Occasionally my Hero will go into a kind of spasm
It'll be sleeping on my desk, and to use a recent example, I was in the market, about to download Yelp, when I had a call on my work landline.
Put my phone down, whereupon it sent to sleep.
Finished my call, and picked my phone up.
Pressed the red button to wake it, and it doesn;t wake. The screen is still dark.
I press the red button again. Screen goes dark.
Expecting a reboot I wait.....nothing.....still nothing. Press the red button a couple more times.
then 15/20 seconds later the screen will come on, go off, come one, go off, as if it's catching up with my previous keystrokes....
what's up with that ?
Eventually I just pulled the battery.

so.. how often does your car sink in lake??
those times when it does... my guess is that your HERO was able to work and be a HERO and help you out
I have this same exact problem. Hopefully when (if) we get the new kernel, it'll be more stable and won't have this problem.

Actually, I noticed my lagg got REALLY bad after posting in this thread joking about it
(Nah, JK). But really, I had never had THAT bad of a lagg when waking up the phone, but lately it had been getting worse. I figured the only things I was using differently was Weather Bug Elite (it adds temperature to the taskbar) and the battery widget that also is on the taskbar. I unninstalled WBE, and the lagg got way better (it's not gone but WAY better than it was). Do you use the WBE app?

Alot of times it has just come off the charger, in which case I understand the lag...but most of the times just when it is sitting on my desk.
I do wonder if it has to do with the orrientation sensor, just because it's typically face down (Like after ignoring a phone call) when it happens

I am on my third SGS from Bell Mobility. I returned the first two because of the same problem. I would be using the phone like normal, and at random times I go to make a call or something, and notice that the phone is turned off! On my last 2, i couldn't turn it back on using the power button and assumed it was turned off, so i would re-install the battery to get it working again (until it would happen again a day or two later).
Well, today it happened for the first time on my third SGS (on the 2nd day after i had it). This time, i decided to hold the power button for about 10 seconds to see what would happen...and the phone restarted (didn't re-install battery like i used to).
What could be causing this? I thought it was a defect in the phone, but this is the third one to do it. It happens randomly (sometimes every 3rd day, sometimes everyday). Anyone know what it could be? Could the phone just be 'frozen' in sleep mode? (meaning the phone is still on, just the screen is frozen black)...or could the phone actually be off? Thanks in advance!
The same happened to me several times, but since i changed the default home screen mananger, it never happened again. So, maybe this is a software issue, i dont know.

default home screen manager? could you please explain that to me (noob!). thanks
Just download from market Launcherpro or Adw launcher and Home switcher to set default layout.
Btw it's strange, because my SGS havent hanged up even once since i have it.

I have the same problem. But it happens at least few times a day. I have to check my phone is on regularly to aviod miss call.
I am using a rooted JF7 ,anyone have idea how to solve it?
SetCPU is known to cause that.
The device shuts down automatically.
Just realized WHEN this happens
Happened again today... I tried calling my phone to see if maybe it was just stuck in sleep, but it went to voice mail. This is very annoying because i cannot rely on my device to be on when it should be (ie- for an alarm) The only way to get it back on was to either re-install battery or hold down power for about 10 seconds. This is my 3rd SGS and it happened on the 1st one and the 3rd (only had 2nd one for a day).
I just realized today that it only happens to me at places where i have no signal. It happened at work 5 times (where i get no reception), and once in the forest where i was bike riding. I was in an area that showed no signal, and shortly after the phone was off. (it doesn't make any shutdown noise or anything, I just realize sometimes the phone has randomly turned itself off.
Could reception have something to do with this? Now that I think about it, the 1st phone i had also turned itself off at work....never at home. Will 2.2 fix this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Three handsets exhibiting the same problem?... I'm starting to think that this might be somehow related to your sim-card...
just leave the phon in stock and it'll work better
once you start adding apps to change the normal stuff, weird things happens

A sim card can cause glitches in how a phone works? That's interesting...how exactly is that possible?
As long as you weren't installing any 3rd party application which can cause this and there's no strong electro magnetic field nearby, which might disrupt your sgs ... I can't think about nothing else...
if you can try a different sim card for a day or two, maybe you'll figure that out...
WI don't know what happened (really, I don't) but last night something really strange happeend to the phone.
I wasn't even using the phone or running any apps (heck, even background data was turned off) and the next thing I know, my girlfriend points out something weird on the screen: my phone had gone into a recovery-like screen. It had a picture of a phone and a red triangle with a exclamation point. Red, I tell you. After more than a year tinkering with Android, I had never seen a red one sign. Also, what the heck? It just reboot into that screen by itself, it seems.
Wish I could explain where it came from, give you a log or show you a picture but none of these I can provide. All I can tell you is the image of a phone with a red exclamation point.
Happed to my girlfriend phone don't know why she was at school when it happened....

Let us know what's up, see if they know what it's about. I have no idea what it was, it was surprising.
I'll see if I can exchange mine for another one this week, I think.
Umm details? How long did it stay on this screen? What did it do after? Reboot, power off, ect. Did you do anything after? I can't offer any answers but anyone that can needs this info and ill be watching mine for the same. You never know this could be an exploit path.
It went all by itself to this screen. It was set on a table, doing nothing. Only telephony was turned on (meaning only phone calls or text could come in); data, BT, GPS, and WiFi were turned off.
It stayed on this screen until I decided to reboot it. It seems to have been on this screen for a while. I did a hard reboot (Power + volume down + trackpad).

Same here, it happened just as i plugged it in last night and I freaked out since I haven't seen that screen before (rooted my G1 two winters ago) but I thought I did something until I read your post. No updates though.
is it possible that maybe that update pushed out to yalls phones without needing approval and it was in recov for a second from it??? just throwing that out there, otherwise im clueless.
User needs to give the phone the approval for update to start. No way in hell this was an update.

Too lazy to dig it up now, but I recall that there is a provision to make a FOTA update forced install, even possibly w/o user intervention. However I don't think this has ever actually been utilized before, and neither would I expect the update background to use a red exclamation mark.
Logcat of one of these "red exclamation mark" devices would be useful.

First I've heard of something like that. I'd try a system reset. If that doesn't work it probably should be exchanged
Have same issue. Sometimes you need to slide twice to get it reboot.

Had the same problem with my original (12/10 build) DVP. It's a hardware issue and you should have Dell replace your device. The new one I received does not power off when I open it quickly.
If your phone crashes for any reason (sliding it open and it powers off, WiFi freeze, etc.) it seems as if you lose the text. It's annoying as all hell.
have not had the issue with my dvp but had the issue with my old xperia x1.
I think it is something to do with the ribbon cable.
I had that same exact issue with my first device. It actually happened opening or closing it. It has been replaced and the new one doesn't do that anymore.
I'm having an issue where when I close the slider, it turns of the screen, but leaves the digitiser active.
Currently I can't use the camera without the slider being open!
Has anyone else had "wake lag" on their Atrixes?
What I mean is where the device is sleeping, screen off, in your pocket for a while, etc. Press the power button, count to 3 or 5 or so, then the screen comes on.
It doesn't seem to happen all the time, but when it does it's really annoying.
i jsut noticed that on mine too. its getting really annyoing.
I just noticed this after reading this post... haha now its annoying me! lol mine takes about 2.5 seconds once in a while. Not a deal breaker though
I do see it occassionally.

Maybe it has to do something with the update we got. I don't remember it having wake up lag when I had first gotten it.

I don't either, but I don't remember it when I first updated to 1.57 either. Maybe it has something to do with uptime? I haven't rebooted in 5-6 days. Coming from Windows Mobile, I am happy to have a phone that doesn't get "stuck" and need to be rebooted every day but....
I don't know what lag you guys are talking about.. ? I get zero lag whatsoever.
Well i'm noticing it now. The longer the phone is in standby, the longer the sleep time is (up to about 5 seconds)

Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about.
My phone has been in my pocket for almost 2 hours. I pulled it out, pressed the power button, and it took ~2 seconds to get to the lockscreen.
pushed the button again to turn the screen off, pushed it again to turn it back on, it took ~1 second.
I swear when I got home yesterday from work and turned it on it took like 5 seconds.
On a related note, it used to seem take longer to come out of standby when I was using SetCPU and forced it to 200 MHz when the screen was off. I don't use SetCPU anymore, but maybe it's related to CPU scaling. If the phone is in "deep sleep" and the CPU clocks down to its lowest frequency maybe it takes longer to wake up.
yeah i noticed it when i needed to reply to a text that a pressed it didnt come up so i pressed it again nothing and gain then it did. i thought it was my power button. but after a reboot it was doing the same so i figured it was the update we got.
I have this lag, new thing, happened today for the first time. Nothing to do with the update, since I'm on Bell's Atrix (no update yet). I even took off the battery once, as it was not waking up after a good 20 secs...
Sent from my Atrix
It has gotten worse for me as the day has gone on.
I think this phone's going back before my 30 days are up. This is just another little thing in a long list of little things that are bugging me. I want to like the phone, I really do, but it's just not doing it for me I guess.
i installed the update for AT&T users and i got to say that there is no wake up lag for me anymore.
just my 2 cents

Nop no lag
never mind the lag is still here.
I completely drained my phone so it shut itself off. When I restarted it after it had charged for a while it seemed a lot snappier. Maybe the phone just isn't made to handle 96 hours of uptime.
Kind of like older Windows PC's lol.
i just factory reseted my phone. lag still there. or maybe becuase its downloading apps. ill see how it goes.
Anyone else see this? Usually works that all of a sudden I need to press the power button to turn the phone on.
I think I have found the issue.
I believe it's pocket mode and the sensor stops reading and thinks it's covered
Yeah. It happens to me every so often. See this thread, https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/help/lock-screen-freezes-t3869001. It was really starting to get bad when I was on 9.0.6. Sometimes even hitting the power button wouldn't wake it immediately. I'd have to hit it a few times, which would then trigger the camera. Since I updated to 9.0.7, it hasn't happened as frequently, maybe only a couple of times. I hadn't considered it possibly being related to pocket mode since I notice it mostly when I pick up the phone off of my desk.

Yeah I take the pocket mode comment back. I only noticed it happening the device was covered but it has happened the times within two days where the device is out on my desk. I can't find a cause or pattern it's just annoying.
