Hi, can anyone confirm that the built in gps only reports the current position? I use tomtom 7.450 and on my diamond in the gps configuration page it would indicate satelite number, position (both in the top right circles) and signal strength for each satelite (grey/blue bars at the bottom).
My HD2 with 1.48 does not report any satelite data (at least not to tomtom), but only the position east and north. Can anyone confirm this? And is there a way to get satelite "debug" output as well?
Thanks...
EDIT: Seems to be an issue with that particular version of tomtom only.
hi mcseven,
im using tomtom7.45 as well and im getting the same results. i think you are right in your suspicions. the gps probably only outputs lat (N/S) and long (E/W). not just N and E.
the last time i used a BT gps receiver from Holux and that gave me satellite info + gps data but i felt that the lag from the BT connection was a pain and as such still use the internal gps.
what do you intend to do with the satellite info anyways?
I get the same sometimes with leo but never had the problem with Raphael.
I saw a thread discussing this issue a little while back, but I can't remember the exact cause.
I DO remember though that it is an issue with TomTom, and nothing wrong with the GPS functionality.
For example, if I run TomTom, it will locate my position, but not show an satellite connections. However, if I run CoPilot, that locates my position and shows how many satellites I'm connected to and their signal strength.
Sorry I can't remember what the agreed cause of this was, but it was definitely NOT the GPS in the phone.
hi,
i think its a tom tom thing, because if u get gps position you also get satelite data. i do a quick test with igo, copilot, visualgpsce and gpstuner. the are all showing the number of sat's, there position in the sky and the other stuff.
regards mad.
I use TomTom 7.910 and it works normally...Displays both signal strength and satellite just as before. So it's either a pb with your version of TomTom as others suggested or with your ROM.
Thank you all, I also believe it to be an issue with tomtom 7.450 only. Navigons shows sat. data as expected, and the NMEA output confirms this. So I'll simply upgrade tomtom. Thanks again...

Does anyone know or is it possable that the MDA is capable of running a GPS? I tried to put TOM TOM on it, but it kept saying can't find any maps. Has anyone had any luck in trying to put one on thier device?
I have a bluetooth GPS receiver and have TOM TOM on a storage card and it runs great. The maps cost money and you can manage them through the TOM TOM home application on your pc.
I have IGo installed and use an Asus BT GPS receiver, works fine.

Most people use Bluetooth GPS receivers for this kind of thing. The wizard does not have a GPS radio in it though, so you have to use an external GPS receiver.
If you're willing to sacrifice accuracy and automation for step-by-step directions that you manually step through, try Google Maps. In addition to being a very good (and very FREE) mapping tool, it can do radio triangulation so, if you're utterly lost, it can at least show you where you are within about 2000 meters. Much better than nothing at all.
I got lost once on the way to an acquaintance's house, and used Gmaps. By typing in the street address where I was lost at, and the desired destination, it got me back on track in a real hurry. Indispensable for those without funds for GPS receivers.
Hi!
I have read the other GPS threads and cannot find a solution, but will keep searching.
I managed with help from here, to get Tom Tom working and also Garmin XT.
Both worked with the internal gps chipset well, but last night they both stopped working.
My version of Tom Tom does not have the inbuilt receiver as an option so I used 'Other NMEA receiver' with COM4 and baud rate 4800 and it did work.
In Garmin's settings, I used COM4 and it worked.
Now both do not work. The Tom Tom just waits for a connection and Garmin shows a panel with Awaiting better GPS Accuracy
Both programs do work if I use an external Navman B1- Bluetooth receiver.
I have also tried PortSplitter but that does not seem to work either.
Any advice appreciated !

Sorry dude, I can't help you out BUT I have noticed there's a fairly newish version of Garmin XT out now

some people may not have noticed
Thanks !
that's the one I am using or rather I am not using but want to use

sorted now....

There is a program called GPS Info.
Try to find newest one or use mine from att (it works for Trinity).
It should test GPS.
thanks nimnull!
I am trying now...I do have an app called GPS Test but it doesn't display all of the screens of information. Did so on the Kaiser by using the scroll wheel.
Yes, it works thanks ! I am not sure what all of the numbers mean but I can guess
Ofiaich
More important, that GPS Test should make GPS "fixed".
Hi!
I can see, at the bottom of the screen, [setup][GPS Info] and can see activity but I am not sure where to look for "fixed"
I have not checked the boxes for VTG WAAS or PowerSave
Sorry to be slow
Ofiaich
GPS Test has to write that GPS is fixed and show your position.
If you still have Kaiser you can check there.
Mine GPS in Trinity doesn't work anymore
Hi again,
on my Kaiser, the screen downloads lots of data then stops. i.e. it does not keep on scrolling...like on the HD,
In the GPS Info view, it shows the satellites positioned in the concentric rings, but not figures for the lat: lon:
the date shows as 1601/01/01 So about the time the first Englishman set foot in Japan
so I now check the boxes for VTG and WAAS and the GPS Info now shows
2008/11/13 and also my location.
Back to the HD, checked the VTG and WAAS and date was same as for Kaiser but now has updated. Position updated too.
Screen on HD cuts off the right side of the data. so need some screen rotating utillity
Ofiaich
If GPS Info shows your location - it means that GPS is fixed and works OK!
Hi!
with the he boxes for VTG and WAAS checked, it does !
Thanks very much !

is xperia GPS-a or GPS built-in ?
thanks
Lamberto
GPS
And the locking is extremely fast
X1 has a built in A-GPS.
I'm not sure why that's important if it's the one or the other...
The X1 has both; GPS and a-GPS
GPS is the normal GPS using signals from satellites. A-GPS uses the telephone pole signals to locate your position. GPS is more accurate than a-GPS but a-GPS is faster.
Update the satellite information using the included QuickGPS application and the locking is even faster. Mere seconds to get a lock.

Not entirely true!
"Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS, enhances the startup performance of a GPS satellite-based positioning system." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-GPS
There are several a-GPS solutions, but those used in pocket pc-s use the GSM or UMTS network to download the almanac data from an assistance server, thus reducing the fix time for the GPS receiver.
So let's be clear: GPS and a-GPS are NOT two different receivers, therefore a-GPS is not less accurate. a-GPS is an enhancement of GPS, and it is commonly used in all pocket pc phones or smart phones equipped with a GPS receiver.
The GSM cell based positining, what you are talking about is used mainly by Google maps, and can be applied on any smart phone without the need of a GPS receiver. The accuracy is very low. This positioning method does not have anything to do with GPS satellite based positioning system.
Anyway it's funny how every post about gps people always argue that agps is internal simple gps but can also be assisted by network. All say the same thing basically but with different words
anyway im soooo happy with the gps of X1
Is the best ive ever seen. and i had n95 8gb tytnII and diamond.
Hardware
Does anybody know the actual hardware used for the gps receiver i.e. SiRF III or something along them lines.
Cheers

qualcomm GPS one is what it uses.

Excellent cheers for that..
Recently obtained a HTC HD locked to orange network with stock radio 1.09.25.14. Updated to radio 1.17.25.09 using uspl.
Previously Tomtom setting is to use "built-in" GPS and Garmin uses "Serial GPS". After the update no GPS signals displayed unless you set TomTom to use "Use other NMEA GPS" and Garmin to "Intermediate Driver".
With the new radio, Tomtom locks onto gps much quicker and show higher signal strength (tested inside house!) but Garmin show a slightly lower signal strength (subjective opinion).
Hope the above will help others and comments most welcome.
That's strange
I use radio 1.17 and tomtom says it's using internal gps.
I guess it depends which version of Tomtom you have, because mine (7.910) seems to auto-detect the gps no matter which setting its on, internal gps or nmea other device. I agree that the latest 1.17.25.09 radio is the best though, as locking on is really quick and does work in buildings nicely.
Hi there,
I'm terribly newbie with Jade, so sorry........
I have installed TomTom navigator 7 but GPS doesn't work (I cannot fix sats).
Which GPS must I set in TT configuration?
- integrated GPS receiver
- cabled receiver
- other receiver GPS NMES
And what about com port??
thanks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=481671
see in this post
integrated GPS receiver is the one.
When testing, dont expect it to work indoors...
Thank you, that's right for the internal receiver.
Now I've got another problem: I cannot see the sat bar during navigation (I can see the bar but it's empty - no sats locked, even if TT is working right) and I cannot see locked sats in GPS status menu.........
Moreover, when I select a destination if I press "C" letter (only C, with other letters everything is ok) TT stops working and I must reset it.
Can you help me please?
My TT version is 7.450.9028
Thank you
Hi,
try the version 7.915.9196, it works fine on my Jade without problems
