Ok, so I installed the HTC Messaging fix, not sure if that did this or whether it did it before, but here goes...
I know this may be discussed else where, but this is progress on the issue at least and hopefully this might spark a few ideas rather than people just advising "it doesn't work, HTC sux"
** I think this does fix the lag, in a round about way **
Ok, bare with me on this...
I installed the update and it fixed nothing for me, I'm mainly having issues with the lag on messaging.
I noticed in Task Manager (installed Dutty's) that the Messaging app is called "Start" which is when I load messages from HTC Sense UI. Loading this way, still got the lag.
If I disable HTC Sense UI and load messages, its instant. Yes the messages still load down the side but I can now tap and create a new message while this is loading. SPOT ON, FIXED!
Ok, now in Task Manager I notice this is called "HTC Messaging", not "Start", so I'm thinking, cool, its reset the messaging app and sorted it out. So I enable HTC Sense UI again and back to same problem, this loads "Start".
So.... I first installed the hotfix with Sense UI enabled, which didn't resolve the problem unless Sense UI wasn't on.
I've tried installing again with Sense UI disabled, but I have the same issue.
So yes, the problem is fixed in a way, but it is Sense UI that seems to be loading this "Start" messaging app.
Can someone else try this to confirm? Or can some really clever person fix what I've started...?
Edit -- It happens all the time now, I disable HTC Sense UI and the Messaging program changes its name when loaded. WTF? Come on guys, let me know if you have the same issues.
Wow. 51 views and not 1 person has posted back to say whether turning their HTC Sense UI off has resolved this problem.
Come on!!!
It did...
It does solve the problem... Plus it makes a full charge last aprox. 40% longer, oh yeah and also generally speeds up everything on the phone.
I've written this to HTC but who knows if they listen. It has also been posted a couple of times in this forum.

I think I tried posting this in one of dcd's rom threads but it got lost in the thousands of posts so I figured I would pull it out into a main thread...
What is up with WM closing out (crashing) background apps once you launch new ones? it's supposed to keep this stuff opened until you close it! Even if I have only 1 app opened, say Resco Pocket Radio.. and I try to go into a text message.. it will crash Resco... or if I have a PIE window open and I switch to a file browser it will crash PIE...
Is this a wm thing... wm6.1 thing or... dcd thing... or what?
I would really think this has been addressed before but I can't seem to find anything through search...
thanks
Are you using HTC X-Button or QuickMenu that may be closing your apps? Jus a thought
no htc x-button but I am using quickmenu... but that is only supposed to close the apps when u click the X in the corner... apps are closing by just launching from a notification... hard button.. or other launch method
Havn't seen that before... the only thing i can think of is double check quickmenu settings or try a hard reset, or maybe even cook a new rom. One time with a particular custom rom my text messages never made a sound -- but every other sound worked. I cook a new rom and it fixed it
i guess if no one else sees this problem it has to be something I have loaded on my device... im going to start removing things to see if i can determine the culprit... im starting with quickmenu
wow i dont think I've ever used regular start menu before but isn't it supposed to show apps that are currently loaded in memory? mine seems to be showing a list of last used apps... has like 10 things in there then program/settings...
not to be mistaken with frequenters (set in settings->menu), I have that list empty... strange!

I'm having a problem with PIE. I'll open my text messages, then go back to PIE only to have it re-open back on the homepage. It is very annoying when I'm in the middle of something and just wanna respond to a text message.
I noticed it has to do with apps that are active on the broadband network, which leads me to believe it was radio-related...
I went back to 1.4 & 1.7.0 and no crashes or anything... starting to think this combo is more stable anyways. new radios just don't seem to work all that well on verizon, at least in my experience
ok so this phone is the best phone i have had.. except who ever tested the text messaging app must not have alot of friends..
i get about 20 people in the list of messages and my whole phone messes up..
i click one guy and the message gets sent to the guy at the bottom of the list.
you gotta really watch out, because it has the right name but the wrong number.
when i click messages from someone with more then 20 it takes 20 seconds to load them up and sometimes when i go back to the today screen the phone crashes..
sometimes i hear the text message sound and i have no new messages..
come to find out the message went ON TOP of the list from that sender.. not on the bottom.
sometimes the indicator that you have a new message never goes away, even after you read it..
anyone else having huge text problems?
first of all great title
im completely with you mate the texting on this phone is a joke
who's clever idea was it to load every single text every time you want to send 1?
plus the keyboard lag is a royal pain in the ass especially as im a fast typer
i have had no problems with sending texts to wrong people however, i think, maybe some people are having a real laugh at my expense..
i hope it gets fixed soon
i just dont understand how an iphone, with some 400mhz processor is 100x smoother than this phone
there must be some real fault somewhere

that was really funny.
ROM 1.66 fixed much of this, but still known bugs remain - as reported in this forum.
You were lucky not to be around in Dec 09, when you had to soft reset every time you sent an sms which got 'stuck' in the Outbox!!!

i forgot to put in that is the tmobile US HD2..
The HTC messaging app is not meant for hardcore text messagers. To stop it from loading every message, you can tap on a message then hit back.
One of the solutions is to disable the HTC messaging and use the default WM6.5 threaded SMS. Google search "disable HTC messaging" and look for Zenyee's CAB to disable it, then look in the WM Theme forum here to find some nice looking WM SMS themes.
The other solution is to disable HTC messaging and use something like BsB Tweaks to enable SMS classic mode, which takes you to an older version of the SMS app when you tap on a message in the messaging tab, that doesn't lag like the new one does, but it doesn't look as nice.

I send 100-150 texts a day, and receive just as much.
I never have any problems.
i use full QWERTY and texting speed is quite nice. I mean, multi-touch keyboard would be NICE, but it gets the job done for now.
As much as TMOUS stock ROM fixed lots of glitches, it still doesn't beat most of the ROMs cooked by chefs here.
Try flashing (at your own risk, of course), then see how much your phone has evolved.
Have you tried changing it from conversation mode to traditional mode?
Menu, settings, traditional mode
are there any different messaging clients which can be used instead?
I have a problem. Whenever someone sends me a picture mail i receive the message but the picture does not come up. the only thing there is a button that says download and you click on it and it says downloading but nothing happens. Any thoughts on what i should do?
So I'm guessin your running one of the Cyanogen or AOSP roms. I've found these just don't do picturemail all that well. I can get static pics but no animated gifs on these roms. I've never had a problem on any of the Sense roms (Not sure about Sense hd).
If your having issues on a stock Sense build, this may be a phone problem.
yeah its cyanogen. i dont even see the static picture. do u know a good sense rom to get? i would love to try one that is good.
Thanks,
fresh evo 3.5 is pretty good. i just switched from that to cm because i want to used a bt keyboard and wii remote on my phone.
fresh is pretty quick.
i think you will like it

I get the same problem with Myn's Warm. I think it may be a phone issue.
I have the same problem and made a thread if you want to check it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10197958
basically the only fix i have found for now is when you get the download button, open a task killer and kill the "messages" and "message uploader" processes then go back into the message and hit download and it will come up. From what I can tell it is for sure a sprint issue. I have had the problem before i even rooted and its continued no matter which rom i use or which wimax/radios either.
OP, are you running handcent? i have the same "problem" but i thought it was just a setting in handcent.
I have the same issue, of course my cell phone provider told me to do a hard reset, I can send picture messages, but can't recieve them.
I get this sometimes too. Usually dropping to 3g will fix it. If that doesn't work, a reboot will do. It tends to happen when I've gone a long time without rebooting.
I"ve had the problem on different phonies, different ROMS, different MODS> Sprint says there's a ticket out the MMS problem.... for what it's worth
Hey guys, just a quick question to see if anyone else is experience the home screen reload that is infamous with Sense on older phones like G1/Magic etc.
I've had the magic since it came out and upgraded to DHD, but have recently been having the same issues, where the home screen reloads, get the big HTC white with green.
Any certain apps to help with this? or perhaps that are causing this?
Appreciate your response
Hmm yes I get this too sometimes. But it only ever happens when I'm either listening to music for hours or have changed some setting in the phone, I don't think there is a fix to be honest but I could be wrong. Maybe gingerbread will fix this ?

This happens to me too, but it only happens when i 'mistreat' my phone. i.e. when i open an app,and be4 its finished opening i press the home button ... or something like that
i think this htc screen comes because maybe an error occurred with the sense UI or something and thats their way of handling the error.
i personally dont think its a problem, rather a solution to a problem, so dont be scared.
fyi: no one told me this, it just makes sense to me, since it only happens when i mistreat my phone....maybe they made a different way to handle this with their new Sense UI: 3.0.
im so hyper about it!!, and im hoping that it'll come with the new update!!!!
It happens to me as well but my home screen reloads when I kills some apps

Quick question, do you all have "Spare Parts" installed?
spare parts?
Yes, spare parts. If Activity/Process Management is set to aggresive it will produce the same issue your post is describing.
I remembered a similar issue a while ago, read through THIS thread (11 posts) and let me know if the screenshot looks similar.
Those with this problem, try uninstall the Flash 10.2 update, reboot your phone and see if its solved.

No, the DHD has plenty of RAM. Its a badly configured task killer.
it happens to me sometimes though I haven't chose anything in spare parts (it shows empty normal and aggressive check box) and I don't have any task killer (well I have a program called ZDbox which has the ability to kill apps you select) and when it happens it doesn't stop unless you restart your phone.I think a certain app is causing this but I don't know which

A few weeks ago i had this problem with Flash 10.2. There was a memory leak and as a result android was killing all apps and even killed Sense as a result of Flash taking up more and more ram. So Flash 10.2 might be the culprit here. Check to see which version you have and uninstall the update.
so when you went back to 10.1,the issue was gone?

You would be correct sir/mam.
Hey guys, so I'm wondering if there is some sort of fix or mod I can do to make my home screen not reload all the time. It's frustrating going into an app for a second and going back to home and having it load which usually takes the majority of the time I have the phone on. Doesn't really matter what app I open, it will even do it coming from settings.
Now I did research this a bit and I don't have any task killers or many widgets on the home screen, to be honest, the stock oem home screen setup has more widgets and whatnot than I do. Can't I increase the cache size or something? Memory space has never been a problem with this phone, in fact I hardly even get over 100mb of used RAM. BTW, every ROM I've flashed has been like this, I'm hoping the stock ROM isn't like this too, its just plain annoying.
Thanks

Which rom do you want to use? You can possibly fix it with certain setting depending on which rom. Also are you just using the stock laucher that comes with each rom? Or do u install a preferred one?

He's talking like he's using Sense. To be clear, are you talking about widgets refreshing like with contacts, bookmarks, locations, weather, and the like? The best way to avoid information and widgets being refreshed all the time is to use as much memory as possible all of the time. What's you're looking at is the result of garbage collection... The kernel is tossing out items from memory that haven't been used in a certain amount of time or are assumed to be "stale" information. That kind of garbage collection is set to expire fairy quickly because the first time your calendar widget waits 2 or 3 hours to update and you missed your appointment or date, you'd really wish it didn't wait so long to refresh that data. I'm not sure what can be done to avoid that being the case, but I know it's been a minor irritation to some for a long time. I'm sure if there was an easy fix we'd have seen it by now from HTC themselves. It's commonly sited in reviews as a weakness of the UI compared to iFone.
Hey there,
Was wondering if anyone has found a fix for this yet.
I am having the same problem. If I enter any app and then go back to the home screen, I get the white screen with the green "HTC" logo, then the background appears and reloads everything. It has gotten to the point that every time I open an app it needs to reload. I recently factory reset and changed the SD card to try and fix it, but no luck.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post, hope there is a fix.
its because the sense roms its happening on arent meant for our device

I have stock sense and it happens to me every so often too. Maybe once a day so its barely noticable but I always wonder why it does it. Seems to be random and like other poster says I'm either backing out of settings or an app then the htc screen appears and the home page resets all the app icons. Only started doing this after the OTA so maybe something to do with memory management as previously stated in another post.

It hasn't done it in a very long time now. At least a week so not sure what was causing it. I did delete some apps, Netflix being one of them, that I no longer used but I never had Netflix running when it did it.
Problem was a task manager/quick launch app that turned my home button into more like an Alt-Tab. I have since reflashed a new Rom and haven't installed a task manager, and no problems at all. Must have been closing launcher causing it to reboot.
