I'm trying to do a few things to my phone (create gold card, free it from ROM lock in, throw on a new recovery image, and flash to a new ROM) but I noticed most of the guides are for windows... Is there a way to do any or all of these things on a Mac? The guide I was looking at is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581981
But it has all windows tools. I'd hate to have to install windows on this just to flash my phone.
Take a look at this post: mapleator.de/?p=19
That works for Mac and Linux-Users. Very simple

i have no pc with windows. can i update rom on my htc hero just from memory card like i did it with windows mobile on sony ericsson xperia? tnx
The only "official" way to update your Hero is via an HTC RUU, which requires Windows.
However, if you are able to replace the recovery image on your Hero without needing to "downgrade" your ROM, you will be able to update via a zip file on your SD card.
This is very much dependent on the version of the ROM you already have on your device.

Dave
tnx
oh thanx! nobody else was able to answer his, i asked on many forums. thanx a lot!
so i just open the file manager on my phone, find the recovery image and replace it, then just go to settings / security / factory data reset ?
where can i find that file on phone?
where can i download the "recovery image"
..if you know, please
Have a look at this guide.
Note that it relies on you getting the APK and recovery images on to your SD card, and in the guide it mentions using a PC, but I think if you download using the browser on your phone you should be ok. However, you may need to use an Android file manager to move the recovery image to the root of your SD card.
If this doesn't work, you have no option (I believe!) but to use a PC to downgrade via an RUU before you will be able to upgrade.
Regards,
Dave
Could you not do it via VM?
Yes you could, but I assume that when the OP says they don't have a PC with Windows, they mean they don't have access to any kind of PC with Windows, VM or no.
If they have access to a Mac, or a Linux PC, they'd be able to copy the APKs directly onto the SD card anyway.

Dave

or the operating system he is using... don't see the problem if he is using linux or mac, in fact any operating system that supports usb and has a compiler is suitable to do about anything you can do...
Hi all,
this is my first post.
I have just read that 2.2.1 is leaked out, so (remembering how long we waited for official froyo) i start do read to understand how to install new firmware.
NOT EASY!
Lot of docs, none of them for newbie at their first upgrade, so i think to write one myself.
What i need from you?
a) links
b) i'm using only mac, so i will try to avoid windows. bad start, 2.2.1 is a .exe, why?
Thanks in advance.
You're going to have to virtualize Windows with VMWare Fusion, Parallels or Virtualbox, or use Bootcamp.
You can use a program called heimdall if you want to flash firmwares with mac, im looking in to that too because i allso only have mac. Take a look here

I tried to extract that new .exe firmware with my friends windows pc and it extract 2 files (in directory) as .tar files. Dont know if you can use that files/firmware with Heimdall. I prefer allways the orginal one
I allso flashed the orginal firmware with my frieds pc and odin and the firmware is the best so far..in my opinion. Havent flash with mac yet..because I must study and learn how this program works
btw: This new firmware flash was mine first flash for galaxy s and it went perfect..huh
Hello everyone,
I've been trying for sometime over the past few days to restore my phone to functionality which I foolishly made useless. I have a TMO Magic with this:
Radio version: 2.22.19.26i.
SPL/hboot version: 1.33.0006.
product: sapphire.
mid: sapp30000.
security: on.
build-mode: ship.
After much incorrect flashing of radios and spls, I've had to restore the original SAPPIMG.nbh to get back to this point, but because I have a sim from my local cell carrier (Fido, up in Canada) without a data plan it won't recognize my sim. The only option I've been able to determine will work and get me back to have a custom recovery, eng spl, and cyanogen mod goodness is to use a goldcard, however I can't use the phone to format/read/write my extra sd which makes this difficult. I've been trying to fool around in linux using an sd card reader and the android sdk, following a guide called How to create a goldcard with Ubuntu Linux (I can't link yet, but that should get you to the right place) However its not clear exactly on how to find the CID from the sdcard using linux, and I've always been a windows person myself so my background knowledge of linux terminal commands is severely lacking. To summarize my question: With my phone in this state, what steps can I take to load a custom recovery? And if this is possible using a Linux box and a card reader, what terminal commands must I use?
Thanks alot for any help
Edit: My bad, I though I posted this in the general forum. I know you guys mods hate that so please move my thread to the general section, or delete it and inform me so I can repost.
If you mean the step no. 6 in this guide: http://www.nazriawang.com/2010/04/how-to-create-goldcard-with-ubuntu.html
then it's an ADB command , and you need to setup adb on your ubuntu first.
Follow this guide to know how to setup adb on Ubuntu:

I have adb set up in linux, but I have the default rom installed and can't get into it to turn on usb debugging. Thats why I'm trying to read the CID of the microsd using a card reader.
Do you have recovery installed ? Try to get your phone into recovery and do the adb command again.
If not then borrow another phone from a friend and use it to get the cid of the card

Hello,
Ive been on this site for some time now and have flashed countless roms from windows roms, sd android and now, of course, nand roms. I have always had windows on my home pc, but after the experience of going from windows to android, I started looking for something better for my home pc. I ended up wiping windows from my computer and installed Ubuntu, which is smooth, fast and I love it. However, one thing has me stumped. I cant figure out how to get the tools, ex. SYNC, installed on my computer. I am trying to use WINE to accomplish this... anyway, im not an expert, but if someone could just give me a little help, I would appreciate it!!!
I hope i opened this in the right place...
I dont think I need the SYNC program, but when I try to use the DFT flash program, ubuntu says it cant be opened... I dont want to use microsoft windows anymore... help me obi wan...
VirtualBox and install a Windows image. That should probably work.
Not sure about sync, but for flashing, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433
quote
- Take any "RUU_signed.nbh" from a ship ROM and copy it to SD card.
- Rename it to "leoimg.nbh"
- Reset the device while pressing the volume down button.
Although you probably know about this already
Is there any way to take a full backup of our phone like ghost in windows
so if wy try a new rom and we dont like it to put back the backup rom and everithing works fine again.
Not a program that will take backup only the app.
thank you.
There's two ways as far as I know:
You can use Clockworkmod Recovery, check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377390&highlight=clockworkmod+recovery
This is the best solution for testing ROMs, but will not be as good as the next:
Another way is to use a pc to backup everything: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374511
This method will protect you even better than Recovery, but requires a Linux-based computer and access to the pc when you want to go back to another ROM. It will also be a better protection against bricking your phone.
Basically, you want to flash ClockworkMod Recovery (follow the instructions in the thread), boot it up ("Usage" in the thread) and navigate to "backup and restore". Take a backup. To go back to a backup, do the same, but press "restore".
For the second solution proposed by the32bits you just need an usb stick and install Ubuntu (or any other linux) on it. Now you can boot Ubuntu from the usb stick and make your backups.
Just in case you have a windows pc
but i dont know how to use ubuntu is there a guide to tell me what to do when i run ubuntu ( something like copy paste from phone to ubuntu or there is a comand )
Take a look at this tutorial thread by Bonowax. You have to enter the commands mentioned there in terminal (command line).
