Ok guys, I'm having a bit of trouble here.
Here's my situation. I'm currently on an orange 18 month contract, with 3 months left on my contract, so I can upgrade to something else in April, I've been told.
I rang Orange regarding the broken contacts on the volume rocker switch, which I think quite a few people have had problems with. They offered to send me a replacement phone which I agreed to. They then rang me back saying they were out of stock at the moment and I could wait 3 days or so for new stock for my replacement or they could send me a HTC Hero right away. I'd still have the option to upgrade my phone in April when my contract expires, allowing me to keep the Hero and choose a new phone, but I'd never be able to get the Touch HD again if the Hero ever had any problems.
So should I go for the HTC Hero or wait a couple of days for the Touch HD?
I really don't know what to do..opinions please!
Come on, guys, nobody's willing to give me their opinion on this?
I'm really surprised they'll send you a replacement so soon before the end of your contract!
Personally I'd either:
a) Accept a new phone (either one) and sell it on eBay for ~£200, then upgrade in April
or
b) Take the HTC Hero, to try out Android. If you don't like it, you can sell it in three months and upgrade to a HD2
Or if the HD2 (or another phone) is not to your liking, try out a new phone, get a new upgrade, sell them both, buy a HD, and still make a few hundred £££s in the meantime!
Thanks for the reply Smeddy, I see where you're coming from but that's quite a detached view. I'm looking for an opinion in terms of what a fellow HD Rom-flashing addict would do lol, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who's quite attached to this phone.
No more responses, guys?

Well its totally up to whether or not you want android or wm. If they are willing to still give you a free update in April and you want android, then it sounds like a good deal. But I'd get it in writing or at least take person on phones details and a reference number. If you want wm, then I'd wait a few days until a replacement HD is available
JM2C
I would wait for the HD.
At the moment Orange do not have any phones that I would "upgrade" to.
Come April that might change !

Andrew
Umm I had heard that the Touch HD had been discontinued with Orange. The fact that they have said they will replace with a hero, does that mean you have Orange insurance?
I have to agree with Fallen Spartan.
Without written confirmation I'd wait for HD, with it I'd try Android...
I do have insurance, yup. I'll give them a call back in about 2 hrs to see if the offer's on the table and get it all written down and sent to me. I'm leaning towards the Hero for 3 months and then see what Orange has to offer then as an upgrade..I still think I'd probably be quite gutted about giving up my HD though, that's the only thing stopping me..
I think I've decided. Considering on the HD I can run both WM and Android (not fully stable yet, I know but it's still there), I think I'll stick with the HD for another three months and then look to see what I can get then. If I don't see anything on Orange by then that I want to upgrade to, I'll look elsewhere.
I hope I don't change my mind again lol
Thanks to everyone for their input, much appreciated

What made you change your mind again? Was this after talking to your provider again and them not giving guarantees etc?

Not at all, I didn't call them up until about 5 minutes ago. I think I'm most probably going to go with an Android HTC in 3-6 months time anyway so I'd like to keep hold of the HD as I've spent a lot of time tinkering and playing with regarding ROMs etc and would like to see how the windows scene progresses, even when I'll have my future Android phone.
Just flashed back to standard Orange ROM and SPL, ready for pick-up after work tomorrow..wow, it looks strange!

I've been doing a lot of research, and reading on the G1 forum, but i was just curious what you guys thought about the new Tmobile G1. It looks like a really slick phone and I'm seriously thinking about ordering it.
I know a lot of people will post the "its awesome" pitch.... but honestly
pros: extremely powerful hardware with a very stable operating system.
cons: the operating system is very new... meaning that there is no real software or rom development out there for it.... meaning no customization. (and currently no real games at all!!!! lol)
conclusion: im happy enough with my wing that i PERSONALLY will stick with it for a while (especially with ttrans new 7.4 rom - great performance and plenty of space).... as soon as some real progress is made in development for android i will buy a G1
I pre-ordered mine 2 hours ago and can't wait to get mine on November 10th.
I have the Wing and love it but I'm the type of person that gets bored really fast. So G1 here I come!

Well if your that type of person then you will only be entertained by the G1 for about a week... i've been doing some reseach on it and most of the reviews say that its pretty basic and needs work by developers! the only reason i would get one is the fact that it has the hardware to support 3G..but my location wont have it till next year so im happy with my wing!!
i personally love my wing
i can see my self upgrading to the touch pro instead of the g1
i ilke the innovative look the the g1 but if i get some hand on with it i can see which phone i will go to
i have had a lot of hands on with the touch diamond so i can fix a lot of the issues with the touch pro if i get it
Look, I loved my Wing when I had it too. But any one who thinks the G1 won't blow the Wing out of the water is ridiculously stupid. And I don't say that to offend any one either. Do some research. Look at what the phone can do and what they phone will do in the future. People can make applications. That right there says a bunch. Imagine the kind of **** we'll be able to use. Android may be new, but it's gotten great reviews. As time goes on, it will only get better for the G1 and its users. There's a reason they've sold over 1.5 million pre-orders for the G1. Stick with Windows Mobile if you want, lol.

I just wish I had one so I could actually spend time with it. The fact that it's more or less open source, means there will be a ton of programs and applications once there is time to make them. I think I'll hold off for a bit, but 179 is ridiculously cheap compared to the wing, and has the hardware to smoke, but for the time being, I think I'll just keep moddin my wing and do some more research.

Nah, I'm going to wait and do more research and see what programs, roms, and games become available. I think I'll stick with the wing for now, and just mod and flash roms every other week! lol. But, the G1 is only 179 so thats a huge price drop. Either way, I really can't wait to see what becomes available for the G1.
what would be great would be a g1 wm6 port - with fully functional drivers..... i know everyone is talking about getting android on their phone, but just think for a second how nice it would be to get a nice new extremely fast phone for 170 odd dollars and continue using all the software you are familiar with.... and then as soon as application development and customization become mainsteam for android you could always flash back. i know its too much to wish for because of the lack of drivers, but it would be great for me if it ended up happening

You know, that would be PERFECT. I'm really not that familiar with the Android o.s., but if they could incorporate it into WM6, then it would be hands down the winner. We could use everything we already use to load applications, etc. Since it's supposed to be open source, maybe somebody will figure out how to do it?!?
G1 vs Wing
This month in PC Magazine (October 2008) Sascha Sagan, the director of new product reviews, said this,"never buy a product in the first few weeks after it comes out. Wait a month. By then... you will be able to tell if something is really worth a buy".
My two cents,
Paul D.
G1 will eventually be better than the wing, just not now. There's alot of holes that need patching up in the os to make it a real competitor to wm. When u compare Android right now to say ttran otp 7.x, Android isn't even in the same league. But give it some time, and maybe Android 2.0, then u'll really start seeing what G1 can do.
Also, this will be a fun phone in regards to xda's developing and hacking community and also to us, the end-user. As people start accessing and examing the innards of Android, who knows what juicy things can be created and imagined. Only issue i see is the stuff they left out, but the os seems to be solid with no real problems experienced. Messaging needs work, with mms being the main problem (can't send gifs or video).

Yeah I agree. Seeing how this phone is really meant to be modified, I can't even imagine the amount of software, roms, mods, etc there will be for this phone. I do think it will take some time, so I believe I will hold off, but I'm pretty excited about it.

that is exactly what i want. i just want to keep useing windows mobile. it has been around for ever (ce). hopefully someone in the linux community will figure out how to flash it to what ever you want.
I am a G1/Wing owner. I got my G1 2 days ago and i can tell you, i am very happy with the phone so far. I do miss using TTran's OPT and hope they port TouchFlo2D to Android. The Manilla Theme is the best i've seen!
I am also one of those people that would much rather run Linux on my PCs at home, but don't because i am in the IT field so i need to stay current on Windows. Anyhow, I understand people wanting to wait and recommend most do that. I am not usually the type to jump on a product at Version 1 until some updates and public testing has been done. But i am looking forward to Android's growing pains!
I just upgraded to a G1. What I did was, when the G1 presale was announced, I called to say I was going to cancel my service soon and asked what they would offer to keep me. The CS rep asked what I had in mind. I said I wanted the to see if there was a way to get the G1 with 1 a year contract. The CS rep told me not until after the actual launch but she would lower my unlimited family text messaging to $9.99 permanently if I would wait until the launch to decide. I agreed. So today, I called back for the G1. They offered me the G1 for $179 + NO $18 upgrade fee if I agreed to keep my four lines for 1 year. So, that's what I did. I wasn't going to cancel anyway because, it's hard top beat T-Mo's rates, even if the coverage is a little weaker than other carriers in my area. My Wing will likely be up for sale after I evaluate the G1.
Update:
I just canceled my order. I don't want to put $800 on the line to save $300.
Im thinking of getting the My touch from Tmobile. I have the TP2 but dont care much for it. I have done some reading here, but would like to get some advice from My Touch owners. Last question, is the Hero Roms working good?

as far as using it on the mt? honestly im disappointed with it i never use the touchflo (which is the sense ui look) but i like the htc features so i just use those... sprint will have the real hero coming out this month if you want it that bad but if you dont care about speed and dont mind waiting at least a minute every time you hit the home key for it to load then go for it but its just too slow for me
**i must say i love the size of the mt3g its way slimmer than the tp2 and g1 which was a hugh plus for me and reason i still use it
Samsung Galaxy Lite.
There are 4-5 registered Android devices said to be dropping Q4 of this year for T-Mobile USA.
The MyTouch is fantastic. I have a G1 as a spare for development and testing. However, there will always be a growing trend with "the next best thing."
Keep in mind, there's a lot of this year LEFT to go. Keep your options open...open-source that is! HA!

He makes a valid point as well.
It just depends on what you can afford for the various data packages offered by the carriers.
My preference being: T-Mobile USA!
Fantastic service, loyal to them for almost 8 years now. Nothing but positive experiences with them.
Like I said though...the MyTouch is nice, but hold off...it could be worth it.

I am using a mytouch and love it. This is my first android phone and I don't think I will ever go back to windows mobile. These phones are more versatile and the interface is whatever you want it to be.
I don't use a hero ROM on it because I have heard too much about it being slow. I will wait for the optimized version to show up before trying that.
I was going to get the TP2 but the cost put me off. I am glad it was too expensive now. Showing off this phone to people at work has made 3 other people get an android phone.
I Dont know that holding off will do you any good.. I have seen the specs for the other droid phone that tmo us is supposed to get this year (well all of whats available) and honestly the mt3g is I think still the best one (assumeing you want a non keyboard slim phone)..
I know there is supposed to be some lower end ones coming out, but if you have the TP2 now I am guessing that doesn't really interest you..
Afternoon all
I have been reading all the reviews about this amazing phone but have a small concern, I can upgrade/swap provider next month shall i get the HD2 or will someting better come out in say 3-5 months and do you think WM7 will come to the HD2??
No matter what you get, something better will always come along in a few months time. If you worry about that you'll never end up getting anything I'm afraid. I just got the HD2 yesterday on SIM free, having come from the iphone 3G. Have to say, overall I'm impressed with the HD2, probably not quite as polished as the iphone, but you can do a lot more with it. Think of it more in terms of a small laptop rather than a phone.
I've never had a windows mobile before, and I must admit it's taking some time to get my head around it and get things set up, but am getting there now I think. Certainly one of the hardest phones I used in terms of getting it set up right, but then there are so many features and settings. It'll be worth it in the end I'm sure. PLus the guys on here have been a HUGE help. Certainly the best and most useful phone and gadget forum I've been on. There's an answer for just about everything on here.

fully agree on this as well
HD2 does have some bugs but I've never seen a phone / device without bugs. Update to WM 7 has neither been approvid nor declined officially but fact is that from hardware specification is should be able to deal with WM 7.
You need to commit at some point - as usual along the whole life - so either you go for HD2 or you can wait for the next 3 - 5 month and get then your favourite device which will probabely be better than HD2 to some extent but be ensured that only some months after your purchasing you will be facing new devices better than the one you've got.
Cheers,
LEE
p.s after having this great peace of hardware/software for one month, I would go for that today again....
It's a great phone, there's nothing out there yet that I would swap this phone for.

Not strictly true. I contacted HTC directly who assured me that there will be a free update for windows mobile 7 on the HD2 when it is released. However, they did say that Windows mobile 7 will not be released until towards the end of 2010. Knowing how these things get delayed it'll be more likely early 2011 then
Thanks for all the quick answers my mind is made up will get one when my contract is up and moving to o2 UK
Just one more thing i have a diamond and the battery life if very bad if the HD2 any better i hope so cos can only use it as a mp3 player for about 3hrs then battery is dead
let's say your HD2 fell in water, or fell on the floor, or for some reason was suddenly not operating and cannot be fixed, and you have to buy another unit.
will you get yourself a new HD2 now that you really know the device? or buy another phone?

Hard to say if i get another HD2 as there are many other phones out there with the same spec as an HD2. But if there were not id buy an HD2 in a moment as its a great phone, great screen, excellent call quality, active rom creating community for upgraded / custom roms .. Yeah it is a great device and id give it some thought if id have to purchase a new one ..

Probably id get a DroidX when it arrives. It has a similar spec and screen size as the HD2 and looks very nice .. Id be able to surf the web no probs on that device which is the primary reason i bought the HD2, so for me any device that has a large screen for web surfing and allows me to make a call once in a while would do me fine .. Hey would the 5" Dell Streak be too big for the pocket, hmm id give that one some thought too
Nope, I love my Leo but I'd get an Android device and will be doing so when I can upgrade next January. I'd like to stick with a 4.3" screen though so therefore I'd like an Evo. But HTC have decided not to sell them in the UK so it would have to be a Desire.
I love my leo too, buti'll buy a droidX if I have to change quicker.
I like it, but prefer android based OS.
So if I could get as big a screen with TMOUSA, then I would change.
I'll wait for HD3
no, I will never buy such device.
Why? read my posts, there and then on this forum, including compete list of what's very wrong with it.
In short:
-poor support
-poor amount of updates, actually over because HTC discontinued the device
-official rom suck and is buggy
-HTC's philosophy to attack the one making roms
-Stupid design (sound, power button on the front, etc...)
Etc...
Also, I look competition and I see new Motorolla X, and I'm tempted to say: wow.
I heard feedback from people with droid and they did not have to wait custom roms to say "it works"...
If I broke my leo, I'd get a HD4, cause I hear its going to have a flux capacitor and be capable of generating the 1.21 gigawatts needed to power it.
Well, I ran into such a situation. My HD2 was not recognizing any sim card 50% of the time. And when it did, it only lasted for a short while. After trying all non invasive fixes, I decided to "operate" on it, taking it down to the screen. Still couldnt get it right. So I bought another one. I think it is a great phone for what I use it for. And, now I have a parts phone!
interesting question
Currently happned to me something similar. Phone has fallen out of my pocket on the ground, it was only 50-60cm, but screen is broken like if someone throw it against a bricked wall.
It will cost me at least 150EUR, bad luck. They do not repair only glass because is stick together with display and removing can break it.
I saw it at some thread ,that this is more problem of the hole around hw keys at the bottom. So basicly the design of the front panel, when phone is falling at bottom side.
But if it will be destroyed completely, I am not sure, but probably I will buy something else:
- phone itself is almost 9 months old, there are or shortly will be better phones
- there are still bugs after almost a year, and if they are solved they are not available for customers, for example official region version differencies
- is good that somewhere at forum is ROM which helps with battery consumption in standby mode, but you are not able to use it, basicly you are forced to break waranty otherwise you will be keep on usatisfied with device and forced to wait for official version for your region and wait and etc.
I like this device, but I am not blind to see weak points of the device or company policy, so it is almost 50-50 but time is ticking and competition will bring us better phones soon, I am optimist
If that happened tomorrow, Id get a HTC Desire.
If it happened just before the Nokia E5 is released, Id go buy a cheapo phone to tide me over till E5's release.
HD2s are really cheap now on ebay, and I have a pretty fair library built up already so chances are good I'd pick up another one. Although it's equally likely I'd get a big Dell Streak. I mean have you seen the thing? Its keyboard has a numeric keypad!!!
If I absolutely needed a phone immediately, it would be a toss up between another HD2 or iPhone 4. Android on the HD2 seems closer every day so having that option would be nice - but I've got WinMo exactly how I like it and I don't mind it at all. Further, lets face it, the 4.3" screen size is just spoiling. I wouldn't switch for an Evo, and the DroidX is just TOO big.
If I could wait a few months, I'd look for a HD3 / other WP7 device... or an iPhone 4.

Ditto, Desire all the way. I am looking into Android a little more lately, I most probably won't, but I am trying to persuade myself to buy one.
I might get a Desire not because i don't like my HD2 but because i always have an itch to try something else.
Having said that it would be a close call i am due an upgrade on one of my contracts and was looking yesterday on the vodafone site, jeepers have you seen the prices on the Iphone 4's, flipping eck even if i wanted one i wouldn't get one, thats one expensive phone...
And having had a look around i've decided to stay with my HD2 for a while until something else comes out...
"I might get a Desire not because i don't like my HD2 but because i always have an itch to try something else."
I know what you mean. I spent a year or so with my WM Tytn II - loved it then kind of got irritated by it's clunkiness ... had a Hero with Android for a year - loved it then kind of got bored and wanted a change ... ended up losing it and taking the HD2 as a replacement.
Android has some great integration, especially for social networking, but IMO it's not a great OS for business and things like emailing/file management. WM appears to be lacking in the former (although the HD2 is better because of HTC's work) but stronger in the latter.
For those reasons, I'd like to stick with the HD2 and see what my upgrade options are - iPhone 4 is an obvious option for me, but it's not often seen as the greatest tool for business etc.
Android is the future
I know that hurts, especially all of us that have HD2(Windows mobile), but Android based devices are future. So probably if I broke my phone(I hope not), I will buy EVO or Desire. But I want to point out, i will never buy iPhone 4.

Well, after reading all the previous posts, I was almost convinced to change to Droids, but reading your post, and the fact that you had TYTNII like i did, and you tried Droid for a year, i am sure you have a good point that droids are goo for social networking (showing off) and WM is good for business, and business is what i need.
but reading other posts and looking at my past 4 years experience in HTC, i am more than convinced that HTC company sucks, so i will try to find a better WM device from another company, but i am not sure if there is any
I need your help in making a decision.
My Orange contract on my Blackstone runs out in 3 months and 14 days. In 14 days I have the option of renewing my contract and taking a new phone.
I have been eyeing up the HTC Desire, but yesterday I went in to the Orange shop and they told me that there is a global shortage and they have no idea when they are coming back in to stock.
He then showed me the Samsung Galaxy S - my god the screen is breathtaking! The phone itself though feels really flimsy and like it might break, and I generally despise Samsung phones (+ they sponsor Chelsea, and that makes me physically sick).
My questions are as follows:-
- Should I wait until the Desire is back in stock?
- Should I just jump the HTC ship I have sailed so happily in for so long and get a Samsung?
- If I do get the Galaxy S, can I get rid of that crappy Touchwiz and put Sense on it?
Please help!
In three months time the Desire HD should be out...

Pretty much every phone/gadget news feed says October is the expected launch date, that'll make at least six months since the desire launched, which seems reasonable.
So if the choice is between a Desire or a higher spec Samsung, I'd wait for HTC's next release
ah damn it... i best ring orange business and see if they have stock of the desire - got a phone on order thats needed.

Am I missing something here? I had one in my hand just this morning - it's been out for a long time!!
I have been through millions of comparisons, and been in to the Orange shop - think I will be going for a Galaxy.
Not just because they are in stock, but because of the screen and general performance. I will miss Sense, but there seem to be lots of widgets that come close to it.
Never thought I'd leave HTC, but the day is getting closer!
