Hi guys,
The version of CoPilot Live 8 that comes installed on the HD2 is something I wish to use. I have a license key (had purchase this a while ago). I have managed to activate my license on the HD2 but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the latest maps onto the device.
I have RTFM and searched and I still don't get it, am I being really stupid? Any help on getting the latest maps onto my device (SD card I presume) would be much appreciated.

There may be an issue with my method, I will report back as soon as I have investigated. I suggest not using this guide until I have found what the issue is and if there is a fix/solution.

UPDATE 24/12/09
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right guys, the method below does work but you need a fair amount of patience. The guide below has been updated.
Do everything shown in the guide below and your maps will download. It will take a fair amount of time depending on the follow:
1. The size of the maps you are downloading.
2. The speed of your broadband connection.
READ THE WHOLE GUIDE BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCENARIO:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
You have a new HD2 with CoPilot Live 8 preinstalled (I think this is the case for ALL new HD2s as CoPilot Live 8 is cooked into the default/official ROM.
You already have a CoPilot Live 8 license (that you perhaps used on a previous device etc) that covers you for regions other than the one that comes preinstalled on the SD card that comes in the box.
You want to use your existing license and map regions on your shiney new HD2.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
SOLUTION:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Deactivate the license on your old device by doing in the following:a. Launch CoPilot
b. Menu -> Settings->Licencing. Press deactivate (you need to have an internet connection active for this to work, I used WiFi).
c. You should see a message the confirms the deactivation has been successful.2. Before you do anything on your HD2 with CoPilot I suggest copying the "copilot" folder on the bundled 2GB SD card onto your desired card (I used an 8GB Sandisk that I used to use with my Touch Pro). You can skip this step if you just want to use the bundled card and there is enough space for any additional maps you want/need to download.
3. Make sure your HD2 has an internet connection, once again I suggest using WiFi for speed and stability reasons.
4. Make sure your HD2 is connected to a power supply to keep it "awake". Not sure if this is really necessary.
5. Fire up CoPilot and follow the on-screen instructions.
6. Enter your license key when prompted, followed by the email address and password you used on the old device.
7. Your HD2 installation of CoPilot should now be activated (as indicated by an on-screen confirmation).
8. Press Menu->Download Maps: Now select the map/region you desire (this will be dictated/limited by the license code you enter I believe). Once you do this the download will commence but you will (I did) get thrown back to the map screen showing your location. Once again press Menu->Download Maps. You should now see a progress indicator and the title at the top of the page should show "Download In Progress".
9. After you complete step 8 below you will see a progress indicator in CoPilot in the "Download Maps" section as stated above. This will obviously creep up as your map is downloaded. When this progress bar reaches the end it may appear to become "stuck", it will not move for sometime. At this point do not lose heart and be patient, VERY patient!
During this time I think the device is making a copy of the file it just downloaded, I dont know why and I dont know how, because looking in file explorer the two files are named EXACTLY the same and within the same folder?! How is this even possible?
The only thought I have on this is that perhaps it's doing some weird check/checksum on the downloaded file. While this is happening the screen will not change, the progress bar will remain at 100% and the title will still be "Download In Progress".
The downloading process will eventually switch to an "Unpacking" process which is reflected in the title of the screen which will now show "Unpacking Data", however the progress bar will still say downloading and reset back to zero and then start to creep back up (though thank fully fairly quickly compared to the previous one!). Again when this progress indicator reaches 100% the device will sit there for a little while.
10. When the device/CoPilot decide they're done you'll be thrown to the map screen and shown a dialog box. Choose "Ok" and you will be shown a list of your available Data Regions. Select your desired data region. Now, weirdly, for me the device showed Europe and Europe!! I assume the currently selected Europe was the "UK & Ireland" map set which was preloaded so I selected the 2nd "Europe" option in the list.
11. Now press OK and you will be asked to restart CoPilot, press "Yes" and CoPilot will exit.
12. Restart CoPilot and the new map set and data region should be set!! You're good to go!!!
PHEW!!!
The issue I was experiencing was (I think) due to the fact that I launched and activated CoPilot without having an SD card inserted, I then tried to insert and download maps but I think the installation had configured itself to look to onboard space rather than the SD card.
I hope this guide is useful for others.
RTFM??? i know theres a download maps section in the settings of copilot..??
Well when you activate it gives you the option to download maps, but it seems to want to download them to the device rather than storage card. There's not enough space on the device and obviously storage card would be a better option, but how?
I approached CoPilot customer service a while ago asking to get hold of maps - Iwas having the same problem. They replied with this link which worked for me,

Good luck.

But that link requires you to buy maps. I already have a license which I paid for. I have full pan-european map coverage under that license.
I bought paneuropean maps and in my conirmation mail I have been sent a link, where I could downoiad the maps. It's a file of about 1,5 Gig in size. You can copy everything to your storage. Simply copy the Copilot folder from the SD the HD2 came with to the big SD card you most certainly bought.

I think you misunderstand, I bought my license well before I bought my HD2, I used to use CoPilot Live 8 on my Touch Pro.
I now have a HD2, I deactivated the license on the Touch Pro and used the same license to activate the installation on the HD2.
I have a blank 8GB SD card to which I want to download the latest pan-euro maps to use with the installation of CoPilot Live 8 which is preinstalled on the HD2.
How do I do this?
Try downloading CoPilot Central 2.0, login with your account used on your Touch Pro. Press on the Store tab and go under maps, then download the appropriate map.
http://www.alk.com/copilot/central/
Plug in your HD2 and transfer the maps. I hope that works

Here's what ALK emailed me, though I'm not sure what happens if you follow these instructions when CoPilot is already installed.
EDIT: I'm assuming you've downloaded "8.0.0.346_Pan_Europe_Card_Image.zip" (the phone app) and not "CoPilot_Central_setup32.zip" (the desktop app)? The confirmation email I received following purchase had this link:
http://www.alk.eu.com/buynow/eu_download.asp
You'll need your order number, last name, and postal code to get the download...
How to put it on your memory card:
Step 1: Download CoPilot Live v8 software and maps to your desktop computer
Click on the download link above and save the file to a location on your desktop computer
Once the maps are downloaded, right-click on the downloaded zip file and select 'Extract All'
You should now have 2 new folders on your PC: '2577' and 'CoPilot'
Step 2: Transfer CoPilot Live v8 software and maps to your memory card
Note: if your phone has a large internal storage (for example HTC Touch Diamond) then you may not need a memory card, and can transfer the maps directly
The easiest way to do this is using a memory card reader
Insert your memory card into your desktop computer's card reader
Browse to the memory card using your desktop computer's file explorer
Copy the 2577 and CoPilot folders onto the main directory of your memory card
Once the transfer is completed, please insert the memory card into your mobile device
Alternative method: transfer the files to a memory card in your mobile device using a sync cable
Insert your memory card into the card slot in your mobile device
Connect your mobile device to your desktop computer using a synchronization cable
Browse to the memory card in your mobile device using your desktop computer's file explorer
Copy the 2577 and CoPilot folders from your desktop computer onto your memory card
Step 3 - Install CoPilot Live on your mobile device
If your mobile device is connected to your desktop PC, disconnect it now
Insert the memory card into your mobile device (if not already inserted)
CoPilot Live installation should begin automatically after a few seconds. If not, use your mobile device's file explorer to browse to the 2577 folder on the memory card and tap 'Autorun'
Select an installation location when prompted on-screen. We recommend that you install CoPilot to your device
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation
Are you using the 2Gb SD card that came with your phone? If not, copy the copilot folder from it the SD card in your phone. All your compatible maps need to be placed in this folder (the ones that came with your phone will already be there).

I still have all this information in the original email that ALK sent me and I am sure this method would also work. But the pre-installed version of CoPilot is newer. The one in the email link is:
8.0.0.346
The pre-installed is:
8.0.0.457
Hence I wanted to use the pre-installed version with my existing license. Also by doing a fresh download you ensure that you have the latest maps/data packages (I hope).

Cheers. The community gives so much to us, it's only fair we contribute in return when we can!! That's what it's all about.
I would suggest making this a sticky or something but not sure how many people actually like/use CoPilot. Either way, as long as people use search they will find this thread I may also post a link in the hints & tips sticky, maybe the OP of that thread can work it into his list.

That is what the forums are about.
Ah crap,
We spoke too soon. My device downloaded the maps but CoPilot would not shut down properly (it hung on shutdown). I pressed the "Home" key and had a look in task manager and it was sat there, I waited a bit but it remained so I killed the task.
I relaunched CoPilot and it threw an error, something along the lines of "some files could not be unpacked, these files will be deleted". Press ok and it continued to work but without the new maps. I am wondering if the process that appeared to be stuck in memory was infact unpacking the downloaded files?
I am trying the download the again and am going to leave my device running overnight, hopefully that should be enough time for it to download and unpack the files.

Someone who knows may well be able to advise you on here at some point, but in the meantime, have you tried contacting the CoPilots bods? Relevant maps were stored on my SD card when I got the phone, so I didn't have to worry about it. This is obviously something they've arranged with HTC so I'd imagine they should be able to help.

Yeah I might hit them up in the morning but they are only open for the morning on Christmas Eve. I will try anyway.
CoPilot 8 and Data Regions (USA)
I have a Touch Pro 2 and downloaded to my PC the software; 1.2 gigs. I'm asking myself with an image file that big why after downloading it to my sd card do I need to download data regions; so upon request I download Alabama; the state I live in. We're travelling to LA later today; does that mean I have to download Mississippi and Louisiana to plot an address for the software? I'm asking myself why with such a large file and I expect it to be a large file; why do I have to download these data regions in the first place; does data imply maps or does it imply "data" features which require a data plan? The software works great, I'm just trying to understand how to plot a 600 mile trip and not pull my hair out too.
The second is CoPilot Central - I'm going this is sync software, but like others who have posted; it wants to put the software on my device and I don't have the memory where an 8 gig sd card should do the trick. I have wi-fi and I'm using the device to do the work. I just think that this part of it wasn't well thought out by ALK.
What else caught my attention was the updated release 12-29-2009. I bought and downloaded the software on the 30th.
So what am I missing here? Must I download all the data regions manually? And if so, what exactly other than audio files is within that 1.2 gig download?
Thanks
What exactly have you downloaded?

To date I have had the following problems with shortcuts to exe files located on my 1GB Storage Card:
1) Every time I switch on the device, Skype reports that it cannot load the Skype.exe file on the Storage Card, a shortcut of which is in the Startup folder
2) Every reboot, GSPMagic cannot load itself from Startup. If however I delete the shortcut, then create a new one manually in the Starup folder, it works fine! I have checked the old shortcut and it is exactly the same as the new one! They are identical, yet one says that the source file cannot be found.
3) Microsoft Money installed a shortcut in Programs. The shortcut had no icon, and again said the file was not found or needed to be reinstalled. Yet when I created the shortcut manually into Programs, and overwrote the shortcut setup created, it worked fine.
What on earth is going on, and has anyone experienced something similar?
Most other program shortcuts to the Storage Card work fine strangely!
I was under the impression that anything called at startup had to be installed in main memory.
GSPMagic did not work for me on the storage card, but once in main memory was fine.
Can anyone confirm this?
So I have to install Skype on the Device not Storage Card? I don't think the setup instructions said this :?
Glad to hear you're using GSPM++, it means that mackaby07 and I have helped some people!
I too have had trouble when loading this on the memory card, but in the main memory it's fine, and it doesn't take up enough space to worry about either!
Haven't noticed any real speed increase with that lil prog, just testing it at the moment.
However, what about my issues with Skype, and MS Money, both loading from the Storage Card. Surely they shouldn't cause a problem? Weird one this.
CJSnet - at least on the Magician, storage card shortcuts aren't always ready to be run from softreset, it seems like it takes a few seconds after boot for the storage card to be ready to use (so much OS kerchunking going on in the background perhaps). So it's as if the storage card isn't inserted at that point, so they don't launch.
I'll be trying to write a small fix for this at some point...
V
Great, please do post it back here when you have!
In the meantime any way to fix for example Skype insisting on running every time I wake the device out of standby? It doesn't appear in the Startup group so must be somewhere else, and if on the Storage Card, it won't run -- I get the same error.
4) Microsoft Reader again installs an icon in Programs, but when clicked I get the same error as all the above.
This is therefore not a Startup lag issue.
The exact error is:
"The file 'msreader' [for example] cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file".
Help!
Hehe talking to myself here, but hmm, this is odd, I just tried recreating the MS Reader shortcut.
Original from Setup: 19#\Windows\msreader.exe (<-path does not exist)
Manually created by me: 36#"\Storage Card\Windows\MsReader.exe"
Why is Setup, when I tell it to install Reader on the Storage Card, creating a shortcut that does not mention the Storage Card, and therefore cannot possibly work? This must be the issue with the other items.

Hi Vijay, any news on this handy sounding app?
I am still getting this problem, and not just after boot.
Why is it, whenever I turn the device on from standby power-save mode, I get an error with Skype saying it can't find itself on the Storage Card?
Why is Skype trying to load something when I come out of standby sometimes, but not always?
I have tomtom 6.10 with north american maps and for some reason its not saving previous searches, nor is it saving current home destination or favorites
anyone have this issue?
are you keeping the maps and voices etc...on the sd card?
Also which version of ttn do you use?
The app itself is installed on the device itself the maps are loaded in the memory card
version is 6.010 (7720)
map version is v650.1052
Check you have a 'My Documents' folder on the sd card....generally thats where tomtom looks.
Sometimes a 3rd party app can drive ttn mental....bluetooth explorer is one such app.
Mine is working fine, gotta be something else
it sounds like mine is set up the same as yours, and it works just fine. try a reinstall
Make sure you're exiting TT properly via the menu and not through Running Programs or with a soft reset. TT appears to save settings on exit so if you bypass this it won't save.
I've try a reinstall a number of times I even reinstall of the WM6 rom, formated my memory card and still its not saving recent info, nor home address

I had this issue with TTN 5 on my JAM- favourites, home and any other personal preferences were not being saved; the problem was that when the files were copied over from a CD-ROM, they were still read-only. I removed that attribute from all folders and files and all was ok.
You can also copy the folders/files off the CD-ROM on to your computer then change the attributes from there.
maps needed
mine workes fine.
just bought tomtom but no maps of europe,
i think there are lots of people who want to share maps..
Same problem
I'm having exactly the same problem. Any changes I make are completely erased as soon as I shut down the app. I created a folder called "My Documents" on my SD card, and even one within it called 'navigator' to mimic the structure on my handheld (Dell Axim x51v). Can someone provide some detailed verifications I can perform to check that everything is working as it should be?

I agree with this... However, the file you are looking for is on the SD Card in the Map folder (eg. USA and Canada 675_1409) it is called MapSettings.cfg. Make sure it is not read only attribute and it will start to save your favorites!
Good Luck
remove "read only" from MapSettings.cfg
use some software like Total Commander or another file manager software and remove "read only" attribute from MapSettings.cfg in the "USA and Canada xxxx_xxxx" directory on your storage card.
That should fix it.
I am receiving the current message on my hd2 and would like to know how i can repair the problem as it keeps popping up on the screen all the time
'Storage memory is critically low. If the storage memory is not increased, other programs may not be able to start. Use File Explorer to delete files that are no longer needed or move some files to a storage card'
Any advice please?
Simple advice- you've got too much installed or saved to internal memory rather than the storage card.
Common culprits are browser caches for PIE and Opera, the HTC Album cache, media files like videos, music and pictures etc.
Use File Explorer to look in all the sub folders of My Documents as a starting point. Try moving all the big files over the the storage card.
Download Treeview from Microsoft Marketplace- it's free and can show you where all the storage memory is going.
should i do this through the phone direct or the pc?

You can do either- as long as you connect using ActiveSync rather than Disk Drive mode.
Using the PC is probably a slightly easier experience as Windows Explorer is more informative than the mobile version!

You don't have to do all that. It works great out of the box as well. Those are just possibilities, to customize it and tweak it.
Uninstall everything you have installed on your phone and reinstall it to the storage card. Always install applications to the storage card. That should fix your 'problem'.
Additionally, open the File Explorer, go to \Windows and delete the folder YouTube. That gives you additional free space but the folder comes back when you watch YouTube videos, so you can do this from time to time.
can i drag and drop my applications folder into the storage card via the pc?
Yes, but then the links in the start menu won't work anymore. Think of what happens when you move the Program Files folder on your PC. It's the same here.
can someone give me a step by step guide for doing this task please.
Go to Settings, Manage Applications, Uninstall Applications. There, uninstall all the applications you have installed to teh main memory.
Then reinstall them, this time to the storage card.
And delete the YouTube cache from time to time.
When we're speaking of free storage memory, how much memory do you all have free?
Mine is around 20 mb, is it to small?
Beacuse when i watched a video on youtube i got the same message as in the first post.

As I suggested in the earlier post, this is nothing to do with installed programs- most of those are pretty small and are unlikely to be grabbing the majority of your memory.
It is most likely that you have allowed some large files to be stored in the main memory. By default the phone DOES store most big user files like photos and videos on a storage card, but perhaps that has been altered somewhere?
You need to use a file finding utility to sort this- if Treesize is not available in your locality via Marketplace (or you can't access Marketplace) then you can try Spacefinder, a tiny, free program that will sort your files and folders in order of size, giving a hint as to where the memory may have gone. You can also download Treesize Mobile direct from Jam Software
Stuff like CleanRAM, SKTools etc is OK for clearing RAM but has no effect on Storage Memory apart from clearing some caches, though this can help a lot.
One other tip- as has been suggested, try and install programs onto a storage card, but not if they are system programs like Today plug-ins or keyboards etc. These must go into device memory otherwise you may get some startup errors.
This baffles me. I have just got an HD2 to replace my HD - I started to put exactly the same programs onto the HD2 as I had previously installed on my HD (I install all programs on the device). I got the low memory warning long before I put all the programmes on - on a brand new device with no internet browsing/video/music on device itself.
My HD has more memory than my HD2 - how is that possible?
None of these explanations seem to explain how this happens on my HD2 but not my old HD. I have NEVER had a low memory warning on my HD despite having used it for over a year and having installed more on it than I have managed on the HD2.
I have recently found the pre-installed Google Maps created a cache folder in device memory and pumped it up to 25 Megs. Deleted it of course.

The HD2 has more memory (ROM) but a huge chunk (150MB) is taken up by all the HTC Sense gubbins, leaving a relatively smaller amount free to the user. Ultra light cooked ROMs give about 150MB more ROM, and light ROMs about 100MB more than the default ROM.
It also seems that a lot of caching is going on- Album, Googlemaps, Browsers etc eating up ROM.
Desire HD comes with preinstalled ROUTE 66 maps on the 8 Gb storage card. When I got my new HD I immediately copied all data to 16 Gb SD card (probably my mistake) to get more space. As a result My Location app don’t show in offline mode detailed map and POIs, but if a go to Menu > Upgrade I can see all preinstalled maps. I put original SD card to Desire HD, made restart with same result. Actually I don’t know did this application work when I switched on HD Desire at first time.
Any suggestions please

It could be that the detail map for your counry is not so detail for your city. Check if the map of another big city in your contry is detailed.
See if this solves your problem as it helped me with my Locations problem.

Is there a way to store files from programs on the SD card. I am using Co-Pilot GPS and when I install the program on my tablet (from the SD card) it tells me to download the maps. The maps are also on the SD card but Co_pilot can't see them. I had tried to download direct to the tablet but the file is too big for internal memory so I had to download only my state. This has happened with several Apps that I tried to load. Is there a way to redirect the data to the SD and have the program recognise it. Do I need Dexters download??
Thanks,
John

Sorry... I don't think anyone has figured out how to get app to work with the SD card yet. eLocity/Stream TV has not addressed the issue. I do believe Dexter is looking into it.
For now I have CoPilot running on my g -tablet, as I don't think it would fit onto my eLocity. You may be able to fit the US maps, but just barely (again just maybe, if the stars align just right). I believe it gives you the option to just download regions or states.
On a device with such little storage available this is a BIG deal!

Does Android have the ability to utilize regular Linux Links? If so, maybe you can install it minimally first with nothing else on the device and then move the directory to the SD card then link to it and add other maps. If that works it would free up local space and allow you to install other apps.
