Sorry to say that but HTC Comm Manager is really worthless !
In my previous phone (Glofiish) the Comm Manager was the master of all communications : if I disabled data communication - no app could bypass it and connect to data !
The HTC one is just a dummy !
You turn off data ... and every single app that wants to connect still can do it ! And the same goes for bluetooth too ...
Maybe even Flight Mode isn't a safe lock ?
I need a real Comm Manager that is a "firewall" and doesn't allow apps to bypass it ! If I set switches to disable data or bluetooth or anything else I don't want that apps could bypass it ! Switches in Comm Manager should be like hardware buttons ... if you turn them off no app should be able to bypass them.
Is it possible to tweak or replace the HTC Comm Manager with a "real" one ?
Thank you
Flight mode does just that, disables all radios, unless you turn the radio back on, no data connections can be made.
The On and Off buttons don't "firewall" the connection, it simply disconnects it. Why should it firewall it?? Then off the radio then if you don't want apps accessing it..

Why ? because of roaming and the so called "unlimited plans" where you can have a 150000 € surprise bill at the end of the month Also, because some ports / protocols are "unlimited" and other not ... so I prefer do forbid any data access except when I specifically request it !
I can't just off the whole radio ... because I still want voice calls.
From my point of view a Comm Manager must be in control and able to restrict access to communication hardware ... not the apps ! The comm manager, or volume manager, or generally any other manager must be an unique access point for the user to set his preferences : if I switch off data it means that I don't want any app to data connect, if I mute volume it means that I don't want any app to disturb...
Afaik it was never the case. I've always used NoData to disable connections while travelling. BsB Tweaks does that too.
Yeah, MoDaCo NoData should be what you might want. Search for it.
Yeah, NoData works great, Thank you
Just a pity it isn't integrated directly in Comm Manager

my friend has a 9800 as well...
an he seems to be having a issue with his wifi...
i guess when he turns on tha little switch on the side... no icon appears
an therefor no internet access...
his phone is out tha box and other than tha task manager prog tha htc home plugin and streaming media program that i gave him hes done nothing to it...
any ideas???
I assume you mean 6800, not 9800... but anyway...
The wifi (as far as I or other people on this forum know) is a hard-switch. That means that it isn't really controllable by software, but rather when the switch is on, the wifi radio is on, and vice-versa.
If the operating system doesn't recognize that the wifi is on, it sounds like the switch might be broken. However, rather than relying on the icon to come up, try going to settings -> connections -> wifi and checking whether it can detect anything there.
Good luck!
the wifi is software controllable when the switch is on, so make sure he doesnt have any software that disables the wifi (i have SPB phonesuite on mine, and if i turn off wifi in phonesuite it doesnt come on when i flip the switch)
respect for the responses ill pass that info on to him...

Hi everyone!
I've had PDA phones since a couple of years now, and I've always been searching for something.
Here is my problem:
When the phone needs an internet connection, windows mobile automaticaly tries to connect with the 3G connection.. As I don't have an unlimmited 3G connection, it's very annoying..! That's why I have to manually turn the Wifi "ON"
What I am searching for
I'd like a very intuitive and simple software that ask (with a popup for example) which connection to use (Wifi/3G) when the phone needs the internet.
Hope you understood what i'm searching for..!
While not a solution NoData might help part of your problem in the interim.
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility/
It will at least let you disable 3G/GPRS when you need to so you don't go over.
Thanks for the answer, i know this solution.. But that's not really what i'm searching for..!
Maybe You can create a fake connection for 3G so the phone doesn't get to connect? Just an idea, haven't tried. It still leaves the WiFi problem - why there isn't an option to select which connection to use if one is needed...
depending on what rom you have im sure comm manager has buttons for wife and data connection, with basic on off control for each.
However Id have thought someone could write something which would switch between data connection enable and wifi disabled (when out and about) and the other way around when you have wifi available and dont want to use up your 3g allowance.
I don't think it's that easy
that Comm part is build into WM, so the developer would need to write a new shell that acts as internet and gives you the option of selecting the connection..
I do like the idea though
hmmm,
is perhaps feasible with Mortscript?
In which one intercepts the “Internet” call and then by Popup the choice would have?
Anyway?
if better , perm disable of GPRS will be good .
Try NoData to disble GPRS. Personally I'm not having much luck with it as my TD2 keep closing it down in background.
Alternative is to deliberately set an incorrect APN so it cannot connect even when it tries.
I don't know of any method of setting a default connection type.
NoData.cab works fine in my device, but HD Tweak can do the same job, so I removed it.
Would like to do the same too, and then have my weather and emails be updated via my home network thru wireless only...
any one able to do this?
Of course you can! Using 3g or any other paying data connection when WiFi is available is simply foolish

Done spose you would like to tell me how please...i am not that clued in with the HTC device just yet...and have used alot of my data already...which i have to pay for...
Thanks..
With pleasure:
Some people say they can deactivate gprs,3g etc within windows..but as I emptied my sim credit within a minute when I first started my Topaz, I decided not to worry anymore by installing Modaco's NoData.cab (it's free, google for it) and disabling all costly data connections from my operator. After a few days I realized that nodata.cab was no longer needed because I had also HD Tweak, who can do the same.If you use it go to point 6. and disable the 3 last settings. So it's up to you:NoData.cab or Hd Tweak...and I'm sure even others utilities work aswell.
Or you simply delete the settings for 3g conections and the software will decide to use WIFI it's avaible instead 3G (because it will not work without settings.)
How do you do that? In this case you would have to do the network autoconfig again if you need 3g etc..anyway this discussion is funny because it is rare to find a thread with multiple solutions recently....I was getting bored of unsolved problems . Cheers !

i try it right know to be sure.
I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic.
If 3G it's active and you enable WIFI the application it will use 3G.
If the 3G it's close and open WIFI the application it will use WIFI and don't open 3G.

So it's not about "deleting" anything, you're just using another application (costs USD$19.95). May be a solution
You understand me wrong.
First solution about deleting the connection was the simplest one if you want to use only WIFI.
Second : "I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic."
I use this app ONLY to verify and to be sure were the app goes to made traffic not for directing the app.
SPB Monitor tell you if you have one or more connections how much traffic you made...
and I see what I tell you if I have 3G closed and WIFI activated the traffic was made on WIFI and 3G remain closed.
But if you have 3G connected and start after that WIFI the 3G will made the traffic.
OK I understand, may I ask you again what are the steps for your first solution?
1. if you don't want to warry about 3G connection and you don't want to use it.
-"Connection setup/menu" disable auto configuration
-"Connections/manage existing connections" and delete all the connections
- enable WIFI and all the programs will use WIFI(will be the single way)
2. If you want to use 3G and WIFI
-when you use WIFI be sure/verify the 3G connection it's closed(click on the status bar-signal strenght icon and if it's active disable it)
-afterthat enable WIFI
Otherwise if 3G it's active will be the first option for applications to acces the internet.
Try to enable Autodisconect (ADV CONFIG or HDtweak) of data connection after you use it to disconnect automatically for you.
I hope I help you.
Solution 1 doesn't work here, wasted a couple of euros ..back to my good ooold system.
i still can't disable it, i just bomb $400 for activating gprs ..
new to WM phone , so ... kinda slow .
If you only want to use wireless all the time, try the following:
Go to Start | Settings | Connections
Click on Connections icon
Click on Advanced tab
Click on Select Networks button
Programs that automatically connect to Internet should use
My Work Network
Programs that automatically connect to a private network should use
My Work Network
Cheers to SEX1 on whirlpool...

Hi, will this solution also fix my issue? My issue being:
-No dataplan, but do not want do disable/delete 3g/gsm, because I still want to use it sporadically on the road, and recieve MMS. But only when I choose to manually.
-At the same time, I want the automatic updates of weather, push-email, stock and such, but ONLY when I'm in a known WLAN.
In simple terms, I want to deny the 3g/E/H from automatically connecting, without deleting them. At the same time, wifi should be allowed to automatically connect, and update selected services.
Is this possible?
Aloha !
I have a problem and I need your help (and yes, I have searched already):
My Blackstone activates data connections automatically, if a programm tries to reach the internet.
So far not a problem, as I have a flatrate for that.
The problem is, that it consumes much energy, if the data conection is etsablished and you drive in you car.
So my question is:
Is there any way to connect just manual to the internet ?
I tried deactivating the data connections by HD Tweak.
Afterwards it is still possible to connect to the internet and I even get an ip adress, but no programm on the phone is able to use that connection.
Does anyone have a clue, how to fix this ? It would be just perfect !
Tools like NoData and gb soft gprs umts tweak dont work, as they either dont block automatic connection or disable data connections completly.
Help would be appriciated, as this problem really annoys me.
Tavos
settings->connections->connections->advanced->select network
and select my home network or whatever it's called on your device
then no can create a connection using anything but wifi or over activesync
and when you want to let it use gprs
you do the same by select my isp or <insert your isp name> or whatever it's called on your device
Thanks for the answer, but thats not what I am looking for.
I want to be able to switch the data connection on/off by one click (with the CommManager for example), but not the programs to be able to do it.
The way you offered, it is completely off or it can be connected by programs.

I agree, this could be useful indeed.
I don't see the point of having a switch in the comm manager, if then any program can turn it on.

Toggle Settings from the market seems to do most of this, although not sure about turning off the data connection. You can set it to 2G though.
I think Locale would do some too - it can be set to behave in a certain way when at a certain location - I've NEVER used it though, just read about other users using it for this kind of function so check it out
hi,
thanks for your quick responses.
yes local will do some of it, but i mainly needed to change profile as an when i needed, i.e. not based on geographical location.
if you come across any other application please let me know. i am sure this sort of application will be really useful for lot of other people.

You can also try "Ear" it does almost everything except the data connection part
the 5 widgets you can get (hold finger on empty space -> htc widget -> settings) will do this... sure, you don't get the benefit of pre-sets (there _will_ be an app that will do this, somewhere) but it's totally flexible
you can certainly do the "wifi on / bluetooth & data off" and vice versa for leaving the house via locale... might be able to get by with manual toggles after that (or also have a location for work)
location works great!
try it!
