Hi folks, I am having alerts displayed warning me that device memory is critically low. I have tried going through all sorts of files in explorer but can find nothing to free up memory.
Any tips?
Welcome on this forum
I had the same problem with only 0.04 free memory !!!
I solved it by deleting some cache, like Opera cache...

do you happen to install a bunch of programs? Open up task manager and see how many are running in the background.

I suppose he's talking about storage memory, not about program memory..
Many thanks. I am now at 169mb / 181mb. This still seems low. What do your HD2's run at?
This is my first HTC and have got to say i love it. It frustrates me at times but then that's all part of the ownership experience I suppose.
Thanks for the welcome guys

No, I just wondered what memory was being used on your device compared to mine. Device storage
It's not the memory that is low it's the storage space so it's kind of pointless to compare it with someone else.

I went to delete cache etc from my phone but I cannot find where it is stored in file explorer... Can someone point me in the right direction?
You have to go into Opera and delete the cache from the settings in the software, the cache file is probably hidden.
mine were in [SD CARD]\Opera\Cache
I've deleted the full fodler and create again one.

I have cleared my cache in Opera and Explorer as detailed in above posts, I have next to nothing in My Documents on the device, and I have no programs running, so where is around 150 MB of my device storage being used?
I have even moved all of the pre-installed items from My Documents to my storage card. I get the pop-up message about freeing up some space quite often, each time I try something else to delete but I'm running out of obvious things to get rid of now!!
Any more ideas?
Is there a place I can go and look at the section set by for storage, rather than just all the files on my device?
facebook thumbnails, twitter thumbnails, album cache, internet cache, attachments from emails etc all could use up internal storage memory.
I had this same problem and found that it was the emails and attachments that took up all the room once I deleted all the old emails (about 70 emails in total) this cleared loads of memory, part of the problem is that some had large attachments.
Hope this helps
Move the opera cache and HTC Album cache to SD card
You can move both the Opera cache file and the HTC Album cache permanently to the storage card. Then you will find you have a lot more room in your storage memory.
Look in this thread (page 6 I think) for the cab for HTC Album cache http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=600578 and this thread for how to move the Opera cache to storage card from within Opera:config http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=601475&highlight=opera+cache

Thanks for the help, I'll give this a go later!
How come some people have lower total storage? Like the OP I have 181.23 MB total as well.
I copied the copilot folder from program files on the device onto the storage card. That saved me a pretty amount of memory
(It merges the 2 copilot folders, and you need to have to recreate the application shortcut manually, but no biggie).

I tried to install something earlier and got an error about the amount of storage available.

I've checked for large files using storage memory and they total less than 20MB...so what the hell is using all my storage mem??
I wonder if it's all being used up in like cache or something, if you use the facebook albums feature I've seen a folder somewhere where it's storing the phtotos you view I think.
Im surprised there's no option to clear the cache of downloaded items etc even if this isnt the cause of your missing space.

I had the same thing happen to me. Check your "my documents" folder. Somehow my storage card documents got copied over to the internal storage. This was not something I did. It just happened.
nope, checked the my documents folder. nothing much in there.
I can't understand what is taking up the storage space
perhaps I've found it.....I have activesync sync'd to my exchange at work, so perhaps all my emails are taking the space. All I kow id I never had this problem with my HD...I always had lots of storage available
if you haven't done too many tweaks...then a hard reset is your best friend.
I noticed a chunk of memory disappearing today and looked into it with MemMaid - I think my Albums cache (under Application Data-HTC-HTC Album-Cache) seems to have bloated in size after my browsing some pictures - there is 27mb of data in there, all with today's date. You wouldn't care if the device wasn't tight for memory in the fist place, but what the hell is the point of an album cache that's a good percentage of the size of the original files!
Two other things could also have a bearing:
Mail - unlikely, but depends on your settings
One Note files - again unlikely, but could be if you have it set to sync
so, I did some exploring and stuff..and still can't find where it has all gone

My Doc 7.6Mb
Prog Files 40.7Mb
Other files 4.7Mb
makes a total of 68.1MB
I've checked for hidden files....none...
so somewhere there is 80MB of files that I can't find!!..
I don't really want to do a hard reset, but I might have to just to see what my memory is from stock. I can't believe I've lost that much though...

You did not,but HTC did..................
Is there any solution to transfer temporary files and cache files locations to storage card? Some Opera registry settings maybe...
Yes, you can set the location of the cache via opera:config
Hi, can you expand on that a little please Gustopher? I wasn't aware that I could move the opera cache to the memory card? Can you point me the in the direction of where I could do that as I've looked around and can't find the option.
Thanks
No worries:
Open Opera
In the address bar enter 'opera:config' (nothing else, no quotes)
The Opera Preferences Editor should open
Scroll down to 'User Prefs' and click it
Scroll down to 'Cache Directory4' and edit it to read something like '\Storage Card\OperaCache' (doesn't matter what you call the folder on the Storage Card
Scroll down to the bottom of the 'User Prefs' section and click 'Save'
Confirm the prompt and you should be in business
You almost certainly will need to close and restart Opera, but I don't think you need a soft reset
Use a file explorer to check that Opera is writing to your directory
Hope this helps

yes works.
thank you.
Thanks a lot Gustopher, that's working great! It might be an idea to re-direct other stuff to the storage card too, like emails/attachments etc.. if that's possible, to preserve phone storage space...
You can certainly redirect attachments - must be done through the Inbox settings though.
However, unless someone has found a way in the meantime, you appear not to be able to redirect mail using the registry tweaks in common circulation.
For reasons I haven't yet got to the bottom of, either the mail app is quick to load or the Storage Card is slow to load on the HD2. As a result, when the HD2 tries to find the mail folder on the Storage Card it can't as the physical Storage Card hasn't been mounted yet. It therefore creates a virtual version of the Storage Card by creating a folder on the device and naming it 'Storage Card'.
When the real Storage Card is mounted a few moments later, the device calls it 'Storage Card2' and all programmes previously installed on the Card no longer work
Yes, all very technical. When you say that you can re-direct attachments you mean physically selecting where you want to save a file once downloaded or is there If there of automatically saving downloads to a specific folder without having to select it yourself every time? I hope you're with me?!!
In the meantime, if a method of saving emails to storage card becomes available, be sure to post it here if you can. Thanks for your help.
Being picky, attachments and downloads aren't the same thing. I'm talking about stuff attached to emails - if you open it and save it off somewhere else, that's a different matter.
To have your email attachments saved to the Card, open Inbox, click Menu-Tools-Options and select the Storage tab at the bottom. Tick the options that says 'When available use this Storage Card...'
Greetings everyone,
I'm new here and relatively newbish to HD2 (have it one month).
Id like to know what can I do to free some space on my device memory?
All tho I installed quite a lot of programs, I always installed them to storage card, so my guess is since device free memory is getting lower and lower
every time I check or install something, it's got to be some cache from Opera, google maps or programs maybe, temp. files from rar perhaps and similar.
So does anyone know for sure what can I delete in my device memory, in windows, etc and not damaging system...
Tried search but with no result...
i'd also like some advice on this too.....
memory depletion happens due:
- opera cache (\windows\opera9\profile\cache)
- IE mobile cache (\Windows\Profiles\Guest\cache)
- htc album cache (\application data\htc\htc album\cache) which is the greatest. i.e. if u have a alot of pics, then everytime you view them, ur album cache grows bigger and bigger and depletes memory.
My advice:
- install clear temp....it's free
- assign the custom folders in clear temp to the above folders.
clear ur cache with a press of a button. done
also everytime u install a program even if only to sd card, some files are installed on ur main memory. Only way to remove those minor files is by a hard reset. You can then assign shortcuts to ur sd card installed applications.

Put your apps on main mem and the phone will be more efficient in its overall use of phone RAM. Mem card installation does not save any RAM or really serve any logical purpose unless the app will not install to phone storage or you have used it all up.
Mem card installation slows the phone down and why on earth would you not use the main storage mem when thats what its there for?

Anything in main memory (storage mem) does not use up RAM therefore has no effect on it.

Tip 67
AND
delete google maps from main mem and make a fresh install with newest version on SD-card. This will also enable compass-direction to google maps.
Move copilot to SD-card with Resco explorer
u can try nd move ur cache folders to sd card but it all needs registry editing tweaks nd it may end up not working as for htc album cache for ex. so easiest is using clear temp my friend.

In the tips, where it mentions "moving" things to the SD card there is no "move" option so if the folder (eg "My Device\My documents\My Pictures

Of course not, I have some (I'll say advanced) knowledge in computers so I dont mix up some basic terms like this . I was thinking of Device memory (storage) not RAM. Since this windows mobile thing is relatively new to me, I wanted to know if deleting cache and temp. files does effect WM and Sense stability....

works fine on my hd2.....
I have stock ROM on my T-Mobile HD2.
Many softwares crash/hang-up with "out-of-memory" error, eg. Xn-View, Need for Speed, Kinoma Play.
This is strange..my HD used to run these without any problems. And HD2 is supposed to have more RAM and faster processor.
Really frustrated. Please help
Do you have many apps installed to your device?
When installing you get the option of device or storage card, maybe uninstall and reinstall to storage card?
Also, be sure to check out CleanRAM, that may help?
Funny to hear similar probs: I moved opera-cache, album-cache, photos to SD-Card, have 170 MB free of prog-mem and 50 MB free of data-mem and still get once in a while "not enough memory, cannot allocate mapBuf" with my aviation-navi-software (which works without this problem on my Touch HD for 2 years). With SK Tools background free RAM and the other services it happens less frequently but it still happens.
Looks as if WM 6.5 does not know where to put app-data into RAM
??????????????????
Are you using Opera Mobile 10?
With heave loaded opera mobile 10, i can't start camera at once.. but the RAM still showing over 100mb of spaces :O shame...
opera mobile is the problem for me, though i installed it to sd card today and it hasnt happened so far
I got the same Out of Memory for My Camera in my smaberg's Touch X cooked rom..
I have SEVEN push email running in the background.. it runs fine in stock..
I think it's because of the 2.10 driver things?
wondering if anyone have a solution for this?
Any solution yet?
Still have no good solution..
It seems that Opera 9 saves downloads to a folder on the phone memory, but it doesn't always delete them when you tell opera to do so in the downloads menu tab.
It saves them too: \My Device\Windows\opera9\profile\download
When I deleated most of the files there it released over 110 MB of space in the device storage.
I wonder where other programs save similar files?
Sam.
i have the same problem but guys, ram isnt rom. memory here means RAM and has nothing to do with phone storage nor sd storage
Memory usage
I do also have problems with "out of memory" errors.
I have tried to do an analyze of my HD2 with MemMaid to figure out where all the memory is used up in my device.
First of all, I have moved all cashes to the memory card and cleaned up the cashes in the phone memory, as been described well in other threads.
I have about 35 applications installed and most of them on the memory card.
This is what I have found out:
Device memory:
337Mb available , 151Mb used , 185MB free (45% used)
Device storage:
180Mb available , 164Mb used , 16Mb free (91% used)
Storage card:
16Gb available , 8Gb used , 8Gb free (50% used)
Looking at directories to see where most files are stored, windows is by far the biggest folder in my device.
The windows directory is 442Mb (!)
where 10470 files makes a total of 420Mb and other folders like programs are 22Mb.
- This is where I suspect I do have a problem, is it really normal that windows folder do have so many files? For example, there are 3017 _manila files, there are also over 3000 bmp, gif, png files.
- I have a thought that I might have inherrited a lot of files from my old TyTnII when I started up the new HD2 and synchronized it via "Microsoft My Phone".
How does it look for other HD2 users with the memory usage?
Regards
Did you save your picture on device memory? How many song did u put on device memory (ringtone for example)?
All those are stored on the memory card.
Opra cash, Youtube, ring tones, music, photos, are all on the memory card.
Regards
I have started to get this 'out of memory message' after in installed opera 10 mobile.
I dont know how to move the cache to the memory card like you could in opera 9.
I already often have a "out of memory" while trying to turn on my camera.
And... I have found a way to turn it back on without restarting : use HTAddicts CleanRAM !
Launch it, it will clean your ram (different profiles are available) and then the camera will start up.
Direct download HERE
I'm pretty sure this message is caused by one of three things:
1. Windows Mobile (even 6.5) still has a 32 process limit
2. Some older programs possibly including the camera software may not be aware of more than 32 or 64gb of memory, so even though there is tons left it can't use it.
3. There is also a cache of memory used by drivers.

my hd2 has what may be a similar issue with memory, after official 3.14 install and doing registry tweaks involving memory and graphics settings, mine is "out of memory" on Opera 9.7 all the time here within the past 2 weeks. I've gone into opera settings and deleted cache and history, no results. I can get memory warning with only 1 tab open. Any cabs I've added are on the memory card not the phone memory. I tried to follow this path to delete files, mine doesn't show the "download" file. Am trying to move Opera over to the card. I don't have any of the original games or movies on card or phone. Didn't want or need them. Other tips, suggestions?
Maybe to much programms are (in background) open?
Please close with taskmanager and try again.
btw. witch Stock rom, radio version and spl version do you have?

And which memory because you are talking about installing apps when that has nothing directly to do with operating memory.
Installing on mem card doesn't "save" anything in this regard.
I'm also low on Storage-mem on the phone - even though I install programs on the memorycard whenever possible (and of course put my pictures, music and videos on the mem-card as well!).
I have 177mb free Program-memory on the phone but only 9.3mb storage-mem.
This makes programs such as the YouTube-app very unhappy as it seems to only be able to cache to internal storage-memory :-(
On older versions of WM you could change how the phone used it's internal memory with a slider in settings.
The phone also seemed to adjust this automatically as it became necessary.
Now however it seems that this possibility is gone (both manual and automatic adjustment).
I hope it is only my ignorance speaking so here's hoping that someone has a solution to this problem (fingers crossed)

If you have used up storage mem then that's it but what have you installed to use it.
Mine shows 152Mb storage and 252Mb program memory free. 27 apps installed and everything running fine.
Do you install a lot of application from the Marketplace? If so, this defaults to install on internal memory
I have exactly the same issue, and it's very frustrating. Pretty crazy really as I can't use the phone for anything that uses device storage. No youtube, no media busy web pages and some apps refuse to run smoothly, or at all.
Like you, I'm always having to delete Opera & IE's cache files just to keep the phone functioning! I've also deleted all my Co-Pilot files on the card and the device - this helped a little and gave me another 5 or 6 MB of device space.
With all cache's cleared and around 30 programs installed (all on the card) I now only have 7.8MB of free device storage, which disappears within a few minutes when using Opera.
Out of the 336MB of program storage I have filled 153MB with 182MB free - I wish I could control how much memory is allocated to the program memory and device memory.
Very strange...I have any large applications like games, copliot etc installed on my SD card, only small apps on my internal memory...

i have a 16 meg Ram Disk (see the 'ram disk' thread ) and my system temp folders and caches, plus opera cache have been moved to it. Opera now runs really fast, and the cache is no longer taking up the storage memory, plus when you soft reset it clears out the cache too.

Wow thats so confusing!
Just tell us
Storage memory (where the apps are installed)
Program memory (where the apps and OS run)
You should have plenty of mem to install ail your apps and run them without a problem.
Try installing them all to phone because you have enough mem

I have since day 1 installed all my programs to the memory card apart from a couple of programs and hotfixes which I though would be smarter if I installed to the device - but these are tiny. I have also set my marketplace to default to the memory card and removed all co-pilot files and set all podcasts to the microSD too.
Total Storage: 200.27
Used Storage: 191.48
Free Storage: 8.79 (whohooo, that's much bigger than normal!)
Total Program: 336.93
Used Program: 143.89
Free Program: 192.93
SD Card: Over 2GB's free
I really have no idea what's using all my internal storage.
Yep - that's about the same for me.
Only a few apps are installed directly on the phone (the ones that install without letting the user decide where they want them) so what's hogging my phone-storage is beyond me...
But I really don't need close to 200 mb of program-memory, is there really no way to use some of this memory for storage - as was possible with earlier versions of WM?
Have you tried importing to PC, such as pictures and other things, using Windows Mobile Centre?

Yes but why? Storage mem is there for, well, storage. So why not use it?

I can't help but think that you've missed the point - when the storage memory is full the phone ceases to function properly!
It uses this area of storage for the cache files for the browser and for applications such as you tube. When I start the youtube app, if it opens at all, it will say 'Critically low on system memory...etc' and shut down after playing a few seconds. If I have many tabs open in opera the same memory problem occurs.
The 'Device Storage' partition is full (with what I don't know) whilst the 'Device Program' partition is almost empty. We have no control over what sizes those partitions are. Maybe i've got it all wrong but either way it's really limiting the usefulness of the phone.

yes there is. as I mentioned in post 9, I use a ram disk for my temp files and cache. lives in program memory but shows up as a (fast) memory card.
search for the ram disk thread.
also, as regards figuring out what is taking up all the space, use a file manager (don't forget to unhide all files) and search for everything over....say....1 meg.

No I haven't missed the point, I just don't get the problem and I'm trying to figure out why not?
And that would help you. Something is causing certain phones to behave this way. I use youtube and opera and never have to clear out anything.
I currently have 36 apps showing on my start menu screen and memory is showing as Storage 152.13 Mb free and program 313.80 Mb free.
I run Titanium (not manilla UI) and I have LeoLite ROM installed.
Something in that setup is causing the phone to respond differently!

u can do these things
1. instal darkcab catcher----on this website...moves all the programs to external storage
2. moves ur htc album cache and opera cache to external storage

I might be a little bit stupid, but on what website can I find darkcab catcher?
I've had my HD2 for about a week now. I've installed maybe 3 or 4 apps directly to the device (not to SD Card). I'm now in the situation of not being able to d/l any videos etc. due to having insufficient memory! I can't believe it!!!
Device total storage stands at 200.40MB
Used storage= 189.02MB
Free storage= 11.38MB
However below this info my phone is showing ''Free program storage'' as being 178.38MB. While my SD card is showing Free Memory being at 1453.95MB.
Would the solution be to transfer everything to SD card and only install to the SD card in future?
Yep I would, saves the phones internal memory
I install any non-system apps to the card, anything that needs access to the system files goes on my phone

Just go on google and search "windows mobile marketplace:choose where to install"

Thank you. That's really helpful.
These reports of low memory are really starting to bug me.
It would appear that there is something going on that is not fully understand because there is no way that you should run out of phone storage memory with only 4 apps installed!
A serious in depth investigation is needed to unearth the cause.
I have 27 apps installed and I have 152Mb of storage memory left.
Could you tell us what ROM you are running?
Did you go to the task manager and see what is running and try ending the tasks? If you don't kill programs in there they will eat up your system memory... Specially if you are downloading a bunch of porn... Opera is probably using up a bunch.

Thats not the memory the OP was talking about. Unless I've got it all wrong! Or you have!
I think you are referring to Program memory. The OP was talking about Storage memory and how something was using it up.
This is all very strange.
Things you should definitely look at
1. Where are your camera pictures and camcorder videos stored? ---> if you select device and not storage on the camera app or camcorder app settings, then u are my friend putting pictures and videos you've taken to the sdcard...
solutions: go to ur camera app settings and look at where u are storing the pictures...
or go to ur file explorer, go to ur device's memory and check if they are there...
if they are there, then copy and paste them to ur sd card...
2. set ur outlook, yahoo e-mail and stuff to be stored in sd card, not device's memory...
3. idk what else you have in there to have that very little memory left...
Oh I missed that... My phone has 686.12 Total Storage, 190.64 used, 495.48 free. I have installed all of the apps on the Storage card though. If his says that the total storage is 200 or whatever, that sounds like the problem... Should be like a gb of total device memory between storage and programs...
It seems that Opera 9 saves downloads to a folder on the phones 'device memory', but it doesn't always delete them when you tell opera to do so in the downloads menu tab.
It saves them too: \My Device\Windows\opera9\profile\download
When I deleated most of the files there it released over 110 MB of space in the device storage.
I wonder where other programs save similar files?
Sam.
Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638 for tips on freeing some space. The HTC Album cache is my biggest storage hog. Even then, like you, I have just a few programs installed to my internal store and hardly any memory left. The UK version has less storage than the USA HD2 which makes matters worse.
maybe for the euro hd2, cleartemp could help. It can help find those caches and delete them regularly.
I have the tmous version and flash all the time so I don't have that problem.
Also look for the youtube cache. I've heard it can get pretty big if you look at a lot of youtube vids.
edit: go find cleartemp. There are loads of stuff it can clear for you.
I found 10mb under thumbs.db alone.
Not to mention a few mb for google maps and for opera cache each.
you can also add custom folders to be cleaned as well. I haven't looked too much into it, but maybe I should.
Just remember that caches help your phone run faster, so don't erase them unless you need the memory.
This thread has good suggestions. But most are usual recommendations that will help but perhaps not resolve the issue completely (well a couple of posts do mention temp issues). I had a similar experience recently.
A couple of facts:
1. I install all my apps into the main memory. Never had issues. Opera, IE cache, temps all there by default.
2. I download and save on SD. Music, films, pictures, documents, Android are all there.
3. Still I have plenty of room for storage.
And then I suddenly had that warning!
The cause was temp made by the default ZIP utility that used up almost all my storage space. That utility works fine until I wanted to uncompress 160 mb zip from SD into another SD folder. It started uncompressing, used all storage temp space, gave me error, and closed. It didn't clean the temp though!
I cleaned a bit manually and then installed SK tools that cleaned my device properly and everything is fine now. It is very simple issue and similar to running out of disk space on a PC.
Bottom line: it is unlikely that usual apps use so much storage. I bet on downloads and big user files left in storage and finally huge temp files as leftovers of unsuccessful uncompressing for example.
