custom alarms? - Nexus One General

on my G1 i was able to record something via a voice recorder app (it saved as .3gp) and place that file into my sdcard/audio/alarms and the alarm clock would pick it up as something that could be my alarm.
it doesn't do that for the n1, but the other notifications/mail alerts/ringtones all show up. any ideas why the clock doesn't pick it up from the sd card?

First, I'm not sure about that format, so I can't help with that. But did you place the file in /sdcard/audio/alarms/?

Doesn't it need to be /sdcard/media/audio/alarms? Pretty sure it does.

it didnt matter where for me, as long as a usable audio file was in a folder called "alarms", it'd show up as a choice on my G1 - no "media" folder or anything else needed, but it would work inside the media/alarms folder, too.
Haven't gotten that far on my N1 yet... I can't stop just staring at the screen.
This thing's a true work of art... I've had it for 2 full days and I'm still in such awe at the GUI and screen that I haven't done something as simple as adding my own ringtones/notification tones/alarm tones, etc...

muting

Hi. Im having a problem with my T-mobile MDA but using a cingular sim. Using prepaid account. I want it to go all silent, so when i use it in class, theres no sound.
I've turned the volume to off but whenever I send a text message theres a sound that plays right after it sends. I have turned all the sound in the settings/sounds and notifications folder and unchecked all of the boxes in the sound and notifications tab. right after that i tried sending a text message again. Again, I get this message from cingular telling me how much money i still got on my account, and it plays a sound along with it. I found out that its the "Notify" sound. so I went back to the notifications tab and selected every single event to play a different sound. After that I tried to check again and sent a text message... and the sound still plays.
've done all I try that I would know of but i cant seem to make that sound disappear. maybe someone can find out a way to fix this? maybe something to edit in the registry? Thanks much!
Bryan
I believe the only way to accomplish what you want would be to replace the notify sound with an empty sound file. I'm not entirely sure where the file is located, but I believe it was in the Windows folder somewhere.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=42022&highlight=disable+system+sounds
hmmm i tried what they said... and its weird the sound now turned into a small beep but still audible. i tried overwriting notify.wav with a no sound file and but it now changed into a beep. kinda hard not to get noticed specially when the whole class is quiet. im starting to have doubts with my phone. cant even go on full silent mode.
Did you replace it with:
A) simply a 0-byte text file renamed to a .wav
B) an actual .wav file complete with headers and such?
The reason I ask is because I assume if the system tries to play the file described as "A)" it will beep because it is missing the headers and isn't actually a valid .wav
i tried doing different stuff
1. making a wav file out of a text document and just renaming the file extension.
2. making a wav file with no sound using a sound recorder.
there are some things that i noticed. when i changed "notify.wav" by overwriting it with a wav file with the same name from my desktop, the sound produced changed into "Voicbeep.wav". i figured that it can only play sounds from the windows folder that cant be deleted.
so the only thing i was able to do was pick one of the wav files thats originally in the windows folder that made the least attention catching, and short, (ones that cant be deleted), copied it to my desktop. then renamed it to Voicbeep.wav since it was the sound being played ever since i messed with notify.wav. its less annoying now... but still audible.
sucks that this phone cant be turned fully silent.
Unfortunately, I'm not on prepaid so I can't reproduce your situation and try to fix it on my phone.
Good luck man, I know how it can be when a small thing that should be so easy to fix just won't go away.
its alright. at least something was done to remedy the situation. i appreciate it much aron7awol. thanks a lot
hurrah! i was able to fix it! well to anybody who gets any problems with sounds that play even if the phone is in mute mode and if that sound is found in the windows folder follow these steps to get rid of it.
things you'll need:
total commander
a no sound wav file
lets say the file i want to turn off is: notify.wav
steps:
1. on your computer rename the wav file to the name of the file you want to replace or turn silent. (this case notify.wav)
2. transfer the notify.wav into any folder in your phone
3. use total commander to transfer the file in the windows folder.
(in the thread thats previously posted, it all ends here)
4. using total commander, select the file and select properties.
5. check the system box. (i think this was the only thing unmentioned) but oh well... i think this would work good for any other system file that you want to erase
*if you dont check the system box, it will find a different system wav file to play instead*
voila! sound is replaced and wont play again
nice one mate....worked for me

Ahhh Help!! Speakphone switches on in-call!

I just got the X1 today and I've already experienced a major problem. When I call a number and it gets through, everything is normal
But if I call a number that is engaged, the engaged tone is played out via the loudspeaker and NOT the earpiece. Is there a way to change this?? Its blasting the "doo doo doo" near my ear when I happen to call someone who's engaged!!
Thanks a lot!! I can't use this phone properly until I get some help on this!
I've also had this problem, it's annoying as hell.
Has anyone been experiencing this problem as well?
this is normal on this phone, mine does the same. I've gotten annoyed of the calldrop sound and stopped it from playing via the registry.
oh... can you give me the exact file names and locations for these wav files??
So the engaged tone one and the call-drop one?
Thanks a lot!
here is the call drop registry change:
Code:
HKCR\ControlPanel\Sounds\CallDrop
Script: erase "p"
I'm not sure what you mean by "engage tone". the calldrop.wav is located in \windows\
i found the locations thanks.
Can I just delete the entry instead of just deleting the "p" from the file name??
I'm actually thinking of extracting the Busy.wav and then making it softer manually using the Audacity program. BUTTTT - I tried to extract it to a folder, but after dragging it to the new folder, there's nothing in the folder. Like it never copied across. The weird thing is that when I copy busy.wav again, it asks me whether I want to replace the original (yet invisible) busy.wav file.
Any ideas on why this happens to busy and calldrop.wav files ONLY??? The others copy across as normal. Could it be the cause of the problems to begin with??
Thanks
i'm not sure if you could just delete the "p". The "p" tells the phone to play the calldrop.wav. by deleting the p you're telling the phone not to play calldrop.wav
i haven't tried to copy the busy.wav i'm not sure why it would be invisable. what are you using to copy the files?
i found that mine will play the busy signal on the loud speaker if i dont hang up the phone in a certain amount of time. when i call and get a busy signal, it will play thru the ear piece but if i forget to hang up, it will play thru the loud speaker. i think it does that on purpose to let you know that you did not properly end the call.
just my guess tho
its a mess... There's something special about this busy.wav file. Could be a deeper problem than first imagined. Well I just used a completely different file to do another "busy" tone.
I've uploaded it here if someone wants it. Just put straight across and change the relevant registry entry in the location that was mentioned above. Makes a perfectly decent engaged tone that isnt too loud but is just audible to you.

Deleting the entry only may still play some system sound (not sure though)

The busy.wav is marked as a "System file" and hence is not visible when you copy it to your PC. On your PC, open the folder where you put the file and goto Tools>>Folder Options in the pop-up window, goto the View tab and click on Show hidden files and folders as well as uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). This should show up the busy.wav file.
having this problem too - think that reg fix only works for calls but if u get any other kind of alert it will come through the speaker

Changing the startup/shutdown media

I would like to change the startup and shutdown image and audio for the Vibrant. Does anyone know who to do this?
Thank you.
Yeah I have to plug in headphones or cover the phone when rebooting. I hate the loud shutdown/startup.
I'm pretty sure you have to root the phone first because those files are stored on the phone's internal storage which is protected normally. I really hate those sounds... I can deal with the silly T-Mobile crap...
Any progress on this?
Well it was easy enough to find the shutdown audio file,
(/system/media/audio/ui/Shutdown_128.ogg)
but I'm still looking for the startup audio file (which seems louder I think). I'll confess that I haven't really tried as I don't have much time. Anyways, you first need to root the phone (easy, and it's on this forum), then I REALLY recommend downloading Root Explorer. You can find it on the market. It costs 2.50 Euros I believe, but it's well worth it. SuperUser will ask you for permission for "Root Explorer" have permission. Just say yes. Anyways, navigate to the location above and just delete the Shutdown_128.ogg file and that's it! No more annoying shutdown song. Someone look for the start up one too cuz I don't like it. Also, the t-mo animations during startup and shutdown are located at "/system/media/video/shutdown". They are all .png files and there are about 14 or so of them, and I don't know how the phone handles them so back them up before you mess with them.
On another note, since you already have "Root Explorer" installed, it would be cool to choose your own ringtones from the available "Ringtones" options in the settings, right? To do this, just navigate to "/system/media/audio/ringtones" and delete all the crappy ringtones from there and replace with your own edited mp3 ringtones. Same goes for the notifications in the notification folder.
Still not sure how to make the phone stop playing ringtones low at first, then loud. But like I said...no time.
UPDATE
Found it. It's in "/system/etc". It's called "PowerOn.wav". Just move or delete it.
Shut up the stupid
Alternatively, if you are a haptic-only or a no touch input feedback user you could go to:
Settings->Sound & Display->System volume
...and turn it all the way down.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732311
The startup file is in \etc\PowerOn.wav
Just rename it to something else (e.g. PowerOn.wav.bak), and you won't get the startup sound.
There is also a thread in the Vibrant Dev forum about completely removing the shutdown graphic. All this is easy if you're rooted.

[BUG] Ringtone Keeps Changing

Havent been on android in a long while... and cant remember the process.
BUT how do you change your ringtones to using MP3s. I remember that you are suppose to put it in a certain folder, but which one and where in the directory.
Thanks
they go in:
/sdcard/audio/ringtones
/sdcard/audio/notifications
/sdcard/audio/alarms

Yes, there is. The storage partition is mounted as /sdcard. Just create the audio subfolder and throw your mp3s in there.

thanks... I thought I had to put it in the directory with all the original ringtones.
There's a little trick if you use winamp:
when playing the ringtone, set it as ringtone:
(I have a few humantones with a lot of curse)
Odd ringtone behavior
I've noticed an issue with my custom ringtones: the phone's ringtone resets to a default tone by itself.
I have a few mp3 ringtones and notification tones stored in /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones (and notifications). I will select the ringtone I want in settings, but after a while the phone reverts back to a default ringtone. When I go back to check my settings, none of the custom ringtones are listed. It's as if the phone doesn't see them on the internal SD card.
Most times, a reboot will clear it up; however, there doesn't seem to be any indication as to why my custom ringtone settings are lost.
I'm sure the mp3 files are OK, as I've used them before on a variety of android phones.
Has anyone else experienced this type of behavior? Any ideas what might cause this issue?
Thanks,
Sent from my Nexus S
Do you keep your contacts on the phone, the sim, or synced with Google? That might provide a clue.
I have had this happen before. Usually as a result of unmounting the internal storage. Easiest fix (doesn't take that long) if your rooted is to just adb push them to the rom. You can do it on a stock rooted rom, then do a titanium backup and in the future it will push them to whatever rom your on. But no, to answer your question, I'm not sure what causes it but it's easier to just push them once and forget about them since they take up so little space.
Everything is synched with Google.
I'll try the root and push to rom solution.
Thanks

i have the same problem, and everything's synced to Google as well. Every time I mound my SD and unmount it the ringtones get mixed up or reset.
Looks as if the internal sdcard is unmounting automatically. When I lose my ringtones, looks as if I can't launch any apps I've moved over the sdcard. Strange.
Ringtone problem...Changes?
I don't know if i'm just drinking too much or if it's doing it on it's own but does anyone notice that the ringtone changes to a different one every day? I Use my own MP3 and they are no longer than 30 seconds but every day, it will set itself to a different tone....hmmm
I have noticed that I also notice that my SMS tones also change and this has to do if and when I actually connect to the USB and mount the USB.
Same here.
There seems to be a slew of issues with this phone, of which the list seems to grow by the day. It's a huge deterrent.
Is it my imagination, or are there more issues with this release than a typical phone release? It really supports what I believe was a rushed product by Google/Sammy.
i love the phone no doubt but the ringtone thing bugs me a lot. i can never tell when my phone is ringing. i been using the same tone forever.....30 days to return it if purchased at full price....thinking thinking thinking.
I have the same issue. Well issues being reported. I like the phone, for this being my first dive into Android but damn. I think this might be more of a FAIL then the N1.
I'm really thinking of returning it to Best Buy. But what phone to get? Stock Android is awesome and with fast updates it is a toss up.
Anyone else having the issue with wanting to ditch it but yet what other phone on the market will be stock android?
Well at least we all have a few more weeks to think about it.
heard someone say that the 2.3.1 update fixes it
[Q] ringtone folder?

[Q] Changed from IPhone 5S to Samsung Note 3 n900aucucnc2 on 4.4.2 and need some help

OK to start things off this is going to be a long list of questions/issues and various impressions, some opinionated and some fact. I've had apple phones for years and appreciate both, I changed because my iphone couldn't do some things my note 3 can do such as open up 200+ MB pdfs with relative ease, but then again the samsung struggles to do simple things the iphone did fresh out of the box. This is not meant to be a discussion of which is better but it would help to know what I'm comparing it to and how I think simple things should work. I use a PC just FYI.
1.) Data Transfer of large files from various desktops to the Note 3 either through internal memory or external sd card.
My first issue is that I cannot move large files from my internal memory to my sd card. The sd card in question is a sandisk 128gb but have also tried to few others just to make sure it's not the card. If I download a large file on utorrent such as a 720p movie or better, I cannot move it from internal memory to sd card. I just won't do it. Not only will it refuse to move large files but any photos are sometime hit and miss, sometimes it moves them with no issue at all, most of the time the files stay in the parent folder and don't end up in the destination folder. I can move various files if I connect it to my desktop and drag and drop them onto the sd card but sometimes moving the file corrupts it where it cannot be played on the phone. I've also tried this with numerous computers with the same result. to move files on the phone i go to my files, select the directory and then select the file I want to move. I hold down on it to select it and then press move, it then shows the internal and external storage options, i select the sd card and the folder I want the file in and then press move here in the top right hand corner. If there is another way let me know.
Second issue is when dragging and dropping large music files directly to the sd card or internal memory from a pc. If a drag and drop a FLAC album it corrupts it about 50% of the time. I routinely go to play the album and get the message that it does not support the file type or something to that affect. I often just delete it and redo the process, most of the time that works. On MP3's, if I drag and drop an entire discography of an artist (say 8gb or so) it's corrupted 100% of the time. When I go to playback the albums they play at double speed. I have to go back and drop them one by one and sometimes (but rarely) that has the same issue.
2.) Audio Playback/Microphone/Headphone/Bluetooth Issues
Firstly, I thought that all 3.5mm headphone jacks were on a standard. I did not realize that the note did not come with headphones and that the headphones that I used with an apple device would not fully function on an android device. This seems like something so simple it shouldn't even be an issue. All of the headphones, earbuds, etc I have that have inline controls do not adjust the volume or skip tracks on my android device. You name it, like a half dozen brands. It just doesn't work...
When trying to use talk to text for a text message either with headphones with inline mic or with a Bluetooth headset it does not use the microphone on the accessory device, it uses the internal phone mic which is an issue for me. So instead of using the mic right next to my mouth I have to hold the phone up to my mouth in loud places. I don't know any way to change this...I couldn't find it in any settings.
3.) Lockscreen (I don't know how this is supposed to work, I looked it up and I'm assuming its something I'm doing.)
I want my lockscreen to be simple but I cannot seem to get the weather off of my lockscreen. It does not appear unless I swipe down and there it is. How do I remove it? If I open up the lockscreen editor by swiping from left to right its not there. I only have one lockscreen page so I don't know whats going on.
When I have notifications on my lock screen and click on them it puts a box around the lower part of my lock screen where you normally swipe as to say swipe here stupid to unlock. Is that the case or am I missing something else? It seems as though if my phone doesn't have a security lock on it and I press on my notification it should just open it. Or is it intentionally non-intuitive for some other reason?
4.) GLITCHES!!!!!!!! Various other issues
Routinely my music apps gets stuck on a page. Say if I'm listening to an album and try to back it up to my list of albums it just loads the same page over and over again. I have to hit my homebutton and open up the music app again from the icon and sometimes that causes it to crash. It does this on the stock Samsung music player and on play music. Normally my phone plays music 24/7 so it may be just how much I use it for that purpose.
Apps crash on a regular basis, at least a few times a day. I'd say I have an app crash maybe 3-5 times a day on average. Some more than others. Because of all the glitches I did a factory reset weeks ago to see if there was another issue. I've also tried uninstalling and re-installing all the apps that normally crash but that hasn't seemed to help. I don't believe apps used by millions on other android devices such as Bank of America (crashes literally every time I use it) or Pandora could be the problem.
Google integration is sketchy at best, It routinely doesn't delete e-mails off the google server when I delete them off my phone. It's really hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it will load the same e-mails dozens of times even though I've deleted it daily. The google+ photo backup is hit and miss and even updates over cellular even though its set to only update over wifi when plugged in. All of the sync settings seem appropriate for what I want it just doesn't work.
Text scaling under most situations is completely absurd. I've got 5.7" of screen and have to re-scale practically everything that loads so I can read it. This is especially and issue when reading forums which I'm on frequently. Is there a way to change this? If there isn't there definitely should be! Not a glitch but an issue.
All social media apps that load from a page (a wall, forum, feed, whetever) always reload when I click on something and go back forcing me to start over from the beginning. I've only had this issue on this phone, my previous iphones just take me back to where I was. Is there a way to change this annoying problem?
5.) The Photo Gallery
It just doesn't work. I don't know any other way to put it, its the second biggest failure on the phone. i wouldn't trust it with important anything! It routinely just looses photos, online account's don't update at all, s health photo that I've deleted dozens of times keeps showing up in my photos, all my album covers end up in my gallery and I have to manually go back and delete them all, photos end up corrupted and not able to view them whether on sd card or on phone, it goes on and on. Is there another application I can use? Can I make another app my default gallery app? Some online photos like picassa/google+ don't load correctly, it'll show the preview photo and when clicked on it'll show a completely different photo from that album. I would just delete it but can't delete online account photos from my phone gallery app and when I delete them online it doesn't update it on my gallery.
6.) Voicemail
I recieved a voicemail the first 10 minutes I had my phone and clicked on it in my notifications and it called my voicemail. I was confused at first, was i holding a 700 dollar phone or 90's Nokia? Seriously? And on top of that it didn't come with ATT visual voicemail out of the box, I had to download it. WTF! No I don't need voicemail on a phone I need 20 other google apps instead...seriously? On top of that att visual voicemail app is crap. I routinely miss voicemails because it not reliable enough to show all my voicemails in my notifications. Is that how all android devices are? I may be a little spoiled by the voicemail being on a tab in my phone app but it seems as though if there is an att specific model this should work better than it does...
7.) Text messaging
I don't use the stock mesaging app because it wouldn't reliably send a photo...that is all. I use textra now and it works better but still isn't what I would consider to be reliable...
8.) General Gripes about the phone app
The buttons are so large it looks like its designed for the seeing impaired.
Color scheme looks like I'm 4 and trying to push blocks into the appropriate holes...
I can't figure out how to change the color scheme on it, can you change it?
I hate the cartoonish figures for people that don't have photos.
Okay, it generally looks childish or like it was designed by Mattel. I need something far more professional looking.
On a positive note, speech and handwriting recognition is second to none, S Pen apps and S pen integration in general is very refined. It's extremely fast with very little lag in all situations. There are lots of positives so I'm not downing the phone at all but it just needs to fit my needs better. That's not everything but a good start. Thanks for your time and patience.
And to sum it all up, I think you should go back to i... :sly:

First - ur post is too big to even read.
You are in xda and there is ton of information here. If you search , u will realize that most of the issues have solution...
When moving from another OS its always difficult but stay and you will love it.
Let me rephrase, it's not an android problem that I'm aware of: is my phone ****ed up and in need of replacement our does every note 900a cnc2 do this stupid ****?
The new os doesn't seem to be an issue this is mainly a hardware issue unless you're saying all android phones corrupt photos straight out the box. Which I know that isn't the case.
Some of my gripes are android related but mostly sounds like a hardware issue.
Try moving the large file using "my files", 3rd party file manager cannot move file from internal to external sd (a limitation introduced in kitkat).
Also try copying your music collection using card reader.

I've only tried my files to move it on the phone, it will not move them.
I basically have to use a card reader to copy anything over a gig or so reliably. I can drag and drop it but that doesn't always work.

Really, and you did that just fine on the iPhone? :silly: That would be quite a full miracle given how (as far as I know) the iPhone never had a SD card :silly:
Read around - if you are on 4.4 there are some new security restrictions on writing to the external SD. If you are on 4.3 you are probably doing something wrong.

Of course I didn't, I.used third party software to drag and drop mp3's on internal storage of a jailbroken device. It worked 100% of the time.
But you're still missing the point. My files are being corrupted whether on the external sd card or the internal storage. There aren't any examples off this on my model phone on your forum...
As far as I know my files isn't a third party so it should have full access to read and write to my sd card per 4.4
That does explain why u torrent won't do it though.
Did u use your iTunes mp3 files? My girlfriend is also into that icrap and when she used my computer for music files I learned that you don't wanna use iTunes. Don't take this as a apple...uhm... disliker read about it if u don't believe it. Itunes messes with the music files and therefor I had to do my whole music storage from the scratch.
I think what @Dejan Sathanas was trying to say was: that if you are not ready to switch u will find strange issues that nobody else encounters and end up spamming the threats. For example: I haven't had any issue moving any files ever on any android device!
So long story short
1. Get the device u prefer (even if it is an apple)
2. Try some music files that didn't run through apple tech

I didn't use the ALAC files from my Apple device. I was under the impression they wouldn't play on here, just used mp3s and flacs. I tried to upload a pic of what the corrupt files look like on my phone but got an error that said could not complete this operation due to low memory. I'll figure it out when I get off work and upload them.
Took it to best buy\ATT, they sent me to the Samsung rep/dealer in store. He couldn't figure out what was going on, why it wouldn't move files, why some would corrupt, update Google anything, etc so they are sending me a new one.
