Just want to let you know that I recently bought a Rogers Magic unlocked, and it came with the Perfect SPL out of the Box. So if you are planning to buy one of these I think you should know about this issue because you wont be allowed, as for now, to install custom roms. Only official updates.
HBOOT-1.33.0010 (SAPP50000)

I believe that it's possible to root that SPL using Flashrec... At least I've readed that some people have rooted that SPL using it...
I believe this is what you mean? ^^

i have a the same SPL and rooted using the link that was provided to you above. works great- get the latest Amon_Ra recovery though - ulocker doesnt have the 1.3.2H
i have that SPL and was able to use the one click root method, i now have Amon Ra latest recovery image loaded which is 1.5.2H, should i leave that spl since i already hav a custom recovery loaded or should i try to change it????

No need to change.
I bought a HTC Magic from Rogers about a week ago and mine came with HBOOT-1.33.0009 SAPP50000.
So it's not a sure deal, I'd advice that when you go and buy a HTC Magic, you simply check what SPL it's running first.. I doubt the shop keeper will mind you starting it in fastboot mode just to check.

Hi guys,
Not sure if anyone's brought this up but search didn't turn up anything. Anyways, I had flashed my T-Mobile MyTouch with Cyanogen's ROM a few weeks ago. At the time, I had 1.33.2005 for SPL (which is what came with the phone) and after T-Mobile performed their Donut upgrade.. now my SPL is 1.33.006. I would have never noticed this if I wasn't tempted to try out other ROMs. Now, I can't get into Recovery Mode but Fastboot still works. Nor am I able to use flashrec to dump the recovery image back. I didn't do anything to this phone since loading Cyanogen's ROM and at the time, I still had .2005 after I had it on.
Has anyone else noticed this?
WOW that sucks! the spl they gave you is a perfect spl.
My question is did they close the one click root access with the ota doughnut?

I had that HBOOT 1.33.0006 too, but I never took a look @ what I had before so I don't know if it has been changed. However, if memory serves me right, I thought we lost the ability to OTA upgrade when we root and flash custom roms? anyone can confirm on this?
Also I can still access recovery mode and fastboot, so it seems like nothing has been changed on my phone even though I have the same SPL as yours

That's what I thought too but this sudden change is worrisome. I'm also not sure if this SPL is even rootable with the current methods. By the sounds of it, I don't think so but correct me if I'm wrong.
This sucks!
I bought my MT3G last week and it came with that SPL. It's rootable, as long as you're on 1.5 firmware. Use the recovery flasher to flash Anom_RA's recovery, boot into recovery, flash a rooted ROM and the engineering SPL. Check my sig for the correct SPL.
If you're on 1.6, you're not out of luck. Pick up the SAPPIMG.nbh file, rename it to sappimg.nbh, place it in the root of your sdcard, boot up into hboot (volume down + power) and flash that. It will put you back into 1.5 firmware and from there you can repeat the steps above.

This worked great. Thank you sir!
I was holding off until I could get a definite answer on this question, but I accidentally clicked the Install button today... When it came back up, I still had the same SPL/Radio/etc that I started with: (this is with a MT3G on T-Mobile USA)

hi all
i've magic vodafone with a perfect spl, with the normal way to root not work...
can someone help me or tell us how to have root with my magic?
thanks so much
i don't know anything about the vodafone version, but my Rogers version (1.33.0010 Perfect SPL) got rooted just fine with the one click root (http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2009/08/16/android-rooting-in-1-click-in-progress/). Download the .apk, copy onto your SD card, and open it using Astro/Linda File manager. Then in the program backup your current ROM, then flash using either the default Cyanogen Recovery ROM (already in the the text box) or with the one you want (type in the path to the other Recovery ROM).

Don't see why it wouldn't be. They're both HTC Magic's. Either 32B or 32A. Either way, there's recovery ROMs for it. Read that RyeBrye link in my previous post, has a lot of good information.
http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2009/08/16/android-rooting-in-1-click-in-progress/
I know one click root works for the 1.33.0010 SPL, which is a perfected SPL. Assume it works for other Perfect SPLs.
Go ahead with it, it works
Just remember to backup your originar recovery before flashing the new one: you will need to flash it back if you send your handset to HTC for repair.

Here's what my Brain thinks:
1.) Download an SPL (i.e Haykuro's "Death" SPL).
2.) Transfer to SD Card.
3.) Go into Recovery Mode (Amon_Ra-v1.5.2G)
4.) Scroll down to "Flash zip from sdcard".
5.) Flash Haykuro's "Death" SPL.
6.) Reboot system now and wait for it to enter Recovery Mode again.
8.) Check for new SPL, and you're done?

2.) No wiping required?

Haha yeah same here bro.
Hope someone can enlighten us about how they upgraded their spl.
All I know is that its short for "splash image" and has something to do with the boot up process. My dad is a programer (during a coversation about android and linux) explained the SPL to me during Fourth of July but I was a little too drunk to care and pay attention.
well actually SPL stands for Second Program Loader. That much i know for sure. I also know that its the equivalent of a bootloader. what i DONT know and neither does anyone else by the looks of it (lol), is what the difference is between a perfect SPL and a Danger SPL, and how to go about flashing a danger SPL for mytouch 3g? and which danger SPL is the best?

Some people can be d!cks in this forum. Your steps are right from all that I know. Changing your SPL is an at your own risk sort of venture, though. Haven't even had the balls to do it myself yet. But, first, do try to use the search function in these forums. Pretty new myself but have good luck finding the resources I need through search. Lastly, here are a couple of links that have helped my in regard to SPL research. The first is more general and worth reading through the comments. The second one specifically relates to you...

your google-fu is weak old man!!
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking#sec01
"Perfect" SPL Revisions (that prevent us hacking)
Currently HBOOT-1.33.0006 and HBOOT-1.33.0010 are the known 'Perfect SPL' revisions on the Sapphire handsets that we know of.
It is not possible to fastboot a ROM using these and you need to wait until someone has hacked it.
Edit (12 Aug 2009) : Now you can! Refer to How-To - Fix that perfected SPL - Root the T-Mobile myTouch 3G
So what is an SPL anyway? What does it do?
The SPL, or Second Program Loader, is essentially the Android bootloader. It's job is more than just loading the Android OS - it also offers several other boot options, including Recovery mode, Fastboot, and HBOOT modes, and ultimately it's the SPL that allows manipulation of the flash nand on your device. Part of the SPL's job is to ensure that the data flashed to the device is correct. Most of the current shipping SPLs (apart from the "Perfect SPL's) let us flash a complete ROM image, but don't let us flash a recovery rom or boot image as it checks the verification signature. Haykuro has modified the SPL's available to remove this check and this is what the Engineering SPL's available offer. As the SPL is so crucial to the handset though, you have to be very careful when flashing it as if it's updated incorrectly then you may be incapable of restoring it without specialised hardware and knowledge. You essentially have a very expensive brick

Off topic, but thanks for posting. I wish more people were this patience and helpful. Kudos. Especially on the comedy inoffensive flame.
ive already seen that article, but it still does not explain what i want to know. I already know what an SPL does, but what does a Danger SPL do that my perfect SPL cant. is it worth flashing my SPL? which one should i flash and how? I cant find answers to these questions.
ok ive just foudn a bit of info saying that a danger SPL allows you to flash hero ROMS onto your mytouch.. but WTF??? Ive already flashed 2 different Hero ROMS onto my mytouch with no problems and I have a Perfect SPL. the only reason i didnt keep em was cause the device was slow! So wtf is going on with my phone? what am I missing here rofl
The "Danger" (or "Death") SPL is Haykuro's 1.33.2005 and there is only one. It changed the nand partitions sizes (or sth like that) on the G1 and that was why it is required to run Hero ROMs on it. It's not required to run Hero ROMs on the Magic though. What you're talking about are "Engineering" SPLs and the main difference with stock SPL is that, AFAIK, they bypass security checks to allow the flashing of unsigned update packages. Also, I think only Engineering and non-perfected SPLs allow the use of the fastboot protocol, the possibility to flash recovery images directly and the use of Nandroid to make backups.
To me it's all about unlocking everything but I could have lived with my stock non-perfected SPL as I could already do everything I wanted.
Signature checking is not necessary a bad thing. Perfected SPL is a different story as it really reduces you possibilities but I know there are workarounds.

Very informative. I was able to perform a Nandroid backup successfully while still on the "perfected SPL" so what's up with that? I guest I'll just stick with my perfected stock SPL for now, until I find a really great rom I want to flash but requires a non-perfected/eng spl.

That's why I said "I think"... fortunately I've never had a perfected SPL and I can only repeat what others have been saying about it. Can you restore the backup too?
As you'd already noticed, information on the subject is quite vague but you are right anyway, the only reason to change SPL should be if the ROM you want to install requires it ;-)
Okay, I have a Mytouch 1.2 and I understand this process, but I have no idea which SPL to flash, can anybody with a Mytouch 1.2/LE help?
Splash and bootscreen
I think for all my touch that's the same, you simply need an eng engineering spl (so you can remote fastboot and flash from your pc).
To safely flash an engineering spl there's a pretty good thread started by lbcoder in the g1 forum, you should chheck it.
Then there's 2 things, the link you posted from unlocker is a method to change the splash screen (the one with your carrier logo).
To create a proper splash screen image use the enclosed soft.
or this http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/12/quick-and-dirty-converter-tool-to.html
Then if you want to change the bootscreen (the second one, usually android) you need to change:
* the mask and shine pics in
/system/framework/framework-res.apk/assets/images
if your rom is donut based
*or simply change the gif animation in
/system/media/bootanimation.zip
if your rom is eclair based.
engenering spl
What I remember about the post I mentioned.
Basically to safely flash an engineering spl you need to flash the one matching your stock one (e.g. 1.33.2005 for 1.33.0005) and then if you wanna change to a different engineering spl (not matching your radio ... ...) you must flash it via fastboot otherwise good chance to brick.
Anyhow, you should make sure to well check all of it first
Okay, I tried the Engineering 2010 SPL, but then my phone had no audio for music or phone calls, is there another SPL I should try?
Hey after a quick look here, I think there's still no engeenering spl matching yours. So you should maybe go back to regular one.
Did you try to flash the splash screen even before changing the spl. Your stock spl might allow it.

NOOOOO dont go messing with spl/ radios. You will brick. Right now, we dont know what does what with what. I know it sux, I lost the fender splash screem that I will probably never get back. But doing this is still not safe yet.
Just give it a bit of time till we can get whats safe and whats not straightened out. To many people have bricked these phones since release not knowing how new of a piece of hardware it actually is.
Its your phone, do what you want... but its not worth the risks

Recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G,it might sound crazy, but it works like a charm.
And this is what I tried and what I got.
First I did the SPL downgrade to Engineering 2010 SPL,as stated no audio for music or phone calls. So after this update my sapphire became a PVT 32B with 2010 SPL.
This is what I did to get the sound back and the 1.33.0013 SPL.
Code:
fastboot flash hboot hboot_7201A_1.33.0013G_091021.nb0
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img
I uploaded the hboot_7201A_1.33.0013G_091021.nb0
After this I rebooted, the boot image remained there and the audio problems were gone, besides this the device is back to:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0013 (SAPP31000)
So now I have all the goodies from before, the mytouch boot image and the Android blue letters.I did neither have to use my nandroid backup nor update the radio.
I hope the explanation is not really complicated, but english is not my 1st language.
If you have questions just ask.
u know I thought about this before I even rooted... so since I have a 1.2 when I was re flashing. the stock radio, stock spl and amen ras recovery.. I also flashed the mytouch original splash screen... I think this should be mention to new people rooting this device so that they don't run in to the issue later riskin bricking their phone trying to get it back

Came across this and started reading but didnt get to last page so sorry if its an old post and im bringing it back from the dead... I noticed someone said something about bricking the phone so im either lucky or it doesnt brick the phone... Short background on what i did...
I had a g1, digitizer started doing what it wants and not what my finger did so i bought a used mytouch. great except i had cyanogen froyo 2.2 on my g1 so i miss it lol i did everything through theUnlockr.com made the gold card, installed the sdk crap, got the rom the instructions said to use first which was the cyanogen 2.1 rom... well when i did all this i lost the original Mytouch start up it now said HTC Magic or Dream cant remember i just know it said HTC then something and it was black screen... No no... so i again found on the Unlockr site how to change the splash screen "http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-change-your-splash-screen/" Mind you the Engineering spl sais 2010 i had 2013 on my phone so i bascily downgraded i guess? once i did that i lost audio through the earpeace.... but i got the mytouch splash screen again... so i then reflashed the spl back to the one i used when rooting the phone but the mytouch splash screen stayed... Sooo not sure if this helps in anyway but just sharing what happend to me in hopes it answers your question .....
here is the deal, we don't run an eng SPL. So we don't have the ability to flash from fastboot. I do agree with ceas909, flashing the splash (or any custom splash) should be stated in the rooting guide.
After that, you need to do redo the rooting process with a goldcard to get the ENG SPL temp on the phone to flash custom splash, then flash back to stock SPL.
Appaantly to downgrade to 1.5 on my vodafone uk htc magic, because its not a perfect SPL, i have to create a goldcard, now, is there anyway to root my phone easier than creating a goldcard? (too complicated for me), when i try to do the sappimg.nbh file, i get incorrect id, i followed every guide

can i root easier?
What do you aim to do?
If you wish to flash a new rom then you dont need to root first because with that SPL you can boot the phone into fastboot and use the usb fastboot facility to remote boot the recovery tool via the android sdk. Then use nandroid to backup your existing rom, wipe the phone and flash a new img. (i believe the new rom has to be signed as s=on)
I have done the exact same this week as my first attempt to flash my uk voda magic. I must have read every article I found and discovered that so many are misleading/confusing for the owners of a non-perfect spl 32b. I used this method to go straight from an unrooted magic running donut to the new cyanogen 5 running eclair using Amon's recovery tool 1.6.2g, my phone details are exactly the same as yours.
One thing I have been wondering is if I should flash the recovery program onto my phone? Is it safe to rely on usb fastbooting the program?
see the htc_sapphire_hacking wiki for more info.
thanks mate, i didnt need to downgrade my phone as i have been trying to do for weeks, now proud owner of rooted htc magic with cynaogens new 2.1 rom
