Consolidate Flashing ROM process into one post? - Hero CDMA General

I am getting confused with all of the little pieces involved in flashing a new ROM.
Can someone consolidate all of the steps starting at #1 into one post? lol

Then copy Rom zip file to sd card. Boot into recovery by turning phone off then hold home and power. Then choose "choose zip" option. Then press home when prompted.

That is for rooting. Im looking for the complete step by step to put a new ROM on.

that is how you install a rom. you have to have root and recovery first before you can install a different rom. thats why that was posted. the second part is how you install. its that easy

here is a how to with videos and written explanations ...
if u need more then this then stick with the stock.. haha

You need to remount /system as rw and delete the file in /system/etc named install-recovery.sh before you can flash clockworkmod.

When the update came down they add this to make sure your phone is not modified. You can do it in one of two ways either use adb shell into your phone from windows/linux and type mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system then cd /system/etc and rm install-recovery.sh I am pretty sure that is what the file is called or you can use connectbot and use the same commands to delete the file.
This process may sound funny, but it most most of the time if you're having the issue with clockwork recovery not sticking.
Step 1 & 2: Download both the newest Noobnl kernel and clockwork recovery zip files.
http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/noobnl.andromeda.kernel.v1.4.0.zip
http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/one.click.clockworkmod2.5.1.0-flasher-fixed.zip
Step 3: Once downloaded copy them to your phone's SDcard.
Step 4: Remove the battery cover of your phone but leave the phone's power on.
Step 5: Run the one click installer for clockwork recovery.
Step 6: Once the phone reboots and you see the "While Samsung" like when you first power the phone pull out the usb cord as well as the battery. Do not let you phone boot all the way. If it gets to the Sprint 4G animation then it's too late and you have to run the one click recovery installer again.
Step 7: Put the battery back in then boot your phone into recovery. (Vol. down + camera + power) It should boot you into clockwork recovery.
Step 8: Navagate through recovery with the smile face to move the cursor down and "h" key to select. Choost to "install zip from SDcard" then "Choose zip file from SDcard"
Step 9: Install the Noobnl kernel zip file first. Once it's installed, select "Choose Zip from SDcard again" then install the clockwork recovery zip file. Do not reboot between installing each file.
Step 10: Choose "go back" then reboot phone.
Step 11: Once the phone is rebooted, shut down the phone. Reboot the phone in recovery again. (camera + vol down + power) If all goes right, you should be good to go.

No you do not have to be rooted. It will root itself when you apply Noobnl's kernel. One of the reason clockwork isn't sticking in the first place is because the phone didn't properly take in the root process. When that happens the phone will wipe it out as well as recovery once the phone is rebooted. Clockwork will stay installed so long as you do not let the phone reboot all the way to lock screen.
FYI. My process the last few times when flashing back to stock with Odin it to update to DI18. Followed by the process to install clockwork i explained here. Then flash rooted kernel and recovery zip. Finally rom and theme after a reboot.
uhh
I don't ever loose root access... while updating I am just loosing custom recovery!
I want to keep custom recover and be stock d118! and flash Bubs battery rom? with no INSTA FC'S
The reason clockwork is not sticking is because the latest ota runs a checksum on the recovery to make sure its stock if it isn't then it will reflash the stock recovery. To fix it the install recovery script in /system/etc needs to be deleted then you can flash clockwork.

But for some reason the root process you used isn't properly sticking hence why clockwork isn't sticking either.
Don't make this more complicated then it needs to be, just download the zip file here extract it to your dektop. Make sure you have usb debugging enabled on your phone. (Settings/Applications) Open the folder and click on run-try-last.bat. Press enter and let the script do its thing if it says device not found reboot your phone and try again. If clockwork still isn't sticking, run the script once more following the above instructions but this time when the phone reboots pull the battery at the black screen with the white "Samsung" letters. Reboot the phone fully, shut it down, then camera+volume up+power to get into recovery. All of this comes after installing the DI18 update.
THANKS

Help! Might have messed my phone up

LOL i was about to say i have a fascinate, but it would be redundant because I am posting in a Fascinate forum.
Hi guys, first post, thought I would post first about something not help related, but my phone is messed up.
I rooted my phone with 1 click root from android central, then i flashed it using odin and backed up my rom ( i guess stock touchwiz) with CWM from rom manager. Then i installed this theme: AOSP REVOLUTION a port on androidforums the adress is /fascinate-all-things-root/251094-theme-port-aosp-revolution.html ( after androidforums obviously, i cant post links!) ) -_-
I installed it by downloading the zip, renaming it to update, and launched CWM recovery and ran apply sd update.zip. Then i rebooted my phone the verizon logo flashed for a long time then the screen went black, and when i pressed the power buton all that happened is that the 4 buttons would light up.
Can anybody help me, sorry if i pissed you off because of my uber-noobness, but i just got the phone a month ago and rooted it yesterday. I made sure i followed the direction so my phone does mess up, but something went wrong after installing that theme. Thanks a FREAKING GAGILLION if you can help!
PS Another noob move but how do I run the backup that i made? sorry for my noobness if it offends u.
If you have ClockworkMod recovery installed, you just need to boot into it and restore your backup. Shut down the phone. Hold both volume up and down and then press power. When you see the Samsung logo, release power but keep holding the volume buttons. It'll boot into standard recovery. Select apply update.zip and it'll boot you into Clockwork. Should be easy to figure out how to restore from there.
If this doesn't work, then you don't have clockwork installed, or installed correctly. There should be a recent post on installing a new red clockwork. Follow that and then follow the instructions above except for applying update.zip. The new red clockwork boots directly, without going through the stock blue recovery first.
Alternately, there are various all-in-one Odin packages floating around here that will return you pretty much back to stock.
The problem you have here is that you flashed a theme that is made specifically for a the asop Rom. So the thing to do is download another Rom, place on root of sd card, boot into recovery (hold both volume keys and power until samsung logo flashes twice), wipe your data and cache, flash rom and reboot. I'm assuming you have updated to dl09 so you want a dl09 rom. here is a suggestion http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894126, just download system rom part, ignore the odin stuff. hope this helps

This was also a mistake. On this device CWM depends on there being a cwm update.zip on the root of you sd card. To flash a rom/kernel/theme on this device you leave it alone and placed anywhere on the card. When booted in to cwm you use the "install zip from sdcard" option.
good day.
Yes LordShark,
As mentioned above, you do not rename the file at all. You can call it "umpty-Squat-Rom-Of-The_gods.zip or whatever you want, you boot into the CWM and as pointed out above, you will choose install zip from card and you will navigate to that umpty-squat that you downloaded to the phone.
So pull your SD card out and download a ROM and place it in the SD Card in a folder you like, I personally just use the default location od SD CARD / CLOCKWORKMOD / DOWNLOAD and store all my ROMs and stuff in that folder.
Hope this helps. Do not get too excited, your not ubber borked.... even if you are in a total panic you can follow the Adrynalyne ODIN back to bone stock DI01 post and in not to long you will up and running.

How to install Google Apps custom ?

Hi, I have this ROM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQvrEH74dgI, my question is how to install the google apps (2nd link). Thanks.
Boot into recovery (power on holding the Power and Volume Down button) and in the recovery screen, select "install zip from sd".
Select internal or external storage/sd and browse to the file, select it with the power button. It'll do its thing and after, I would clean the dalvik cache and reboot.
I assume you've got a custom recovery already installed, since you've got the custom rom already installed.
I did this
Before proceeding, please keep in mind that your handset will be wiped clean of all data so make a backup of your data. Also, the steps below require your handset to be rooted with a custom recovery installed. If your handset is not rooted, I’d recommend you not to flash this ROM since its not meant for amateurs.
Step 1: Download CM9 Alpha 4 for Epic 4G from here or here. Also download the supplementary Google Apps package from here.
Step 2: Boot into CWM Recovery, and select the ‘Wipe data/Factory Reset’ option. Then navigate to Mounts and Storage and select the ‘format /system’ option.
Step 3: After you have formatted all the partitions on your Epic 4G, select the ‘install zip from SD card’ option, and then select the CM9 Alpha 4 zip file. Once the CM9 file has been flashed, again select the ‘install zip from SD card’ option, and this time select the Google Apps zip file package.
When the flashing process is complete, simply reboot your phone and wait for it to boot into CM9. Keep in mind that the first boot might take sometime, so please be patient.
Do NOT restore your app data backup. Doing so can lead to instabilities, and other issues. Also, please don't complain about feature X or Y not working. The ROM is in Alpha for a particular reason.

23.Then ROM upgrade screen will be loaded.
24.Press power button to start update the ROM.
25.ROM update process will take around 15 minutes.
Gosh, you're doing it in such a complicated way. I'll give you a simple idiot proof guide. (Android guide, as wp7 is too easy)
1. Flash the correct hspl and radio according to what the rom thread says, download links of these should be provided on rom thread.
2. Install MAGLDR (So much easier to use than CLK) From here
3. Install Clockwork mod recovery, from here
Although before flashing go onto the android rom thead that you wish you flash and on there you will see the recomended system and cache sizes. Once you unzip the clockwork download file, you should see a file called: Flash.cfg Open/edit this file and then enter the recommended files from the thread.
4. Then go onto the thread and download the nandroid rom you wish to flash.
5. Go onto MAGLDR and click on option mount storage and then mount SD card, then simply put the zip rom into the root of the sd card.
6. On Magldr select the option of Nand recovery.
7. Voila you're in Clockwork mod recovery, now clear system data, and clear cache. After that go onto additional options and clear the dalvik cache.
8.Next just simply follow the recovery steps and install zip from sd card and flash the rom.
9. Once flashed it should automatically reboot and select Nand as default boot, and load the android rom.
Simple.

the magldr sd mount doesn't always work, sometimes corrupts larger files. Safer to use teh 'mounts and storage - mount sd card' option in cwm.

Dont worry man, once you install CWM, you will be able to install a NAND rom of your choice on the internal memory of your phone. The rom you install will have everything eg. kernels, scripts. Basically all you need to do is install CWM then install a rom of your choice. Here is a guide to do install clockworkmod(CWM)
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...kmod-recovery-on-android-htc-hd2-with-magldr/
and here is how to install a rom using clockworkmod
1. turn off you phone
2. turn it on while keeping the power button pressed (dont let go until you see the MAGLDR menu)
3. Go to option 8 "AD recovery"
4. You will boot into clockworkmod
5. Go to mounts and storage
6. Mount the sd card(connect your phone to the pc via usb cable, and then select this option)
7. Place your downloaded rom .zip file on the sd card, root level
8. unmount your fone.
9. Go to "install zip from sd card option"
10. then select "choose zip from sd card"
11. Select the rom.
12. The rom will be installed on your fones internal memory.
13. When it is done, just reboot your phone.
14. ENJOY
NOTE: Remember to choose the correct partition size when selecting which clockworkmod to install. there are 150mb, 250mb and 400mb partitions available. The procedure to install them is the same.
Hope it helps.

Yeah, follow ^his guide. In case you get lost and want more detail, follow this guide. It also includes things such as partitioning the SD if needed.
When he talks about partition sizes, you need to look at the first post of the ROM you want to flash, and see what it says. Then use either the HD2 NAND Toolkit to flash that size, or do the following:
1. Download a CWM file (e.g. the ones at the bottom of the guide I posted)
2. Open the folder
3. Find flash.cfg (not flash.cfg.txt) and open it with notepad
4. Change the system value to the one stated in the OP
5. Save the file
6. Go to USB Flasher in MAGLDR
7. Connect phone to PC
8. Run Daf.exe in the CWM folder
9. Boot into CWM and follow the steps by adil1508 or the guide I posted to flash a ROM.

I genuinely cannot make it any simpler than this guide. When it says flash the correct partition size, use the HD2 NAND Toolkit to flash a 175mb partition.
