It may be broken but it may just be the connector that needs re-set.
See free dismantling guides on the link below
(To rule out software issues you need to do a Hard Reset preferrably after a full backup)

Thanks Mike!

By reset we just mean to unplug it and replug it a few times (perhaps also rub the contacts with some electrical contact cleaner or cleaning alcohol.
The idea in removing and reinserting a few times is simply to rub off any surface oxidisationonthe contacts.
If you are unsure about removing the camera see here:

Hi every one,
My Hermes' Front Sensor has got some problems
I use Web Camera to open Front Sensor and i can only see a mass of purple very very unclear image through it.
And the last time i use web camera to check Front Sensor i didn't find such a problem, everything goes well.
If there any bugs in the Front Sensor ?
Thanks !
no one knows....?

The same thing has happened to me. I have tried it on different roms, including one I know it worked on before, so it must be a hardware issue. Could this be caused by a loose connector or something with a simple fix like that?
I dont want to take my phone apart if theres no chance of fixing it anyway.
Maybe people are confused by the term "Sensor"?
I will assume you meant the Front Camera.
If so, then yes the connector can come loose. It is a simple push on connector, but you do have to dismantle quitefar to get to it.
Have a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2337130&postcount=4
Assuming you have been through soft and hard resets, you MIGHT want to attempt dismantling the phone.
Mike
Well, I got ss1271 by email and I'm confused (nothing unusual there you may think!!) What he says is this:
Sorry for that I cannot have an access to this xda-developers forum right now, but I'll check it asap.
Well, I mentioned "sensor" which refers to the sensor module that located right of the earphone( a transparent some cube-like stuff), not the front camera.
Whatever, I'm very glad that u could gimme a possible answer, thanks in advance!!

(Hope you don't mind me posting the email ss1271 - nothing looked private or confidential)
Can anybody think what is being referred to? I know there is a keyboard light sensor, but that seems irrelevant so what is being referred to?
Any ideas?
Mike
Thanks Mike, you were right the first time, it is the front camera. The confusion has come about because Ateksoft refer to it as the front sensor in their webcamera software, and as that and coolcamera are the only software other than video-calling which can use the front camera, that is where both ss1271 and myself discovered the problem.
I have opened my phone up once a while back, but am not in a hurry to do it again until I have a serious need to use the front camera.
I actually used your guides when I opened up my phone before, and will again if I try to solve this before I upgrade, (too poor to at the moment), so thanks for providing them.
Heres a pic of me taken with my front cam.

Well hoagy looks fine!
The push in connector is the most obvious first thing to check in my view. The trouble is loose connectors can show a host of different scrambled pictures and weird colours and missing lines. Can't recall one that vivid shade before but I've seen bright green
I guess the standard thing is just ensure it's not software by doing a hard reset (but I guess you have done that already)

Hi Mike,jez
First i apologize for my mistaken the Hermes with the Touch Diamond.
When I first got Mike's mail, I took it grant to think that Mike was talking about the Diamond issue...
I'm sorry for you two guys to get confused.
Now I'll clearify that in this thread I was discussing about the FRONT CAMERA of Hermes.
and unfortunately I eventually cannot fix the front camera problem.
All phone functions work properly but sometimes when i slide the keyboard and switch to camera the screen goes green with some strange shakin lines (camera tape problem?). Does some one had same problem? Help :S
Yes check out it's push in connector.

Then unfortunately you may need a new camera. You can try pushing it on and off the contacts a few times just in case a contact is oxidised but other than a hard reset, there's not much else to try.
Mike
thanks mike for the response!
the camera worked worked for a short while but reverted back to the green stuff. any further attempts at getting it to work have been futile,
would a hard reset really be necessary?
any idea what could be the issue? (other connectors)
how much would it cost to replace and where could i get one from?

To be honest I don't think a hard reset would work, all it would do would be to rule out any software issue.
You're best bet would be to find someone parting out a Hermes. Finding a new original part could be very difficult although you could try contacting some of the companies listed on my website www.mikechannon.net
(I do not recommend any of the listed companies - I have never dealt with any of them, I simply list a few as possibles to try).
You could try posting here to request a part from someone with a bricked phone (for example). I recently gave thw same part to a member here myself - but that was the only one I had.

Mike, just wanted to say a big thank you for all your documentation. My HTC was suffering this "green-screen" camera problem, and would sometimes work after a soft-reset, and sometimes not, before finally doing nothing but display the "green death".
After trying a ROM re-flash (and what a HUGE learning curve that was to absorb in one day!) I eventually found your post above, and with your helpful pages was able to dismantle the phone case, and re-seat the camera connector.
It took three or four "re-seats" to get it to work again, but it did the trick! And all for the cost of a £6.99 Torx set.
Much obliged!

Well done. Those connectors can get a little oxidised and start acting up. Glad you got it sorted (for now). That ROM flashing experience won't go amiss either
Mike
You can also use a little isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud on the connectors to clean off any oxidation, However, don't use metho as it leaves a residue.
Works a little better than just reseating a few times, you'd be amazed at the stuff that builds up in your Hermes...
Cheers...

Thanks for that, Ultramag69. I've got some isopropyl alcohol, so I'll give that a try. The camera started doing the same thing again recently (clumsiness on my part, knocking the 'phone around, I expect) and it's probably worth mentioning that it's definately a connection issue, as oppose to battery / power etc., as I found squeezing the case from the front and back just above the camera lens could temporarily "fix" the problem.
Thanks again.

russian hammer
hi all,
thx for all your tips.
i had the same greenline problem as well and read somewhere in here about the russian hammer technique.
so after i had tried all hard and soft reset and all kinds of ROM flashing, I just gave my phone a solid knock onto the back where the cam sits, while i had the green flickering screen on and HELLO! now it is clear again.
So seriously this is a connector problem, a loose contact or whatever.
so people, try the knocking first b4 you loose all that time like me

hi!
I've a big problem with the "front button" of my TyTn (the keypad and the upper buttons).
they don't work for 90% of times.
The configuration of these button in WM is correct.
This problem is with WM6 and also WM6.1
What I can do?
thanks
same here
it's really annoying...
anyone solved this problem?
same here
It would help if you could be more precise about which buttons are not working (the Hermes doesn't have a 'keypad' per se) which variant of the Hermes you have (8525 etc) and which ROM you have.
OK!
the model is hermes200 with WM 6.1
udk 8.0 R2 vega - kaiser ROM 3.62
CE 5.2.19209
Build 19213.0.7.0
I hope the informations are what you need.
I attach a picture with the buttons that don't work
Just got my phone back from the service (because of that problem) My friend who repaired it told me that the cable that connects the screen with the main part of the phone did everything.... ( sorry for my english)

Yes, and that flex cable connector is a good place to start for the DIY people here.
Mike
I opened my Tytn several times and cleaned the inside stuff, reconnected connectors.
Now it's ALMOST good. Still few times a day front buttons die, but emmediately after turning display ON and OFF buttons start working.
I did it reading this site.
What about flex cable connector? Isn't it fixed with a tape to the case? Do I just use another tape to fix it back after reconnecting the connector?
thanks so much for your suggestion!!!
I found the froblem in the flex connector in the left side (see picture).
There was too pressure on this.
Now the phone runs perfectly!

hi, i have the same problems but i only had problems with it after flashing my rom to WM6.5... please help.. thanks!
I had a similar problem with my X01HT. Replacing the front buttons fixed the problem, seems like the original front buttons were worn out after intensive use.
My Athena is malfunctioning: half of the display is filled with white stripes (please, see the attached pictures).
I've tried with an hard reset, and with boot mode but nothing to do.
I don't know what's happened. I simply connect it to my pc via usb (to recharge it) and after some hours when I picked it up, it was became as you can see on the pictures.
Any ideas? Please help me!

Hello, I just bought a Moto X Play XT1563 used that has the camera problem.
When you open the camera app it returns the error "Camera busy. Can not start the camera. If this happens again, restart your phone."
The former owner of the handset, informed me that this happened after he upgraded the system.
I already took a technical assistance, the rear camera was changed but nothing solved.
I've tried all the tutorials and tips I found on the internet.
I'm still hoping to be a problem with the system.
Can anyone give me a light, or idea of what that might be?
I'm attaching the dmesg.log (kernel log, I'm currently with CoffeeKernel v2) which is returning some errors on the part of the camera.
I thank you.
Sorry, message has been translated.

After some test I think the problem is something with the front camera, when I mount the front camera sometimes work but not ever, in fact when I remove the front camera the main camera allways work. I verified the grounds but I not found nothing.
Another option it's a problem with the firmware.

When you removed the front, did the flash (led) work again?
Mine currently does not work at all, not even the flashlight.

Guys, I've found that the problem in my phone was the flat of flash. It was a little to far from contacts . So I removed the clue in it's back and added a little piece of plastic. And assembled the phone again. It worked just like a charm.

I've done a little mod and resolved my problem. The led's connectors were not touching correctly the connectors of the board.
I corrected it by sticking a little piece of plastic below the connectors of "middle frame", so it became a little popped out and solved the problem.
I hope have helped you guys.
