Get Titanium Backup, free version will do but Pro is much better as when you batch restore apps it will do it all silently instead of asking if you want to install each one. It will also backup/restore your app data.
If you constantly change roms its a must have app.
ty, when i go into titanium back up, it says sorry, i could not acquire root privledges,. this application will not work please verify that your rom is rooted and inclused busybox and try again, i dunno if my rom is rooted or what busybox is, whats this? and where do i keep titanium backup so when i change roms i can get the app and get all my apps back? ty so much.
there is a file data.img in the android file in your sd. copy it to a safe place. download the new americandroid.rar ,unrar it then copy the content of it to the android folder in your sd. clrcad.exe then haret.exe. the booting will take a long time. after the succesfull booting copy your old data.img to replace the new one in the sd.btw americandroid roms are rooted and your case is strange.
so i wont need the new data.img file when i replace it with my old one? or are all the data.img files the same? and whats rooted mean? ty so much for help, im catching on strong cause of you guys.

rooted means, you have privilege that you can accept and deny that you cant normally, do. like you are the admin etc.
if you go down the route of using your old data.img save your mem card to the pc format the card put the new build on let it boot up and sort its self out turn phone off, then just replace ur data.img from your build you saved onto the mem card and everything will be there,
Titanium back up can save all your settings as well though. personally i use the free version it works well just the downside is you have to go through the process of clicking install on every app again but it works.
So I looked at all the other "starting Fresh" threads, and they don't answer the question I have.
I have been using virtuous sense and unity roms for a while now, but lately it seems as though the phones can't handle the amount of ram they need.
So i tried enabling swap (it's done properly and working, apparently), and it seems like it's not really helping much if at all. perhaps even making things slower.
My question is... if I want to start from say.... just a basic Desire Z, with root, s-off, eng hboot... etc.
How would I go about removing everything and getting back to a fresh DZ without any stray files from various roms, scripts like swap, etc...?
Can I just back up the sd card, partition the sd card back to one single partition, and slide the sd card back in there and it will act as if i have just the last installed rom on the phone, and nothing else?
EDIT: I'm noticing 4EXT Recovery can do a superwipe on all partitions.. how would I then connect to the phone and copy a new zip file there so that I can flash it on the cleanly wiped phone?
I'm guessing ADB Shell?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Unrooting_and_Returning_to_Stock
Way back when, I followed that guide to get my phone back to complete stock before I started flashing again. As for the SD card, I took off the media files that I wanted and just formatted the card using the phone.
In between ROMs, SuperwipeG2+ is what I use to completely clear the phone, without killing root.
Thanks EfemaN.
I don't want to unroot. I want to retain the ability to do everything I do now... I just want it to be as if I'm doing this for the first time again.
So I'm just going to recap what I intend to do. Can you or someone else tell me if this is all that's required?
1) download rom of choice
2) back up SD card
3) format/repartition SD card
4) upload rom zip from step 1 to SD card
5) run SuperwipeG2+ to remove everything off the phone but retain eng. hboot, root, and s-off
6) select flash rom from zip in recovery, and use zip from step 4
7) enjoy?
please let me know if I have it right. I can't stand these reboots and random shutoffs now from my current rom- but I'm not sure if it's because of previous installs that I've not cleared properly... I just want to make sure its not my previous software having any conflicts. For peace of mind I want to start from a fresh phone with root/soff/hboot.
Step 2 should be backup apps with titanium, and step 3 should be nandroid backup just in case, step 7 should be restore backed up apps and data (but not system data), and step 8 PROFIT!
When you superwipe (if you don't use 4EXT Recovery) you'll want to use this version:
http://www.multiupload.com/U7JPZHUG1E
Otherwise your partitions will be converted to ext 3. I highly recommend the 4EXT Recovery though... it's brilliant.

Yeah, that superwipe version will convert him to EXT4 automatically plus efs and wipe all partitions. Definatly what he needs. Good work as always! Its nice to have a handfull of helpful people around this subforum. Its refreshing from what xda used to be. A bunch of bitter geeks who just flame every question. Heck, I was scared to ask anything for a year, lol!

Thanks sino8r. I know what you mean about posting on XDA... I spent a few months doing nothing but reading before I actually posted a question. But in the end I'm better off for it. I just want people to love their Visions as much as I do.

Find a stock 3.1 ROM ( so you can root) here, and flash it using power/volume.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
When I say there are no files I literally mean that there in nothing on the internal drive. lol
When I click "install zip from sdcard" it tells me there are no files found. nothing in the "/" (root dir) :'(
I'm assuming there needs to be at least a folder like "/mnt/external_sd" for the Recovery Mod to access the external sd card?!
The above link requires me to access the official acer recov, don't know how to do that seeing as CWM is there.
I don't understand why they would put options in the Clockwork Recovery that could format the internal drive completely...there's no "/mnt" or "/system" or anything...
Kinda sh**ting myself as my tab is now less than a doorstop
PS. it also says "can't mount /sdcard"
HAHA.....ok, jokes on me....I just noticed that the reason for the device not picking any files up from the "sdcard" was because the damn thing formatted my EXTERNAL CARD.
So, kids...what have we learned today, beside that I'm (in the great words of Red Foreman) a dumb-ass, it's that CWM read from your EXTERNAL sdcard and NOT, i repeat, NOT your internal.
Sorry, and thanks anyway
Ummm yeah, I assumed you had no files, even before you apparently knew it. That's why I provided the link for you to d/l the stock ROM of your choice via PC, copy the files to SD card and flash using stock recovery

This is pretty common knowledge...
Never had the problem before, so I forgot, you ever forget, well, I forgot.
Thanks anywho
We all do stuff like that from time to time as we are only human. I seen people not unmount the sd card and it make the card unreadable and you can't get the files off of it then. You have that grayed out sd card, when you try to use it.
good afternoon
I have an ACER Iconia Tab to 500 HC 3.2 and using the second method of this post (Revert OTA 3.2 back to 3.0.1) and gets the android logo and a yellow triangle, someone might say it is?
Or if someone knows how to connect this tablet in Windows XP
thanks
Did you remember to extract the zip file that was in that post? The file that is to be extracted is update_not_stable.zip. Once you extract that, there should be a file that is called "update.zip". Make sure that is the file that is on your external SD card.
yes, I put the update.zip on the microsd and also have put the update.zip for content if that, but it works.
thanks
So does that mean you got it to work? I'm not sure if I fully understand your last post.
my English is disastrous to use a translator to express myself. Did not mean that workers but does not perform the recovery
Could you possibly outline the steps your performed so far, and perhaps I or someone more knowledgeable than I can offer better assistance.
I followed the steps are:
1 - I downloaded the file.
2 - I've extracted and copied to the microsd (update.zip) formatted to fat32
3 - I turned on the Iconium and has begun "erasing cache beforing SD update... booting recovery kernel image"
4 - android robot appears with a band and then carrying out erde a triangle with an exclamation in the middle of the icon.
Hmmmmm, I can't see anything that jumps out at me as being some wrong.
The update.zip is still zipped right? You right clicked on "downgrade_not_stable", extracted that, removed update.zip and out that file (which will be unzipped) into the root of your external SD card.
There is also the off chance that the file you downloaded got corrupted for whatever reason. If it won't work perhaps you can try to download it again and follow the steps.
hello,
i have the same problem. I did the same : unzipped, put on the external sdcard the file and I have the logo of the bot with the yellow triangle..
I downloaded again and again, restart from the beginning and I can't downgrade.
someone has an idea why it doesn't work ?
Thanks
same issue with mine... not too sure why i'm getting the error as I've been able to do things with the SD card before, so I don't think its an SD card problem.
Not SD problem
I already tried with differentes SD cards. They all work, but unable to start the downgrading !!
Maybe the file is not compatible with my tablet. How can we check ?

What tab to you have? The A500?
Make sure that it is the file "update.zip" that is on your sd card. Make sure this update.zip is still a zipped file.
Other than that, I don't know what could be wrong. I did the downgrade with no issues.
Thanks for the answer.
My tablet is an iconia A500.
I unzipped the file downloaded, that gave an update.zip. I put it on the SD card. The tablet recognized the file but stop just after find it.
I have no idea whatelse to do.
TRy and try again.
Finally it worked !!!
It was a download problem in fact for me.
I hope it can help.
maybe i'll try downloading on another computer (this one has XP?) and see if that makes a lick of difference. this is getting frustrating.
Still no go. Even did everything just on the iconia and still get the yield sign when trying to recover during boot.
Hi , I did it right now and it worked , installed iconiaroot and CWM and all went fine, but I have another problem now :
external miniSD can't be seen anymore and I'm not able to install any custom rom . If I go to recovery and pushing "install zip from" : it always goes to E: directory sdcard (and it 's not found)
Is there anyone that can help me ?
Thanks

Hello,
I had this problem with the update of tabonay. The problem was a ";" at this end of the file :update.zip
Retry and check you have a .zip at the root of the external SD card
Hi
The problem is that I can't see neither micro sd external card nor USB pen anymore on my system
Please help
Thanks
Great that It worked for you, It doesn't work for me, do you think this will work with a USB since I can't get it to work with an SD
I apologize as I tried to search but I suppose I'm not good at that either.
I am trying to point a podcast program to download to my external sd (microsd) card. I cannot figure out how to find the correct patch to tell the program. The stock file explorer says one thing and I downloaded Astro and it tells me another.
I can copy files to the card (I have the camera saving pics there).
What am I doing wrong that I can't figure the path to a created folder on my micro sd card?
Thanks for any help.
mnt/sdcard/extStorages/SdCard/
Thanks. Something is wrong then. I have tried with BeyondPod and Pocketcast to point them to download to the external sd card with no luck.
Anyone have any luck doing this or suggestions?
I agree.
There is something wrong with the way SD card is handled.
Titanium backup for instance only shows 440Mb capacity, Root explorer shows 1Gb and system settings sees it as 32Gb.
Weird!
Surely someone has tried to do what I am trying. Anyone?
Okay, I did a LOT of reading here and I THINK I know what is going on. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Apparently, apps cannot write to the external card including aftermarket file explorers. There might be a fix here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454178 but it requires root. I have never rooted anything so I am a bit scared to try.
I hope this may help someone else having a similar issue.

Edit the permission will solve write problem.
Root is easy, just flash the zip file, all done.
Are there any drawbacks to rooting this device?

Yes, you won't be able to play DRM protected films (incl. those from the market) and probably Google Music's MP3 store won't work anymore, too. I'm sure there will be more of the like.
I rooted mine, corrected the SD card's permissions, I'm able to set the font size (which breaks TouchWiz, you'll need to have another launcher installed beforehand) and the more.
But: it's not easily revertable, you would have to flash the original firmware as far as I've read.
