Just went to a US/Mexico border town and my Hermes kept locking on TecTel rather than Cingular/ATT. In network choices it only shows one choice, whether TecTel or Cingular, as I moved away from the border. In other phones I had choices of various services, or at least it showed them. Is there a register change to allow this?
In SETTINGS => PHONE - TAB NETWORK you can set that either your phone will switch between the networks automatically or manually.
Depending on your network provider you are or are not allowed to use networks other than your home network. (International / national roaming). You will have to contact your network provider to see what networks you can use ...
Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?

Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.

From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.

After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

I live pretty close to the border with China and in a tall building. every so often, I notice that I am roaming on a chinese cell tower when I am at home!
This is an immense pita so I went into settings and under network preferences, I made sure the offending network was unchecked and moved all the way to the bottom of the networks list.
It still connects to the roaming network. Am I using this wrong? I used to have a similar issue with my P3600i and eventually switched to manual networks as it was the only thing I could get to work.
Is there a way I can tell the phone to never connect to xxxxx network?

Like the title says, the H910 connects to any network when the selected/preferred network is not available or has low signal. It doesn't matter if you manually select a network, if the signal goes very low it will connect to some other network.
The result is that you see "bars" but is not connected to the intended network and you may not realize that you are out-of-service. With an AT&T simcard you cannot select a network but even when traveling with a foreign sim (where the network selection is available) is still doing that.
Also, when is connected to the other network, you don't see the network name and if you try to make a call you get the "emergency calls only" message.
Probably this is considered a safety feature. Is there a way to turn this behavior off? I want my phone to be out-of-service if there is no signal. Especially since the signal at my home is very marginal lately and I would like to know whether I have service or not (at the moment I assume that if I see more than 2 bars that I don't have service).
Hey, guys. I'm new here, and definitely a noob.
Just a quick backstory, I live in a rural area with only satellite internet connection, aside from using my phone as a mobile hotspot. I do quite a bit of gaming when I'm at a place with low latency internet, and have recently started using my mobile hotspot for gaming (laugh all you want, it works out fine for the most part). Unfortunately, living in a rural area, there is very limited service. I'm not completely informed on the lingo, but out here, I've learned that I can only connect to two towers (?). One is HSPA+, and one is 4G LTE. Obviously, only the 4G LTE one is good for low latency connections. I know that carriers have certain towers that they try to connect to before others because the others can cost them more. My phone usually defaults to the HSPA+ network.
I have found a way to force it to the LTE signal. By going into the hidden menu > Field Test > Modem Settings > PDP Setting > APN Setting > ATTNextgenphone > Bearer - LTE, and then saving. Usually, after about 20 seconds, it will switch to LTE service. Recently, though, my phone will attempt to not use that access point, and then remain with no 4G or 4G LTE icon next to the signal strength graphic, and I cannot connect to the internet in any fashion. I'm not sure if AT&T has figured out what I'm doing (I doubt it), but I just want to know if there is any way to combat this or to go about connecting to that 4G LTE access point in an easier way? Maybe there is some sort of root (?) I can do?
Any help would be appreciated.
