A Keyboard that has all these requirements: - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Ok i know many people are in love with the hero keyboard but the problem is the lag. i stopped using it because when i type in landscape mode it just becomes so laggy, it would type and it would take forever for it to catch up. but the thing i love about it, i can use the trackball to select the correct words. there are some "optimized" HTC_IME's that disable the autocorrection but thats stupid, i need the autocorrection. i tried the default keyboard and i actually like it, BUT i cant select words with the trackball, that is important to me. so what keyboard does these things:
1) no lag
2) has autocorrection
3) able to select words with the trackball
4) saving words you enter into dictionary and suggest it first
So basically a "betterkeyboard" with trackball selection.
ive tried betterkeyboard, but it doesnt give me the option to select the autocorrect word, or scroll through them with my trackball, i gotta use my finger and its uncomfortable like that. can anyone recommend an alternative if there even is one? thanks!

HTC default Keyboard on Cyanogen ROM
Hello I’m using the MoDaCo-sapphire Hero image on the MT3G, and it is painfully slow. I was wondering if the default HTC keyboard is usable on any of the Cyanogen builds. If so can anyone point me in the right direction to add it to Cyanogen 4.2.5? I love using any variant of the Hero builds, but they lag, are resource hogs, and my battery becomes mush. I just love their default keyboard which is easier to use, and it should be even faster on a lean ROM such as Cyanogens. Thanks.

Here's the link to the keyboard. Just download it and install it using an app installer. The keyboard is pretty fast, but as the OP said, it lags, but not as bad as hero roms.

yes this is the same one that is giving me issues. man i really wish the betterkeyboards had a scroll selection. any other opinions before i call it quits?
perhaps someone can explain to me how i can install an HTC_IME that has been optimized by eugene. its in his latest ROM, i successfully extracted it but it wont install. im sure i can do it through adb, anyone have the codes?

a suggestion...
I found another one recently which I believe is better with less bugs than betterkeyboard... its called "asoftkeyboard" its free on market... and its got almost every language support...
betterkeyboard started giving me bugs depending on roms and stuff so i tried this.. and absolutely love it... keys are kind of small though...
but try that guys...

Just thought I'd ask - which rom are you using? I don't get any lag with HTC IME.

You should really check out TouchPal from Cooltek. It has all functions you requested.

And how did you accomplish that, Chuco? Please enlighten us!
you download appmanager, download the htc_ime.apk from the forum put it on your sd card and use appmanager to install from sd....
I got this working using the files and the instructions on Haykuro's blog:
http://haykuro.theiphoneproject.org/?p=213
After the phone restarts, open messages, go to a new message, do a long press in the text input box and when the option appears select 'input method' - 'touch input'
Massive improvement on the stock Android keyboard!
NICE! This is freaking sweet... it'll definitely make waiting for root more bearable since this was one of the apk that i wanted in the myTouch
Thank you for the heads up!
+1.. Just did this on my G1 & will be doing it on my mytouch monday before anything else.. I love the compact qwerty..
How is this compared to better keyboard or touchpal??
cant wait until i get my touch, in for when it finally arrives.

Well HTC_IME has 3 types of keyboards... regular QWERTY, Compact QWERTY (Like the ones on the BB Pearl) and t9.
I have some screen shot of it on my G1 here
As far as better keyboard, its still the same keyboard found in cupcake just skinned and its similar to touchpal but touchpal has a ton more options. hope this helps
thank you that did help.
i have to disagree i find that the htc keyboard to find my words way better than the stock android i type faster on this than on my blackberry

Is it not letting you install? Giving you an error? Are you changing the touch input after you install it?
it says its nstalled but when i try to change the touch input there isnt another option other than "android keyboard"

Damn you for getting your myTouch early gotta wait 1 more week but when your on your sms screen try holding down the text input area, click on "Input Method" and you should have 2 options "Android keyboard" and "Touch Input" click on Touch Input and you should have HTC_IME instead. I know I don't have my myTouch yet but I think that how it is if you have installed.
Did you try rebooting?
On another note: Anybody notice that the htc keyboard is a resource hog? Can't use while I'm listening to music.
Android double post ftw.
It posts twice, because it's twice as nice. :-D

Sense UI elements on AOSP?

I am running darchstars AOSP2.1 ROM and I have two questions for any enterprising devs, if they have time or can tell me the way to do it.
1)I went from using the stock keyboard to betterkeyboard back to the HTC keyboard. In better keyboard you can adjust the vibration for each keypress to be short, is there a way I can change the HTC keyboard to that as well? I'm not afraid of the command line, but I have no idea where I might start with this.
2)I much prefer the HTC dialer app, with the smart dialing. Is there a way to use that instead of the stock android dialer, or a different dialer replacement that has similar functionality?
Thanks again for any responses!

Basically what you want is Gumbo Bare on 2.1?
I'm also interested in this. I'm playing around with an Odroid running AOSP 2.1, I've gotten google bits to run on it, I found a package that includes the framework etc, and works exactly like it should. Very easy to install.
Finding a similar package for senceUI would be of interest to me.
The ability to take a vanillia AOSP add any flavor I want, google bits, SenceUI, Moto Blur... or anything else would be very nice IMO. Instead of the current... I like this rom because it has.... but I wish it had..... Put it together like lego blocks.

Well, not really. I'm looking for a way to edit the HTC keyboard haptic feedback if there's a way, and to find a replacement dialer for any AOSP ROM since I personally don't like the stock one. The keyboard is a little more important to me, but I was just hoping somebody might know what I'm looking for.

Look through the 2.1 compatible MetaMorph themes.

Keyboard is not good. Missing letters some time.

I got my X10 2 days ago. Previously i was using iPhone. Everybody know iPhone user interface is simply awesome. I like X10 as well. the issue currently i am facing is that when i type my messages some times i missed the letter and i have to press the letter again. specially letter 'a'. I am using android keyboard. Is this issue is because of keyboard or it's software issue. i know touch is perfect because i can see zoom in image of the letter. I also tried to disable sound, vibrate, dictionary etc. but no luck so far.
though in landscape it works fine.
Can anybody guide me how can i solve this issue?
Thanks,
I had the same problem with both the Android and standard keyboards.
The only way I fixed it was to install the HTC Keyboard. Works fantastic and it has a calibration tool so you can make it even more accurate than it already is.
Search for HTC X10 keyboard on google, I think there is a tutorial on esato or se-nse.
I'm afraid that this has become old news when it comes to the x10.
At the moment I can only suggest a workaround or two.
I have installed the HTC keyboard which I find very accurate. It can also be customized to allow the volume controls to control the cursor whilst typing.
Personally I find this to be the best solution.
Better keyboard is a paid app that can be downloaded from the market and offers another good solution.
I have heard in posts that swipe keyboard is another good alternative.
Finally I have heard that upgrading to the latest firmware available may help things. I debranded and upgraded to 1.6 but I still used the HTC as its familiar.
Another option is the Smart Keyboard Pro
yo try the app called shape writer. Its simply amazing, u will love it
HTC keyboard.. easy & free
Smart Keyborad PRO & Swype are also good options
actually the true problem to this is the sluggishness of the touchscreen which you'll experience in most other applications as well. the only solution is to type slower since no matter which keyboard you try you will always experience some random unset delay after each key before it actually registers on the screen. that by itself will hinder your ability to type fast and will introduce additional typos.
If you use SlideIT keyboard then you won't have any problems with sluggishness. ( which I've not experienced anyway). Its not as attractive add swype, but I find it much more accurate.

Sent from my X10i,
using SlideIT keyboard.
You can have landscape size buttons in portrait with 'Big Buttons' keyboard from the market, it takes a chunk of screen but your typing will be perfect
Thanks a lot, i just trid "big buttons", love it, the best one for people like me who are not very handy with their fingers

make sure you correctly enable the htc_ime mod keyboard from the list of keyboards in the input method options.
to bring up the input method option, when your vr keyboard is visible, long press any area where you input text and select htc ime mod.
If the htc keyboard is not available from that list, go to settings, locale and text and tick htc keyboard.

It does not matter if you type slow. it's some other issue i can't figure out the reason maybe SE know it well. you can saw a issue which can't be replicated
I guess the problems of typing are related also to the protective screen

i don't think so. because other keyboards are working fine. the problem is with the firmware
I'm using shapewriter keyboard (free on the android market) ... perfect alternative to the swype keyboard & similar as well for those who arent able to get their hands on swype due to its limited beta release
Try ThickButton - it's pretty awesome - predicts what you want to type, and expands the size of appropriate keys, making the others smaller... You can also select how much they'll expand by (esp if you have really fat fingers, or type with your toes.)

2.1 Keyboard on 2.2

Hi..
I updated to Froyo when the stock, rooted edition was out.. Modded it a bit and added the Circle battery mod.
I have been using the 2.2 Sense keyboard for a while to sms, browsing and so on, but since I use phone-keyboard and not QWERTY or compact QWERTY, I'm missing the old keyboard where I didn't have to press and hold "1" to make "?" and "!"..
Right right, the new keyboard is nice.. But come on, how often do you actually have to change the language of the keyboard?
As I'm from Denmark I can only speak on my own behalf: "Not that often".
Is there a way that I can get the 2.1 sense keyboard back?
If yes, how, and can you guys provide the file for me?
Thanks in advance
Yes this is very easy to do but I dont have the files at hand right now so hopefully someone else can post it for you, if not i will post 2moro
Why dont you just flash HTC_IME_MOD?? Its much better than 2.1 keyboard

Wow, sweet..
I have only seen screenshots of Compact QWERTY and QWERTY, that's why I just thought "well, doesn't support normal phone-mode then"..
Just installed it, and it is sweet, thx man!
I too have had the same annoyances with the 2.2 keyboard.
I just use the phone keypad style one and the thing that was really really bugging me was the exclamation mark had moved and having to press the little arrow then select it.
Just installed the htc_ime mod and it's great. Some nice settings too which make it a bit more customizable.

[Q] Android 2.3 keyboard

Do somebody successful install android 2.3 keyboard (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9634274) on htc legend?

It is, but not by much. For example when you hold period you get a popup with all the commonly used punctuation marks. Same with the smilies, and with the top row of letters (showing numbers and accents, much like in the standard cm keyboard).
I actually like the smaller key size, as I can see more other stuff on screen when I type. I also somehow find it works just as accurate, even though it's harder to see where my finger actually lands.
The biggest thing is it looks a lot nicer, with the suggestions in a black background box in orange letters...nice!
Only thing is I have to teach it all my (swear) words again >_<

HTC_ime also does this. From what I read the only added feature seems to be multitouch (which I'd find awesome), but then I'd lose gestures.

The HTC_ime mod has gestures (and a number of other extra features). It's a lot better than the stock keyboard imo.
