I started using the O2 about two years ago but realized that I couldn't let go of my Palm because of a program (MathPad). Does anybody know how to port this program to the O2 so I don't have to always bring 2 pda's with me (O2 and palm)? OR is anybody familiar with a similar program on the pocket pc OS. A short description of the MathPad below.
Aki
MathPad is a tool for solving and storing mathematical equations in standard algebraic syntax. It works just like the standard MemoPad app, except that if you write down an equation and tap the Solve button, it computes the answer and fills it in for you. These equations can be simple math expressions like "2+2=", or algebraic expressions using variables such as "sqrt(x+4) / acos(0.7) = y**3". MathPad provides operators for exponentiation, bitwise AND, OR, NOT, and XOR, bit shifts, integer or modulo division, comparisons, and Boolean logic. Functions for trigonometry (including inverse and hyperbolics), logarithms, and date manipulation are also provided. MathLib is required for use of the trigonometric functions, but all other features work on any Pilot-compatible PDA, running any OS version
if you by port mean recompiling then that very much depend on using what tool the application was made
if you just want to run the program ...

There are a couple of palm emulators for pocketpc as well.
Some work very well.

Thanks Rudegar for the link. I found the article quite interesting. Wish they had some sort of trial version for the software. Getting the ROM seem quite tricky. I also noticed that it was dated 2001... any idea on where it is now?
Thanks too Vijay,
Would you have a specific emulator you can recommend? I tried it out when I first got the O2 but it never ran and I gave up on the emulator.
use styletap to run most palm apps on your ppc

Since this has always been a "hot topic" on this forum, I have a simple question for all you Magician users.
What are the top 3 reasons you want it / don't want it for Magician.
Here's mine to start you off:
1. I don't want to be left behind
2. New Mobile 5 looks better
3. I want to be able to use charts in Pocket Excel
Let's avoid the WM5 upgrade saga again. We know we won't get an upgrade for Magician. Well, not until May at any rate. (!)
OK - Here's my why not:
1. WM2003SE is stable
2. It already does what I want
3. I can wait till I'm due for an upgrade from my network.
No WM5,
1. 2003 is stable
2. the screen is too small for specials
3. I can wait for a new provider offer (WM5 should be stable by then)
Why not WM5:
1. It's a lot slower, especially at starting programs
2. Not all software is yet WM5 compatible.
3. You have to buy the latest versions of many of your software to have it WM5 compatible. Most updates are not for free.
4. The Magician just doesn't have enough ROM to run WM5 properly
I can't think of any compelling reasons to switch to WM5 that are of a positive significance (btw, I can't count to 3):
-CF 2 works on both.
-Security signing is a pain in the bottom.
-It's slower.
-Ok it has some useful networking functions, but it loses wifi Activesyncing. WTF? Not to mention ActiveSync.
-WM5 interface, perhaps the most potentially useful idea with the softkeys, but inconsistent execution. And I have some ideas about bringing some of the benefits to Wm2003.
-I have the Magician and the Universal. I was just telling my better half about the Universal users' experience with dropping phone calls being able to answer. It's a beautiful device, but once again, what were they on?
Ok, too many others, I'm starting to http://www.ladyofthecake.com/mel/space/images/alien.jpg]sweat and convulse[/url]. Better stop for now.

With a device like the Magician where the size is more phone-ish than pda-ish, I'd be inclined to say that most people use it primarily is a mobile phone with the additional functionality of a PDA, MP3 player, etc.
I upgraded to the HTC Prophet just because I want to have the latest. But now that I had it for over 2 to 3 weeks I can say that I would never switch back to WM2003. Single-handed operation with WM5 is very easy, intuitive and practical to say the least.
And when the battery is really low, like less than 30%, I feel safer listenening to the last few MP3s, knowing that I will not lose anything when the battery goes flat.
With regards to performance, I find it suprising how people find loading prorams on Wm5 noticeably slower than WM2003. I was using my old magician yesterday and the performance is just about the same. Th onlt thing I found slower on WM5 is changing the SIP.
Plus, WM5 can do without 3rd party programs like Caller Id, Photo Contacts, etc. cause they are all integrated with the OS. For example, there were times when a picture that I assign to a contact won't show up during a call with the Magician. This never happened to me since I started using WM5. And since contact pictures are synchronised with Outlook I don't need to re-assign them again after a hard-reset.
Finally regarding stability, yes there is software that is not compatible with WM5 yet, but most of the best software is already compatible. I'm using the following software and never had to reset my PPC:
SPB Diary
Resco File Exporer 5
psShutXp
Hitchhiker
MDict
TKCreator
MS Voice Command
and a couple of games
Personally, I think it's quite a stable platform. The only thing that annoys me is that sometimes Wm5 (or the Prophet) loses the storage card after being on standby, and the media stored on it is not always immediately available. You'd have to wait those 3 sec sometimes. But this will hopefully be fixed in the next ROM update. If not, I'm still happy with the overall package
Just my 2cents!
Meh.
Hokay. Regarding WM5... I have never come across an OS that actually requires a file that YOU OWN signed by an EXTERNAL AUTHORITY instead of yourself, and that purposefully ignoring this warning to install said files doesn't necessarily mean it won't be blocked when you try to run it (goodbye backward compat). I thought this technology was strictly for web only.
Stick to WM2003, at least it has the decency to trust its own owner. -.-'

I dont understand - what situation is this coming up?
Well, I have some games on my O2 Xda mini. I tried transferring them to my sister's new Atom.
Message I got from installing was the generic 'this program is not signed by a trusted source'. I ignored it and installed anyway.
But when I tried to run it, guess what? 'Program cannot be run because it is either not signed with a trusted certificate or some files are missing. Please reinstall...'. This was from an installer works perfectly on my Mini.
Did some research, Win Mobile 5.0 will also generate this error when you attempt to execute something with a DOS parameter at the back. It also blocks stuff that do not require installation; Scummvm 8.0 was halted with the same error message. I know the latest Windows OS's have File Execution Prevention but it was never as anal and obnoxious as to go 'I do not want to let it run. So there. Nyah.'

When I was using the I-Mate Jam (Magician) I really liked the "Photo Contacts" program they had, which was actually "Caller ID 1.6" allegedly from IA Styles of late. But it cannot seem to be found anywhere. I have looked from freeware sites to pirate sites and cannot find it. I downloaded and used "Photo Contacts 4.1" for a pretty penny, but it did not allow for animated .gif contact images. I REALLY liked that. Does anyone know where this program can be found? Can any of you remove and distribute it from your phone or from a ROM?

Why don't you download it from the xdadevs FTP server? There are the ExtRoms for Magician with the cab files.
But be careful, you seem to run a WM5 device, it might not run (and force you to hard reset)
Actually WM6
In reality I have upgraded my system to WM6 Pro now and I will let you all know how loading this cab on my Hermes does with WM6. I loved this program when it was running on my Magician (which I gave away to my friend/biz partner) and have tried Photo Contacts Pro 4.yada.yada, and was not happy with THAT. Even got a refund.
Thanks a bunch Dude
Only took a minute
I found it right where you said I would and downloaded it and installed it and soft reset and . . . when I tried to asign a photo it got a headache and gave me a message about being unable to use the program for somereason.
I unistalled it from the system and did another soft reset and while I don't have menu access to assign photos, I can open the edit screen on a contact and assign a photo there.
Maybe I should reload the program again and try accessing it from the Edit screen too? We shall see.
Otherwise, I think I shall attempt installing it on my wife's Blue Angel.

what makes you think we will get an upgrade then ???
sorry n00b magician owner here only had it for a week
any tips?
Greatest 'Photo Contacts' ever
I installed the photo contacts on my wifes Blue Angel - WM2003 - and it was excellent - I only wish someone could make the same program work on my Hermes with WM6. It has the unique ability to use animated .gif images and I LOVE THAT!!!
If anyone could pull this one off I would be overjoyed. I have attached the version with which I am familiar. And if you can't make it work for WM6 - or WM5 - it already works on WM2003 really well. I have loaded it on a couple of Wallabies, a Magician with a new ROM and a Blue Angel - all with great joy in its application.
TIA,

This maybe a little off topic here, so I'll keep it brief.
I've had an X7500 for about a month, and there's a lot of things I really like about it. However, previously I've been using the Palm OS for nearly 10 years and I'm finding some things really, really, painful. Mostly WM5 related I think.
Is anyone else going through this? Can anyone recommended resources which may help?
Thanks
this is the best resource right here...
i have had a treo 680
what are you having trouble with ?
OK, for starters (and because this is the maximum pain right now).
How many entries do you have in the Calendar?
I have kept a PDA based diary for nearly 10 years. It has everything I've ever done and everyone I've ever met, in about 6500 entries, which results in a Palm datebook file of 1.4MB.
Porting this diary to Outlook results in a PST file of 37MB... Attempting to ActiveSync this to the X7500 results in 'Device Full'.
So, what gives? The sync settings for Pocket Outlook imply that there are some issues about the number of entries the device can reasonably hold (by defaulting the sync to 2 weeks). But I'm used to having my whole diary at hand.
How can I keep my not very large (1.4MB) diary, on a device which appears to want to increase the data space requirement by a factor of 40?
I should comment, that the Palm->Outlook port was done using code to access the Palm/datebook.dat file that has been in production for >5 years and new code to interface the Office Outlook 11.0 Object library. It seemed pretty straight forward to do, but I wouldn't rule out as the cause.
Hence, my question: "How many entries do you have in the Calendar?"...
Regards
Since 1998-
Palm Pilot 5000, Palm IIIx, Palm V, Palm m505, Sony Clie TH55, HTC x7500
i have no where near that many... but that is odd that it got so large...
now ur port program could be the problem... what i recommend is try syncing directly from palm to outlook and see if that solves your problem...
thats what i did...
but again my calendar is nowhere near your size...
tell me how that works out for you?
i know outlook tells me to archive stuff every now and then...
I've now found out that the Pocket Outlook file in \pim.vol, so I can search a bit and, surprise, surprise, it turns out to be quite a common problem for those people who have a lot of entries in their diary.
Sigh... The X7500 is a really nice device, but with a questionable 'phone and a PIM that baulks at a large calendar (and when was a database with 6,500 entries large; or 1.4MB of plain-text too much).
There's something inherently wrong with WM5/PO as a PDA (imo). Now where's that Linux thread...
Thanks & regards
I can only suggest that you convert as many as you can into recurring appointments.

Thanks for the idea...
But why would it make any difference? It'd be quite an easy mod to do, but it takes hours to sync all the entries, so I'm a bit averse to any further experimentation.
My current thinking is to set ActiveSync to restrict the x7500 to only current entries and access my history via the web. It's far from ideal, but if it works out then I can stay on one device, which is the whole point of course.
Thanks & regards
Hi chaps,
I've just got myself an O2 XDA Orbit - great device, and now I'm looking for developing for it - just simple things at first, like a Blackjack game, or a simple Today feature with the sun and moon times on it; this sort of thing.
I've got Visual Studio .NET 2003, but I see that in order to program the latest devices, you need VS 2005 (?). So, I've downloaded Embedded Visual Studio C++ v4 with all the SDK's and I'm hoping to develop for an earlier version of Windows Mobile, and hope that it works.
So while I've got all that, I'm now stuck as to where to start! Can anyone point me to a good book, or something online which will help me through a simple CE application? How you do get the Today screen working, for example? I realise that this might be asking a lot, but a couple of pointers would be great - if you could!
Many thanks,
MrP.
I'm just starting out myself with windows mobile programming. You can find a lot of info from msdn. Here is an example Hello app.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms912017.aspx
You can find a lot of good stuff at the code project site also.
http://www.codeproject.com/ce/
eVC has wizards that will get you going. One thing I found out about using eVC is that you won't be able to debug your programs on a WM5/6 device since the SDK's are not compatible with them. It can be a bit of a challenge to fix bugs without a debugger. I can't get the debugger to work with the emulator either for some reason.
A question for other eVC developers out there. Is it possible to use the emulator to debug programs or do you all have an old PPC2003 device that you use to do your debugging? Or have you all moved on to VS2005?
I've bought visual studio 2005 standard and it is great - it fully supports WM5/6 (with sdk) and runtime debugging - for .exe it works well but I have problems with .dll - I can't debug dll files - does anyone know how to make it?
Pleas look up threads started by vijay555.
He wrote a comprehensive article on the tools and possibilities to begin developing for these devices.
Just as a quick side note:
There is no need what so ever to pay M$ money for VS 2005 if you want to develop in C / C++.
Apps written in eVC++ 4 will work perfectly with WM 5 and 6 and if you need any missing API (not many of those) you have 2 choices:
1) Manually unpack the SDK and link to it.
2) Use implicit linking (that LoadLibrary and GetProcAdress).

Sorry about the delay in replying...
Many thanks for the pointers.. Just a matter of starting now!
I'm so used to the features of Excel on the Tilt and Tilt2 that when I got the Focus I thought that Excel would be the same, full feature product. What did we end up with? A watered down version of Excel! I'm just at a loss over this mainly because there's nothing simple like find and replace. What the heck?
I was under the impression that Office 2010 would be better than the other phones I had. Instead it's like a featureless program that's only there by name so they can tout that "we have Office 2010 on our phones."
Sigh. I guess this is Microsoft's way of giving us progress. One step forward, 3 steps back.
What do you want from Excel in a phone? VBA Macros editor?
This "featureless" version is just perfect for quick editions on-the-go.
Well, just basically the same features that were on my Tilt and Tilt 2, which had the search and replace, sort, format cells, some functions, etc. The version on the Focus allows opening Excel files and the extent of modification is changing the font. I understand we can do the regular math stuff by just typing in the formula.
Things just aren't not as quick or easy with the version on the Windows Phone 7 than it was with 6 or 6.5.

Press the "..." in the right lower side. There is sorting and formating. Also new version supports graphs.
Just checked and it does indeed have sort, apply filter, format cell (change colors/fonts/date/percentage/currency), undo, send, save, save as. However, not quite the same type of options that were available when we were using Windows mobile 6.0 and 6.5.
