This is only true with phones that use 3G. The phone and EDGE (data without 3G) use the same radio. 3G uses a different radio so both phone and data can be used at the same time.

Thanks....BUT THAT SUCKS ... I guess I will have to buy the G3 version or get the Service Manual to enable the G3 US like you could due with the original HD.

I have a problem with the answer and some thinking ...Voice is over GSM(G) and Data is over Edge(E) why would it be dropped? I think that is 2 different radio Freq...

How would you enable 3G in the US when the radio does not support the US 3g frequencies?

I'm getting this also, but in Singapore and we do have a 3g network. even have the 3g logo showing up on the singal.

t-mobile uk HSDPA and TYTN Issues, possible solution

Right, this is my second tytn and i have sent first one back last summenr because of HSDPA problems. problem was that when i use 3g connection to internet was (usually) broken and couldn't load anything at all but was ok in gsm mode. I thought htc might have fixed it so bought current TYTN but hey! problem is still there. While trying to sort out i noticed that if i disasble HSDPA 3g works fine. dont forget you will stick with standart 3 g speeds.
can any one confirm?
how do i know when im getting hsdpa as i never seem to get any speeds faster than around 29k which is around 3g speeds even with a full 3g signal although i do find internet access very very flaky still...
I am still running the standard t mobile settings, i havnt chaged the proxy settings which in some cases help a lot of people
id be more inclined to say its tmobile's end that isnt working correctly, my TyTN is working fine on HSDPA with O2-UK. Have you had your account enabled for using HSDPA????

you need to call t-mobile and tell them you want to speak to technical support then tell them that you want to enable hsdpa on your line. in 30 mins you get it. but doesnt metter. if you have hsdpa in your area and your tytn enabled you might have problem without actually getting it

Well it seems so, I checked online to make sure i wasnt spouting rubbish LOL! As in my sig i achieve ATLEAST 1.1mbps when im connected to and they did announce they would be trialing HSDPA in the isle of man (which they have the fixed aswell as mobile telecomms contracts) and they rollout would be to the latter of 2006?!? Ive managed these speeds since i got my USIM (early september).
If im SERIOUSLY mistaken then i apologise but its gotta be HSDPA since the practical achievable speeds on regular UMTS are around 300kbps right?
yes you're right. you can't achive 1mbit without hspda. i have an o2 sim. will try it

Hi, i currently live in toronto, canada, and i use rogers as my provider. when i put my sim card (from rogers) and turn on the phone, the phone says that it the network cannot find something (provider i think), and i should update my software. it then takes me to the "network connections" where i choose my country, and my provider. i notice that Canada is not in that drop down box. can someone please tell me how i can go about choosing Canada, or do i have to flash with a modded firmware instead of an original firmware? please answer!

Same thing happened here, I live in Brazil and it is not in the drop down list. I just choose dismiss (or something like that) as soon as the first message appears, followed by "do now show message again" (or smth like that).
Been using the phone without any problems so far.
oh yea? ok t hats cool. do you think you can help me out then..
i dont understand what 3G EDGE GPRS are.. like because im with the provider, i do not want to be charged more than just calling people.
when i plug in my sim card, do you know what is supposed to be displayed on the top of the dopod, near the Signal strength?
and could you tell me what each of those three mean? thankss

Answer:
3G-Video calling using the secondary camera (which we can't use yet in canada)
EDGE- Basically high speed data transfer (since you are with rogers, I believe there are data plans that support that feature)
GPRS-Never use it, cuz it charges on your airtime using the towers

ok, then normally if i dont want to be charged with anything other than having signal strength and making calls, what normally shows near the signal strength? i guess my question really is: if i dont want EDGE, 3G or UTMS or anything, what should i be seeing beside the signal strength?

You can call Rogers and tell them you don't want any data services, then you should see a X icon right beside your signal strength level...
Ok when i put it in it says:
Network Wizard
Your current operator (30272) is not supported. You should obtain an update from your device vendor.
Would you like to select another network provider?
I want to put canada in it.. if anyone knows how to do it please post!!

Agreed. I disabled all data way back when I had a regular phone. I kept getting random data charges when I never loaded my browser so I just disabled it. Anyway, I get the 3G logo, however, I haven't tested out the transfer rates or anything like that. I don't know if you can boost the signal or anything, I manage to make calls (which are surprisingly perfectly clear) with 1 bar.
I get the Edge logo on my phone in vancouver. I do know that they charge for Edge usage here and there was a big promo for unlimited Edge usage for about $40 bucks per month posted on craigslist.com. I know 3G network has been built, but probably a few good years before it's affordable to use.

surf and talk

is there anyway or any application that is out there that will let you browse the web and talk om the phone at the same time?
If you have GSM then you can do that without any special app. If you have CDMA then you can't do that unless you're connected via wifi.
Yup wifi and phone works really well LOL...

Just came out? AFAIK 3G on AT&T's network thats one of the benefits. I believe all 3G smartphones that had web browsing had voice capabilities at the same time... that's part of what 3G on a GSM network creates.
You can talk and surf in AT&T 3G network for sure. I am not sure if it works on T-mobile though. I would think it should, as it looks like it depends on technology and not the network itself!

Yea you can do this only with 3G connection. Cuz you are using E to talk I would assume! And 3G for data...
this is only possible using a GSM network(at&t, t-mobile...etc) without using wifi.
3g makes no difference in this situation.Verizon & Sprint run on CDMA networks and is not possible to "talk & surf" at the same time

Well the commercial is a response commercial to Verizon's ads... so at least in this case they aren't full of crap. Verizon's 3G network is based on EV-DO Rev A. You get the speeds of a 3G GSM connection but you don't get the simul voice/data functionality.

AT&T does not support browse/talk on its Edge network. So if your phone steps down to an Edge connection you lose that ability. AFAIK Edge CAN support the functionality its just that AT&T doesn't support it.
I will check on verizon when I get a chance, but if you look in the Kaiser forum, I showed everyone there in a thread how to get this functionality b'c the carriers (US) usually strip it out to preserve bandwidth. It has to do with the RIL settings in your provisioning xml. beeen a few years, but it is there if you want to dig. Look in kaiser rom development. Also, it has to be cooked in. the provisioning registry changes will always revert back to OEM settings if not cooked in.
It is not a matter of carrier but a matter of technology. Edge and 3G are akin to narrowband and broadband for landlines. Just like you can't talk and surf the web and talk on the phone on dialup but can on DSL. It's simply a matter of bandwidth.
To explain this in a more simple matter, 3g is essentially a CDMA connection. Being that CDMA carriers use said transmission for voice, they cannot use data and voice simultaneously. However, with t-mobile and at&t, voice is transmitted over the GSM radio and a 2nd radio is present which carries the CDMA 3g technology. If said GSM device looses that 3g service and falls back to edge or gprs, the simultaneous voice and data becomes inoperable. The key part to this is that a 2nd radio transmission takes place to allow the simultaneous transmission of both services. I have often wondered, however, why other carriers like sprint and Verizon don't incorporate a 2nd radio in their devices to simultaneously connect two CDMA transmissions similar to how a TIVO/DVR box works with cable/satellite services to allow the viewing of one channel while recording another. This functionality would allow them to compete with the GSM carriers.
cdma gsm
I know that when I used to work for ATTWS (long time ago), they were freaking out about the new carriers rolling in with CDMA (some with hybrid AMPS and D-AMPS 850 mhz spectrum) because, in theory CDMA should wax TDMA's call load significantly. TDMA, at that time could only hold 3 calls per channel. So about (here comes a geeky number) every 6.67 ms the calls on the channel would switch functions. Only one could TX, one could RX, and the other was Idle.... this was all transparent to the caller of course.. CDMA rolls around with the theory that becasue it's data piggy backed on the channel, it would increase their call handling ability 10 fold. Unfortunately theory didn't work out to real work practicality b/c the new PCS CDMA carriers really had about the same call capacity as everyone else.
Now, I've always touted VZW speeds here in my market bc TMO didn't even have 3g here till like 6 months to a year ago.. .and AT&T's 3G was laugable here in Jacksonville...might as well have kept the E or G icons on the phone for as slow as things ran.... HSDPA and UMTS could put a cramp on VZWs claim to speed...as long as they can get it consistent nationwide... I'd be tempted to leave for the right data speeds.....but for now, I'm in love with my overpriced VZW plan because of the coverage, quality, and speed..... who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Sorry for the long post, but it takes a bit to explain it.. (even though most of you know it.)
Thanks,
Nate

Yes my phone shows H when I'm trying to surf and talk. I think since I have a cooked rom, it may have altered my stock internet configuration and proxy settings or something and now it doesnt work.....idunno......thats my guess. Hoping one of you guys have the answer.
Thats definitely the problem make sure proxy is off and your connections setting are going to the MEdiaNet server and that should fix it.

[Q] Not using wifi?

In my work developing an App for localized radar information, I find that when I need information from the internet, my phone doesnt use the wifi, but relys on data usage. My house's wifi is unsecured, and my phone is always connected when in range, but where I do my developing in the house there is scant 3g coverage and mostly Edge coverage. (Kinda inbetween towers where I live)
For example, my Weatherbug App will not load (and sometimes lock up) unless the signal indicator says H or 3G or 4G, while being connected to wifi.
I am new to mobile OS so is there something I am doing wrong or something I have not set on the phone?
I have a very weak signal in my apartment. My phone constantly bounces between no signal and 1 or 2 bars. I find that my DVP works much better when I manually turn off the data connection in the Cellular settings when I want to use wifi as my primary connection.
Your DVP says H or 4G? If so, you have soemhing the rest of us do not..
Sent from my Venue Pro using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Yeah my carrier put a 4g sim into my DVP and upgraded the radio...Works too, I didnt believe it when I first heard it.

Err .. That's normal, and I'm pretty sure it happens with almost all phones and network providers. Your Data Connection will cut out if you make or receive a phone call. Nohting to do with your phone. Use wifi if you want to maintain a connection.

I think any phone with 2 radios can do it just fine. I'm not sure I've tried with the g2, but my gnex and even thunderbolt could, both on vzw. att phones had this ability for years before lte (and the second radio it required) provided it for Verizon. att even ran iPhone commercials pointing this out, since the 3g vzw iPhone only had one radio and couldn't talk and use data simultaneously.

Yeah I agree, a second radio would be required .. which could be why it worked with your Sensation. Unfortunately I don't think any phones over here in the UK have 2 radios as I have had this issues wih ALL of my phones. It's the norm over here.

I believe, but may be mistaken, that the VZW, ATT, and TMo flavors all have 2 radios while the Sprint G2 does not, as their new Spark network combines voice and data onto one radio. This is what I've gathered from reading other forums but have no concrete proof. I believe I once talked on my G2 while using the GPS when driving, which would obviously require data.
What provider is the OP on? Looks like he has a D802, which is the INT model, right?

It is normal in 2G (GPRS or EDGE) to loose data connection during a call...this is the GSM standard...3G is a different standard, it supposed to keep the data connection during a call - voice data is CS (circuit switch, a GSM stadard call), data connection is PS (packet switch, different circuit in phone).
All 3G phones have similar build so CS and PS are completely separate - if you are still losing data connection during a call could be a network issue, not a phone issue.
In 4G is a different situation, at least for the moment - this is still in development, the voice is still in 2G or 3G, not in 4G.

Sprints LTE on phones prior to tri-band had no issues with simultaneous data/calls. The implementation of these tri-band phones has changed the protocol used. They now use CSFB (circuit switched fallback) and this requires the phone to fallback from LTE when a call is made or received. This prevents any data to transmit during a call.

I know, I red about on the net - as I am living in Europe I don't have this problem - from the begining the European providers used CSFB and eCSFB (they are trying now to develop VoLTE, this is the next step) - I was talking about VOLDOR issue - he mentioned about some problems in 2G and 3G, not in LTE...on another hand he has a GSM+LTE version of the phone, not CDMA+LTE (Sprint) - Sofware Version : D80220a-HKG-XX (Hong Kong - http://www.lg.com/hk_en/mobile-phones/lg-D802)
Sorry, but i'm still a bit lost : Am i having the issue because i have an Hong Kong Version of the phone ? is it an hardware limitation ? Should i try a Europeean ROM Version (i'm living in France, and without changing of provider it was working on my previous HTC Sensation)
I have this issue too. Works fine on my HTC One M7, but when I use the simcard in the verizon G2, no data.
I used LTE Discovery - turns out that when you're connected the LTE and call out, the G2 starts the call on 2G. My M7 starts the call on 3G or H, so I have data and voice on my M7. I am looking for a way to fix this too...

i'm using the following version of the LG G2 ;
Android Version : 4.4.2
Band base: M8974-AAAANAZM-1.0.190084

Build Number :KOT491.D80220a

and each time i'm having a phone call, i'm loosing the Data Connection (3G or 3G+ or Edge )
What would you recommend to fix this (annoying because i can't use waze for example while having a phone call with bluetooth in my car)

data network work during call

Err .. That's normal, and I'm pretty sure it happens with almost all phones and network providers. Your Data Connection will cut out if you make or receive a phone call. Nohting to do with your phone. Use wifi if you want to maintain a connection.
