Dear Readers
I cannot hear telephone calls any more, unless I use my headset plugged into the 3.5mm jack
The Speaker phone button does not work when I am dialling or connected
I cannot hear them and they cannot hear me
Has anyone else had this problem?
What did you do to fix it?
Thank you in advance for your help
Nigel
Welcome to forums
Try to insert carefully a screwdriver on your 3.5mm out audio, sometimes it get stucked and device thinks audio headset it still connected.
Hope it works,
Thank you for the tip
What specifically am I looking to loosen that is stuck?
Presumably, I have to disconnect the battery first?
Is there a software setting somewhere that enables or disables the Audio Out?

ok it's common in uni but did you say other party can not hear you as well...
it's mostly like to happen as the uni thinks the headphone jack is still inside....the button sometimes gets jammed... see the following thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=290497&highlight=universals+sound+problem
Thanks Rajiv, I was looking for that thread
Updated on the FAQ
Thank you for the link to the very informative thread
Neither side of the conversation could hear anything without the headset
While I was waiting, I took out and re-inserted the battery and then restarted the device and it works normally now

Hi,
Is there anything that can be done to improve the mic volume when on speaker phone - I have had complaints when more than a foot or so away that people can't hear me.
I have the phone open on my desk most of the time and am just trying to work out the best way to deal with calls as they come in. At the moment unplugging the USB and then flipping the screen and then trying to answer the call seems a bit ham fisted and I keep on loosing calls
I personally never use my MDA Pro as a conventional phone. I find it too bulky. My own method is to always use a bluetooth headset.
If I was in your situation, I would have the Universal open on my desk, with the bluetooth headset lying beside it. When the phone rings, simply put on the bluetooth headset, press the call receive button on it, and away you go.
You don't really need to flip the screen, just close it and then use the green button to answer the call. Will work fine with the USB connected if you don't mind people looking at you strangely.
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the responses.
I don't have a headset so haven't gone down that route yet. Will they work with Skype and VOIP software etc on the phone?
As for closing and then picking up, I'm wondering if the phone has a problem because I have tried this a couple of times and have lost the calls although I am generally unplugging the USB, closing the phone and then answering - have only had the phone a couple of days so still getting the hang of it.
Hmmm....can it be used when in pda mode to answer and make calls... I have tried this, but I think either my machine's mic & speakers dont work on the inside (screen side) of the clamshell, the other person on the line can't hear, and I hear their voice (distantly), which means it is coming out of the back of the screen, not the front. Its either that or the device just isnt designed to work in this orientation.
Has anyone else tried recieving or making calls with the screen facing out in portrait mode?
Re the Bluetooth headset answering method, great idea, I do this, but I have found that sometimes my o2 blue headset loses the pairing when I press the answer call button, so I lose the call anyway.
Can anyone tell us how it should work, will the recent rom upgrade fix this, is there even a mic and speaker on the inside lid?

The Mic is right next to the power button, so it is as close to your mouth when in PDA mode or closed. Also There are two speakers on the hinged lid, in PDA mode it's the slightly recessed oval shape 10mm from the top dead centre.
I've never discovered a software method of disabling this speaker. Possibly a hardware fault? Might be worth discussing with your handset provider
So, my phone stopped working a few days ago. I've been running WM6 for quite some time now and I've even tried going back to Tmobile's ROM. Basically, when I receive/make a phone call, I can ONLY hear the person if I put them on speaker. They can hear me regardless, but I can't hear them. Pretty annoying.
Any ideas?
Heh! Quite a coincidence!!! I cannot hear anything from the headset either and it happened a short while after I upgraded to XDA6. It work fine with the stereo headset as well as with a BT one. The difference in my case is that I cannot switch to speakerphone. The phone is deaf without a hands-free device.
I have posted a separate thread on my problem - here it is
i have the same problem. phone is dead without a handsfree it happened to me last night all was good, i was listening to music to handsfree and removed them to make a call and it didnt work anymore..i reinstalled the rom, but no sound..any help anyone?
maybe the phone is stuck on handsfree..it things that the handsfree is plugged in or something?
problem solved trustworthy, i've put the jack in and out a few times..and now the sound works there is a switch that is pressed when you plug in the jack and maybe it got stuck on handsfree..try pressing it a few times..i don't know. now my phone works. i'll never plug in a handsfree again
I had the same problem--it was still under warranty...new MDA was the solution.
By the time it goes again I hope the next generation will be here!
I have the same problem as lilcam, the earspeaker is dead. I had the same problem once, and the service chage the speaker, first and the ringer, later and stars working just fine. Now, the silent speaker hits again and service says is not the same problem and they cant repar it. Does anybody have a clue?

Thanks for the hint, but I REPLACED the handfree jack and it still wouldn't work without the headset
The people, who got it serviced told me that there was a problem with the mmainboard, that they cannot deal with. As I've mentioned in my thread, they also told me that a faulty handsfree jack was a frequently occurring problem with the 9100. I would recommend to pdebeitia and Sisqo to try replacing the jack. Hopefully it might help...it did not work for me though...
BTW, pdebeitia and Sisqo, what ROM are your MDA's running or were runnig at the time when it happened?
yesterday i dropped my phone & i have now lost the ability to talk or hear while making a call. when i recieve a call my phone rings but i cannot have any type of conversation. i also get no sound from media player etc. if i use a bluetooth connection or a wired earpiece it is fine so i am a little confused as to what is wrong.
does anyone have any suggestions?
if it works with bluetooth then you have obviously dislodged the contacts of the speaker or broke the connection, open it up and make sure the connectors are still making contact find any post by mike shannon and click on his webpage link and download the wizard service manual. That will show you how to take it apart and also where the speaker and connections are located
thanks
i have the manual already so i will open her up tonight & have a look see!
i just found it odd that the person i am talking to (but cannot hear) cannot hear me either is the microphone & speaker on the same circuit perhaps?

Hey, if you've already done it - how'd it go?
I went through a similar ordeal and the earpiece stopped working. I did a soft reset and VOILA! Everything back to normal.
Then the same thing happened just recently without any physical shock to the phone. Had to do a hard reset - but it worked!
No the microphone isnt on the same circuit, but they are connected to the circuit boards in the same way, the speaker and microphone just sit on contacts rather than hard wired to the board so they can be easily replaced.
Its possible that the shock has moved them. I had this problem with my first wizard with the speaker, but it wasnt the contacts in my case.

Mike
thank you and clean usb port
Thank you for your help, I found out that the real problem was that the USB port was dirty, after clean it everything work fine. Probably is was waking some contact and made the phone think that a headset was plug. Thank you for your help.
Afternoon all,
I have recently bought another XDA II. The device was perfectly working fine until a weird thing happend. The sound for some weird reason stopped. I couldn't hear anyone over the phone nor I could hear the ringtone. The most weirdest thing is that even after burning different ROMs it is still the same. I can call and it connects the call fine however I cannot hear anything what the other person is saying. Its like the device gone mute! totally!.
Anyone had same or similar issues? and how did you manage to solve it?
Regards
Jay
there is a mechanical detector which detect when the headset is connected
when it gets stuck that happpens
many people fix it by inserting and removing the headset X number of times
Rudegar, Thanks for the quick reply.
You mean that I should connect my Handsfree bluetooth kit to the phone and then remove it again? Though I never connected any handsfree with it.
Regards
Jay
no wired headset
hmm. Ok I will have to find that since I dont have one. I will report back with the results.
Many thanks once again to help

Dust in contacts?????
Hello,
No I have cleaned the device. The strange thing is that it was working fine and then suddenly it stopped. I can hear the sound perfectly if I plug in the headphones (handsfree with cable works fine as well) however if I unplug it, there is no sound coming out of it at all.

Hello,
I have noticed another thing, if the battery dies totally and then recharged, the device plays the sound properly for a time being after that it goes back to the "stereo headphones" sound.
I am out of ideas what to do next. (I have installed different ROMs, added old and new Radio versions nothing is working).

After searching around endlessly I found a solution. I had to open the Hima and create a contact between the two gold springs with the speaker device. Here is the full solution given by Rayan :

Hope this helps others in future.
