Redirect Documents etc to storage card - HD2 General

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere. I couldn't see it anywhere.
Does anyone know the best way to redirect the Documents, Pictures on phone etc to the storage card?
Can it be done within Advanced Config. And if so, does anyone know if it sticks?

you can tell the camera to store the photos on the storage card. I haven't figured out more yet, would like to know how to change the default folder for bt recieved files or opera downloads e.g.

Pictures to storage card
Within the camera/settings, there is a menu with 6 options. Pressing the storage icon toggles between saving to card, and device.
Other apps let you choose where to store file. Notes & email.
You can store all your audio and image files on the SD and sense will find them.
Many apps can be installed on the sd.
TomTom & Copilot install maps on the sd.
At 100meg they are too big for most mobile memories, though the HD2 could handle it.

SD card primer, anyone?

Hello,
I just discovered I'm even more of a ignorant farmgirl than I thought... this time it's the MiniSD card I don't know anything about.
I mean: of course you plug it in and you browse to it to add/move/remove files... but it would seem that's not enough. So, can anyone point me to a SD-on-Wiz Faq, please?
A few things I'm looking into:
- How do you get the Wiz to automatically look among SD card-based files from an app? (i.e. "Open" from Word looks into the card first)
- How do you get the camera to save pictures directly onto the SD card, so as not to waste precious device-based memory?
- What are the actual differences between installing apps onto a SD card compared to the device memory? I noticed some apps seem to behave differently according to where they are placed.
- Is there any way to create a card-based auto-multi-installer to do all the dirty work of reinstalling apps automatically after a hard reset?
I'm sure I left out several other interesting and useful things...
Thanks in advance for your contributions!
there´s some reg tweaks you can do so the wizard will store stuff on the sd-card and not in main memorey (i. e. IE cache files, Camera pics, etc.)
just search the forum you´ll find some stuff there.
For the difference between SD-Card and main storage installation. i have no idea. haven´t noticed any change in my apps. maybe just in speed of loading apps. but that´s all i noticed.
for doing backup of your apps. a lot of programms you intall on your sd card don´t need to be reinstalled after a hard reset. just need to put the shortcuts and links back in the folders.
hope i could help.
greets Freez
Making the camera save pictures to the SD card can be done by changing the settings in the camera app under options.
There is no way to automatically have all apps look on the SD card first, every app needs a change in their settings or in the registry to accomplish that.
Installing apps on the SD card has pros and cons. The pros are of course that your storage space on the device (in the ROM) gets used up less, so you can install more apps on your device. It is however not necessary to leave it as empty as possible as it was in WM 2003 SE. In WM 2003 SE (on for instance the Magician) apps were installed in RAM and the more you installed on the device, the more RAM was used up and the less RAM there was available for running apps, resulting in a slow down of the device. Furthermore running out of battery power would result in the device turning off, emptying the RAM and lossing all data and installed apps. In WM5 this is different. Since ROM is used for storage and RAM for executing only, you can fill your ROM to the max without slowing down the device. Furthermore an empty battery will mean no data loss. Concluding, there is no necessity to install as much as possible to the SD card and leave your ROM space empty.
The cons of installing to your SD card are that some apps (e.g. today-plug-ins) don't like being installed on SD card. For today plug-ins this has to do with the start-up process of the Wizard. After turing the device on or waking it from sleep, the device will first load the apps and then initialize the SD card. The device will try to load the apps on the today screen (the plug-ins that is) that are stored on the SD before the SD slot is initialized and the apps cannot be found by the device, creating glitches and problems.
Another con for me is that I like to switch between my SD with TomTom navigation maps and my SD with my mp3/movie collection. If I install most apps to SD, this means that I will have to change my SD again if during a movie or MP3 I want to use one of these apps quickly.
However, if you use only one SD for installing and not much else, this problem does of course not exist.
If your storage in ROM is not full, there is no reason to install aps to SD.
Thak you for the info so far!
Koskie: paint me 'tard... I never even saw the camera Options menu until you mentioned it...
I am about to start getting some cards and here is what I was thinking...
1. a 512 or 128MB card for everyday use. Store IE cache, ringtones, pictures, and some programs (solitaire, puzzles, monopoly etc).
2. A series of 2GB cards for music, movies and TV content when I travel. I was planing on installing TCPMP on each one to avaoid putting that in my device memory.
As far as restoring after flashing or a hard reset, I currently keep a copy of all programs, ringtones, pim backups etc on my home computer. It is organized by file type, utils, games, rings etc. so when I flash I just go through again and reinstall one by one. I've found this is easier than figuring out where to download everything all over again.
@bubism: no problem, took me a while to figure it out too, that option is well-hidden!
@dcdivenut: Good plan. Those small size cards are really cheap. Why don't you install TCPMP on your device memory? It is not too big. Or have you crammed your mem so full that you have no more place for it.
I also have all apps I ever installed still on my desktop, including a list with all the reg edits I did and all apps I have currently installed with a short explanation for most apps and installation instructions when a standard install is not good enough (e.g. TomTom 5.21)
In case a hard reset is needed,I just grab the list and install all apps again, then do all the regedits. Still a lot of work, but quicker than having to search all apps and edits online. I recommend this approach to everyone.
Hey Koskie:
Can you post that list and what to do? I have a new 8125 and miniSD card and have no idea what to use the card for. I won't be putting music, pictures or videos on it since it is a work phone.
Ski
@ Skijackz: I use my SD card for music, TomTom 5.21 maps and video's only, all my apps are installed in main (=device) mem. I have approx. 16 MB free of Storage mem. If you have no use for your SD card and your storage mem is sufficient to store your apps, you can take it out and replace it with the plastic dummy that came with it. In that way your card slot is protected against dust and dirt, but the SD card will not use any power, thereby lengthening your uptime. If you use your device for navigation, you have to use the card to store the maps on it, since they are too big for your device mem.
The list I made is partly in Dutch, especially the notes, so it might not be very useful to you. Furthermore the list is a mess, since it works through my personal filing system (copy and paste wherever my cursor happens to rest). It is a mostly chronological list, I mostly added everything I found at the end. I'll attach it anyway, perhaps you'll find it useful. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask them here or through PM.
Thanks a lot for the tip on storing pics to the storage card!!! That's a real find! ....and much appreciated!!
This place is the BEST :!: :!:
Thanks Koskie!! This is a real help.

Where is all of my storage going?!?!?

I went to take a picture today with my 8125 and it said i only had 22 remaining.... i swear a few days ago it was well over 50. Im assuming the pictures get saved to the "storage" memory by default so i checked my memory and it says i only have 6.5 mb left. I have no clue how this is possible since i dont even have a lot of programs installed. here is what i have installed 3rd party:
tonaya weather to go
magic button
agile messenger
TCPMP with two plugins
TomTom w/ one voice
Not sure what this one is but : FdcSoft PPCContacts manager. (let mek now if i can delete this one)
along with that i have 13 full res pictures and the stock ones it came with. Im running aku2.3 if that has any affect...
like i said i just dont understand how i am using almost 40mb out of 47. and im not quite sure what program memory consists of but that is almost have full at around 22mb of 44mb. Thanks for the help

even if I do that it seems like it would only free up a few mb`s if that....it seems like something else is hogging my space.
DO not assume anything. Usually by default, items are stored to your Main Memory. Go in and check all your programs, change the default "save to" and clear cache and temp files.

I can't say I understand...could you please explain a little more please. do all of the new programs I install go to storage memory or program? I'm just confsed on what to clear out
well i posted this topic earlier today and i said that i had around 6mb of free storage space. I just went to install opera and it said my storage space was down to 2mb! I havnt installed anything or taken any pictures since i started this topic and i lost 4mb of storage already. How is this happening?? I did 2 soft resets and my storage memory never went up. Im really confused as to how this thing is eating my storage memory without me doing anything. I had to delete agile messenger just to gain some space! Please help with this
Storage mem is where you install apps and where apps by default save their files (pictures, video's, temp files, IE cache, Word documents etc). When you use your cam to take pictures, they come in the mydocuments folder on your storage mem. To change this, you have to go into the options of all apps you use and change the default storage location for the files to SD card. For instance: in the camera app, go to the settings, options, general and change the location to storage card.
With file explorer you can search your device for these files, perhaps your pics are taking up so much space? You can also use the built-in search function in start-programs and search for files larger than 64 kb, that should show you the culprits.
Program Mem under WM5 is only used to run apps, not to store them. It wll gradually fill up since not all apps are properly closed, even with task managers. Soft-resetting will empty your program mem from these apps and free up your RAM.
Storage mem is ROM mem and will not be emptied by a soft reset. There must be a lot of files in your storage mem that take up the place, so find out which apps do that. perhaps you have been surfing and there are large temp files from IE on your device?
Thanks for the advice, that is pretty much the answer i needed. One more question though, where should i regularly look to delete files? I will change my picture save location to my stroage card but what are some places i should always be clearing out? Thanks
Edit: I think i may have found the main culprit....one i forgot i transfered a 6mb song for a ring tone and second i went to windows=profiles=guest=temp internet files and cleared all that out and now im up to 22mb of free storgage! Is there any way i can not have it save the temp files or something? Also, in the windows folder it has all of my sounds/ring tones and those same files are also in the Rings folder. It wont let me delete them out of the windows folder and i dont want to delete them out of the rings folder and have it not work. What should i do?
You can run the search function in start-programs regularly if your storage mem goes down to fast for your liking to see large files that hog your storage mem (like files and frames in your temp folder that you downloaded or some app dumped there).
To clear out the IE cache, start IE, tap menu-options-memory and click the buttons delete history and delete files.
I have no idea which other locations to check, I only applied the camera option and clear out the IE cache once in a while (f I remember to). I have lots of apps installed in storage mem and still approx 15 MB free, so freeing up space has never been an issue for me.
good luck with it!
PS judging on your installed apps, I have no idea what can hog your storage so extremely. Perhaps the weather app is saving all downloaded data somewhere on main? I presume that your TT maps are on storage card (they are too big for intenal strage anyway)
PPS AFAIK PPCContact Manager helps you to select all your contacts in one go, for batch sending them trough BT to e.g. a BT carkit or other operations you want to carry out involving all contacts instead of one by one. tap and hold on a contact and you should see "Select all contacts" in the pop-up menu.
youve been a huge help koksie, i appreciate it. Any idea why my soungs are stored in the windows folder and under windows/rings? It wont let me delete them out of the windows folder but it will out of the rings folder. The only reason i dont want to delete them out of the rings folder is i feel if i do then i wont be able to select the deleted ones as ring tones even though they are still in my windows folder. Maybe i should just leave this as is...
Have a search for a free utility called Where Is My RAM? WIMR. As I can best recall this will run on WM5 too and will list your files in order of size. A real boon!
There's a program called Registry Wizard made by one of the geniuses here that will set your IE temp/cache files to be saved to the storage card. I use it and love it! It also has a lot of other tweaks for performance, annoyances, etc....
Do a search for it.
Hell....it's still on the first page when I do a search for "8125"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39725&highlight=8125
I store all my songs on the storage mini SD card. Only my ringtones and mp3 I want to set as ringtone are in the windows/rings dir. All the songs I only use for listening are on my SD card. Use total Commander (freeware) to delete all the stuff you don't need in the windows dir. This app has more possibilities than the standard file explorer. Just save your songs you need for ringtones on your main mem (windows/rings) and move all other songs to your SD card. Sorry, kinda wasted right now, just got home at 4.30 AM after "some" drinking, so I might not make much sense, but I might be more clear later on after some sleep...

memory stick folders?

Hi,
I'm eagerly waiting for my X1 (2 month wait ) and I have already bought a 16 gig sd card to put music and bits on.
So I can transfer my music over can someone tell me the folder names/structure for the memory card so I can create the right folders and not waste my time.
Thanks
You can create whatever folders you like. Everything is up to the user.
I would advise to make a Program Files folder though. Although the first app you install on the storage card should create one for itself, you never know.
I suggest you make the following folders:
-Music: For your MP3s and stuff
-Pictures: For your pitures. Note that the camera will put the pictures in /DCIM/100XPRIA. Haven't found a way to remap this... (That actually works).
-Software: CAB-Files for all your software so you have them whenever you need them. Make sure you get CAB-Files of the software you're using, not ActiveSync installers that have to be run on your PC.
-Notes: It is intelligent to have Windows store your Notes on the MicroSD card. You have to make this setting manually.
-Movies: For your movies if you intend to watch them
More folders will be created automatically, such as the programs folder mentioned by orelsi, 2 folders for Windows Media Player and Inboxfolder (If you choose to store Emails on the storage card). Notice that if you plan to use a navigation software, it will most likely create a folder in the storage card root. Sometimes even multiple folders. I think TomTom quite sucks regarding this. So in order to keep your "real" files apart from any Settings/Navigation Maps/etc, you may want to create a folder named Files or something, that holds all of the folders in the list above. This makes administration of your files a lot easier but it can slow down access times because you always have to go to storage card, then choose the folder, then choose the category and then the file. Of course this depends on your setup. You can easily create a direct shortcut to that subfolder.
One more thing: Regularily check your MicroSD card with Windows for faults. I find there are problems with this quite often and you can lose data easily.
Cheers Guys

Moving Mail to Storage Card & Other Mysteries!

Has anyone successfully managed to move the Inbox to the Storage Card yet?
The usual registry hacks that have worked on several previous devices don't seem to be working on the HD2.
It is quite happy to let me move attachments to the Storage Card through Inbox-Options but as soon as I hack the registry to set 'PropertyPath' to move the Inbox and reboot, I end up with a folder in main memory called 'Storage Card' and the actual Storage Card renamed 'Storage Card2'.
If memory serves, this can happen where the card is slow to be mounted, but I'm puzzled why it will happily send attachments to the card and then throw a hissy fit when I ask it to do the same with mail.
Was the issue of the speed of mounting the card ever solved anywhere else? Can't find it if it was!
Any help gratefully received.
Bump...
Has anyone tried moving their Inbox to the Storage Card? Someone must have, surely?
A simple yes it works/no it doesn't would be very helpful - at least I'd know whether it was worth trying to find a solution
Thanks in anticipation
Still keen to know whether anyone has successfully managed to move their mail store to the Storage Card.
Also, has anyone managed to turn off autolock? I don't want to have to enter a pin every time my device wakes. I have tried tweaks and reg hacks and neither seems to give me the behaviour I want/expect
I appreciate that there are differences between Manila and Sense, but surely the underlying registry entries can't be that different? Many of the expected keys exist but they are just ignored by the device - odd.
Or is it just me...?
unfortunately you are right.
I experience the same issues in trying to redirect pictures I shoot to storage card\My Documents\My Pictures.
Like you say there appear to be some differences here and there.
I'm looking but I hope somebody with some more knowledge finds it fast

Hi Gustopher, how and where did you do that? I am unable to find where to tell the HD2 to put attachments on the Storage Card even after days of searching for it, resulting in less and less storage on the device, even when all mail and messages have been removed.
Thanks in advance.
Crazy...
Edit : O.k. just found it . . . . . . duh, what a good night rest can do for ya.
Another week's worth of XDA brains on this since first posting, so worth a revist:
Has anyone managed to get their mail onto the storage card?
The few who have responded so far seem to see the same issues as I did, but is this the case across the board?
If there is indeed a problem, does anyone have any bright ideas how we can fix this?
(Or is everyone too busy saying how much they love/hate the HD2 and how they are going to shag it/return it??)
Hi
Given the small amount of storage memory this is an important issue. I haven't tried it but was going to use Sktools to do it. Will try later. Hope it an be resolved.
Paul
I am pretty sure you won't get any joy through SKTools - I have already responded to someone else who'd tried it and wondered why they had a renamed Storage Card.
I just had a go through Memmaid - I was also looking at the possibility of changing some startup items to give the card a chance to load - but wound up having to hard reset.
It's a bugger, to be sure. I am increasingly convinced that the card is slow to load, but what to do about it...?
I would also like some assistance in getting this resolved. Has anyone been successful here??
here...
Find the Email icon in the main start menu (or it may be in a subfolder depending on your rom). Open it and the 'select an account' screen will open. Hit MENU, OPTIONS, go across to the STORAGE tab and tick the box that says 'When available, use the storage card to store attachments.'
After a loading icon all attachments existing and in the future will be stored on the card. You will notice an increase in available memory on the device immediately.
I assume this is what you meant, if not I don't know the solution!
i have an idea to a solution

This isn't the preferred method because it creates a folder with an encrypted name. Also, it does not move the mail, just the attachments. But, it's better than nothing.
Generally, I want to save the mail and attachment in my desired path on the SD card.
As the OP stated, all the old methods don't work.
I addressed this problem in this thread, due to the order the hardware starts up after a reset i doubt you will find a solution to this problem without rewriting the email software not to start untill the SDcard has been powered/detected

[Q] external sd card general questions

hi, i've just got my iconia and I am also new on the Android world. A couple of things I've noticed about the external SD card that maybe somebody could help me to understand.
1.- when I hook my tablet to my windows 7 laptop, I get to see the internal memory on the win explorer but not the external card, so is this normal or do I have to look for more updated drivers on my PC?
2.- with the external SD card on I get to see my files on an android file manager and I get to open any file individually by getting the "select app for opening this file", but this is time consuming so I am wondering if my stock lumiread, gallery, multimedia player have the current limitation of only reading the content from the internal memory. If so, what free alternatives do I have to replace stock apps?
A couple of answers
First, if you install File Manager HD, you won't need to tether your Iconia to your laptop any more. In the app, open the 'menu' and touch 'LAN Connections'. Your Windows PC will show up as an IP address. Make sure to change the IP Address to a computer name (long press, rename) so that next time File Manager won't have to search for it every time. You will be able to transfer anything on the tab to the 'Public' folder on the PC, and vice versa. Depending on what folders are shared on the PC, you will be able to access more on the PC.
I keep my music on my external SD card in a folder named 'My Music'. The stock music/multimedia players found them with no problem.
I haven't tried moving any books for Lumiread to the external SD card, so all I can suggest is to look at the file structure and duplicate it on the ext SD card, copy a book into it (a new one, or move an existing one) and see if it finds it. I don't see anything within the app to set search/storage directories, but maybe it will scan everything like the music apps do.
Have fun with you new Tab. The more you play with it the more you will understand Honeycomb and it won't seem so foreign to you. It does pretty much everything every other OS does, just a little different way.
Kp
Thanks Ken, I downloaded FMHD and will try it soon. I also though about reproducing the lumiread folder on the ext sd card but no luck, so probably a future update on the app will fix that. I tried this as well copying the pictures folder (and also renaming it as 'My Pictures') but the stock gallery just won't see the image files, is there any chance you could see if you get the same results? I have not tried yet on the music stock app. Again, thanks for your help, it is great to find nice people on the web with similar tech passions as I do
Hello Ken, like that app. Wondering if it would be an easy way to tether to my HTC Evo? Thanks in advance for you thoughts.

I use Quickpic from the Market (free) since it lets you choose which drives/directories to scan.
Here is what you do.
1. Create the My Pics directory on the External SD card with File Manager HD, put a few pics in it.
2. After installing Quickpic, start the app. It will display everything it finds on the internal SD Card.
3. Touch the Menu button from the main screen.
4. Choose SETTINGS-INCLUDED FOLDERS-ADD
5. Tap the double dots at the top of the list, it will display all the memory devices attached.
6. Tap EXTERNAL_SD. All directories on the card will be displayed. Press OK.
Now press the 'back' button and you will see your pics that are anywhere on the External SD card.
All I did to get the A500 music player to find the music on the External SD card was run the NemoPlayer app and open the music. Once I did that the regular music app found them, too.
Have fun!

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think so. From what I have seen and heard so far it is only connecting to Windows shares. I don't have an Android phone to test with, so can't swear to it, but I know it doesn't see an iPhone, so likely won't see a Mac either.
Anyone else been able to connect to anything but a Windows share? Let us know if you have, and what app you used please.
