Anyone had problems with the battery cover? I took mine off when I first got it and when I tried to put it back, it only clipped into 3 corners, 1 was loose and slide on and off so was never flush.
I've sent it back to Mobilephonesdirect for them to "assess" and see if a replacement is needed. Bloody hope so, its faulty!
Nope, no problems here although i had to open & close the cover several times to reset the device.
Other than finding it the worst battery cover design ever made by HTC, no. I did notice that when putting it back on you put the right side in first and then snap it all down evenly, that it left one corner up and it simply needed a gentle push and it all went flush.
I am concerned about the long term use of the cover, it is difficult to get on and off at best and certainly not designed for ease of use.
The cover is metal but the phone it snaps onto is plastic....and the plastic contact points will wear, that's if the metal battery cover itself doesn't relax its shape a little and get less tight. It seems a bad solution to me but HTC aren't alone in this, I see that battery covers are becoming cheaper and nastier across all brands. At least the HTC cover is metal. I try not to remove my cover...ever.
Yeah, it's a little tight for my liking, if you swap out the sim or memory card a lot it could cause problems. Second battery too.
Hopefully the back case will be available to buy somewhere. It must cost pennies to make.

Yeah, but they'll probably be available on eBay for about £25, despite that.
I thought I was doing something wrong when I could not budge mine.
On a new phone it takes quite a bit of brute force.

Yep, mine stays up on one corner too. Just a little nudge and its back on flush!
Technique is King
Everything requires a technique, then it becomes easy!.
Really all one needs to do is slide your thumbnail under the cover's edge; from one end to the other till there is a millimeter gap, then voila! simply pull off!
If you try to pull it off using the indented 'tab' then good luck to you, Frustration Guaranteed!

Unforyunately my phone already got stuck a couple of times and the only way to bring it to live again was removing the cover and soft reset or remove the battery.
A shame that the reset button is not reachable from the outside. It might be easy to make a small hole in the cover right above the reset button.

I had the same problem with the cover on mine. I found that I must have slightly bent the cover when i first removed it, when i bent it back (to make the fit a bit tighter) it never happend after that.

I will try not too. However if the phone locks up I'll have no choice but to remove the cover and press the red button.

Some of the covers are a bit loose. Thank goodness the shop I bought it from, replaced mine for me.

Last night, after I flashed the newest Mary ROM, it turned off suddenly and would not turn back on. I heard something rattling around in there so I took off the battery cover and removed the battery. Didn't see anything, so I took out the stylus to see if it was making the noise. When I shook the phone (gently), a very very very tiny screw flew out of the phone.
The phone now will randomly turn itself off.
I have no idea where this screw goes. I think I have to take the phone apart to look.
Has this happened to anyone? Does anyone know how the screw could've come loose?
when i took my niki apart to line up the case better (HTC Build is [email protected]!) two screws that hold the slider on were loose!!! in fact weren't even tightened up, which is odd, as all the others had some kinda blue glue holding them in. :/

oh wow. were those two loose screws very very very tiny? the one that fell out of mine were smaller than screws that you use to hold glasses together.

did you work it out? i took apart my nike to rebuid it a bit better, the back was creaking after last time i took it apart..
the screw could have come from a bunch of places, i noticed a small screw holding the mainboard in and one holding the small pcb at the top with the speaker etc.. its probably one of them. i'd screw it back in asap though.

No. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to go buy a kit that I can use with those itty bitty screws. I hope to do it soon. Will report back to let you know where that little bugger came from.

I sent my husband to the store to get tools so I can put this cursed screw back in my phone but the kit he got was too big! What kind of tools are you guys using to take your phones apart?? Where might I get some??
im not sure where you can get them - most likely any hardware store, online, ebay. there are 2 types of screws in the nike.. you'll need a torx screwdriver (a t6 should do it) to get it open, and a real small philips (not sure about size.. just real small lol) for a couple of screws inside..

I know this is slighty offtopic and i apologise. However, after you tightened your case up did it eliminate all the 'wobble' when the device was closed?
It is just me or does the battery cover really not clip on very well at all?
Mine is constantly falling off and is not easy to clip back on solidly
Yeah i heard of this problem. The guy in the shop where i bought my phone told me that this is a problem of the first build devices of the X1. i was lucky, because i got one of the "secound generation".
maybe you are able to change it?

i don't know where you can see this exactly. If you'r battery cover fits on you'r phone everything seems alright.
mine is letting loose of it's clips too on one side of the X1. It's really annoying cauze I have to push it back into the right position every time. But it's not falling off or so. It's just not tight on the phone.
I had this problem, but it's easily fixed... if you take the cover off the back and find the two metal prongs which would touch the cover when placed over it (the sony ericsson symbol side). simply press them down slightly. i think they're there for a reason so make sure they still touch the cover. hope this helps.

Same here. I just took the back panel off and gave it a first squeeze, now fits pretty well.
Wish I had thought to do you method though, would have been neater as the back does bulge a little now but doesn't fall off anymore. Sadly I hadn't spotted that the clips were addons rather than moulded into the metal.
I must say that I'm not too confident about the batterycover at this moment. It still hangs on, but not too well. On my X1 it tends to jump off automaticly when I put the cover on, luckily it hasn't happened yet though. Seems there's some tension pushing the cover out.
had the same problem. i fixed it by expanding the little two bumps on the site, which hold the cover with a knife.
Hi guys, I've owned an Xperia Play since July 2011, since then I've had some 'Battery Cover' issues. First, let's start off by talking about the battery cover itself, well actually there's not much to say. If you have an Xperia Play you already know the battery cover is very cheap, it's a large rectangular piece of plastic that covers the entire back on the phone, it's a pain to get it off and on at times. So not only it is cheaply made, it also has the tendency to start 'squeaking' or 'creaking' after a while. This simple issue can be fixed my ordering a new back piece to replace the old one, but note, if you swap batteries, swap SIM cards, swap SD cards, or anything that involves taking the battery cover off, it WILL, at some point in time, get worn out and slightly bent out of place. There's no escaping this problem due to it's design. In the past I've ordered about 3 Black battery cover replacements, and each one of them, after sometime, became creaky. Now maybe I'm just being picky but I REALLY hate picking up my phone and hearing that *squeaky* sound. It annoys the piss out of me. So I've came up with a way to prevent / fix this. What I'm about to guide you through is EXTREMELY simple and shouldn't cost you more than $2... ENJOY
SUPPLIES: Electrical Tape & Scissors
(1) Hold your phone to where the back is facing you, gently but firmly press all around until you've found your squeaky area. ( take a mental note of where this spot is )
(2) Remove the battery cover.
(3) Cut off a piece or two of electrical tape according to the size of the squeaky area, place the electrical tape on the inside of the battery cover where you took a mental note of.
(4) Put the battery cover back on! You're all done! No more squeaking!
It worked for me, it should definitely work for you! Try it out and post your results! Don't forget to *Thank* me!
(I've included a picture of what the results look like, lol I'm sure we all know what a piece of tape looks like on a piece of plastic but yeah here's one in case you don't!)

I've replaced the battery lid a few times but I've never had the creaking problem. I wonder if it has something to do with the CDMA version not having the space for the SIM card.
Anyway, I do agree that they are poorly made. My first one developed cracks around the pry point and around the top even before I got a second battery. Obviously, battery swapping means I open it more often than most users, but I was EXTREMELY careful. Eventually I lost the corner next to the power button. On my replacement I made sure to never use the pry point without relieving pressure by pulling the corners too (usually unclipping them first). I also used a stick-on carbon-fiber protector from the day I installed it till the day I replaced it. It eventually formed a crack by the pry point too. Argh!
I see this is a very common problem with these phones. Except mine had snapped in half, and I was barely able to get the microSD card out. Now my SIM is stuck inside, along with the lower half of the tray. Issue is it's no longer under warranty. I've tried a few things, like holding it upside down and lightly thumping the top of the back/front with my palm. but that ****er just won't pop out. I'm leery of sticking anything inside there for fear of damaging anything, let alone attempting to pull it out with a cut credit card and a sliver of glue. I'm thinking I'll take it to a repair shop, but I heard that once it's taken apart, it loses its waterproof seal. Can anyone confirm this? Or offer some other advice?

With fricking care I put a drop of super glue on a toothpick and fished mine out is how I did mine 3 times. I've broke 4 trays. I got a feeling it's something to do with sd cards ever since I quit using a SD card I haven't broke not 1. It's a punk ***** and I don't know why Samsung wouldn't use the metal ttys like in the past. I have several posts on this issue myself.
Yes once disassembled you lose the water proofing. I had to send mine in for warranty and needed my sim out of it obviously. And those tards of coarse said of the tray is broke the warranty was voided so I did everything in my power to remove it. But I did 3 times over

I'm very leery of using anything to do with glue, to be honest. Though that looks like I will have to do exactly that, unfortunately.

I mean I literally used like a quarter drop on the very top tip. The credit card idea seams even better a bit more surface area. The second time my tray got stuck totally and I bit the bullet and forced it out and it split in the middle between the SD and sim. Left the second half in it. The eject button doesn't work any more when I put my tool in now I have to angle it and pull. I haven't broke it now in like 6 months since I put my SD card in my Ps vita
I have never rough housed mine in the end I have probably removed my trays about 15 times since owning this device.
This is one of the biggest flaws with this device imo and I can't find a compatible aluminum tray anywhere
Could try pinching it out with two sewing needles?
Have done this with an iPhone for someone before. :crying:
Just make sure phone's off to avoid shorting anything...

I'm gonna get a pair of eyebrow pluckers, or whatever you call those really thin tweezers, and try to pluck it out that way. There is a small part of one side that is close to the top of the slot (as it broke off... diagonally, sort of), so hopefully I can grab ahold of that.

No such luck. It's really hard to see in there and even with a bright light and magnifying glass, I can't seem to find it. Looks like I'll have to take it to a repair shop and lose the waterproof seal, since they'll have to take it apart.

I guess I got lucky. Food for thought after the fact. Get a LifeProof case. Their water proof at least give back some of the resistancy. That's what I got on mine... I swapped frames and screens on Mine
get a new glass back with the ip68 tape. cost around $10 and waterproofing stays intact. pull the old one off and just make sure you clean the bonding area well.
I've done this 2x with mine and have no issues with water intrusion.

Can you point me in the direction of a tutorial? For future reference and for anyone else who may have to do this as well? I've already had mine repaired and all's well, but I think this info would come in handy for others (including me if it happens again). The fact that people are having to do stuff like this multiple times with their phones is rather frightening.

Not sure on the rules for posting links, but if you search youtube for "S8 back glass replacement" you can find plenty of videos. I personally used the ifixit teardown guide just to familiarize myself with any cables or things to watch out for.
For the back glass itself, just make sure you get one with the camera lens pre-installed and with ip68 tape. Price for the one i bought is currently $10.02 on ebay.

Yeah. I will second this. I do all my own repairs. But in this case I just don't care. I'm not interested in reselling. Or anything. This will be a backup in a few months. Time to move on. ???
It stays in the lifeproof so it's water resistant and I don't have to see it.
Solved!
1) Heat a needle, or a tiny flathead screwdriver, and stick it in.
2) Wait 1 minute.
3) Pull out needle or screwdriver to find sim attached and out!
Recently, my back cover (upper left corner down to about the center of the phone as viewed from the front) has begun to peel away from the bezel. It appears to have affected the signal strength. It can be pressed closed, but will not (obviously) stay that way. It may have been the battery swelling...but perhaps not. I tried to contact Essential service...but no answer.
So Sad,
This phone is in perfect condition, not a scratch on it, been in a cover it's entire life. Purchased directly from Essential!
Still works fine, but likely will not survive long term with the case being open.
I am looking for a replacement in the same form factor/size with a same sized-or larger screen.
I would have kept this phone for a much longer time, if not for this issue.

Up to you, but you can get a screen with the glue and battery for about $30. The tear down is pretty simple once you watch a video. The glue will be enough for the screen and back. I just did my wife's, hers was well used. and after, it's like brand new. Just a thought.
Edit: I forgot to mention. If you take this route. some clothes pins with some paper towels help keep the screen and back, nice and tight while the glue cures.
Oddly, my screen is adhered perfectly...just the back section is coming apart.
Perhaps it's time to search out a "same form factor/slightly larger" phone with the better or the same basic specs?

Happened to me when it launched. It's more than likely just the adhesive. There's nothing behind the back cover. You might want to get new adhesive and work on peeling the rest off and re-attaching it. Battery is behind the screen and if it were swelling, the screen would begin lifting too.
Just be careful removing the back, if you choose to. It's ceramic, so it's hard but usually hard also means brittle. The screen is also held on by adhesive, so using heat could weaken it under the screen too, depending where you apply the heat.
Also, Essential went out of business in February. No one there's gonna read your emails.
Any idea what the adhesive is??

No, sorry. When it happened to me, I warrantied it. Wish I could help more. Try looking at some teardowns. But the iFixit teardown was done completely wrong - Essential addressed that in a Reddit AMA shortly after launch. iFixit tried to freeze it to remove the screen and gave a bad rating as a result when you remove the screen with heat. The Essential is put together very similarly to a PIxel, actually. But, it is what it is.
One of the teardown guides/videos might show or mention the adhesive used.

Will have to get another cell phone to replace it, but what is the about the same size with a bigger or same sized screen?

It's not bad to replace the battery. It's cheaper than a new phone anyway
