Deactivating "Data Connection"? - HD2 General

Hey,
When I start Iexplorer mobile the HTC HD2 leo starts the "data connection" (EDGE) AUTOMATICALLY.
Very stupid idea by HTC, because when I am abroad roaming, it will cost me a fortune to use this EDGE connection in case Wifi goes down by an accident...
Question: how to switch off this stupid thing?

That is actually not HTC's stupid mistake, but Microsoft's stupid mistake.
One way how to avoid it is to setup 'dummy' connection which won't work and set it as default. There is also some application which does just that, I guess it was named NoData or something like that.
However I do it manually when I need (which is not very often).

Hey,
May I ask how would you set up a "dummy" connection? When I go to "data connection" there is only a country and GSM provider in a drop down list. Nothing else can be modified??
thanks

Just use NODATA

problem with nodata is that it stops data connection only when roaming abroad, right? I would like to permanently switch it off!

No nodata just stops all connections point blank if you tell it to, thats the point of it.

How to disable Internet

i just got my phone not a week ago(the Sprint HTC Touch) and just realized that my company does not allow phones with internet access, i was wondering if there was a way i could disable the internet on the phone, so that i dont accidentally fat finger it and open something up... thanks in advance
How about turning off "Data Connection" from the Comm Manager?
i havent tried it, but have you tried deleting the modem settings?
you know, the ones that dial out #777. or maybe you can just get it to dial elsewhere
as far as i know there is no way to do that without deleting the #777 connection in setting/connections/manage current connection.
But then you will not be able to send picture and video message. As that is the same connection it uses.
Also as soon as you soft reset the device. the connection is back again.
Really I don't understand how your company is able to put a cap on this, as most every cell phone now and day can access the internet. Even if it's not activated on the phone, you can still access for a use per minute charge.
And I'm not just talking about pda/phones.
Unless I'm wrong. But i have yet to find one that doesn't.
Call Sprint and have them "Disable NAI Functionality" on your phone. It's a service feature that restricts your device from accessing any kind of data.
settings->connections->connections->advanced->select networks
there are some texts showing "programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using"
and a dropdownbox
select the dropdownbox item which is not called something like "my isp"
but pick the one thats called something like "my network"
then all programs trying to access the internet will be forced to use activesync as internet connection and if activesync is not connected they will fail!
thanks.
I have been trying to figure this out for ages. Thanks for your help.
thanks for all of your help, i dont agree with my company, but i really like this phone, i just need to show them that it does not work for a few months then after they stop checking i can re-enable it.

Automatic connections (Wifi/3G)

Hi everyone!
I've had PDA phones since a couple of years now, and I've always been searching for something.
Here is my problem:
When the phone needs an internet connection, windows mobile automaticaly tries to connect with the 3G connection.. As I don't have an unlimmited 3G connection, it's very annoying..! That's why I have to manually turn the Wifi "ON"
What I am searching for
I'd like a very intuitive and simple software that ask (with a popup for example) which connection to use (Wifi/3G) when the phone needs the internet.
Hope you understood what i'm searching for..!
While not a solution NoData might help part of your problem in the interim.
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility/
It will at least let you disable 3G/GPRS when you need to so you don't go over.
Thanks for the answer, i know this solution.. But that's not really what i'm searching for..!
Maybe You can create a fake connection for 3G so the phone doesn't get to connect? Just an idea, haven't tried. It still leaves the WiFi problem - why there isn't an option to select which connection to use if one is needed...
depending on what rom you have im sure comm manager has buttons for wife and data connection, with basic on off control for each.
However Id have thought someone could write something which would switch between data connection enable and wifi disabled (when out and about) and the other way around when you have wifi available and dont want to use up your 3g allowance.
I don't think it's that easy
that Comm part is build into WM, so the developer would need to write a new shell that acts as internet and gives you the option of selecting the connection..
I do like the idea though
hmmm,
is perhaps feasible with Mortscript?
In which one intercepts the “Internet” call and then by Popup the choice would have?

Activating data connections just manual

Aloha !
I have a problem and I need your help (and yes, I have searched already):
My Blackstone activates data connections automatically, if a programm tries to reach the internet.
So far not a problem, as I have a flatrate for that.
The problem is, that it consumes much energy, if the data conection is etsablished and you drive in you car.
So my question is:
Is there any way to connect just manual to the internet ?
I tried deactivating the data connections by HD Tweak.
Afterwards it is still possible to connect to the internet and I even get an ip adress, but no programm on the phone is able to use that connection.
Does anyone have a clue, how to fix this ? It would be just perfect !
Tools like NoData and gb soft gprs umts tweak dont work, as they either dont block automatic connection or disable data connections completly.
Help would be appriciated, as this problem really annoys me.
Tavos
settings->connections->connections->advanced->select network
and select my home network or whatever it's called on your device
then no can create a connection using anything but wifi or over activesync
and when you want to let it use gprs
you do the same by select my isp or <insert your isp name> or whatever it's called on your device
Thanks for the answer, but thats not what I am looking for.
I want to be able to switch the data connection on/off by one click (with the CommManager for example), but not the programs to be able to do it.
The way you offered, it is completely off or it can be connected by programs.

I agree, this could be useful indeed.
I don't see the point of having a switch in the comm manager, if then any program can turn it on.

Data connection full time

Hey guys.
One of these days I got an SMS from my carrier saying my data plan had been activated (I didn't ask for it) and that my cell would be self configured to use the data connection.
The problem is that since then, my phone seems to be connected full time.
The back plate is hot as hell, the battery doesn't last 6 hours, and every cheap pc speaker set (that suffers interference from cell phone waves) indicates it's connected the whole time.
The first time it happenned, I managed to turn it off with "HD Tweak".
Now I flashed Dutty's "R7 Thriller" and the problem is back, though now I use HD Tweak to disable the connection, set "always on" to false, set "auto disconnect" to 10 seconds and nothing seems to fix this. The only way to make my battery last for more then half a day is to put it in airplane mode.
I even tryied to set the 'priority' order of connections to "My Work Network", and I even deleted the data connection (There's "Vivo Zap", the Edge/3G one, and "Vivo MMS" - this MMS hasn't been deleted by me).
Anybody had any problem like this? How to fix this?!
Thanks in advance!
try this app http://rapidshare.com/files/88130685/MoDaCo_NoData.CAB.html
it disables data connection completely -- install then go to settings, connections and start no data and disable your decided connection!
Thanks a lot, I'll give it a try! ; )
Just outta curiosity: is this normal, this full time connection? I disabled it every way I found, and yet it didn't stop!
F*** Windows Mobile... ¬¬

Of course it aint normal, but I maybe wrong, cuz i have a completely different operator and completely different data connection(which is turned off for me by the operator)--- full time connection maybe active because something is wrong with your rom or something - try a hard reset if the nodata app doesnt help
NoData didn't run in my ROM (Onkolog's WM6.5 Full). : (
But I installed "Advanced Config Tool" and disabled "GPRS Auto Attach".
Description: "Automatically search GPRS/3G connection on start of radio, or only when a data connection must be estabilished".
It seems cooler now; as soon as I get to my work I'll test it with the desktop speakers (they make some pretty weird noises when there is a cell phone radio frequency emitter near them, like a cell phone trying to connect to the 3G or GSM network).
I'll post it back when I get back!
I disabled my data connection like this
Settings>Connections>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks...
And in those two drop down menus select "My Work Network"
Worked for me....
I tried that too, but that didn't work.
Indeed, the only way to make the battery last more then 6 hours is to use "Advanced Config" and disable that 3G lookup thing.
Weird, uh? Anybody had a similar problem...?

turn off autoconnect of data connection

i just got this prepaid sim, that charges per MB that i use, and i have the APN, so i make a new connection, fill in the user name and password, and then i just connect, but when i want to stop using it, i go in communication manager, and turn off the data connection, but a bit later i realize that it turned back on... i want to prevent that.
and second thing i wanna ask is, they offered me "high speed" connection, suposedly 3G, when i want to use the internet on my phone, i just open a browser and it connects and i start browsing, will it use the 3G automatically? cause when i go to comunication manager i only see "data connection" turned "on"

Hi ibsa03,
when the wifi signal is weak, your PDA will automatically connect to 3G.
I would advise you to change your Data Connection settings as you can disable them via the NoData/Dial-up EnabledDisabler program (search forum for the links to these programs for download or check your current ROM to see if it's already cooked in) to disable 3G.
As Mastoid said use NoData to toggle off data connection when you don't want to use it
thanks! im gonna try it out now.
as to the other doubt i had.. if i start browsing without the 3G turned on, what will my maximum speed be? using a 3G network coverage that is..
You might try using MonteCristoff's HD Tweak (search forums for it)... it has option to set autodisconnect timer (and yeah, it works).
As to your last question, depends how your device is set. If it has band autoselect, it'll try to use highest speed possible... meaning, HSDPA/HUSPA if available by network (and you write it is).
Othervise, if you force GSM/disable 3G, it will use EDGE or other highest GSM speed...
excellent
