Hi
My wife is threatening to tear off my arms if I buy a Nexus One just months after I got a Hero without asking her.
I am still considering it. How good is the voice control of the N1? Is it possible to operate it fully without hands?
You can use your nose to interact with the touch screen, if your arms are missing. Just order it!
I'd say that it's not possible to operate a touch phone fully without touching it.
according to this voice dial over bluetooth is still not implemented

Apologies for the odd title, it's hard to convey the nature of my question without a long explanation.
I have an Alpine right now. My main peeve with it is the fact that screen & button lock gets turned off as soon as I receive a message or call, allowing me to open any number of programs and connections whilst the device is still sat in my pocket - a real PITA when I have to have it on silent when I'm in uni.
I should be getting a universal in a week or so.
I noticed that the universal can be closed in such a way that the screen is not exposed at all. What I was wondering was if it is practical to keep it in one's pocket like this (yeah I have big pockets), preventing any buttons/icons being pressed when I receive a message/call when it is in my pocket. Can one still normally receive messages and calls when it is like that, and still be able to answer them conveniently? Flipping the screen over to answer a call doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
Bottom line, is there anything I should know about using the phone like this?
With the screen closed you can still answer calls.
If you want to check who is ringing you can lift the screen to check the number and then just close the screen again and answer the call with the answer button on the spine of the Universal.
Another advantage of this is that the screen doesn't gunk up as the exterior of the Universal is pressed against your ear, not the screen as happens with the Alpine.
I think, to answer your question, it is possible that you once the device is "unlocked" active, or in sleep mode, pressing the "call" button that is external on the hinge, can activate and make telephone calls in advertantly. though it is unusual.
in relation to pocket, it just fits into a top shirt pocket. in baggy shorts, with its weight, it tends to bang around a bit. in jeans and pants, its a bit big.
overall, as a phone it is functional for receiving calls, if you just receive all. opening the screen to see is a bit of a pain after a while. Setting ring tones for specific callers helps to ease this. bluetooth headsets are also getting to a point of allowing caller id.
There is a heap of "issues" posted around the website and some dissatisfaction with the device. but i am perfectly happy with it, and does everything i wanted, except sufficient memory.

Not a big deal to me, that is surely much less of an issue compared to my current problem with the unlocked screen. As for the pockets thing I don't think it will be a problem either, I'm used to the Alpine so I'm sure this won't be much of a big step.
Thanks for the responses guys, I'll be receiving mine tomorrow
My brother is getting my Alpine.
Edit: One more thing - does anyone know if my Alpine's car charger (3rd party, very cheap) will work with the universal or do I need to get a new one?
1 - Stylus camera. For those who does not like using the Dpad to take a shot and or for the upcoming touch HD using the stylus as camera button might work out.
2 - Stylus, light sensor, G-sensor together as a lock. I've seen keylocks with light sensor or the stylus. However, i'm sure many of us will agree the password lock on wm6 makes the device look like its from the 90s. Would it be possible to have all three combination of users own choice (some what like the G1's lock but with sensors instead of numbers or touch screen). Maybe its too fancy.
3 - Mute calls! Either in call or before picking up, would it be possible to make a trigger (flip phone 180 to left) to mute phone ring or hold call and flip the other way to undo. Or the other way around for left handed people. this way, you can flip to put the phone face down on table to mute or flip away from ear when driving to hold call.
4 - Finally, X1 is out!!!! Looks soo sexy. But seems soooo damn slow. But i can really care less about it. However, SE does have pretty damn good build in Apps and they have added them into the WM6 X1! Is there any chance if someone would want to use SE example camera's funtion/walkman function on a HTC device instead? In other words, is there any way to extract their build in apps to put them into other devices.
Sorry if bringing up so much. For all the pros here, there might be some stuff that sounds stupid but i wouldn't know cuz i have no clue on how to create my own ideas for testing. Would love to learn how to do so. Tips on how to start doing these shorts of things for a noob would be helpful!
O yea, one more thing, GAMES! needs to be improved for WM devices! as much as such smart phones were meant for business use, having more games wouldn't hurt. plus, g-sensor would help.
Hi people!
I leave i Sweden and it's very cold here right now. Anybody want to take their gloves of to answer calls on a touch screen Android phones.
We (north people) need an app that makes it possible to answer the calls with physical button.
I use HTC Desire. I think that the optical joystick button in the middle would be perfect. Or may be a search button? It is on all the android phones.
hmm, that may an issues for all Touchscreen device..
At Walmart, they have gloves that allow you to use touch screens while wearing them. They are awesome I have tested them on my Droid Incredible and my ipod touch that has a screen protector on it.
Well, I think it's much better to get an app. I can even pay for it on Market.
In one or two months from now temperature and conditions will be sufficient for driving motorcycle here in Denmark again.
The Desire Z is connected to the MC intercom - but how can i operate it with big MC gloves?
Off course I know it will never be possible to work the whole feature set with big gloves.
First priority is to be able to answer incoming calls. Second priority is to make calls from the favorites contact widget.
Sewing something into the gloves, is not an option, since I do not want to risk damaging the Gore-Tex.
Is it possible to use some kind of capacitive tape or adhesive foil?

Hey,
Well as far as I know the pens and other stuff to use with capacitive just "extend" your body, so must be in touch with.
But you could use headphones. The phones brought with the phone can take calls and there are apps for voice dialing. But I really doubt it will work well in the car.
An other option is an bluetooth keyboard. I've seen an app for managing those. And there could be some, which are handable with your gloves. But I've never tried

I use my g2 with gloves and it is in a ziplock or three while I'm offroad. might take 2-3 tries when its in the normal 3 layer ziplocks, but works fine with only one.
my gloves are obviously not gortech though. if you don't want to puncture the index or thumb for the thread, just glue (think a snail trail) from your wrist area (inside) to your index area (outside) a capacitive thread. it works, I've seen it before.

DON'T PHONE N RIDE!!!!
Hi all,
Got my Nexus 4 back in November; this last week it fell out of my lap while I was on a bus, hit the floor and the screen shattered. I was hoping that it would behave similar to iPhone shatters I've seen on friends phones (where the digitizer wasn't adversely affected), but I wasn't so lucky.
I've been able to perform basic functions on the phone using adb input keyevents, and got a Webkey server running so I can control the phone remotely. I'm planning on buying a new phone in the coming months, but while I'm currently trying to save money I wanted to get the phone working as well as possible using voice automation. I've been reading that the combination of Open Mic+ and Tasker is pretty powerful, but I'm lost on where to start from a programmatic standpoint.
Also Open Mic+ hasn't been foolproof, is there any way to bind voice activation to a hardware button?
Anyone have any tips on complete voice automation without any touch input? I can read the screen so I don't need the phone to read its contents to me or anything, but I'd like to be able to have the same functionality that adb's shell gave me with keypresses. So I could say "scroll down", "left, left, left, enter" and it would tab to the left a few times then select the option I had chosen.
