New Hero coming tomorrow. What should I do first??!? - Hero, G2 Touch General

Ok so my new Hero will be here tomorrow, what should I do first? I know I should probably get rid of that horrid stock ROM, but which do I get? Modaco, LoX 2.1 (Eclair) or what? What should I install? Should I erase and partition my SD card? What what what??? I'm so excited and I just can't hide it!!! What should I do first?

Use MoDaCo if you want to use your phone as a phone - 2.1 is still bleeding edge and isn't based on a final release build by HTC.
But first you will need to create a goldcard from your SD card - follow the instructions here and free it from ROM lock-in. Once you've got through that, re-format your SD card to have a FAT32 partition as the first and a EXT3 partition as the second (I'd suggest a larger SD card than the standard 2 GB card supplied with the phone - and a class 6 for read speed). I would also install the latest Amon RA recovery image on the phone rather than the one suggested - although that works as well. Then finally install the MoDaCo ROM as per the installation instructions.

Just an FYI, but if you've got a Hero with a 2.73 build, the stock ROM isn't horrid. It all depends on what you want to do with your phone - e.g. if you want to use Apps2SD, you will need to have a rooted ROM, but if you have no need for root the stock ROM is fine.
That being said, I'd advise all GSM Hero owners to install a Modaco build!

Dave

Any good SD cards you'd recommend that I could pick up from a local best buy?

I can't tell of any any specific SD cards that you could get in Best Buy, but since you are shopping at Best Buy I take it you are in the US? If so, you are probably buying either the Sprint Hero or Verizon Droid Eris. Be aware that these are different to GSM Hero's as they use CDMA, and you should *not* try to install a GSM ROM on a CDMA Hero.
Regards,
Dave

I actually ordered the Telus one which is GSM and I've confirmed that the other GSM ROMS should work fine. Thanks though Dave

Best Buy are the last place I'd buy SD cards from! They are generally unlabeled as to their specs which is my only gripe with the ones sold at Best Buy. I've got an A-Date Turbo 16 GB (class 6) card. It works fine and fast.

Well I just said Best Buy because I didn't want to have to wait by ordering online. I'd like to pick something up in a store so I can play with it over the weekend. Is this a class 6:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/SanDisk...Card/9016968.p?id=1218013808149&skuId=9016968
Or this one?

They both are. but the class only points at the minimum speed of a card.
For example there are some class 4 or 5 cards that are faster than a cheap class 6 card.
@pauliusba
I think he means the original rom shipped with the first hero's. It is kinda sluggish and lags a lot compared to htc latest rom. (also modaco 3.0 seems to be even faster)

except you need micro sd

Stock rom is anything but horrid

Yeah. To be precise, microSDHC. Sorry used to talking short hand. Class spec gives you a minimum transfer rate guarantee. Some lower spec'd microSDHC cards might give you faster transfer rates than a class 6, but you won't know until you buy and test - which is fine if you want to waste time doing so.
You'll want something with this form factor:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/SanDisk...12520281&skuId=9054337&st=microsdhc&cp=1&lp=4
Note this is class 2 at a cost of $99 - I got my A-Data Turbo 16 GB (class 6) for $67 CDN before tax. I'd go to any smaller computer place and see what deal they can do for you.

Hmmm... For some reason downloads from the market has stopped working... I haven't been able to download anything from the market in the last hour... The download just sits at 'Starting Download' but never starts... I heard that you have to hack/root your phone to download market apps if you're using a European or Telus Hero in the states but when i first got the phone I was downloading apps just fine so I figured that was false... any idea how to go about finding out what's wrong? I'm on WiFi...

Not sure why but sometimes Market downloads take ages to start... It's annoying, but patience seems to be the key at the moment... they'll get there eventually

Ok this is turning into a serious problem... I still can't get a download. Not last night, and not today and I've tried many many times... 20+
Something is obviously wrong. Any ideas?

This is so freaking ODD! Ok so I did a search and found a HUGE thread with hundreds of people having the same issue... one of the suggestions was to start the google talk app as this seems to remedy it but the guy said he had to do this each time he wanted to install an app... I tried it and sure enough AS SOON as I started google talk, I got a bazillion alerts in my notification bar saying all the previous apps I was trying to download were downloading and then completed... There has to be a way to fix this. I do not want to have to start google talk every time I want to download something...

The only time I've had the issue is when I've lost WiFi (either signal dropped out and then came back on or I had the idle WiFi kill issue). I've only had the issue after Y5 was installed, when the WiFi had dropped and come back on a few times. Curing the problem, I just switched WiFi off for a minute and then back on again.

no matter what roms you choose, and no matter what sd card you have to use, be ready to enjoy your phone, and enjoy the fun the hero brings to you

8 gb is a possiblity for universal? is nuclear right?

well im sure some of you have read post from this guy. about how he is able to read files from his eight gb sd card in is uni even tho it only says 2 gb on his device. has anyone else gotten one of these supposed magical cards and tried it out? i searched on ebay and it seems to be that only one guy has or sells this specific card . is nuclear advertising for this guy , is he a scammer or is this true and we dont know about it yet. please give input if you have gotten one of these cards and have tested it out.
Even all those 4GB SD-cards are already non-standard and not working in most of the devices. From 4GB upwards they have to be SDHC-cards (SD 2.0) which are not supported by the Universal's reader. Sure, it would be possible to manufacture 8GB SD-cards, but it's very unlikely that they work in a lot of devices since SD was never meant to have more than 2GB.
Cheers,
-mARKUS
well i just saw today that a treo that was supposedly not able to support sdhc is now able to because of a firmware update. check engadgetmobile.com if that can be done with a treo why not the universal. if its a software problem im sure there are people in here that are able to help
Sorry about my long post but i am trying to give as much information as i can in one post.
I am requesting ROM builders to start firmware upgrades to support these 4GB and 8GB cards. Windows Crossbow doesnt support 4GB or 8GB SD only cards, instead it reads them and reformats them changing the firmware of the card to 2GB!!!!... I havent tried SDHC yet. Here are pictures of my 4GB Extreme III SanDisk SD only card. I couldnt upload it here so i zipped them and uploaded them to rapidshare. Helmi's AKU 3.5 ROM doesnt read a card formatted using Crossbow... i dont know its just too many details. I cant think. But I just want to let you guys know that you are right so far on your research. Keep the good work up!
http://rapidshare.com/files/8938902/sandisk_tech_support.zip
I emailed sandisk tech support these images. It seems they havent replied yet. Keep a track on all my threads as i keep posting about these cards everywhere.
Trust me its just because i have a lot of money that i am able to get my hands on these things. And i just keep posting my observations. I would even get my hands on the 32GB card if I could bribe the CEO of SanDisk.
It got reformatted to 2GB.. I am unable to make it 4GB again.
My 8GB card as you can see in pictures on ebay is a samsung make. Its also SD only. 8GB SDHC cards are available to be bought. They are a bit slower then normal SD cards and are cheaper too.
32GB cards will be coming soon in SD or SDHC i believe. I read it in news. Like its totally upto you to believe me or not, my information is very helpful to me but i still encounter problems and it seems not even sandisk can help me
Anyways so its a farse that Universal's SD card readers dont support SDHC. And you can file a lawsuit on SanDisk or Samsung for that. They just want you to spend more money into buying a SDHC card reader.... Truly its the ROM.
ok now i know u r full of shyt. u keep popsting that u have this card and it works but i have yet to see ne photos. u just like the attention u get from lieing through ur teeth. thats pretty sad
i dont know about the 8bg but my 4gb is working no probs,
doesnt matter if its empty, only used 900mb, or any amount in between empty or full, screen grab using SPB explorer of my current card status:
oh and to stop arguments there is no reason why nuclear couldnt download the demo of spb explorer then do a screen grab of his mem card section of memory just like i have in previous post!
so erm, as they say "get your cards out for the lads"
this is the card i got, dont know all the bull**** about this format that format, its slower etc, but this is quicker at loading tomtom sat nav up etc than my other card 1gb puremedia sd card, like i said 4gb, no problems http://www.mobymemory.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SD_MOBYMEMORY_4096_001

It works very well for me.

I don't know that I come to the same conclusion after reading the thread in the link. It seems questionable at best since two of the posters specifically said it did not work for them.
SDHC compliant devices work with SDHC cards, SD devices do not.
You may be lucky to get one that you can read from, but an SD device will not write to it without screwing it up.
The Universal is SD not SDHC

Yo thats a SD card not a SDHC lol. in the email you said SDHD...now you say SDHC... lol
this is total bull, i have came to two conclusions after reading all these post.
1 -now it seems like the only person that sells this specific card that nuclear has is fastmemoryman and he is advertising for him. IF that is the case then i tell u guys not to deal with this scammer cause i bought from him before and was sent a 2 gb card disguised as a 4.
2- Nuclear does indead have a 8 gb card from samsung and is able to put his dvd in it but because sd 2.0 IS backward compatible as i have read it from several sites you are able to use only 4 gb of the 8. so he is putting his dvd in the card but only one movie,
those are the only two possible conclusion there is . so if its not number 1 then its number 2

Don't bring me into this, I only know what you keep telling me, and what you post here.
I have no way of verifying what you say, one minute things work, one minute they don't, one minute you are developing a crossbow rom, the next you have one from another device.
It might be the language barrier, but half the time it sounds like you tell different stories from one thread to the next.

EVO Deleting images off SD Card?

Ok, I know I heard / read some information regarding users having wallpapers dissapear after the OTA update, however I thought I wasn't a victim, perhaps I was.
However, I have lost 1,000+ images (mostly a large group of wallpapers I had downloaded and hardly looked through) off of my SD card. In addition to wallpapers random pictures are missing that I had taken with my phone.
Mostly curious if anyone had similar experiences? If so, did you deduce they were OTA related, or a specific app? I really don't want this to happen again, so I am looking for any information to help solve this
I am running stock EVO not rooted, for what that is worth.
Thanks in advance!

Is there a way to trace down what the devices does, like a log where it shows activities between the device and the SD Card.
Just curious if you're using the micro SD card that came with the EVO or a newly purchased one, if so please mention card.

Mine is full rooted, not updated so far, with a A-DATA 16 GB Class 6 microSDHC Flash Memory Card and yesterday i lost the whole 100MEDIA directory so.....it seems to be a Evo issue
Could it be an internal issue in the Device? I dont think this has to do with the ROM/Update the device is running.
We need to escalate this as a crucial issue.
I am running [ROM]EVO-NonSense(AOSP Elements), rooted using Toast Method 2, Amon RA, with Calkulin Radio+WiMAX updates.
We should stay on top of this, I'd rather not have WTF moments or develop compulsions to constantly back up all files in some paranoid fashion..
I am using the stock SD card that came with my EVO, thankfully I was able to user some forensic programs and recover most of my images. I did narrow down the time frame of the deletions, however I was unable to determine If I had added any new apps to cause this issue.

It's always a good idea to try SD first, so you don't hurt anything and keep your sanity. Verygreen has a size-agnostic installer that works well, and is very painless.
The tips on keeping your SD card class 4 is right on the money. Faster/newer cards tend to Force Close on us a lot.
Once you have it how you like it, and are comfortable - switch to EMMC install.
Honestly, I've had my NC for about four months now, running off SD and CM7, and have never gone back to the original B+N bootup. One of these days, I'll just shove it all into EMMC and be done.

The Class X refers to sustained large block read/write speeds, and not the random one. Assuming you're intending to follow verygreen's guide on installing CM7 to the sdcard only, you specifically want a high random read/write speed card to do so. Anecdotal evidence (and lots of it) have shown that Sandisk branded microSDHC's of Class 2/4 work the best.
In terms of size, 4GB is pretty tight but great for simply testing (and cheap too @ 10 bucks from Staples). I use a Class 4, 8GB Sandisk (was only 15 bucks at Radio Shack) which feels much roomier.
Good luck and enjoy!

I'd recommend the cm7 nightly builds. More features, more customizable, all around the best experience to be had out of a custom rom.
For SD Cards, stick with the Sandisk ones, highest class rating you can find and I'm generally a fan of bigger is better when it comes to storage. Even the 32GB ones aren't that expensive anymore.
Definitely have fun with the nook, it's next to impossible to truly kill it, so have fun trying out a whole bunch of stuff. If you break something, just start over!
Thanks so much you guys! You are making me "feel" a lot better about messing with it!
I felt the same way when I got my first iPhone jailbroken, and I never managed to kill any of my phones yet! hahahaha (knock on wood!)
I just found verygreen's post, and that certainly seems ok..
Now to just figure out this winimage thing..yet again, something that a "Real" computer guy should probably know, but something I have never had to deal with..
Thanks again, and I will post updates/failures for you to shake your heads at! hahahah

One button?

Alright, I'm wondering how well having a single button works when using the nook as full sized tablet.
my girlfriend has the stock software loaded.. And It works alright for a very casual, no need to get things done fast atmosphere.. (which anyone who buys it as an ereader rather than modders tablet is probably expecting.)
The problem I have is I am use to my phone which has the 4 standard android buttons. I am wondering if I got this, or the kindle fire how well having one or possibly no buttons is going to work.
Just seems like when using it for a full sized tablet, it may get frustrating if you need to do anything fast or your trying to be a bit more productive.
What are your personal experiences?

Just load it on an SD card (search the forums for verygreens guide). That way her stock stuff will remain intact and all you have to do is remove the card to boot to it.
Yeah, That was my general idea.
It is a very nice feature and I wish that manufacturers would encourage this type of flashing.
It would be awesome if I could just spend 50$ on a few sd cards and load a different rom to reach one to try em out.
hey, if you do go with cm7 you may want to check out joenathane's 2 awesome themes. im currently running with the transformerBread themes and loving it. its vary clean and clear

FYI, you will probably see it, but if you are going the SD card route, try to get a Sandisk card above all others. I was using an a-data card for a while and kept getting random problems. The class isn't as big of a deal, but supposedly the Sandisks have the best random access performance.

Get the Sandisk and keep fingers crossed that it's not a counterfeited.
I already have a kingston 8gb from a while ago.
I may try it just to see.
I don't need perfect performance on a trail run or anything.

[Q] Best Stable ROM for NC?

OK, so first off I wanted to say that I love how dedicated this forum is, and as a new(er) person to all this it has helped a lot. The biggest thing is, I bought a triple-boot 32gb class 4 SD card from a company and it has the cm7 kang build on it, and an ICS build on it. I'm always having problems with it freezing and having problems with it getting market errors, everything else is flawless, (happens on both roms except nook stock rom). Also I put movies on their using a nook color handbrake option and it hangs alot, so do many other applications. I have had support from the company I bought it from on ebay, but I just want something more stable, able to play n64 roms at 100% and able to pair a sixaxis controller. I have tried various overclocking options, none of them seeming to effect the fact that it will freeze with almost five minutes of decent usage. Any help would be great thanks xda nookers!
Also: ICS is preferred simply because I have it on my SGS II on t mobile and would like it on here as well. But whatever is most stable works for me!
Sounds like you have a slow SD card, which is sad because it's 32GB . A SanDisk class 4 is best for booting off of, better explained here. But other than the SD card, I like using CM 7.2 from my SD, though I'm also fairly new to the Nook Color.

How would I go about that and are their any workarounds? What sd card would you suggest so I can get the most of making this a full-fledged tablet with high speeds and overclocking etc. Sorry for the bump post, have been very busy thanks!

I would not necessarily blame the SD. Who knows what those scalpers put on that SD. They ripped off something. Go to racks' triple boot and redownload his image (which is free, by the way) and start over.

If you re-burn racks' image there is no need to format first. But it would not hurt anything to go ahead and do it.
