Some WiFi issues - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi Guys,
I have some issues on my android with the WiFi power management.
1. it doesn't go to sleep when I press the sleep button. I'm not quite sure if it should go but if there is no application using the WiFi there is no need to stay on.
2. when it I wake up the phone, sometimes it takes a long time before I can get a traffic to my router. Sometimes I even need to restart the WiFi in order to get it working.
Also when I send icmp packets to my gateway the time for the echo replay varies a lot. from 80 ms up to 250 ms. and this changes on every packet.
I'm new to Android and I'm not quite sure how to debug it. Where are the log files etc.
Thanks

WiFi useless in my opinion on the Xperia

1. It disconnects automatically too frequently
2. I have a secure network and I have to enter the 100 digit (seems like) password everytime
3. Sometimes wont' connect at all.
The signal strength is 100% too.
Anybody else have this issue???
Is there a program that can monitor and connect automatically (remembering password) to help me???
Many thanks.
Mine is OK. Only have to enter the password once for the first time. Mine only disconnect when I turn the WiFi off via Communication Manager.
Im with craven.... My WiFi works perfectly.
My WiFi works flawlessly.
There is SPB Wireless for monitoring only.It does not help you reconnect. Good program.
Did you try to adjust the slider on WiFi settings towards Best Performance instead of Best Battery (it's on Power Mode in WiFi settings, from Communications Manager) ?
Maybe you have installed some crappy sofware that takes over your wireless settings(it happend to me when i installed some software- i don't remember it's name right now).
nope mine's ok. doesn't turn unless you specify. Reception is not bad either.
no problem with my xperia...
No problem with Linksys WRT54GL at all. Maybe you should check your router's settings.
Only twice had I needed to re-enter my WPA passkey, but otherwise it's great. Able to enjoy the web whilst in bed and a lot faster than my old P990.
It happened to me twice.
Though no problem lately.
As a little trick, you can use a text file (or whatever code protection software) to store the key and do a copy/paste if you don't want to type the code all over again.
I had this problem at first... I didnt know why it would keep disconnecting...then i figured it out..the wifi disconnects when the phone is in standby. Schaps advanced configuration tool fixed it quick and now im enjoying it very much =)
many people have success upgrading the firmware of their routers to fix
such issues
wifi working grt in my x1
once i entered wep key
now its working grt
You shouldn't use WEP, you can crack WEP under a minute now and even if you use a while "mac" list it's not safe enough since you got the MAC addresses just listening the packets.
my x1 works perfect on wifi. not loosing connection, set up the wlan key at the first time and it was saved forever. have tried it on 5 wlans and everywhere without problems... is think wifi and the gps are the only things that are sophisticated 100% on the x1 ^^

It is good only if you have a usb connection or 110/220V nearby as always on wifi drains the battery in a half day
BTW: the wifi reconnect after suspend is really fast here, almost every time 1-2 sec.
mine is just fine, my home wifi uses a 11 digit password, just had to put in once and never again, doesn't disconnect randomly, only when disable the wifi obviously.
you should check with your warranty, see if they can do something about it, cause your case isn't normal.
have you all changed it to best performance in the settings?
im sitting right next to my router...and it loses connection now? this is quite annoying. i put the slider in the middle.. i sometimes leave wifi on when im asleep at home. so i like to keep it in the middle? whats the deal?
haha...about the Xperia wifi problem, just off your bluetooth b4 u try to use the wifi.
i think xperia is sharing wifi and bluetooth in the same device support.
i been test many time....when open bluetooth the wifi is weak and keep disconnect..
if this problem can't slove it then i think u better send to service center to fix it.
I actually found a problem in the Wifi/Wireless configuration.
I have 2 WPA protected routers with long keys/passwords. I found that if I enter the keys for both, the X1 would only remember ONE of them. I tried this by trying to save the password on either one of the WPA routers, and would only remember the FIRST one entered. So if you entered a 2nd one, it would always forget it, and you would need to manually re-enter the password again. Sure, it would connect, but then after it disconnects or you leave the area, then re-enter the area, it already forgot the password again.
i dont have bluetooth on and this is getting pretty annoying..
are you guys all using best performance?

[IDEA][APP] Push Mail Wifi

Hello,
I dont know if this has been brought up. But I dont have a data plan but I would like to have push mail which I know is not possible with Wifi. As far as I know, push mail sends a message to the phone and tells it to connect to server to DL message.
Is there any way to intercept that message and have Wifi turn on to download the message?
Thanks
If you turn on the wifi before launching the email doesn't it use it instead? this does not solve the problem as you mentioned but at least you get the email via wifi...
pushmail and wifi is just a bad idea. pushmail only works properly with an "always on" connection. wifi sucks way too much power and i doubt and device can stay on for more than 6 hours. also wifi it turned off as soon as the device goes into sleep mode to save power
that said, i game across cooked roms in the past that had pushmail enabled on wifi

Data Connection Always Connected

I am not sure if this is even a problem, but before today my data connection to t-mobile would only connect when needed. For instance, if I was home then I would be connected to wifi and my data connection would turn off by itself, but would still connect if needed by a program, or whatever, that can't use wifi but needed the data connection instead. Like when I sent a MMS message for example. Then after the message was sent or whenever the program was done with the data connection then it would automatically disconnect where I would continue to use the wifi connection. Also, if I left the house then I would automatically be switched to the data connection as the wifi signal went out of range.
This is the way I liked it. Today it had changed the way it behaves. Now, the data connection stays on no matter what and I have to manually turn it off in the comm manager. Also, everytime the screen turns off and the device goes into sleep mode, or whatever you call it, the data connection automatically turns backs on while it is sleeping. For example, when I go to sleep I press the red hang up button to put it in sleep mode then I go to sleep. When I wake up in the morning the data connection is on and when I go to turn it off it shows it has been connected for however long I was asleep for.
Like I said I am not sure if this is a big deal or not, I just don't want to be charged for going over the data cap for some reason. And I am not sure if maybe there is a program in the background that might not be showing up in the task manager and is downloading data that will eventually cost me when it goes over the cap.
Now I know that certain things automatically connect to download data like mail, weather, stocks, twitter, etc., but I always thought that they could use a wifi connection if available. And if not then I know for sure that it used to at least disconnect the data connection after it was done.
I am basically asking if this is normal because it used to not be like this on my phone and if it is something I need to.be worried about? Also, if anyone knows how to change it back to the way it used to be? I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know how to do it.
Thanks,
Michael
Anyone?
All I want to know is if it is normal to always have the data connection on. So does anyone else experience this? The data connection seems to reconnect by itself everytime the phone goes in standby and stays connected until I manually disconnect it.
Thanks,
Michael
Hey I just happen to have similar problem with the data connection turning on by itself when I check email on my wifi.
If you goto comm manager - menu - connections - advanced
Under "select which networks are automatically" - select networks
Change the connection type under "programs that automatically connect to the internet..." to your wifi connection from "t-mobile data."
Seems to work for me at the moment anyways. It's not connecting automatically to data connection when I check my emails.
Hi Michael.
It's actually the default behavior for the data connection to stay on once it's activated, until it's switched off manually. You won't pass significantly more data that way than if you just turned it off right after whatever app(s) are doing using it...the only downside to leaving it on is the speed at which it drains the battery.
There are some users who choose to leave it on, just to avoid the delay when they want to use it, and there's probably tons more who don't even have any idea you might want to turn it off when not in use.
Now I could swear there's a cab floating around here somewhere that will shut off the data connection once it sits idle for 60 seconds, but I didn't turn it up in a casual search the other day, so I can't point you to it right now
As for the apps using wifi when it's available instead of calling up a data connection, every one you mentioned should do that, and those all behave that way for me...so maybe there's something else you haven't thought of yet that ignores wifi when it connects to update or whatever. I would start by turning off auto updating for any and all of those services you listed, and see if the issue persists. If so, you'll need to dig deeper to find the culprit. Do you have microsoft myphone connecting to backup maybe? That seems to ignore wifi on my phone, I'm sure there's other apps that do as well.
Today it actually quit doing it for some reason. So I have no idea why it did that for awhile. Now I read that some people were having the opposite problem, which was that they couldn't get their connection to stay on. Now, this is actually the way I want it. Oh well, I hope it stays this way now.
Thanks for your help,
Michael

[Q] Email and data

Hello,
I am a new Focus user with ATT and have a couple of questions:
1. Is there a way I can set the size of the email download size ? I would like to limit individual email size to 20KB ( like I was able to in WinMo 6.5)
2. I have 2 email accounts (a) Exchange push email and (b) IMAP Account set to download every 15 mins.
When both 3G and WiFi is On, which connection is actually used? I have Wifi at home and at work. Today I was checking the Data Usage on ATT website and there was 6MB transfer during night (which shouldnt happen, since I am at home and the phone should be using the always-on WiFi, right?)
3. WRT WiFi - When I press the power button to bring the phone out of standby, the Wifi appears to be activating and connecting. Does this mean that when the phone is in StandBy the Wifi is not used for data transfers ?
Thanks in advance.

I am totally curious about this as well (per my other [Q] post). If WiFi actually turns itself off after X time when the screen is off and all the data is leveraging the 3G, I'm going to be very saddened.
That makes sense, I was wondering why I was using data in the middle of the night while I was on WiFi... hopefully Microsoft fixes that one with the update they are supposedly pushing out "soon."

[Q] Radio low power mode timeout

It's my understanding that the radio will go into low power mode when the screen is off, unless some program is doing something over the network in the background.
I assume that when something happens in the background, the radio will wait for a period of inactivity before it goes into low power mode. Does anyone know how long this is?
I set up openvpn, and it kills my battery when I leave it connected. The default keepalive messages are sent every 10 seconds, but are adjustable. I have a home automation/security device that needs to be able to send data back to my phone for alerts, which is why I'd like to keep the VPN up all the time. I'm trying to figure out if I can increase the keepalive time enough to give the radio time to sleep, but not enough to allow my NAT session through TMO's proxy/NAT devices to timeout, which will break the VPN and require a reconnect.
Too bad IPV6 isn't widely supported yet, since it provides encryption at Layer-3, and would negate the need for NAT.
I haven't looked into IPv6 from the T-Mo side of things (are there even any v6 apps on the phone? anybody tried to access a v6 site yet?) but you can get a free v6 tunnel endpoint for your home from places like SixXS.
I'm fully IPV6 enabled inside my home network (including Android), running dual stack. And I have a 6to4 tunnel with tunnelbroker.net.
Apparently Android does not support IPV6 natively on the 3g/4g interface yet. Once that happens, it will be possible to get on the IPV6 beta with TMO. Right now, you need a Symbian or Maemo phone.
