Search Contacts while on call - Nexus One General

Weird.
Was just on a call but had to search through my contacts and the screen would dim out every 1 second..press the back key again too continue looking and the screen dims out again.
Any ideas on why I can't run another task while on a call because the screen keeps dimming out?

the phone has a proximity sensor like the iphone. when on a call screen will automatically turn off when you put it up to your face because the sensor sees that theres no light (unless your face is a flashlight). you probably blocked it by accident while using the phone. its somewhere on the top of the phone dont kknow exactly where though.

Ahh that makes sense. My DSLR has that as well. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah if you put it on speaker it wont do it.

[REQ]Answering calls using the Light sensor or Gsensor or proximity sensor?

I was thinking if is possible to make a program that uses the light sensor to answer calls! (when u receive a call just put the phone to your ear and auto answers). I think that would be cool!
The author of Answerkeys Disabler looked at the the usability of the light sensor - his conclusion was that it was not sensitive enough for most applications - and I would expect that to include answering calls. Have a read through that thread for more info.
I think it's a daft idea anyway - lots of situations could cause a call to be accidentally answered.

What if you had it in your pocket or jacket? And when your asleep, and you get a call, then what? Your friend can hear you snoore or having a good time, with your gf

you are right
It could check the default state. If it's dark (probably in the pocket) then wait to be light(out of pocket) and than dark again to answer(ear).
But the problem is this will not work if it's night and you are somewhere outside and there's no light for the sensor to notice... Than again the application could have a setting to be active only during daylight and after sunset it would automatically disable itself.
How's that?
IIRC, the light sensor is updated at a fixed interval. So it may not be so accurate to answer a call (eg: you put the phone to your ear but the call is answered after a bit).
Maybe it would be better to use the GSensors to capture the phone movement you made to answer a call.

About the light sensor. The thing wont measure anything above 0 if lighting is poor. I mean not only in the middle of the desert at 4 AM when its darker then my coffee, but also in my fluorescently lit hallway, in which I can perfectly read a book. So the thing will always measure 0, you cannot detect changes in that, unfortunately.
Ideea
is it possible to connect the LIGHT sensor with GSensors? (ex: based on the G force produced when you look at the phone to see who's calling an then the light sensor is kicking in, if you want to answer put it at your ear, if not turn the phone face down and it shuts the ringing off!)

something poped out in my head. When the phone rings the light comes on, is the sensor able to pickit up?
Nope. Tried this in the toilet in which the light was broken. It wouldn't get above 0. Taking a dump without lights is pretty hard by the way..

Well...I keep my phone in it's luxurious pvc htc slide out pouch, it's pretty dark in there, if the light sensor is able to detect when the phone is in the shade of your ear it must be quite sensitive or else that just would not be possible. So imagine the phone locks automatically when it rings and then unlocks and auto answers when the light sensor detects an increased light level, You would need a few options I can't think of right now, but the normal answer button should still work in case no change is detected. So if your phone was in your pocket or pouch there would be no accidental button presses/call rejections and you would not have to press a button to answer it. = killer app.
Leave your phone face down on your desk, just pick it up to answer a call.

Is that possible right now then? I'd be very interested in the software that disables the screen as soon as it hits your ear.
Can anybody help to make this app?

I don't mind donating but being so upfront asking for money is a little inappropriate in my mind but if that's what it takes let's see how many people wants it, and donate for your cup of coffee!
Sorry, my point wasn't to ask for money (allthough my post clearly indicates that, I now notice). My point was that I need a very good reason to develop a program of which I know in advance will not work as we both would like to see it work.
So there is no way to make an app that auto answers when you put your phone at your ear (using GSensor or Light sensor)?
P.S. No more ideas? Or close this thread Forever!!!!
How about an application that implements a "proximity sensor" that other phones seem to have? It's kind of annoying to have the touchscreen turned off randomly when you need to punch in some numbers for automated hotlines.

Standby during phone call

Anyone know how to prevent auto-locking/standby when talking on the phone?
The screen turns off when I'm talking, which I assume is from the light sensor, which is fine, but when I take the handset away from my ear it remains dark or is on lock.

I have the same problem since it was new. Sent it back for repair, and told nothing was wrong with it.
I uninstalled all my apps, but no improvement. shaking and tapping the phone makes the screen flash back on for half a second, but not long enough to press hang up or any keyboard numbers for automated answering systems.
I rooted the phone to see if I could get more control, but haven't found an answer yet.
first, where are you having this problem?

Proximity Sensor Help

I'm having trouble with the proximity sensor on my HD2. It works if the phone is pressed up directly on my ear, but if I move it away just the slightest, the screen comes back. Is there somewhere I can access the proximity sensor settings, and give myself a bit more room? Like, say, anything inside an inch shuts off the screen?
ROM info is in the sig, and I'm using the HTC phone dialer, if that makes any difference.

Doesn't sound like that app does anything for the sensitivity, unless i missed it. it just makes the screen stay off after the sensor is activated.
However the point of the proximity sensor is to shut off the screen so your ear isn't pressing buttons. If you've got the phone far enough away from your ear to reactivate the screen, then there's no longer a need to turn off the screen to prevent ear dialing.
If you're worried about power savings, the screen should shutoff in a minute or so, depending on your screen timeout options

correct, I haven't found a way to change the sensitivity for it, just turn it on or off. I believe the way the sensor works like a motion sensor in a store, either you are there or not... Hardware driven on sensitivity, not software.

I actually posted about the sensor in another post. The sensor is just an IR LED and a photo diode. The photo diode looks for the reflected IR when the phone is near something like your ear.
The IR LED only turns on during a phone call. Try this get a digital camera with a live preview and aim it at the 2 dots where the proximity sensor is, you'll see the IR LED light up when you initiate a call
The same photo diode is used to alter the screen brightness depending on the ambient light that hits it

This might seem like a dumb question, and I just got my MTS 2 days ago, so I'm still learning about it, but at the top of the phone, where the LEDs are, what is the function of the opposite side of where you hear your calls? Is it there for looks or does it have LEDs in there also?
it is the proximity sensor... it is what "locks" the screen so you are not activating it with your cheek while on the phone... it also blacks out the screen when you are on the phone
I've always wondered what this was too... thanks for that information.
it also turns the button lights and keyboard lights on/off at certain light levels...that way when its bright it turns the lights off and when ur in the dark the lights come on...i love it!

that seems to be incorrect because i use the headset and if i lift the phone to a certain angle the phone screen turns off, but when i tilt it back down it turns on again. i will look into this more but from what i have seen it is just there to be a little more symmetrical(would you want a phone with asymmetrical looks to it)

no hes right it IS a proximity sensor...go where theres some light and open the keyboard and see if the keylights are on...if so, try to make it brighter...(shine a flashlight at it or something) and the lights will go off...then put your finger over the sensor and the lights will come on...it works, try it...definitely not just for decoration...what you are experiencing is a perfectly normal effect of the proximity sensor doing what it does...no reason to look into it...
or download "Sensor List" from the market and look, it lists the prox. sensor and its data...put your finger over it and watch the output jump...
or run adb logcat and put your finger over it and itll come up with a entry about the light value changing...

without the headset try calling your voice-mail in a lit room and hold the phone away from you and move it all around an at different angles, you will see it makes no changes but just by putting your thumb over that spot it kills the screen and as soon as you remove your thumb it comes back on... might want to actually do some reading or testing before saying someone is wrong. not only would a quick 5 second test show that it is the light/proximity sensor, or you could try a quick google search
You can also have the left light flash for missed messages.

My nexus 4 Lollipop 5.1 Seems to have a problem when I make a call. I hit the phone symbol, select the number I want to call from my requent call list. I hit the dial button and make the call........ The problem comes when I go to end the call the screen goes black such that I can end the call. I just have a black screen........
Does anyone out there have any idea whats happening and what the fix may be?

The screen is supposed to go black when you make a call--or, rather, when you place the phone to your ear. There is a "proximity detector" along the top edge of the screen, and it detects your ear when your ear gets close. The phone then turns off the screen sensors so that your ear or your cheek doesn't push any buttons while you are talking, and turns off the screen illumination for aesthetic reasons. However, the proximity detector is supposed to cause the screen to turn back on when you remove the phone from your ear. That isn't happening for you. When it didn't happen for me, I took it to the shop. The tech said the proximity detector was broken, and ordered a new one. But replacing the proximity detector didn't help. He finally disabled the sensor so that proximity was never detected. that worked.
This story does not have a happy ending for me. The phone worked for a couple of days. Then I tried to reboot, and it went in to a boot loop. None of the standard cures for a boot loop is helping me. I doubt if the two problems are connected.

Ok, was worth a shot...
Then you must likely have a faulty proximity sensor, as stated previously.
Download an app, like AndroSensor, and see what the output for the proximity sensor reads. When nothing is covering the sensor (top left corner) it should read 5 cm/2 inch, or something similar. If it reads 0, it's busted...

I did as you suggested and the results say 2" uncovered 0 when covered
Hmm... The plot thickens...
That means you have a working proximity sensor. No idea what it could be then.

I have the same issue. In my case, the proximity sensor may have been broken or blocked by dust.
My "temporary" solution is using the power button to disconnect calls. While using a Bluetooth headset, the screen can be turned on. I hope there is a better solution.
