HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\MainCamSupportCapSize = dword:0x0A (10)
change to dword:0x3A (58) and you will have Large & CIF resolutions.
Dmitry
can u explain better how to do it because when i go in i cant change the dword value and its # is 10 for me

Use any registry editor (like Resco Registry Editor or PHM Registry editor) and going to the HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\MainCamSupportCapSize . Default value is 10 decimal (0xA hex). Change value to 58 decimal (0x3A hex).
I modified the registry for these values and it does seem to increase the quality but not the image size of the pictures or video.

After registry patch the L & CIF resolutions will be available in video camera mode. Try to click on resolution icon on top bar or select it in options.
the new resolutions are
L = 320x240
CIF = 352x288
which are much better than
S = 128x96
M = 176x144
thanks for the info
i made the edit and it enabled the two resolutions in the options, but when i actually tried to take a video with those settings (either large or CIF) it came out as the same low resolution it normally does, but the video quality is even worse (very choppy). is there a way to get around this?

No problem. HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Recparam\MP4Large\Bitrate
default value 128000. I chaged it to 1024000 and now video quality is better.
hey, thanks for the reply...did what you said, and picture quality is better, but video is still very choppy and still much below the framerate id get while recording in medium. id be happy if I can just get it up to 15 frames per sec at this quality.
MJPEG @ 15FPS seems to be the sweet spot with Dmitri's tweak
Thanks for this tweak Dmitry! After spending few hours testing various settings, I found that using MJPEG @ 15 FPS got me the best results in both visual quality and framerate consistency (FPS for MJPEG can be set under Recparam\AVILarge although 15FPS is the default, if I recall right). Anything higher than 15-20 FPS with high motion videos will result in erratic captures.
Note also that you'll want a fat MicroSD card to store MJPEG videos as these can become large fairly quickly.
This is an amazing reg tweak, i knew it was a matter of time before this leaked out. This camera is more powerful than whats let on and i know it
Now if only we can get some frame rate tweaks in here that work
Well I actually got the frame rate to not be so choppy by just changing HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Recparam\MP4Large\FrameRate to 5 Hell you may even be able to go lower. Because that's all I kept doin an it just seemed to get better each time I lowered it.
Changing the framerate to 5FPS for Mpeg4 yields horrible playback results. It's not even worth taking videos with the setting at 5 because of the slow, jerky movements.

5 frames per second? That is REALLY choppy, maybe you meant 15?
i've done some testing and it seems like mpg4 just uses too much processing power to do the compression and that motion jpeg (AVI) at 15fps yields pretty good results. will try and do some more testing and report back.

help
I messup. I changed the maincamsupportcaptsize and dont remeber the org setting. the 2nd problem is that i could not add change to dword:0x3A (58) it would only let me change from 8 to 58 but not the 0X3a?
Not sure if changing this messed up my MMS but I haven't changed any other feature. Right now after doing this hack, my MMS won't send out, giving me an error that says my image size of 16k or whatever is over the 0k limit?
Reseting to default
thanks for the info but I have tried that reg hack and it will stay at 58 until i launch the camera/camcorder function then i go back in and it is back at 10. don't know if i need to soft reset before i launch cam? any help would be a appreciated.

Same thing happened to me. Just uninstall your mms and re install it. It will work.
i'm using core to play flv files, some of flv files run, but most of them give me the msg "video codec (on2 vp6) not supported by the player! (0109)" is there anyway to run it, i already checked all the formats in core, and i tried gdi and direct show, anyhelp will be appreciated.
anyone please?
Coreplayer simply cannot play those videos. It has nothing to do with video output settings.

You need TCPMP GoForce 5500 Edition. Although it was not made for our devices but this edition plays FLV VP6 on my HD2.
http://www.persian-forums.com/f93/tcpmp-goforce-5500-edition-v5-26601/
thank you all for your replies, i know i can convert files, but i'm looking to not convert, so i can copy from pc to ppc with no convert issue, maybe it looks silly for some, anyway i will try Xeon idea and give it a chance hope it will work.
well TCPMP GoForce 5500 seems to open the file at least but doesnt work properly, it run like buffering, so run 1 second and stop for 10 others, then run and stop, skipping most of the frames, i tried to change some settings for buffer and other numbers with no luck, even when i tried the gdi or direct show, the device freezed, only the raw framebuffer works with this frames problem. Any idea Xeon, by the way my device is also HD2

As Xeon said.. Goforce was not made for our device and hence some problems... when a software is not made specifically for the device its really a hit or almost a hit.. it either works or it works with problems like screen aligments etc...
Discovered today that coreplayer doesn't support ac3 which means me having to convert rips that have been encoded with it.
Does anyone know of a player that supports ac3 audio to save me the hassle?
TCPMP is supposed to, although I've never tried to get it working.
not heard of that, any chance of a link? thanks
The version of TCPMP I normally use is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3275845&postcount=172
But I've no idea if that's one of the versions that supports AC3.
I had the exact same problem yesterday. I am using the version of TCPMP posted above in conjunction with the AC3 plugin from here
picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/
and it is working perfectly.

no picture also the full screen button and the play/pause button are blacked out, you have to press it to see it not bothered about that, i just want the picture!!!! help!!!
EDIT:
sorted it, had to change the setting in video to GDI, raw framebuffer works also, directdraw crashed the phone, what do you guys use?
happy now, i can use coreplayer for my music and this for my vids with no conversion and also keep both aps open for when i want to easily switch between music and video.
My preferred settings for TCPMP are dither on, smooth zoom always, DirectDraw (not GDI), DirectDraw overlay format set to YUY2, "use device stretching when blitting" checked, and uncheck "overlay with colorkey" and "use blitting instead of overlays". I imagine the same settings will work in CorePlayer, although you'll need to switch back to GDI for subtitles.

wow!! direct draw crashed my phone. Do your settings produce a better picture then, this is all a bit involved for me!
Watching some video this morning, plays ok but is a bit jerky, do you know what setting fixes that?
with the GF5500 version, you don't need to install any AC3 plugin, oif you go check the TCPMP folder in program files you'll see there's already an ac3 file in there... that cab is the complete package with the whole plugins available for tcpmp

Smooth zoom always (rather than to 50%) and activating dither improve the picture quality. The other settings improve performance. Using DirectDraw with the wrong DirectDraw settings will indeed crash your phone. This is why I have given you the right DirectDraw settings.

You can't have looked very hard!
Hit Options/Settings... then hit the Select Page soft button and choose DirectDraw. "Settings..." is at the bottom of the Options menu - you'll need to scroll down a little.

Didn't realise that menu could scroll doh!! it's a bit confusing (to me anyway) plus i've been fidling around with coreplayer and get all muddled up with the menus
anyhow, i set it to what you said, looks great. How the hell do you know all those settings?
lastly, under options, zoom, i select fill screen, you?
BIG thanks for your help on this mate, much appreciated and all that

Trial and error.
I've done a bit of benchmarking with different combinations of settings, and that seems to me to be the best combination. Using YUY2 overlays does disable a few features. If you've made corrections to brightness, contrast, and colour balance then (I think) YUY2 will bypass that - certainly the options become disabled (as does the Dither option, actually, although dithering shouldn't be necessary if you're using overlays, AIUI, because overlays circumvent the 16-bit colour limitation). You also can't use DirectDraw overlays and have subtitles, I don't think. (I've not tried it, but I've read that).

I prefer "fit best". If you fill the screen then a substantial amount of the picture ends up outside the edges of the screen, and what's left of the picture is zoomed so much it becomes incredibly soft - but some people prefer that to having black bars. (Some people are peculiar. )
Hi there
I have a question.
I have some festival movies on my HTC HD2, converted by Aimersoft DVD to MP4.
I tried to make it a 480x800 resolution, but it fails, it shows in verticalmode, and not in landscape mode.
So I tried a few of the other standard resolutions, those look good, but it shows a black line at the borders, so it doesn't use its fully 4,3 inch !
Does someone have a better alternative to convert a DVD to my HD2?
Thanks in advance!

You say you've tried 480x800 resolution but have you tried 800x480 resolution? This might be the quickest and easiest solution for you.
If all else fails, use the program developed for the HTC HD1 called MP4HD (search the forums for it). Quick, simple, easy and effective.

Thank you! will give it a try tomorrow, it's time to sleep for now (in my timezone then)
I hope it supports 480x800
i let it do a conversion last night.. it did it... the thing is that hd2 profile crops the video to an almost 1.680 crop ration instead of 1.667... so it leaves some small black bars... i do not know if it is because of the original... but it shouldn't considering that it actualy crops the video...
a 4 GB dvd made it in almost 700 MB... the video quality isn't the best... but is good....
LE: ooh.... and it doesn't know mkv,,, at lest the audio in it...

I'm not sure yet.... now i'm converting another one... this time an mkv... with dts audio... and the cropped res says is 800x480... it's gonna take some time.... it was a 7 GB mkv... it's half done... when finished i'll post back...
Try xmedia recode, its even able to convert blurays.
It has a HD2 setting option too, so no need to fiddle!
I tried some DVD files, but it's gonna maka a different mp4 file for every VIDEO_TS.
Can't I just make 1 mp4 file for all VIDEO_TS files?

In case you don't get the info you want, maybe you can convert gif to jpg.
If however you want to use an animated gif, that's another story.
I understand that live wallpapers are short vids--maybe you can transfer your gif frames to the appropriate vid format.
I noticed that there is an app on play store called Video Live Wallpaper that changes any number of video formats into a live wallpaper.
Good luck.
