sms to mms... - Nexus One General

Seriously, this is getting beyond a joke. I thought this problem was solved back with the G1...
I can't believe that after all of this time there is no option to disable auto-mms conversion.
And before anyone comments: I have looked through google; It is NOT a problem with my network, or violation of any other UK network; I have sent much more than 3 or even 10 stringed sms's on winmo and iPhone OS. It is 100% Android, and I would like a fix without installing a new messaging client (nothing supports the N1's resolution).
To be honest, I wouldn't mind disabling outgoing mms since it's completely obsolete; I email something if I want to send a picture and I thought Android was made to promote data usage, not prehistoric phone methods.
If it's what it takes, I would disable it altogether.
On the odd occasion (like once or twice a year), I may receive an mms, but I have never, in my entire life sent an mms. What is Google's problem? Do they live in the 90's?

Have you tried removed the MMS setting from your APN in the settings?

Sounds like an advantage to me.. Nokias do that too if you type a message too long for SMS. What's the problem? Your message arrives at the other end correctly.

I removed the MMS settings and it hasn't said "converting to mms" after 3 sms's. I suppose that means it's working
Thanks.

Yeah but I have unlimited sms texts so MMS is automatically a minus for me.

replace the standard messaging app with handcent sms. it's probably my only must-have app on android and it has that option.

Resolution's too low i'm afraid.
I've only just got away from the iPhone messaging client

resolution of...the icon? everything else is properly done. but if that's your thing, then yeah, the icon looks slightly blurry. wait for an update in the market i guess.

Yeah all of the edges are pixelated.
And I want to get rid of the iPhone messaging client because with only using half of the screen, I don't get as much message on as when it uses the whole width.
I guess I'm a bit bored of the iPhone now and I'd like to mess around with android for a bit first.

Are there any other mms hacks than the one over at ppcgeeks?

I was wondering if there were any other mms hacks that work on the mogul other than the widely known one at ppcgeeks, cause it only works when it wants to and I would like to try a different one.
Lately there have been server issues where it just doesn't want to send any picturemails... heh, seems like Sprint is try to crack down on it
yea, and that sucks cause I tend to send alot of pics to other peoples cell phones that dont have email on their phones, or dont know how to use it.
well I figured something out!, I turned off my data conection and turned on my wifi(thanks to my wireless antenna) and triend sending again and it went off without a hitch! Damn Sprint!
Hmm, I don't even have MMS in my Mogul Inbox apps, only Text Message, Outlook, and my email account. How do you guys send MMS then?
IN my Cingular 8525, I have MMS in the Inbox apps.

I found a workaround/fix that has it working.
Change you DNS from Sprint's to Open DNS.
see : http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...et-access.html
Then it should work every time.
here use this thread, it works.

mms works fine for me, had to softboot twice but always had to softboot twice with wisebar on my 6700, out of curiosity why would sprint want to prevent you from sending picmail when you are paying for power vision? "seems like Sprint is try to crack down on it"

Wow...can't believe that I missed that!!! Thanks a bunch!
What about Alltel's ROM... they offer picture/video mail on their 6800s... can anyone extract the cabs out of it??
I don't know about anyone else, but the MMS app seemed to really slow down my phone... sometimes the messaging application would freeze up entirely when it was installed!
So, I found that at least for Sprint users, you can send an email to <phone number>@pm.sprint.com, and it will show up as an MMS message on that user's phone!
This is a much more robust way to send pic mms, and my phone is much happier now without the MMS app.

they are not cabs to extract, it is not installed from the extended_rom but instead part of the ROM.
if someone else knows what files and regs are needed i could extract them and build a cab. i had considered trying to track them down and/or pulling out files/regs used in the mms cab from ppcgeeks. i could try this but i have a feeling the mms builtin to alltels has stuff all over that would be hard to track down.
it is arcsoft mms though just looks like a diff version. installing the ppcgeeks arcsoft mms cab on alltel does not produce working mms and this is part of my feeling that this version is layed out quite differently.

This is the exact same thing I experienced with the mms cab from arcsoft. My phone was sluggish and whenever I tried to go into my text message shortcut it would take up to a minute to load up.
I'll go without for now too, until we can find a way around this.
This is the OLD WAY
I use the old MMS Cab file from Verizon 6700. It's very simple to make it work. First install the Cab , then the cab text menu. after the soft reset, just go into the Arcsoft files registry and change the Enableserveredit ot 1 , default is 0. Once that is done, go to the MMS config and change to sprintpcs and the address also to sprintpcs. then thats it. This is just a brieft description if anyone wants to try it.
If anyone want me to attached the file and go step by step, just post the reply here and i'll get to it. Reason is because i don't know if everyone knows about it or not, so i won't waste time posting the files.
You will have an MMS in Messaging, YOU can send it from there, but when you received MMS pix/video it is received in the Text Message account. Basically this MMS account enable you to send MMS pix/video and receiveds then in your Text Messaging account. When receiving MMS, it will send you a link to the pix/video directly. I know on the Alltel, it takes you to the sprint messaging website and you have to log in to see pix/video. The setup above as i described, takes you directly to the pix/video and do not need to log in.
FYI:....send MMS using phone numbers not e-mail addy
Right now after doing the resolution hack, my MMS won't send out, giving me an error that says my image size of 16k or whatever is over the 0k limit? I can change my resolution to the lowest setting and it's still giving me the same error.

MMS not being received by another

I sent a picture message many times to my friend and she never received it. I tried it on hanscent, chompsms, and the original messaging app and she hasnt received it. I'm on tmobile by the way. Is there a problem going on right now with the mms department?
I'm having an issue receiving MMS on my N1 on Vodafone in Ireland. I won't receive them at all even thought I have entered all the correct settings!!
Cheers,

yes it is rooted to cyanogens 5.0.4.1 i flashed it about 3 times.
i had to change certain settings to be able to send mms to iphones....
I've had issues sending mms on my unrooted n1.
I think it has something to do with the photo size (despite being compressed for mms) if i send a regular picture (always on highest resolution) the report stays on pending until failure. however if i use something like ezimba and reduce the file by say 30% it's received almost immediately...
not sure if this is the cause or not, but that's the work around i've found to get it to work...

what settings? i'm having trouble sending pictures to iphones (3gs) too.
Picture size must be under 300k (this includes the text message).
There is a setting under handcent that lets you specify the maximum size. By default it is 500k.
Change that setting and it may work better for you.

If i type longer than 3 smses it converts automatically to mms?!

Does anyone also have this problem?
Whenever I type a message that's longer than 3 smses, the phone automatically converts the sms into a mms message?
I just find it weird coz my old nokia phone can send up to 11 smses without converting to mms automatically.
Yeh, i tend to blab on in my messages =P
Any help would be appreciated!!!! THx!!!!
yeah.. it's meant to.. on the assumption that 1 mms is cheaper than 3 sms..... but you can switch it on/ off (in Handscent..) not sure about std msg app..
this unfortunately can't be changed in the default messaging app, but handcent does handle this well
ooo THX GUYS...awesome!!!! i'll try it out ^^

WHAT?! Seriously?! Goddammit. I can send 3000 sms' per month. And MMS' are pretty expensive in comparison. Urgh, this is VERY strange. Oh well, I guess it'll have to do. I really love the messaging app!
Edit: I tried Handcent. And it's really not for me. I think the standard messaging app looks way much better. Too bad since Handcent has some pretty good settings.

Messaging app is completely terrible

I purchased an evo for both me and my wife. A friend of mine did the same as well. It seemed like a good deal at the time and the phone seems to be good quality overall...
However, when messaging back and forth quickly, messages disappear from the thread and cannot be seen in any way. All that I receive is a notification. This has happened for all of us. Messages are also often received in the wrong order.
Would the situation be any better if I was using plain android instead of the buggy sense UI? It looks like the froyo rom is making good progress.. I'm going to try it, but if it's still as buggy as it is stock, Sprint will be getting 4 EVOs returned.
Try another messaging app like handcent or chomp. You have choices.
No problems here, and I'm on my 2nd Android phone. Both have worked great with no problems such as yours.
Seems like more of a rant then a request for help. that being said, my family has 5 Evo's between us and we have had not one complaint with the SMS. possibly sprint service in the area? i know when i'm in smaller towns the sms seems to lag, almost like its stuck in queue somewhere before being sent to me.
good luck mate!
Use Handcent. Problem solved. The stock app is slow and sucks.
If you hate it, go back to the iPhone where you obviously came from?
Now to try to find a question to answer within all that complaining....... hmmm... oh yes, I'm having issues with the SMS coming in odd orders occasionally. I did not ever experience this with my Hero.
So what I can derive from that is that this particular release of Sense, which is NOT Android, has a bug. You need to differentiate between the OS and the VERY deep reaching Sense UI that HTC puts on top.
I'd tell you to wait for the ROM development to pick up, but something tells me you're not a tinkerer. The iPhone is a fantastic phone.. you just can't tinker as much as you can with Android. So with Android you'll have choices but you'll have bugs. It's just something I come to expect.
It's like running Linux. Sure it's trendy to hate Microsoft, but holy hell there are a lot of problems with Linux apps in design, UI, and in general stability (Note, I didn't say Linux has problems.. I said apps. Because it's the crap on top of the underlying system I have complaints with). I still love it, I just have to approach it with an attitude that it's not going to be as polished as OS X, and it's not going to be as stable either.
Welcome to Open Source and the stuff people put out with it.
After hearing everyone praise handcent I decided to give it a try myself and wow is it better. Choice is very nice

Edited to remove ranting, I'll give handcent a shot. Hopefully it doesn't lose random messages =(.
I've gotten some messages out of order, but that's about it.
If I try Handcent and somehow don't like it, is it easy to revert back to the original built-in messaging app?

Just make sure you disable notifications in the stock app so you don't get double notifications. That's annoying.
Also, I haven't had any problems with MMS while using Handcent.

Thanks, I totally noticed that too. But it looks like if I disable notifications in the notification bar then it doesn't let me make sure it plays a sound.
Does handcent control that on its own so it doesn't matter if the sound is disabled on the stock messaging app?

Yea I have that problem alot I usually use built in messaging for MMS and handcent for all other SMS. I never have a problem receiving MMS with handcent just sending.
I prefer chomp, and have had no issues. well maybe one, or two texts out of order. Like if the sender typed a "two page" text and sent, then sent a short text the short one might come in before the second half of the "two page" text.

I ran some tests and I can send over 3g it's only when wifi is enabled. So I did some research and found out sprint only sends MMS over their connections. The default messaging app will bypass wifi and use 3g to send mms. Handcent had patched this for the Hero.
I'd like to put in a plug for ChompSMS. I hadn't used it before, but people were saying that it automatically resizes your pictures when sending MMS. Maybe this isn't a problem on the Evo, but it was on the Hero. I will occasionally get a text out of order if someone sends me a long one that is broken up into more than 2 messages. But, I really like it's interface better than Handcent, which I have also used. As far as I know, I have never had a text go missing when using Chomp.
Android is all about choice. It's really nice to have all these choices and these are FREE (as in beer).

A better text messaging app?

What is a good ad free text messaging app? I used to run MIUI and LOVE their texting ap. But MIUI isn't working right for me now so switched to CM11. And while I like it the lack of a good text messenger sucks.
I send lots of MMS messages because of work, and I have 3 different gmail accounts logged in on my phone, and while hangouts is boarderline ok, the fact that I get sign in issues because of the two accounts I don't use hangouts with and then the fact that I have to select what account to send the mms over, it's just a pain, and not nearly as smooth as I think it should be, or that it was.
I have tried and tried to find the APK for the MIUI texting ap so I could just install that, but I just can't find it.
Please help me find a suitable replacement. I don't mind paying the few bucks for it, but it has to be worth it without being all bloat ware, I don't care if it has 9999 different emoticons. I just want to be able to text and send good resolution MMS.
Thanks,
PS, being able to schedule text messages would be awesome too.

If you're a Uber-texter,
Sliding Messsaging Pro:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.messaging_donate
Evolve is okay, But it's essentially a pared down version of Sliding Messagin Pro (even made by the same people)--except for the funky UI. It looks nice, but it's wonky to use:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.evolve_sms
Handcent is another beloved SMS app…It's been around for eons and is a favorite around here. It's got every feature a bacon-loving man could ever want…but it's butt ugly:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms
Go SMS Pro -- Essentially on par with handcent. But it has a downside. Even though it's one of the most customizable of the bunch….it takes hours to configure, and even then, just like GO Keyboard, it loves to place big buttons in places you don't want them, and it hides obscure details and features deep within the config and settings….which means that you'll find random numbers and other metadata in your inbox, not really understand what they mean, and then you'll spend the next 20-30 mins trying to figure out how to get rid of them. While this is probably the most-heavily-themed of the bunch, the themes are almost universally garbage. They're unpolished-- the whole lot of them. It's nearly impossible to find a theme that actually skins/themes absolutely everything. Dev's choice of colors, graphics, design is questionable at best. Lastly, the GO Dev team's relentless drive towards integration means that any day now, your app will update and you'll suddenly find out that your SMS app is now your dialer, your lock screen, your camera app, and your flashlight app. Oh…and they'll want you to pay for the "prime" version of every one of those apps-- with GETJAR Gold.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms
Other options:
Hangouts now integrates SMS into your Hangouts inbox.
ATT Messaging App-- will integrate voicemail, SMS, MMS, and a few other things like account notifications into a single box for you…which is really, really nice…but the app is also really, really ugly.
There are also apps like SMS Popup which will give you the chance to respond to an incoming message via a notification action or popup.
Lastly, you can just find a AOSP SMS app, configure it, and then theme it with XPosed's XTheme.
Good luck.
