Multitasking limitations of HTC Imagio? - Imagio General

AT&T claims that Verizon 3G doesn't permit web data searches at the same time that a voice phone connection is going on. Is that true? Why? How inconvenient is this? Is there any problem multitasking data activities, e.g., downloading email while downloading a web page?

short answer is yes
Verizon and AT&T use different technologies. Verizon CDMA. AT&T uses GSM. CDMA doesn't allow voice and data simultaneously. However, it is really a non issue as most people don't surf the web and talk on the phone at the same time. It's really not that intuitive to do. But, multitasking in general is reliant on the phone's operating system. Winmo allows for multi tasking and HTC helps it be even more managable with their task master tool and the addition of allowing the "X" to either close programs or minimize them.
Basically, AT&T is just mad about VZW's "there's a map for that" commercials and because their lawsuit was thrown out. What AT&T doesn't tell you is that their most popular phone, the iphone, doesn't allow multi tasking of any kind and that is by apple's design.
edit: To answer you about data: you can email and surf the web with no problem as they both use data connection.

I wonder if you use both the CDMA and GSM radios can you talk and surf at the same time?

Verizon is CDMA only, and ATT is GSM only. You can turn on GSM and CDMA at the same time, but only one will be used depending on the network.

Hmmm, does this mean that I need to hang up the call if I need to do a Google search? Say someone calls me and wants to meet me at a specific bar... do I need to hang up do a Google search for the bar location and call them back to tell them that I now know how to get there?... With my AT&T phone I do this without having to hang up the call. I also reference Yelp based on My GPS Location frequently as I talk to friends via speaker phone about restaurants or bars near by. I guess this requires two way data and GPS location to work simultaneously... Can the Imagio do this?

my .02 is if you are on the phone with a friend or business associate and they invite you somewhere that you dont know the location of, ask them. i would be pretty offended if on a personal or business call the other person was tapping away at their phone browsing the web. i get my texts during calls thats enough for me. and like it was said, their most popular phone, the iphone cant even multi-task.

So, if you call someone to ask them for a phone number that's stored in their phone... you'd would rather have them hang up and call you back because you'd be "offended" by the tapping as they search for the phone number you asked for? I get a few calls a week from people asking me for phone numbers... I open my contacts list, find the number and give to them... without hanging up... so far, no one has been offended. When I do a Google search while talking, as a matter of courtesy, I let the person on the other end know what I'm doing. Btw, I don't own an iPhone.

If I make a phone call to ask specifically for information that is traditionally and typically stored in a phone, I obviously wouldnt be offended. The example regarded a very specific situation: pointless internet searches (ie: googling an address instead of asking the person who you are currently on the phone with that invited you) its simply poor conversation skills to say "hang on im going to use the internet while i keep you on the phone" instead of "wheres joes bar again?"

I hardly ever talk on my phone and I don't think I've ever even thought of using my data connection while on the phone.
Seems kinda stupid to me anywho

You neglected to add that in A LOT of cities your phone can't even get a signal to talk or go on the web to help anyone find something.

Let's no compare apples to oranges... I know and understand the shortcomings of the AT&T's network signal and the inability of some so-called Smartphones that do not multitask... For me a Smartphone is a device that allows me accomplish several tasks. Having the ability to perform some of these tasks simultaneously (assuming voice/data signal availability) is what I'm talking about. If I'm talking on the phone and the person on the other end wants a picture or a document that I have stored on my phone... I like the convenience of being able to send it without having to hang up. It's not a show-stopper for me, but it's a nice feature to have.

I do not assume that what anyone else wants to do with their phone is "pointless". I use my phone features in certain ways and you can use yours as you please. Some devices are a better fit for you and others for me. As I look for a replacement for my AT&T phone and want to find out the +/- of the devices that appeal to me.... I ask questions about their features.
Poor conversation skills? You are assuming quite a bit about the specific situation I mentioned... The person that called me did not know how to get to the bar... I Goggled it and found the directions from the location where he originated the call. I helped him get to where we were going to meet... Poor communications skills?... Doubt it... I did it all without having to interrupt the conversation.

Totally legit scenario tamanaco, and I'm with you. I just did a quick test calling my desk phone. I was able to multitask on my Imagio while connected (e.g. was able to navigate to contacts to look up a phone #, launch apps, etc.). BUT I was not able to use a data connection. I was able to launch the Opera browser, but was not able to navigate to any web page successfully. So forget looking up directions online while talking.
FWIW, I haven't run across this issue in the real world, but none-the-less it bums me out a little that I can't do voice & data at the same time.

You _can_ launch any other application, including looking up phone numbers in your contact list, while on the Imagio.
One cute feature is that if you pull out the stylus while on the phone, it automatically launches the notepad app, with the person's name, number and time of call filled in. Then you can write notes either with the stylus or type them in. Pretty handy, especially if you're in a field that needs diagrams. You can also add a recording.
You just can't search on the internet for those numbers while talking. Well, unless you're using a VoIP app like Skype. Then you can do both voice and data simultaneously even on Verizon. I've done it.

Substitute GSM Codes for Slydial?

Does anyone know how to directly use GSM Codes to accomplish what Slydial does? My problem with Slydial is that you're providing them with 2 valid phone numbers with each use.
I assume by the way you phrased it, that you believe SlyDial is going to sell the numbers to people?
And just to let people know, SlyDial is a service that connects directly to the voicemail of someone, without having to ring, so you can leave a voicemail without them getting a missed call, sorta thing.
when i tried it, it also made a missed call on the recepients phone.

Not necessarily, but the potential is there. For similar privacy concerns, I also wouldn't use any of the online PC backup solutions being offered (I do sector-by-sector image backups locally, FWIW).
The point is that I was presuming that they were inserting some sort of code (GSM?) before completing your call, and that we should be able to send that code ourselves, from our own phones for free, before dialing the phone numbers (yes, I know the offered service is free if you don't mind listening to a 15-sec ad). I just don't know the how to do it. A pretty good synopsis of Slydial is available at BetaNews.

Call and Browse at the same time(Google Voice)??

Can you make non-long distance calls using google voice and your phone???
If so, can you be on that call and browse the web at the same time??
So technically, If you use google voice for the call you are using data and not voice, therefore it seems technically possible to browse and talk at the same time.
Has anyone tried this??? I only have google voice for voicemail so cant test right now.
before you assume that GV automatically defaults to using the data connection why don't you search around a bit...
now, with that being said... once you have managed to get GV operating through Data (it is possible) im not sure if you could call and surf at the same time or not

Since with Google voice you can make calls from your computer, it is easy to assume that it uses data.
now, with that being said... why would you bother replying and telling me to search around when you yourself don't know the answer to my question??
fyi: I am searching... and when I find out, I will share it with anyone who wants to know. That's what this place is all about.
This was easy enough to find on Google.

google voice does not use data. it uses your sprint number.
basically when someone calls your GV it forwards calls to your cell number (or whatever number you want it to), then your sprint number rings. and when you dial out it calls from your sprint number to GV then GV forwards it (the call) to the party on the other end.
it can be set up to use data but is difficult to do and call quality over EVDO or 1x is bad. wifi its ok.
here are a few guides i'm using atm to get this set up over data, i can get incoming calls working but outgoing calls aren't working. i'm this close...
if you set this up like this, then YES you will be able to call and use the internet at the same time. but just using the GV app no its not possible on sprint. it's the way the network is set up. other networks you can but not on sprint.

Removing Phone Svc / Keeping Data? [$50 Bounty]

I use a mobile application on my Incredible for work, and have no use for the phone number. I figured that by not giving the device's phone number out, this would result in a peaceful state where I could work without being bothered.
Unfortunately, I get about 3 calls (wrong numbers) a day, which cause me to escape out of my business' application.
Is there some way to disable the phone capability, while retaining the ability to use Verizon's mobile data network?
In other words, I'd still be using Verizon's network, I just don't want the phone-call feature. Neither for incoming OR outgoing.
I've searched but cannot find anything.
Thank you in advance!
-RKM
Added $50 Bounty for any suggestions that do the trick.
We have an in-house app running on DInc's and we desperately need this because .. wrong-numbers keep disrupting our user's workflow.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/mr-number-call-block/com.mrnumber.blocker
http://www.appbrain.com/app/blacklist/org.baole.app.blacklist
Would either of these apps work?
Switch the device to a data only plan maybe?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Thank you for the reply.
@Andassaran - There does not seem to be such a thing as a "data only plan" with Verizon, according to them. They claim I have to maintain phone service as well.
@cuban11182 - As far as an *app* that stops calls, the best we've found is "Call Blocker Elite"; however, this still really isn't an ideal solution because it breaks the user out of their app.
Ideally... I would like to have a script that disables the phone-related apps, or does something so that incoming calls cannot come through, while leaving everything else in a working state.
If this is possible using a script that can be run on ROOT'ed phones to disable or "freeze" certain things, that would be fine too! Currently ... We run Titanium Donation on all phones, and I could freeze something if I knew it was not going to cause other problems.
Thank you again for your suggestions!

Your best bet is probably to crack open the phone.apk and see if there's a line of code dealing with this in there. I'm pretty sure there is, just can't remember where exactly and I don't have my laptop with me.

PonsAsinorem - This is exactly the type of thing I'm looking for, would be happy to send the bounty if you can help me follow this to find a working solution.. Just one question to get started:
(1) Where do I get a source-code version of phone.apk for the DInc? And, do I have to be sure I'm using a special version based on my radio version?
Thank you,
RKM
Phone.apk is a file in your system/app directory. Based on, or in rather, your ROM, not your radio. It's been a minute since I've tweaked it, I'm almost useless right now at walking an inexperienced person through it without my laptop. Ihtfp69 is a lot more experienced at this, he just might help you if you ask nicely.
Pons- I'm sorry, I don't think I explained properly.
I'm aware of Phone.apk and its location, no problem there.
I was asking about (and am confused on this point): That .apk files are binaries that I cannot modify, and I have no idea where I'd get a source-code version of Phone.apk?
Within the apk itself is a classes.dex file which you use smali and baksmali to compile and decompile. So yes, you can modify it, but it does take a little effort. The hard part is figuring out what line does what.
if you have Titanium Backup Pro, use the freeze function to Freeze Phone.apk/Dialer.apk, this should work. If it stops working, flash back to a nandroid backup, which you should make before trying this.
Swyped from my HTC Desire running AuraxTSense 8.2 with Tapatalk.
I went to verizonwireless.com and choose change plan, then they had a messaging only plan. It was a plan just for unlimited messaging, don't know if you could add data to it, you would still have a phone number, but I don't think you can get calls, just txts.
@Pons- Perfect, thank you. I've tried Baksmali in the past, but the results were pretty obfuscated and I could not make sense of the output.
BTW - something just occurred to me ... will something other than phone.apk be responsible for receiving/fielding calls, then running phone.apk upon the "new call" event?
In an ideal world (if I'm going to be modifying apk's rather than simply enabling/disabling a setting), I'd like to only disable incoming calls. But.. It occurred to me the simple phone.apk mod would be in exiting/disabling outgoing calls.
@BodenM - I'm a bit sketchy about freezing phone (mentioned earlier), and was hoping to only use that in a worst-case scenario. If I cannot determine how to properly alter Phone.apk, I'll look for phone.apk again under Titanium (didn't find it the first time).
@TNS201 - That's an interesting idea. Perhaps there is a way of having a phone number, yet not receiving calls. If Pons idea doesn't work, and Titanium doesn't work, this will be my backup-plan. Thank you!
if you can't find phone.apk, try looking for "Dialer" or something similar.

Forward the VZ phone# to a bad phone number. Then callers will hear a carrier error. I believe this also keeps your phone from ringing, even keeps it from ringing once.
Your airtime on forwarded calls would be miniscule.
How to Use It
To Activate:
Press *72. Enter the phone number where you want calls to be forwarded. (e.g. *72-908-123-4567).
Press SEND and wait for confirmation. You should hear a confirmation tone or a message.
Press END.
To Deactivate:
Press *73. Press SEND and wait for confirmation. You should hear a confirmation tone or a message.*
Pess END.
Call Forwarding
Description
Forward your calls to another phone number, including your home or office number. Your wireless phone will not ring until you deactivate the service. Airtime applies to forwarded/transferred calls even if you send the call to wireline telephones. When forwarding calls to phone numbers outside your local calling area, you'll be billed for any toll, long distance, and airtime charges incurred. Additional per-minute charges may apply to all forwarded calls. This feature is also known as "Immediate Call Forwarding".
exactly what I was going to say

Exactly what I wasx going to say. If you don't wan't calls and don't give out the number, just have all calls FWDed to another #. No?

UPDATE:
Regarding a "Messaging Only" plan.
With 3G "Smartphones" (eg Android handsets), Verizon *only* available if medically Deaf or Mute, and they require a doctor's note.
Regarding the Fowarding. The first Verizon rep I had spoken with (about a year ago) claimed it was an extra cost. I just tried the instructions available on the web and so far it seems to be working. I wonder if this will remain active permanently without resetting itself. If so, this may be the best solution, despite being the most obvious..
Your forwarding wil utilize air time, which you have a set amount if minutes anyway. You will not exceed these minutes, so it wil l not cost you anything more than you are already paying. VZ does have an unadvertised plan of $50/mo, maybe even lower unadvertised plans, today.
This wil be awesome for you.
I'm luvit and I endorse this message.
How do I go about locating the "unadvertised" plan?
The reason I ask, I searched the 'net and spoke with 3 different Verizon reps today, and not one of them gave me any option for a data/messaging-only plan.
Another way you could do it, is use do not disturb call forwarding. It on your line already you just call VZW and have them enable it. I did this for one of my kids phone . The silence was bliss. Anyway just a thought.
Edit: sorry the last few post didn't load so I miss this already being discussed.

Do You Use Google Voice?

In reading the forums here for a while now, it seems like hardly anyone uses Google Voice for anything. This surprises me, since I've always used GV and I can't imagine not using it. I mean, it lets you read/write/manage your SMS messages on your computer (ie I don't have to pull out my phone to text people if I'm at my computer), lets you make/receive calls straight to your computer (ie I don't have to pull my phone out necessarily if I want to make/receive a call and I'm at my computer), calls made/received on your computer don't count against your minutes, and if you happen to still have a MyFaves plan (and I know several of you do) you can set GV as one of your Faves and have all calls made/received with your handset free as well. The only problem I've ever had with it is that it sends/receives SMS messages over your data network, so if you're somewhere where the data connection is clogged (like I was when I was at a music festival recently), you can't send/receive texts. Even so, with all these advantages (some of them pretty huge IMO), why does it seem like no one uses it?
So, do you? If not, why not?

Not perfect, many things I would like improved, but definitely worth it for me.

I'm curious, what would you like to see improved? Personally, I'd like to be able to send mass texts from my phone, and to be able to send/receive MMS. I know you can send "mass" (to like five recipients, which, I mean, I've never needed to send a text to more than five people, so that's worked fine for me) texts through GV on a computer, but I can't get it to work on my phone.
I use it for international calls, international TXTing (no longer avail.), and craigslist or similar type of communication with people I don't want to share my real phone no. with.
I also use it in conjunction with Gizmo5 when I'm overseas. Sometimes I use this method when my minutes approach the limit.
MMS please! It's about time. This is the only reason why I still have to use my actual phone number.

Or you could use email. Or you could upload the picture to dropbox and SMS a dropbox link. Or you could share on any of the other numerous photoshare sites. There's a million ways around the MMS issue if you need to send some crucial media message, but I agree that it would be nice to have the functionality regardless.
We need pitcher messages, at least pitcher hosting so other people can just click the link. I use Google Voice but it's not perfect, it's not that fast.. it needs to be faster.
I just use it for the vm to text. That's pretty handy. I don’t have to talk to or even listen to people anymore!

First I love GV. I have it routed to my home via sip, my cell with the GV app and when I'm traveling with the client built into gmail.
Improvement:
1. MMS would be great. Yes, I could use the cell or gmail but... it would be nice if it were incorporated into GV.
2. The GV organization for messaging (both the app and website) is well, basic. I don't get why all texts from one person can not stay in one convo. Makes it harder to find old text messages.
3. I would like to see more way to initiate conference calls
4. international calls could be cheaper. Yes they are cheaper than skype but that is not cheap... On my phone I use the voxofon app and at home voip with callwithus.
5. petty maybe, but I wish I could adjust the time before VM kicks in.

I would also *love* to have all my texts from a single person organized into per-person threads, and wonder why there's not a simple way to do this.
This is kind of interesting...

Need MMS and also we REALLY need an alternative GV app.
Maybe one day Go SMS, Chomp or Handcent will support GV. That would be nice.
I love it and use it for my voicemail.
I have a Seattle number that most of my friends know, but upon moving to Arizona, being able to have an AZ local number was a big plus. Now I can have 2 numbers on one cell and not have to update any of my long-term contacts of a number change or any of that nonsense.
I use it, but I don't really love it.
I do not like their voicemail service AT ALL, however I like the convenience of giving people my google voice number, people whom I don't necessarily like
I use it for all my vmails, and for texting. I may even lower my texting package from tmo soon to save a few bucks. I can block people easily, can set custom greetings for different groups of people, and I can even use my bluetooth to make phone calls via my PC bypassing the need for a big voice package.
I use it for voicemail primarily and its the number I give out to businesses and people I don't really care to talk to so I can screen the calls. I also use it more when I don't have my phone on me or im on the computer
Sexy Vibrant featuring Nero V3 w/Voodoo, and FFC installed

I used to use it but I found it redundant and some people didn't appreciate having to keep up with so many phone numbers (GV, Business, Real Vibrant number). It doesn't support MMS so that made it hard to use exclusively.
Plus, I could do without those services running in the background.
It's nice for when you're selling stuff on CraigsList and don't want to give your real number, though.
I do hate Google for making it impossible for us to take our numbers off without giving another real number, or removing Google Voice from our Google Account.
But a quick phone number change took care of that.
I use it for texting some people that i dont want to have my real tmo number.I still have the unlimited texts....i've been thinking of dropping unlimited texting from my plan. I wish I had myfaves so I could have unlimited free calling with it...gotta find a way to get myfaves...hope tmo brings it back.
Its also great for using online, for example, Craigslist etc. Overall I think its great and I can't wait for more innovative features to be added.

SMS/TXT on xoom

This may be a dumb question, but does anyone know if sending/receiving txts would be possible from a wifi only xoom? I imagine it would work in gtalk, but I would like if there was a way to do it from handcent or something. Likely I will be either connected to my house wifi/work wifi/tether from my D1. If my phone isnt in my hand, but my Xoom is, id rather reply/send a text from the xoom, rather than screwing around with what device is where, I would like to use the xoom if thats whats in my hand at the time.
Anyone think there is a shot at this?
Only other guess I would have is that I think my phone has a sms backup that automatically saves a text into my gmail. The Xoom would need to set up to notify me of a new email (not hard to do), however my replies would then be sent as an email, which might not work the best....
I would assume google voice would work. It sends SMS out through data rather than as an actual SMS, so it should work. But, I do not know since I dont have a xoom, ha.
Google voice shouldn't be a problem. I'd imagine it works like any other android device.
i will add this question to "for those on the borderline, what do you want to know" thread and we will find out if it works with google voice. handcent probably wont work as there has to be a text messaging app already i believe

Yes, but that is likely the only option.
im sure someone will make an app that will link to your phone and let you remote control your texts from the xoom

Yes and no. You would essentially be porting your number to google and would then need to get a new number from your cell provider. You may be hit with an ETF if you are still on contract though.
In it's simplest form, Google Voice is essentially a forwarding service. You have a number with GV that will forward calls and texts to the phones that you have set up. For example, I have my Nexus One (personal), iPhone (work) and office phone configured. WHen someone calls my GV number, it rings all three phones. When I get a text, it is forwarded to any mobile device with GV installed and set up with my account.
What about VoIP using Google Voice on the Xoom?

I hope so, because I dont want to use a different (GV) phone number, and I am not interested in porting my number; messing up my contract...
If anyone knows any good developers, ask them if they think some type of program is even possible. It would be worth a few bucks
You know what.. and I really hope this becomes the solution.. it just seems to make sense. Does anybody know about that Sony Ericson bluetooth device that comes with a strap to look like a watch? And it kind of gets data from your android phone such as text messages, weather, incoming/missed calls etc.
So you keep your phone in your pocket, but have all the info you may want to check right on your wrist.
If you could just sync your android tablet with your android phone through BT, just like that SE product, so you can use its data connection, receive/respond to text messages, that would be awesome. I can see a problem in this where carriers want to double dip by making u get a separate plan for each, but with wireless hotspot it doesn't even matter. It just makes everything more convenient.
Maybe its just me, but something like this would be a HUGE feature in my eyes. Plus, it gives people a reason to use not one but two android devices. Win-Win for Google, and users who like both products.

I agree. I'm trying to hold out on the WiFi-only version as well, and I would love to be able to answer text messages on my Xoom. Swyping on my Evo is really easy, but not having to switch devices would definitely be worth a few bucks!

hahahahaha so crazy you say that. Back in 2004 I almost dropped out of college to attempt to patent the watch like idea.. after consulting with a friend whose dad was a patent attorney, he said there were some similar ideas floating around, and the risk likely wouldnt be worth it.. Regardless, for my MBA last year, we had to create a new product. When I shared this idea with my group members, and told them how it was an idea I came up with back in 2004, we went with it, was a fun class project!
Oh yeah, here is the link

For what it is worth, my Galaxy Tab let's me send texts from the Galaxy Tab phone number.
Another reason I went with Sprint over Verizon. Sprint was $29.99 for 5GB and unlimited messaging versus Verizon which was $20 for 1GB and no messaging.
I'm kind of bummed the Xoom won't be on Sprint initially, but oh well...I don't really *need* another number to text from.
Is it possible to insert your mobile's sim card into the tablet and be able to use the data of your existing phone contract?

This is a CDMA device. I don't think there is a sim card slot.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The Xoom is CDMA, but there is a (micro, I believe) sim card slot. It will be used when verizon rolls out 4g. Unfortunately this doesn't mean that GSM sim cards can be used.
another way of maybe doing it is if we got something like "MyMobiler" for android, and a version that rather pc viewing cell, tablet viewing cell..
Its things like this that make me wish I was a programmer not involved in finance.. haha
