upgrade to the new android, while with Magic it will keep being supported..
Why would they update the Magic but not the Hero?

A vanilla Google os gets updates ota through their provider, while HTC has to make a hero build seperate

cuz HTC made their version of Android using SenseUI so its not directly supported by Google. HTC will have to cook us up and update, test sense and release
I wouldn't worry too much about Eclair just yet because:
a) The Eclair development SDK hasn't been released yet.
b) We don't even have Donut!
Of course, if Eclair does ship before year end, there is always a chance that HTC might decide so skip Donut entirely, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Regards,
Dave
motorola are to start shippng phones running 2.0 from the beginning of november so htc may decide to skip donut.

i reallyyy doubt that motorola will be shipping soon

Could you not install 1.6 or 2.0 without HTC sense though? Whether it came from HTC or from Google.
Sorry if I'm being a "noob" but we don't all spent all our time playing with our phones and reading up on them. Some of us just like making old fashioned phone calls.

1 thing to know btw.......
what exactly sense is? is it only the fancy thing with curve menu system and 7 home screens? or is it something integrated part of the android OS without which the OS cant even run?
i want to know this because for last 2 days i have been running without the sense home screen and it feels good with that simple and plain homescreen.
The Sens is the user interface that you c on your hero. i don't like the sens uit it slows down the phone. all the htc software for android are really really bad. i prefer the android plane OS.
HTC don't want to release the hero kernel, if they release it we will be able to install android OS without all the UI from htc.
you say you're running hero without sense home screen. you maybe don't see the home screen but it is still using your ram and running services on the background.
i'm looking forward to android 2.0 it looks great. and if you look @ www.droidoes.com you will see that verizon is gonna release their android 2.0 in november. but i still don't see any sdk for it what is weird :s.
the only thing we can do is to wait and see what happens next month

My guess is that the November date is just a date for a press conference or announcement of the phone, with the actual release date comes a month or two later. Besides the Android 2.0, it is nice to see that the hardware specification of smartphones is finally moving forward, i.e. manufacturers finally move to faster CPU, more memory, and bigger screen with higher resolution, rather than keep recycling the Qualcomm 528Mhz CPU and HVGA screen that powered to many devices over the last few years.
Is the locale language in menus, keyboards and dictionaries, a part of sence. Or would that be possible to have in a more native android version (like magic).
> I suppose it can be done. But i rather have 1.5 with sense than 1.6 / 2.0 without it.

Personally, I'm dying for 1.6 because I feel handicapped & shackled by the soft keyboard, and urgently need the Gesture support from 1.6 to do Graffiti-like handwriting recognition. If Gestures were implemented as a shared lib that could be installed to 1.5 in addition to being an inherent part of 1.6 I wouldn't mind as much, but as it stands with 1.5, text input is just painfully frustrating, and has really put me off from exploring things I'd otherwise be spending lots of time playing with. I shudder to even think about trying to launch a Perl or Python app from the shell one painfully-fighting-with-prediction-and-losing-badly letter at a time. Prediction and autocorrection might be tolerable for t3xt msg3z, but falls flat on its face and dies a horrible death when you're trying to type something in camelCase with inline.punctuation.

The original T-Mobile US G1 firmware (Android 1.0) had a voice dialler! Are you sure you're not thinking of the text-to-speech engine that's in 1.6?

Hero 2.1 after seeing Legend and Bravo

Hi:
I´ve seen videos presenting both the HTC Bravo and Legend with the expected Sense upgrade. I saw on Bravo home screen weather animation and animated backgrounds...as on the HTC HD2 while in Legend, static weather and static bakcgrounds.
Which one do you think we will get?
Legend kind...because of the mhz alikeness or Bravo style inspite the mhz differences?
Hoping it is Bravo....assuming it is Legend...
Maybe Bravo´s rom can be ported to Hero, I used to have HTC HD running HTC HD2 roms and it worked pretty good!!!!
Any comments?? Does anyone cares about this or just me?
Bye
i think that every 2.1 sense will be the same. and i just found that video of the legend WITH that animation (actually you can just see it for about 1 second) but it isnt static.
Cant wait to get all those new updates =)
Here's the link to that vid:
http://video.golem.de/handy/2836/praesentation-von-htc-desire-und-legend-auf-dem-mobile-world-congress-2010.html
Yes, you are right, I saw the weather animation....bad luck...no wallpaper animatin.
Well...something is something...!!!!
WTF is up with all those videos????
They are all the same. Is it really soooo interesting to see someone flip through the home screens? Didn't it occur to some reporters to also check other features and bugfixes (like the one where you can't select text in a website with the trackball). Now, you could say it's because the home screen has most of the new features. Well I beg to differ. If that's really all they have now, why the **** did it take them so long? If it's 2.1, there must be 2.1 features of which these guys could show the Senese UI integration.
I have just seen a danish interview with a talks person from HTC saying 2.1 sould be out for the Hero 1. april
I'm seriously getting annoyed by either htc, who doesn't announce properly, by the local divisions that announce too much ****, or the press and users doing that...
I had a look around on some videos.
It looks like the legend sense 2.1 does not have the voice to text feature but the desire does! (Looking at each keyboard)
Its sad that they took out some of android 2.1's features. (Hopefully im wrong)
Also noticed that there is an editable dictionary with sense 2.1.
I hope HTC will not start marketing by disabling software features like Nokia does. I hope thatthe only difference, usability wise, betwen Legend, Hero and Desire will be screen resolution.
I would consider very much about buying thesetwo new phones though, they will probably not release updates on time just like with Hero, for the same marketing reason.

Underwhelmed by 2.1 update - is there anything really cool and new I can do with it?

Now I have installed a ROM based on the official update (paul @ modaco's recommended repack).
But what's new???
I see that there are small, incremental improvements here and there, but overall I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of changes/improvements. It's all business as usual.
What's more, it turns out that Google Maps Navigation (the feature I was most looking forward to with the update) is not available in Australia so I can't use it after all.
There's also no voice searching like there is on other phones on 2.1. I tried installing a google voice search APK someone had floating around but it didn't work.
The improved Market app is nice, though I still can't filter or sort entries the way I'd want (how to sort by star rating and filter out anything containing the term 'soundboard'?)
Can anyone suggest some cool new things I can do with my new 2.1 based Hero?
Basically you can install lots more apps. But not much more. That's why I revert to stock because it's perfect
I think you can install an additional Maps apk (i think I have seen one some time ago, must be somewhere on my sd card), then you had 2 Maps entries in your program list, one of them did navigate, even if official navigation was not yet available.
Not sure if that still works though

That should be HTC's slogan FFS.
You can look for Brut.all maps somewhere in xda - they contain navigation everywhere in the world I think.
I've since read about Gallery 3D and live wallpapers. And voice integration in the keyboard. Again, not on HTC's official 2.1. Um... so HTC's customers just miss out?
I guess I could try waiting for the world wide english ROM. But I doubt it'd be something they'd have specifically removed just for the Taiwan ROM (would they?).
My other option is moving to a vanilla (AOSP perhaps) ROM. But then I'd miss the HTC features that are good like HTC mail, Peep, etc.
Anyway, I doubt I'm the first person to have grumped about this, you've probably heard it all before.

Firstly Gallery3d is an aosp thing i think, Its from eclair (Vanilla 2.1) Live wallpapers are not made for our hero,Mainly for HTC Phones using a snapdragon CPU so we wont get those.....Maybe if you had come from the raw 1.5 sense build to 2.1 Sense you would notice the difference?
Having running 2.1 for a while before the update is released will put a downer on the official update..
Oh and now we have no green camera issue
I was happy with 1.5 but I've installed VillainRom 10 and it's a nice update. Nothing spectacular but it just feels a bit more fluid and snappy. The camera surprised me: it seems a lot quicker and has more options.

There are some things some people have been really looking forward too, so they might be happy. But this is why people like me and others have been saying for a long time that the whole 'HTC-hate-thing-when-is-the-updating-coming' is very stupid, because in the end... it's just an Hero ROM!
Still, to be complete, some (new) things people might've been waiting for:
They got access to apps that were missing from the Market on <= 1.5
Bluetooth file transfer (and maybe other missing profiles?)
Google Navigation / Buzz / or other new Google additions 'only for 2.x'
Faster camera app
Newer (optimzed / faster) official Sense build.
People expecting Gallery3d, livewallpapers, Friendstream, etc... they just don't realize they have an Hero... a device that was already outdated when it came out, let alone a year later.

It's no 2.2, but still I feel that's a considerable Update.
Yes there are small updates here and there which make the experience better. Things like App Update notifications, nice fullscreen weather animations, more widgets, like Power controls, better camera, more setting options etc.
One of the most considerable advantages over 1.5 is app support. Apps which were coded for 2.1 are now visible and available. What's more Hero was the biggest factor in developers developing for min. version 1.5, as there are lots of Heros around. Now it's 2.1 all the way.
Other things of the top of my head: better Exchange, better faster browser, better Contacts manager, Voice integration and most certainly alt of under the hood improvements.
P.S. Use brut maps for navigation, as someone already said.
Biggest thing for me is probably Bluetooth, actually being able to send files, photos, music to another phone is something I have been missing a great deal.

Thanks to both of you for the tip about Brut Maps. It works
I've just flashed VanillaEclair and am enjoying it.
Looks like HTC's Sense stuff doesn't really evolve all that much across Android versions, whereas they've updated a bit more of the non-Sense stuff (much of which people with phones other than the Hero already had).
At the moment I'm feeling a little that I don't want to be held back by HTC Sense, hence giving a Vanilla ROM a spin.

HTC is going to improve Sense lockscreen & camera

Hi there,
I've read this Dutch article about HTC is going to improve their Lockscreen and Camera software.
This article says they're gonna allow the users to add widgets on the Sense Lockscreen with widgets and that HTC is going to improve the camera app so you can easily take great pictures (without blur) of moving objects or people.
This is quite great news, imo!
So what do you guys think?

the screenshot is from windows mobile.. so are you sure its about android?^^
Haha correct. It is from Windows Mobile
But I think they're talking about Android version
Because it's the only platform that allows customization.
Let's hope the update will come asap
Hopefully we get those camera improvements in the Gingerbread update.

From the sounds of it, even thought the screenshot is from WM, it sounds like Android.
Those improvements mentioned in that article apply for the HTC Sensation. HTC are talking about instant picture snapping and the new lockscreen. So maybe this article is mixing the phones?
Maybe the person that put this together was in a rush..... :L
So, will we be seeing these new sense implements that is the question... but in saying that it does say that existing phones will get it, and ours being one of the high end phones at the moment... that means us... right?
Sense 3 Perhaps
These features sound like they may be coming in the new Sense 3 which the Sensation and others will launch with.
Hopefully sense 3 will be released in future roms for our DHDs. If not I'm sure some devs will cook them into roms for us.

My first htc device and possibly my last

This desire hd was my first htc device, i've been waiting a while to be able to upgrade to a htc device having read how good the old desire (with htc sense) was. I am not a rooter so just wanted a stock phone with standard ui. I took delivery of the phone the third day it came out through vodafone (non branded.. thank god), initially i was impressed with the sence ui as this was my first android and htc phone. I was also impressed on how quick they released a couple of "fixes" for the phone.. that is until 1.72 !!!!!!!.. i installed this the first time i recieved the ota message.. around the end of nov beginning of dec. Like alot of users at the time i wasn't initially impressed with the "auto" setting on the camera/video, but (thankfully to the excellent guide posted on here) this was mostly fixed (the only problem being that by the time you set the camera up the picture oppurtunity may have passed !!!). As a casual camera user this didn't really bother me, HOWEVER the screwed up sms/ringtone/notification tone/sd card reading faults do!!!!!. since the begginning of december i cannot count the amount of missed/never recieved sms messages, htc knew about these problems and now almost 4 MONTHS later they still haven't seen fit to make the newer 1.84 available to unbranded phones (although it does improve certain parts of the phone i know it also adds a few new minor bugs), the point is sms is prob the most important and most used part of modern day mobiles, so surely it would make sense (pardon the pun) the address the most commonly used parts of their "flagship" phone!!. The returning to the default (and mostly unaudible) ringtone and message/notification after charging the phone is really winding me up!!!. It seems to me they've been concerntrating so much on their new "flagship" phones they've left us desire hd users behind. They seem happy to just sit back and let the rumour mill spread the news about upcoming updates, having us guessing when the 2.3 gingerbread is coming (and all of us hoping all the bugs will be fixed in it, although they haven't even comfirmed this!!!!), instead of this as a large company, they should make a official announcement to its customers.
Yeah, because that tale is only true of HTC!!
Good luck with your new Samsung / LG / Motorola / Sony Ericsson what ever you decide to go with next. I'm sure they are all completely fault free and a quick Google search would show no results what so ever of similar stories.
Good bye for now, but I'm sure we'll see you soon on the [whatever device] forum shortly.
Yes in an ideal world HTC would have fixed these issues by now, but we don't live in an ideal world. The solution is at hand though through custom ROMs, or if you don't want to go that root simply downgrade back to your original ROM via an RUU. I don't think manuacturers in general have much interest once they have your dough and in fact HTC are one of the better ones with froyo making it officially onto the magic before samsung got it to the captivate.
I've used 3 android phones before my dhd and wow what can I say , try Sony Ericsson x10 ) , you will see what is lack of support and lack of custom roms ...
So be happy you have the best phone available on the market.
I know that no smartphone is perfect, but surely htc could have worked on a ota that rolls back to the previous less problematic software version (after all some of the users on here have managed it!). All the smartphone makers are guilty of releasing buggy phones and then releasing fixes throughout the products life (which seems to be getting shorter and shorter lol ), but what would happen if you bought a tv from a shop and everytime you switched it on you have to retune the channels back in. Thats how it feels everytime i take it off charge, i have to change the ringtone (searching through all the mp3s on my phone to find it), then run the star wars soundboard (sad i know but r2d2 is a really loud notification tone) select the sound to act as a notification tone (which it no longer does!!.. but if i dont do this process first the notification tone isnt even seen in the notification sound setting .. i then go into sound settings change the notification to r2d2, i then have to go into compose message, then sms settings and select notification sound settings again for it to change, so that means i have to go through three different processes to set the notification tone everytime i recharge. The settings of the ringtone and notification tones weren't a problem in the first few weeks of getting the phone before the 1.72 update .. also forgot to mention i dont recieve a notification tone or light most of the time while the screen is switched off.. when i unlock the phone i have to check the messages to see if i have recieved any.. just plain weird lol... thank god i have the best smartphone on the market
I agree with u , 1.72 is extremely buggy. From deleting sms , no notif, random reboots etc. What really gets to Me which I don't understand is why release 1.84 to branded phones but not unbranded phones. HTC released the buggy update to both branded and un, but decided to release 1.84 to bran users and leave unbranded users stock with this crap.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I got my dhd as soon as it came out, and despite having put custom ROMs on 3 previous HTC phones, I decided that the dhd was perfect as stock. With the initial teething problems rooting the dhd, I decided I wasn't going to bother.
This was, however, before I did the update to 1.72, and all the problems that came with it.
What did I end up doing? Rooting my phone, removing all the problems and drastically improving performance and battery life. I recommend you do the same, it would be a shame to not take advantage of what this community has to offer.

SMS bug?Try Handcent SMS,Go SMS or Chomp SMS,all available in the market. In these you can even set your own music for notification! You'll have to turn off stock SMS app's notifications though.
Ringtone?Try this.Select your ringtone through the music app. Then go to settings and choose it from the ringtones list,it'll be there.Works perfect since I did this.
See?No need to root!
Although I'd recommend root,custom rom,overclock/undervolt,happiness!

I recommend you try rooting and using a custom ROM like RCMixHD, the true power of the DesireHD is only unleashed by letting developers get it working to its true potential.
That's the beauty of Android... if something does not work quite the way you like, it's not thaaaat hard to change it or tweak it... try doing that with an iPhone
Personally I rooted and went to CM7 less than a week after getting the phone... I don't know why, I just can't get used to Sense, everything is too big and not space-efficient, my eyesight is good enough!
Dude, why would you buy an Android phone and then use stock ROMs? It's like getting a Ferrari to drive only to the store with it... Root it, install a custom ROM, play with it a bit, learn something new, you can get it to work however you want it if you put in just a little bit effort...
this is my 3rd HTC manufactured phone (2x WM before this), and I really can't complain about the out-of-the-box OS/hardware.
Some minor gripes, but nothing is perfect.
I have rooted, S-eng'ed so I'm ready to move into the custom ROMs & kernels (still finding my feet with Android, it was second nature with WM) - however, for me the stock ROM is aceptable. My motivation is to get better engineering from our expert ROM chefs - & better battery life - but the brute power of the DHD bulldozes most of the OS inefficiencies.
But the recommendations here are the way to go, I chose Android since there IS great potential to improve the base product, through custom ROMs and apps such as Handcent:
root and flash a custom ROM! (spend some time getting familiar with the process, there are tutorials aplenty here, it's almost impossible to brick your phone)
over/underclock as needed
look for alternative apps that resolve your problems with the system apps (Handcent for SMS; Ringo for ringtone management etc)
& read, for example, some of the posts from the unhappy Galaxy users in their sub-forum here, and how Samsung set up that phone... you will see that the grass is not greener on the other side.
thanks for the advice guys.. im gonna give the official 2.3 ota a try (when it finally surfaces) and if its no better im definatley gonna custom rom it. I would never really consider this but it does seem the way to go to get the full potential out of the hardware... after all i cant make it any worse than it is now.. unless i brick it of course lol

There're a lot of bugs in HTC but for me know there is nothing better, firstly i was thinking about iphone but later when get used to all features of HTC i don't want to leave it! You should spend more time with your phone to feel it..
