I use to have gmail working fine, then all of a sudden it stopped working one day. I've since deleted and re-added the account several times now and still nothing. It says it connects, and it takes the time to download all of the headers etc. however nothing shows up in the inbox? Is there a way to browse the system files to view if it's actually downloading the headers at all?
Weird...The exact same thing happened to me. I did what you did...created a new account on the phone and it says downloading headers, but nothing appears in the Inbox. I'm stumped and a little ticked off that since it was working so well, I started to rely on it more than I should.
use smtp rather than imap. works fine
There is no imap feature for google mail, you have to use pop3, which is what I use. Regardless it was working fine before... now it just doesn't work at all.
Welcome to the world of gmail. Now that the dust has settled, people are starting to see that this really is a beta.
My advice would be to wait patiently. There is probably nothing you can do, it's an issue with gmail. I have had all sorts of problems with gmail, especially with pop3. I reckon it will sort itself out soon enough.
Did you double check how much you set it to download from the message (The screen where you pick to download either headers or full messages) and made sure that require ssl and outgoing mailserver requieres authentication are checked?. It sometimes doesn't work for me, but it's cause of my GPRS connection, I have the $6 t-zones manually set up. Sometimes when I'm trying to check it it won't open the connection, but if I go into connections and open the connection manually it works fine. That's not very common place though.
When I used gmail pop3 it always seemed buggy (on the wizard...), my solution was to have gmail forward a copy of all mail to a free mail2web exchange acc't, and it then gets pushed to the phone. Works flawlessly for me, however, deleting messages read in one place won't effect the other, and outgong mail from the wizard will be from your mail2web address (there may be a way to spoecify a diff sending address, not sure...)
I know this is not really the answer to your problem, but It is what I did...
my prob. seemed to be to many msgs
i just changed the pop setting that says"all mail"or "just mail from now on" to just from now on and it seems to be working, before i had 249 headers to display, i also changed storage to my SD
bhang
I also forward my gmail to mail2web, and tried to setup mail2web on my wizard so that the return address was gmail. No love. I called mail2web and was told that none of their plans (free or not) supported this feature :-(
directpush
There is a gentleman on this site who has offered to setup people on an exchange server that he has setup. It's free, but he does take donations. He set it up for me so that the address that shows up when I send or reply from my MDA is my gmail. all I had to do was forward my gmail to the new exchange account. you might be able to find it by searching port88.org
I set the pop settings to email from today on out or w/e and now my gmail is working =/
For me Gmail auto configs. All I have to put in is my gmail account and it sets everything up automatically and I just have to put in my password. Never had a problem.
I set the pop settings to email from today on out or w/e and now my gmail is working =/
i had this problem once before... i had to go into gmail and turn off pop then turn it back on... after that it worked fine....
Anyone else here have their emails sent from the web client show up on the inbox on their device? How do you get rid of that... One suggestion was a filter but the phone doesnt support filters, and I dont want to add 3rd party pop 3 software as I can scroll through text messages etc. with the standard mailing software.
Hey all,
I've been having some problems with POP3 and gmail on my TyTN/8525. That problem being: it doesn't work anymore. It worked great for about a week, then just stopped working for no apparent reason. I didn't change any of my gmail settings during this time.
After it stopped working, I randomly got 5 of the 100+ e-mails that I was suppsoed to get. Gmail is receiving them fine and I can see them when I login to gmail, they just don't get downloaded when my phone pops it. I can send e-mail through gmail's pop fine.
Anyone have a clue what my problem might be?
Thanks,
Todd

Which wireless provider?
Have you tried deleting the Gmail account on the TyTn and then re-adding it?
Can you POP3 access it from you'r home computer etc (to make sure it is not a Gmail issue)?
If these do not help post you're setup so we can take a look
I think the problem seems to stem from the fact that Gmail breaks down your messages in groups, like around 300 or so messages at a time. On top of that, Pocket IE doesn't download the full messages by default and, as such, leaves a copy of the messages on the server. I think when this happens, Gmail doesn't prepare the next "group" of messages to send to you. Also, Pocket IE, by default, is set to show only messages from the last 3 days, so even though it may have downloaded a bunch of messages, you'll only see the ones that are 3 days old or less. You'll want to uncheck that option.
Try setting up your account as you normally would in the desktop mail app of your choice, Outlook Express for example. Make sure it isn't set to leave a copy of the messages on the server. If Outlook Express didn't download the first group of messages, make sure to do a manual send and receive. That will hopefully tell Gmail to prepare your next group of messages. Alternate Send/Receives with your phone and Gmail until you get to your most recent messages. Also, try putting recent in front of your user name, IE, "recent:[email protected]" instead of just your user name/e-mail address.
i find with gmail that it stops working every few weeks and i have to go into gmail on my pc and re-check the Get all pop email from now, ( it seems there are too many emails to be sent down )
using the "recent:" prefix before your login in your outlook username should fix this.

I configured the WM6 email application to pull my gmail, however it's not pulling just the stuff from my gmail inbox, but also stuff that's been moved to my deleted/spam folder via filters i've created.
what i'd like to do is
- just pull stuff from my inbox
- only keep 1 or 2 days worth of gmail messages on my phone
Is this possible? I tried the java gmail client but it was awful.
Try emoze for gmail.

Well, I installed emoze but have no idea how to use it. I went to download the user manual from emoze.com but it says it's not available because it's being updated.
I'm using the gmail gateway, no PC involved at all, I ran emoze and entered my username, password and configured the various options, after that it said something about synching, reached 100% and now nothing.
It just shows my username, a greyed out send box, a sign out box, log, settings and accounts button as well as an OK in the upper right. I have no idea how to get or send email via gmail with this app.
Sheesh, the MS application actually pulls down email from my outbox when i send it from my PC. Nice.
I also registered for the emoze forums but need to wait for someone to approve my application.
ok, i think i see, looks like it created a mail account in messages by itself. however i didnt really get a chance to look because my battery is almost dead. apparently i'm going to have to tweak how often messages are pulled. my battery is fine all day with every 10 minutes for exchange, but adding emoze drained it in a few hours.

If you click on the Accounts button and then Open Account (there should already be one account installed there already by now), you can select "push every 30 minutes" for instance. When it's not pushing, emoze goes into "sleep" mode. So battery drain should not be much of an issue. Incidentally, you may STILL select "Always On". Your mileage may vary i suppose...
And you can select your own range of Active Hours. Mine is only on manual i.e. only turned on when I'm on the move. Otherwise, I have my gmail account (the one that's tagged to emoze) to automatically forward email to any of of my OTHER gmail or POP accounts (the ones I use on my desktop at the office daily)
Not as ideal as "always on" blackberry email, but I stopped paying for my blackberry account coz, long term, it just ain't worth it for me. (I was using my Blackberry account on my Dopod 838Pro)
One man's meat... (and all that).
Does Gmail calendar sync work? I keep selecting that checkbox, but when I go back to that screen it's unchecked and no calendar events are being pulled down.

I assume the calendar sync on Emoze is supposed to work with Google Calendar (?).
In any case, I don't use it since I only sync the onboard organizer items (Calendar, Tasks, Notes, Contacts) with my Outlook PST file at home or office via Activesync/PocketInformant .
I have searched for email problems but found none that describe my problem.
The problem is this.
1. Emails that have been read, but not deleted are removed from my HD2.
2. I get a notification that an email has been delivered. If i don't read that email, pick up my phone and so on. I can return to my phone knowing that i should have a message to read and find none.
I believe that what may be happening is that my emails are getting cleared down on every send/receive schedule.
Can anyone assist?
I am not saving messages to the SIM card currently.
I had that problem.
I guess that messages are deleted from hd2 when they are deleted from mail server
In other words, when you download them with computer for example, where you probably set it to: delete messages from server after they are downloaded, they are deleted from hd2 after next send,receive...
So I guess that these emails you would like to read them on your hd2 are deleted because in the mean time you or some software deleted them from email server
I find this happens if I empty the deleted items folder in Outlook on the Windows PC to which my HD2 is synched.
Disappearing email
On HTC Touch HD, when I wanted to save an email, I have deleted it. In that way it stayed preserved in the "deleted items" folder.
However, on HD2 email is disappearing from that folder also, after it has been deleted on the server.
Is there any way to save e-mails permanently on HD2? Except moving it to the "drafts" folder...

find the email options screen that lets you set the storage location, and on that page is the option to control when and how to empty the deleted items which by default is set to automatic on connect disconnect.

Thank you for your reply, samsamuel!
I have tried to find an email option screen that you are referring to, but I just don't see it anywhere.
Could you please guide me to it?
TNX
sure, from home screen go mail -inbox -menu -scroll down to tools -options switch to storage tab and there it is.
Oooops, I 've missed the scroll down part.

hehe you aren't the first
Hi there!

Ok, switched to "Manually".
What I do (just for testing purposes):
1- I'm at home and using Outlook 2003, so from one email account of mine I send a short email to THE email account which is also set up in my HD2.
2- Once I see the email has been delivered, I force my HD2 to refresh and I receive the email.
3- Now I refresh Send/Receive in my Outlook. Fine, I receive the message too.
4- Finally, I refresh again (Send/Receive) in my HD2...
5- The email I had on my HD2 screen, is gone. If I go to my InBox folder, there's nothing there.
What's wrong? Although I know the server deletes the messages, why can't my HD2 keep a message that had already been received?
Cheers,

thats because when you check the account from the mobile, it leaves a copy of the email on the server, and creates a copy in your phones inbox. When you check from Outlook on the pc, it physically downloads the email, thus removing it from the server, so when you check again from the phone, the inbox is empty.
You can alter outlook to not remove messages, but you end up with all your mail stored on your pop server, and the isp might not like it if it grows too large.

Hi there samsamuel. Thanks for your answer.
I understand this behaviour, but what I can't possibly understand is why the email is not kept in my HD2: I get the notification, I click to download it, hence, in that very moment a copy of the email is in my device. Then, why can't it be kept in my device if it was already there!?
It's fine if later on, it refreshes and it detects that there's no email in the server's inbox....but please, don't delete me the copy that I already had in my device! It has no sense!
Isn't there an option to keep these copies?
And yes, you're right, I don't want to alter my outlook, that would be a nightmare.
Cheers!
No choice for that?
Are you all happy with this email behaviour?
..I'm asking because there seems not to be a solution for this...
Up...
I'm having the same problem man... it's giving me the ****S. How do I put android on this PoS HD2?!
figured it out...
Open inbox > Menu (scroll down to tools) > Options > Click your email account > skip through all the bull**** until you get to the "Email Setup, automatic send / receive & dowload messages" drop down boxes screens, Hit "Advanced Settings", then change the 'When deleting messages:' from delete them off the server to keep them on the server.
Stupid WinMo.
Try an email account that supports IMAP. Some providers allow POP3 or IMAP so you might not have to change accounts.
I don't like the way IMAP looks in Outlook, but it works much better across several devices. I have two PCs and a couple of phones. No matter where I am, each device always reflects what is ACTUALLY in my email online. It took a little adjusting to, but I think it's much better. In Active Sync/Windows Mobile Devie Center, I no longer have Outlook set to synchronise with my device. Try signing up for a free Gmail account and try it on your phone and in Outlook on a PC and see what you think...
Somehow found what seems to be the problem...
inbox - tools - options - accounts tab - choose your account - edit account setup - click next until:
Automatic Send/Receive:
[Every 60 minutes]
Download messages:
[From past 3 days]
Change this from past 3 days to All messages and voila!
It's seems to save space by providing you only with latest e-mails. Make sure to do the Storage options mentioned earlier!
I'm using a simple HTC mail windget (1x1), and I have the email account set to check for mail every 30 minutes. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
The mail is sure checked when the phone is on or when I go into the mail program manually, but when the phone is off, regardless of whether the mail program is running in the background - it's intermittent.
The only difference from stock settings - 3G mobile data is not always on.
On nexus one, this works just fine.
Oh yeah, this is for pop3 and hotmail accounts.
Oh yeah, and I tried k9, but it was superbuggy - creating phantom emails, then deleting some of my hotmail emails etc.
Any clues on how to trick the phone to check emails regularly on schedule?
K-9 is really giving me a lot of grief with "no subject" problems (though it checks mails properly like clockwork).
