Marking email as read in HTC email reader - HD2 General

Hello,
First post here - what a great resource this is and what a great device the HD2 is. One small frustration is that when I read email in the HTC software then it isn't marked as read until I open it in the standard windows email viewer. Is there a way to make this happen?
Thanks,
James

Yeah this is annoying me too!

Alternatively - is there a way of configuring the HD2 so when the email icon is pressed then it launches the underlying Outlook tool rather than the HTC one. I another route to this end would be to create a shortcut to Outlook on the home page.
Thanks,
James

I dont use outlook to sync my Hd2. So it would be nice with something which resolved this...

Yeah, this bugs me too.
What's the point in HTC going to all those lengths to make a really nice email tab where you can read incoming messages without opening the outlook browser, and then not have a way of marking the messages as read.
It should either be an automatic thing, where viewing an email on the tab marks it as read, or there should be a "mark as read" option in the menu. (God forbid anyone wants a "delete" menu option too!)
A solution to this would be very welcome.

this was bugging me too - happily there is a simple solution which the clever folks here created
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=510621&highlight=mark+all+as+read
just installed it - i now have "mark all as read" as an option in the inbox menu... one of my HD2 niggles just vanished....
edit - just noticed this also adds a "delete all" function too.... with power comes great responsibility.... happily it does ask you to confirm before deleting your entire inbox...

this is a better link to the .cab which fixes it

Thank you!

Any way to sort contacts by first name?

I've got myself a new Vario, but I can't seem to get the contacts to sort by first name - is there any way to do this?
Sorry if this is a dumb question! I've been mucking about with it for ages!
Many thanks
Zakkz,
Welcome to the forum . Please read this introduction.
Here's a couple of links on your question.

yes it is possible,
even different ways to get this:
you can use a little freeware application 'File As First Last" that will be included in the default contacts applications. It allows you to save the contact by "firstname lastname" 'or even by company etc. The application can be found on pocketpcfreewares.com: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=828
you could also change the contact settings on your desktop...within the Outlook contact, you can change the setting 'save contact as', there you can chose to use "firstname lastname"
yet another way to solve this problem is to use another application for your contacts. Pocket Informant is really very good! there you can easily chose to sort the contacts by "firstname lastname"...you can also chose to see the contact pictures in the list of contacts, which is really great I think!
and you've got many many other options and settings to change the calendar/contacts/tasks views...also a really great search function within Pocket Informant...try it for yourself...

HTC 'Mark mail as read'...

Hi all,
I wondered if anyone had found the following problem rather irritating?
I have the HTC mail widget on my home screen which works great but I would like it to mark mail as read when it is viewed on there rather than having to open all mails individually. Is this possible, and if not is there another way to quickly mark multiple messages as read without deleting?
Cheers,
Michael

I started this thread a while ago: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567100
as far as I know there is still now option to mark all mail as read, so it was easier to switch gmail instead. I suggest you do the same as Gmail app is so much better.

Mail sends GMail messages twice

Has anyone else had an issue where mails sent from the HD2 via the standard mail app are appearing twice in conversations? If I reply to someone from the phone, they always get 2 copies, and both appear in the web UI for GMail.
Clarifications...
1) Using IMAP Gmail.
2) Running Dutty's HG 0.8
Guess its just me, then.

I noticed that also, but I don't know if I was under Dutty's rom or stock one (1.66 fixed stock one at the moment). Annoying indeed.
It's happening to me also, and I'm using Laurentius's WM6.5 ROM.
got the same probleme on my hd2
i use the official rom 1.66
I also confirm the problem. I'm also using an official ROM.
That's because in your email settings you've got the "save sent items" ticked - emails don't get sent twice but what happens is that they get synced twice (once from the "sent" folder on your phone and once from the "sent" items in Gmail) Just untick "save sent items" and they'll only show up once in your conversation - you can still see them by going to the [Google Mail] (click on the "+" to expand) / Sent Mail folder
I'm afraid that I cannot find this "save sent items" either under the web settings from my laptop or phone e-mail settings for gmail. Where exactly is that setting? Note that the gmail client of the HD2 uses IMAP (and not POP - it's disabled in gmail) for sending and receiving messages and I think that the setting of saving sent items doesn't apply on IMAP, or does it?
Can't remember where it is tbh, will have to go looking for it when I can! It's on the phone somewhere - I use gmail via IMAP and had the "double sent message" in the conversations too until I unticked the thing about 6 months ago
OK, thank you. Will continue looking for it. Will tell you if I find it, but until then, if you find it, please tell me.
ok found it from the inbox, go to Menu > Tools > Message tab and untick "Keep copies of sent items in Sent folder"
OK, found it. Had to press "More" first ot go to Inbox (phone was displaying received messages one by one before pressing it). Will test it. Again, thank you.
Sir you will be a DON if this works.
I have asked this problem to Google, HTC and Vodaphone and no-one has managed to give me an answer [some suggesting hard reset or send phone for repair!]
I found that when I do a "reply all" it was including my own email in the "To" field and when I delete this only 1 email would get to each recipient [note annecdotal discovery not rigorously tested!]

I'd like to point out that I'm a girl but erm thanks
I'm not sure we're having the same problem with wigwam12 (I don't recall my name included in any address - only two copies of the message shown in the web client - but my memory could have failed me), but mine is fixed! Only one copy of the e-mail now in web. Thank you!
I have the same "symptoms" ie people getting 2 copies of the email [and 2 shown in the web client].
I just pored over the possible reasons and noticed the inclusion of self to Send list - not sure if it was a factor or not.
Will test later to see if mine is fixed too

Isadora you are a Bella DONna!
This has fixed the double-email problem.
When HTC cheekily asked how they did at fixing the problem I pointed they didn't - you did
Wish I could find a way now to stop it adding my own address to the "to" field then doing a reply-all
Further Reading that clearly explains the Double Sent Message Issue with GMAIL.

Caution while using Menu > Tools > Options > Message tab and untick "Keep copies of sent items in Sent folder"
That is a universal rule and will apply to all your Email accounts. You can't assign this option specifically to any particular Email account. So if you happen to have other Email accounts for which you need to save a copy of Sent messages, it might be a problem, unless of course you are using a Sync based system like IMAP4 or ActiveSync, in which case you can select the Sent Items folder under MANAGE FOLDERS to be synced as well.
@Isadoa.. Nice catch. I've been using this thing for years and yet it slipped my mind somehow today.

HTC Email CAB?

Hi,
I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me with this.
I've just flashed to Cookie Energy Style, and had downloaded and installed the CAB for HTC Messaging, which now seems to be okay.
However, I'm wondering if there is a similar one for HTC Email. I have done a search on this thread, but can only find posts related to the text messaging side of things.
When I actually open an email and click reply, it seems to use the HTC email, which is what I wanted. However, if I'm viewing the email as the preview, or select 'New' from the menu, it opens the email/reply in Windows Email.
Is there anyway to configure this so it always uses the HTC email client instead?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There isnt a HTC email client, HTC adds some features to the winmo client, if you can see a search button in the upper right corner when you open a rcvd email msg (+ a big "To" btn upper left in outlook exchange account) then thats your lot.

Annoyances and solution

Hi all,
I'm thinking of posting this thread and if people can tell me annoyance that they have and possible solutions I'll update this post.
I'll start off
Problem 1:
Gmail contacts syncing syncs ALL your contacts from gmail not just the "my contacts"
Solution: go to contacts -> menu button -> display options and then selection "Only contacts with phones"
Problem 2:
Slide to call/sms. If you have multiple numbers for contacts say home and mobile, it'll dial home first.
Solution: Click on the contact name. Press menu button -> Mark as default and then select which default number you want. Pain in the butt if you asked me.
Problem 3:
Can't get into recovery mode through "Vol up + home + power"
Solution: This is because you haven't got it plugged in. Plug in the usb cable and it'll be sweet. I think i needs to be connected to power source. Have not tried so if someone can confirm this, but I can confirm if you plug it in usb port
thanks cool threads.

That's not a solution but a bad clumsy workaround!
For me it's not usefull, since I do have email-only contacts which I want in my adressbook, but plently of email adresses in "all contacts" which I don't want to have on my phone's adressbook. Hopefully Samsung will fix this soon, as well as the problem with gmail contacts and groups/ringtones in general.
I have gone from a Sony X1 to a Palm Pre and both gave me major problems. But i don't have one single annoyance with this Samsung. Really nice bit of kit. If it doesn't fall apart after a year it will take the top spot as my best phone ever which is currently the Sony W810i. .

Ya but it's the only quick solution atm. Wonder why Samsung took out the "my contacts" option from stock roml.....
Q: Where is the option to assign a custom ringtone to a contact?
A: Like me you probably have ALL your contacts in google's cloud. Only wayI've found to set a custom ringtone is to create a new contact on the "phone", then set a ringtone on it, then link it to the google contact. Clumsy, but works.
Q: Doesn't mount SD on OS X
A: Make sure you have the USB option on the phone set to Mass Storage (not Kies) and turn on USB debugging. Should be fine after that.
Problem 1:
agree for the fact that it is a clumsy workaround.
Very happy that somebody find this anoyance and report it, I have my SGS for 2 days (1st android device) and thought I missed something.
Wondering if people are really using this phone and not just hacking it :=)
(also it's nice to see such a community)
Why nobody (or nearly, I have been googling many hours without finding and answer) is talking about this: do people think that nowadays phone have to be buggy?????
So, for those that are googling contact group synchronization problems between samsung galaxy s and gmail: IT DOES NOT WORK (or at least not completely)
Best regards to the forum and samsung, please do your homework...... brilliant hard clumsy soft you better use stock android IMHO
