Any chance of TouchWiz UI making it into one of our ROMs? - G1 General

I was looking at the Samsung Behold II and noticed the TouchWiz UI.
Any chance someone has heard of this and whether or not it will make it into one of our builds?
So far I only see one possible phone on the horizon that I would "possibly" trade up to from the G1, but it looks like the OS is going to stay android and that would be the "Dragon" if it ever makes it to Tmobile.

In all honesty, you're better off staying put with the G1 for now. The Behold is pretty ugly in my opinion, and after playing with it I found the TouchWiz UI to be gimmicky. After awhile, I found it annoying and shut it off and just used the regular android set-up

ya the dragon is the better .i would wait for it ,t ,mobile will be getting it soon !

Just say no to Touch Wiz
Go read a review for the Behold II and then see if you still want to use the Touch Wix UI. I say stay away from Samsung until they can hire some good software designers and not make something that works against the operating system.
Here's a good one.

Should I buy this phone?

Was wondering what's the track record of Samsung getting custom Roms/firmware?
I really like how XDA have developers to do custom ROMS for HTC phones but was wondering does Samsung phones gets same treatment? Or will be looking at far and few in between updates from Samsung itself and won't be able to update to the latest and greatest?
Really want Nexus One but the Galaxy S is sooooooooo much better *sigh*
Can't answer your question on whether the Samsung will get the same amount of Dev time that has been lavished on the HTC phones, but I was in the same situation as yourself - Galaxy S or Nexus One.
I came down on the side of the Galaxy S simply because it's a better phone all round. There's a multi-touch vid on youtube comparing the responsiveness of the screens, and the Galaxy wiped the floor with the Nexus One. I'm hoping that the popularity of this phone will mean that the Devs on here will start giving some time to the Galaxy S.
I must admit I was initially drawn towards the Nexus One because of excellent work that has been done by the likes of Cyanogen et al, but I took the long term view that surely the same must eventually happen with the Galaxy S. *crosses fingers*
For the Galaxy, there is MoDaCo. For the Galaxy Spica, there is Samdroid. Don't know much about the others, but they weren't released here in Europe anyway.
I followed Samdroid a while, thinking about getting a Spica. There are some awesome things going on there - they even tried to modify the touchscreen sensor, because the hardware does support multitouch, but the driver doesn't. AFAIK, they had no success, but still nice try. And they even opened a board for the Galaxy S, maybe Leshak fetches one and works some magic there in the future. If not, I am pretty sure somebody will.
If you want to customize it to run the latest roms, the question is: how "open" is this device?
I know that HTC made the Desire a pain in the butt to unlock/root, and they will improve this with every new phone the make, making them more and more secure and block customized images.
Is Samsung going to follow the same strategy?
I think you're right Magicdroid, the question would be how open this is. But even though the Desire was a pain to root, it HAD been rooted just cos there's lots of developers. When there are lots of developers, you'll get rooted device
I wonder if the Galaxy S will get lots of user base.............I just hope lots and lots of ppl will pick it up and then the chance of longetivity with custom ROMS dramatically increases....
I'm hopoing for good community support as well. I have an AT&T Tilt, and have doen well on the XDA site. I'm spoiled
I am very interested in the Galaxy S, but I"m on At&T, and the AT&T version i keep reading about doesn't have the same specs. So having to wait and see on that.
Also, I see a lot of negative feedback on Samsung support, and based on their previous Android phone (Behold I think it's called) is not getting an upgrade. Lots of complaints about being abandonded by Samsung.
Not sure what I'll do. If At&T doesn't get decent phones soon, I mahy have to look do Verizon.
Sorry...I'm rambling off topic.
The Galaxy S looks like a great piece of hardware.

Hilarious! I just found it and laughed so much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVlsRCMltDg
I was considering to buy a Nexus, but now I changed my mind...someday this mobile will hopefully get root and give enough space for customizations of every kind...just wait and see - it will come in the mid of June to Europe and I'm eager to hold one in my hands
I'm disciplining myself to not get this phone until there's a good team of developers move to it to get customizations going
aaahhh the wait the wait......
and, do you have one jet? the best mod is doctorz rom. it runs very smooth

Port HTC Sense for SGS

I am a huge fan of HTC Sense. I'm considering getting a galaxy s when its out. I don't like the Samsung UI though.. do you guys think that it is possible to get the sense experience ported to galaxy s? are devs gonna port sense to galaxy s when its out?
If you can get a sense UI for 2.1, then u can have it for galaxy S too!
The only problem will be that the Galaxy S first have to be rooted and unlocked, but because it's the best android phone available in a few days, I think there will be developers for this phone to root and make custom ROM's for this phone.
I too am a huge fan of Sense but TouchWiz 3 has a fun and practical appeal.
I'm happy to try this out first before looking at an alternative front end.
I've been playing with Sense from time to time, but I typically get rid of it after a few days, I think the Samsung Daily Briefing is gonna be more to my liking
For me...sense is the best UI of the lot. I love the widgets and the general sleekness of it all. I really like the hardware of the galaxy s, but I'll only buy it if we can root it and run sense on it. That's my only stipulation...but man, that is a sick phone! (except that it looks like an iphone)
If the galaxyS gets rooted.. will it be possible to install 2.2/3 android to it even if samsung doesnt do that?

The cookers have done okay on a lot of other Samsung phones, (see modaco, etc), so we can remain hopeful!
i say this coming from an Omnia that got winmo 6.5 long before any official release.
Samsung understand the value of letting their products get hacked by the community. I cant see it being a real hurdle to crack the phone.
As for Sense, I dont know, but I've lost interest in it. Having seen the close-ups of Samsung Touch-Wiz upgrades, I'm pretty pleased with what they've done. The only thing I might miss from HTC is their keyboard, where the touch and hold brings up all the alt characters on a particular key. I find the default android keyboard a bit frustrating by comparison.
ok so the only problem that i had was that everyone said that Samsung support is crap. so if it gets rooted and i can install all latest versions of android on it then this phone has perfect hardware and software problem gets solved!
i guess i will wait a bit after it gets released to see if it gets rooted and have a release for 2.2.

Yes I do love the HTC keyboard, I am trying out swype now to get ready for i9000 and it's great as well, and brings up many letters if we hold, but if we hold for a second it brings up only one, if we keep holding it brings up the rest in a menu, pretty cool. I'm sure on sammy it's even better.
However I think I saw in a video the HTC Keyboard or a similar one on the i9000. I think it will be easy to install.
Ok, all sounds encouraging then, just really impatient to get mine.

OK, i don't use many non-standard letters, so my opinion in this matter may be irrelevant, but i LOVE swype. I heard about it long before release, and have been keeping up with the development team for about a year and a half. I got a hold of it as soon as I could, and I find it amazing.
If you think about it, a touchscreen is really not designed to be poked at: I mean, buttons are meant to be pressed, a touchscreen has no reason to be prodded at apart from what we have been trained to do through years of mobile phones. Swype feels so natural, and I am really glad to see that Samsung have picked up on this. Also the slide to call/message feature of touchwiz 3 shows that they realize that we need to get away from the idea of poking a screen without buttons.

This was based on Windows Mobile which is easy to hack. Android is another thing and unless you can get hold of the drivers it makes it difficult to cook and this is where Samsung have locked down Touchwiz very well.
They hacked the Omnia HD which wasn't that easy - had it myself. One rom cooker that made good roms, but Symbian was a too tight OS for me, so I went back ti WinMo with my HD2. But I really do want Android. If people hack it once, then it shouldn't be any problems portin UIs and such I guess?
And by the way, they wrote at GSM Arena that it will get updated to Froyo, and when that happens, you don't have to rely on Samsung support for upcoming Android releases

Im done with android ...!!!!

Ok so im not posting this to be flammed or anything but more just to vent and for some opinions. But im really starting to get irritated with android and it's inability to come out with update in a timely manner, and i understand that alot has to do with the carrier to having to test it . But when you have all these android phones being made by 10 different manufacturers with really no limitations so they can all make there own flavor of android with different ui skins and, screen res, processors, file systems... etc. It is ridiculous cause there can't just be one kind of froyo nope , now there is froyo with sense , and touchwiz froyo, and for all the other different kinds of custom manufacturers skins that are thrown in. Which in my opinion makes it really difficult to be able to keep up with updates in a timely manner, and then on top of that samsung releases the fascinate that is supposed to get upgraded to froyo but instead of trying to get that pushed out they get the galaxy tab out with froyo hmmmm why not the fascinate no one knows and now the nexus s gets pushed out with gingerbread but what was that once again no froyo out for the fascinate i hope i am making sense with all this. Anyways as soon as Vzw get a WP7 phone that i like or the iphone 4 im leaving android, mainly for a smoother os and one that isn't so open that updates never happen. I would like some opinions on if im just impatient or if my whole venting session does make some sense to anyone, and if anyone agrees and is thinking the same as i am.

Oh believe and that is why i do like android but maybe its just i get bored with a device to easily, this is my 4th android device this year lol. Android just isn't cutting it for me anymore.
I love Android and the Fascinate in general and I think this whole 2.2 froyo update thing has blown absurdly out of overrated proportion! Yes 2.2 will be cool but alot of people are thinking it's going to be the awesome of all awesomes but it isn't? Aside from flash and app2sd there isn't a whole lot to speak about (thats going to be directly noticeable anyhow IMO)? Now, the Samsung Slow to no update record is another thing but we will have to see how that aspect plays out!

Do you really think that new iPhone or Windows device you get will update to a new OS within a few months of its release? The only difference is that you start with lower expectations for Windows or the iPhone.
I Think your Just Fed up With waiting for an update that Probably wont be out for a bit longer. 87jason I came from an iphobe 4 to verizon because of the superior service. I ended up getting the fascinate. I can say also there is nothing that android can do that Iphone doesn't do better. A jailbroken iphone ofcourse.
Themes, widgets, apps iphone wins hands down. There is no denying it. Oh and yes I said widgets.
One phone, once a year... no headaches or worries is something better out. The phone came out in June and still no phone is better hardware wise. Except the gpu is galaxy s is a bit better. But what's the point when there are ZERO APPS.

I think its more that the fascinate didn't sell well for verizon so them nor samsung are that worried about it. Sux but coming from a flagship like the droid was it had updates all the time but it use to be the big dog.

What will be the G2/Desire Z successor?

Let me first say that we all know that the Desire Z is an amazing phone and still is. It's got a great camera, speed, screen, features, keyboard, sound, unlocked bootloader, etc. However at the current moment there isn't really a great successor to it in my opinion. And by successor I don't mean a true successor of course. Let's take a look at some QWERTY phones on the market:
MyTouch 4G Slide
http://www.gsmarena.com/t_mobile_mytouch_4g_slide-4018.php
It's basically a G2 with slightly better specs and a better camera. Not much of an upgrade.
Droid 3
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_droid_3-4036.php
Last time I heard it had a locked bootloader so it has very limited software support. Definitely not friendly in that department. Specs are better than the 4G Slide.
Captivate Glide
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i927_captivate_glide-4071.php
I had high hopes for this one. It has a lot of improvements such as a AMOLED screen, slightly bigger screen, and similar specs to the Galaxy S2. However, it is somewhat of a downgraded Galaxy S2 considering that it came out just recently as it lacks LTE support and it does not have a higher resolution than the G2. However Samsung is friendly to the open source community. Oh also no LED notification (Ahh!).
So if I had to pick now it would be the Captivate Glide but I am not going to. I am hoping that HTC will make the G3 and put all their top tier specs onto the QWERTY phone like they did with the G2, including a bigger and higher resolution screen, LTE support, quad core CPU, etc.
Long live the G2/Desire Z!
Oh and yes the Droid 4 is coming out. From the looks of it, it will be a Droid RAZR but in QWERTY.
Droid 4 sure looks interesting but will it make it to Europe ah probably will, under the name Milestone. I like the way the 4 basic android buttons are still present, hope ICS wont kill them in the future phones.
Not going to change my phone for a while tough DZ works great, had it for about a year now. And i suppose it depends also if these phones will get MIUI rom . But i'm interested to see HTC make G3, not just yet tough, next summer maybe. within a year i hope.
i was caught by this statement "However Samsung is friendly to the open source community. Oh also no LED notification (Ahh!)."
is HTC not dev friendly? me? yeah. sucks. they left Desire series. that includes our Z.
anyway going back to the topic. i prefer the Glide.
No offense but the g2's camera sucks. Video recording is like 20fps in areas slightly less than ideal lighting conditions and stills require a steady hand and ideal lighting.
The Captivate Glide sounded interesting at first. But the more I read, the more I'm disappointed.
http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/20/review-samsung-captivate-glide-att/
http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/samsung-captivate-glide-at/4505-6452_7-35033579.html?tag=mncol;rvwBody#reviewPage1
Sounds like crappy exterior build quality, and bad keyboard. And as the OP mentioned, no LTE. Really not much of an upgrade from the G2/DZ, IMO.
And the 1 GHz CPU on the Captivate Glide seems obsolete out of the box, as the high end smartphones are going to 1.2 GHz and higher nowadays.
Like everyone here mention Droid 4 is awesome I dont like sammy software as i myself had epic 4g it was buggy on input that physical keyboard wasnt even optimize for the software like on full touch screen galaxy line. As im more in love with stock aka pure google or vanilla phones. I would wait for htc to release the G3 before deciding to get another plus all the apps i want i can get. Their no point upgrading if android market is supporting our phones. I love droid when it was the first one because of vanilla experience unless moto change their way i wont get the droid 4. Droid 3 is awesome but i dislike both Motoblur and Sense ui referring to htc phone on that. I rather have touchwiz before both. But it your pick on what phone your getting.
i wouldn't go as far as to say the DZ has a great screen. it actually kinda sucks. so I think the next best thing will be ANY phone with a keyboard, better screen, better camera, will probably be HTC (or moto now that google is running things there) and at the very least just as fast (but faster probably and probably dual core). so..... the MT4GS? lol

Yeah DZ rocks as long. Before i buy anything i probably wait for it to get MIUI. I don't like sense, not sure about motoblur/touchwiz, never used them. So i might even enjoy them.
Anyway i get the hardware i like and root it to get the firmware the way i like. I'd like to see G3 popping up in 9 months.
I honestly dont think the Htc g3 will appears for a while until t-mobile feel like making g2 users jump the wagon. Because mytouch slide 4g was the same screen size i didnt like that it had sense ui to be honest/.
Specs the mytouch 4g slide is better but i dont like sense ui, to me that not better in my opinion,if im going to root a phone i dont want to root it for Stock ui .
i want to have stock already just overclock it and use root explorer to delete the apps i dont like.

Google g1 was best phone that run all version of all time.

Best advice is to go into a phone shop and have a play around with the demo devices and see what you like. There are loads of phones especially from HTC who seem to be releasing a new phone every week.
Galaxy Note or Nexus. Xperia ones are nice. But I dont trust Sony Ericsson..
Galaxy Nexus! After all its pure Google phone
If you want something different you should consider the Nokia N9. I've only tried it briefly in shop, but my god it's gorgeous.

You don't need a phone, then! You need something different! Any other phone is going to be just too simmilar to your SGS2 (which I think you should seriously reconsider fixing). Try an Open Pandora (Google it! I can't post links!), it's the closest coolest thing I can think of!
Just go buy an iPhone. You're asking if there's a better alternative to one of the best Android phones around? pfffft....our phone is a software upgrade away from being a better phone than a galaxy nexus (apart from that massive screen ofc...).
I personally think after windows 8 is released and the windows 8 tablets start flooding the market with metro ui windows phone is going to get a lot more popular too as a result. I'm waiting to see what happens but I might make the switch.
Right now i would not recommend anything for android. If you want a whole new experience, try WP7 or meego.

+1 to this.
In fact I am eying for WP 7 or furthers as my future OS. I like Microsoft and their work. If everything goes well WP will be the mostly used and popular OS within next 3-4 years.
For me it would be the Galaxy Note, it does everything the G-Nexus does, but better. All it needs is ICS. Personally I think the 5" screen is great, especially for films which I already use my GS2 for a lot.

I agree that Mango is the best mobile OS right now, but I'm not planning to replace my SGS2 any time soon. The fact is that the android ecosystem is just a lot stronger right now, everything from ROM development to app choices. ICS also looks like it makes some important strides from a quality-of-OS standpoint (though I have yet to put my hands on a Galaxy Nexus myself), so hopefully in a few months we'll see those benefits rolled into our GS2s.
I hope you're right and Windows Phone has greater traction in 3-4 years, and if it keeps going the way it's going, I may buy a windows handset in a couple years. Microsoft is still awful at marketing, though, and if average smartphone buyers know that there is something besides iPhone available, they probably have only heard of android, or maybe knew some guy who hated Windows Mobile five years ago. They've got a lot of hurdles to clear; we'll see how it goes.
To the OP: This has probably already been said to death, but the only GSM android phone that can be argued to be better than the SGS2 is the Galaxy Nexus right now. If you just want something different, I know a lot of people who like the RAZR, or you could always go for the monster of a phone that is the Note.
Having owned a nexus (ok only for a few days) i would say that the SGS2 is the better phone. Yes the Nexus has ICS and a nice screen but you are limited with Flash (ok it will come), no radio and mainly storage. I just cant live with non expandable phones with only 16gb on board. Maybe in a few months if and when the 32gb version of the nexus comes along and they have fixed flash but not now.
As shr33kant said, the SGS2 is one update (ICS) away from being a totally better phone than the Nexus.
Maybe the Note is the way forward. I have been toying with the idea myself. The screen would be massive for Video. And by the way i didnt really see / feel a difference in screen size between the SGS2 and Nexus, not sure why i didnt but i didnt.
Hope this helps.
Either the SGN or the Razr. I'd go for the latter if i were you, it seems so durable and premium...

He'll probably get board with that, so to make it interesting he has to make a random choice between 6 'chutes. One of them has a chute but no connection ropes.
Ha ha, Russian roulet sky diving!
