I am shopping for big SD Card with Xmas Bonus
I have searched but can't find any info on the maximum adressable memory for storage card slot or advanced specs to match cards, can anyone shed some light?
I had been using a 2gb card since I got my Universal in October and just today received my 4gb card in the mail. I transfered everything over (plus a lot more) including several programs that are installed to the storage card and it's been fine so far.
I have a 1GB card now, 4gb is the largest available at the moment, but we should be seeing 16 and 32 GB cards next year , look here:
http://www.sdcard.com/europe/TextPage.asp?Page=2
The universal must have a limit on adressable memory and I wondered where we would have to stop? Also what is the card speed, there are 133x and 150x around, is it worth getting the faster cards or what?

Dont bother, doesnt make a blind bit of difference to your PPC... only when transferring data to your desk/lap top... high speed cards are for high end digicams
philtech44 - now i understand why transfer takes longer through activesync to device than card reader many thanks
my 1GB card is an integral, cost £40 from local indie phone shop
I was told by Leaf Wireless, the distributors of HTC in SA and Africa that the Hermes will support a 4gb micro card(Trans Flash).
I am not sure if this has been posted before, but there seemed to be speculation about this in the past on some threads.
Can anyone who has actually tried this confirm.
I am not sure if the new ROM's available have anything to do with this or not.
I believe 4GB requires FAT32 format. Try formatting a 1 or 2GB with FAT32 and see if it operates.
The Hermes can definately handle FAT 32 formated cards. I have flashed my Hermes using a 1GB micro SD card formated to FAT 32 several times with no problems. My 2GB card that I keep in the phone is also formated to FAT 32.
There have been differing reports concerning whether the 4GB SDHC format is supported or not. What we do know is this: SDHC in the registry doesn't stand for SD High Capacity.
speed compare - FAT16 vs. FAT32
I have 512MB Kingston, I tryed to use FAT16 and also FAT32 and benchmark speed on this card - FAT32 was faster, but only at some sizes of files. this results is for FAT32, tomorrow, when I am back to my PC I can format card to FAT16 and update this post with new images. otherwise, for me is 512MB enough. I have mp3 creative zen player, and I dont need use TyTN as video/mp3 player, only as storage for my documents, and installation files, so question if 4GB card work is for only matter of interest.
but there is one important thing. If you using card bigger than 512MB, it is better to use FAT32, coz if you dont you waste your space (it is known problem from PC disks). if someone have a bigger card, than 512MB try to format to FAT16, use pocket mechanic Slack Analysis function and you can see how much space is not used. on my card at this time is on FAT32 only 1,60MB (0,59%). on FAT16 is much more.
all results of benchmark is in archive. tomorrow I will update this post for results on FAT16, and also Slack analysis report.
.:update:.
rest of benchmark, tested FAT16, slack for current cluster size (8kB) is 1.10 % which is 3,40MB instead of 1,60MB for FAT32. This results is only for me, you can have different results, I have used only 50% of capacity.
Did we determine that someone ACTUALLY has a 4gb MicroSD card and IS using it formatted in some way (FAT16/FAT32)?
If we EVER get some of the SDHC micro cards in at work then i will (cough cough) sacrifice one for the xda team, but i predict it will be a LONG time before they are even ordered (no demand for them as of yet)

How can there not be a demand? My 2GB one is stuffed full!
Zilch.
The retailer i work for (just a dead end weekend job...im an engineer student in uni) doesnt sell to people as technically minded as us, most people use the sd micro cards for mediocre phones like the Moto-razr etc... Its a home retailer primarily, they have only just started selling the 2gb versions.

So? Even your average iPod user knows you can stuff twice as many MP3s onto a 4GB card as you can with a 2GB one. Surely?
Zilch.
Been a couple of months now.
Anyone tried and succeeded or failed with a 4Gb MicroSD in the Hermes?
SOOOOOOON!
Not here yet, but right around the corner. These are SD NOT SDHC. Should work fine. I will post results when mine arrives.

If someone can actually get the 4gb card working then i think we have some bright prospects to actually see higher capacities[8gb+] working since they all use the sdhc format. Although i still dont know why the htc peepz didnt put a rubber cover [or even a plastic one for that matter] on the sd slot. Currently there is just soo much potential for dust, grime and moisture to get in there!
I do understand the point that <b>mrvanx </b> is making. The majority of the mobile community today are more than happy with their 1gb cards...and when there is no significant demand...then there is no motif for a [reasonably priced] supply!
I emailed HTC Europe about this and I got a reply that the Hermes is able to work with SDHC Cards, but HTC Europe only advises card up to 2 gig. So....we still don't know anything.....
4Gb SDHC seems not to work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308679&page=2&highlight=4gb+micro+sd
Anyone can confirm this? Or maybe someone got it working?
In my area, 4Gb micro SDHC is not even available in shops.
Anyone knows, if there will be 4Gb micro SD (without HC) available?
Regards,
ARo
Confusion
Some people here seem to be talking about SDHC and other SD cards. From what I understand MicroSDHC wont work and no one has tried a 4Gb MicroSD card yet.
If you're in the UK it looks like 4Gb MicroSD cards are now available:

If i could redirect you guys to THIS POST.........anyone confirm my thinking on this?
I have a 4gb microSDHC card (bought it from eBay) and it definitely does NOT work in my TyTN.

Remember dude, there has been no such update or even attempt at one yet. You may be quite valuable for testing some patches if you keep hold of it.
ok guys... some info...
There are SDHC drivers for Windows Mobile 5 & 6, they are not included in your ROM's at the moment.
The Hermes USB hardware (Samsung 2440) 'DOES' theoretically support SDHC cards, but there is no way of telling if the firmware on the controller supports it.
If there is a hardware programmer out there that can help i can sacrifice a device...
Hey guys,
Whats the largest micro sd I can place in my Leo... Currently have an 8 GB in there but am quickly filling it since having movies / music on it like no tomorrow!!
Any help would be great, thanks dudes.
You didn't find the answer anywhere on the net? In that case, they can hold a max of 128GB.

I've got a 16GB in mine and it works perfectly. I'll get a 32GB but want the price to drop before I do. They're still quite pricey.
16GB is suiting me fine. I have a seperate 8GB one for putting movies and stuff on. It just means I have to have CorePlayer installed on the device so I can switch cards and still play movies.
Edit:
Ignore the above comment by lude219. 128GB cards won't be available until next year at the earliest. 32GB is currently the largest on the market. There will be 64GB (and possibly 48GB) soon, but not yet.
Thank you johncmolyneux, I think I might wait a bit and get a 32gb just to be sure!
Thanks for your help dude.

can't find any 32gb micro sds on amazon or ebay? only normal sized SDHC cards.
Samsung expect their 32GB to be in the market by February according to their recent announcement, I expect Sandisk will want to be released for sale by then also.
Class 6 cards are available from non-Sandisk manufacturers by the way.
im guessing the will charge a ridculous amount...probs about £50 or some ****
16 Gb is the maximum today.
There is NO 32 gb on the market at this time, but expected.

is that because of hardware or software? i had an old HTC Excalibur that ran winmo 5.0 back in the day. got a 8 gig card that wouldn't read in it until i flashed it to winmo 6.5. after that, it read the card no problem. funny thing is the 'fine folks' over at T-Mobile assured me that nothing over 4GB would ever work in my phone.
so i wonder, with our devices being able to run winmo, android, different variations of linux, etc... could it be just a software problem?
The HTC HD2 can only hold up to a 32 gig 2.0 Micro SD card. Click the link for proof, notice the "Expansion" in the spec list, oh yeah this is straight from HTC.

interesting info
so i started surfing around, looking for more info on this topic. i found a thread from another forum citing some interesting conversation regarding the same issue. to quote from page 5 of that forum...
"What the SD 4.0 specification will add is another pin to SDXC cards which will enable the higher read/write speeds. The rest of the pins will still be present and will still act exactly like they used to. So SDXC cards will always be compatible with SDHC readers, you just won't be able to read/write from them at 300mbit/s. And that's where a firmware update can't change things; no firmware update will allow the camera to use an SDXC card at its full, currently-non-existent future speed because that extra pin interface won't be present.
'But a firmware update CAN add support for exFAT, so all the other benefits of SDXC can in fact be added to our cameras through a firmware update. These benefits include higher capacities, larger maximum file size, and faster file deleting (because that's an exFAT feature, not an SDXC feature).
'It should be noted that the higher capacities have nothing to do with exFAT. FAT32 can have volumes up to 2 TB in size. The 32GB limit on SDHC cards was artificially imposed by the SD 2.0 specification, and has now been lifted with SD 3.0. However, the larger maximum file size IS a benefit of exFAT, because files used to be limited to 4 GB on FAT32."
so i gotta think this will also apply to any other device that can physically run an SDHC card.
let the debate begin

Hmmmm interesting conversation there, I read all six pages by the way. The one guy seemed to be pretty sure of himself. But from what he said if you use a SDXC card that uses extFAT in a decice that does not support extFAT. It will reformat it with Fat 32 making it a regular SDHC card without the extra advantage of the higher speeds that a SDXC reader that does support extFAT can use.
right, that's what i got out of it too. but the big bonus there is that even with the reformat, the space on that card is still accessible, be it 'just' sdhc speeds. that's ok though, cuz that's what we're used to. i'd really like some of the xda developers to take a look at this and see what they can do.
on a somewhat related note, there's a program i use on my laptop called 'macdrive' which allows me to view previously unrecognized files and partitions which windows doesn't see naturally. this allows me to tri-boot (linux, mac, and windows) and modify each of those partitions from any one of the systems.
point here, is that even if there is initially a problem reading the data on a sdxc card, it seems that problem is only with the software not hardware and therefore can be modified.
if i could program i'd start experimenting myself.

This is very true, and I am in the same boot as you. I wish I had the dev knowledge and skills to start working on something for this, or a real dev could get there hands on this and see what is possible. I guess the only true way to put this to the test is for someone to get there hands on one of these beast of a SD card (64 to 128 gig what ) and stick it in the HD2 to see what it does.
Hi all,
Apologies for the rambling post below but....
I would like to report major problems I have experienced with 32gb Micro SD cards with a number of Android devices, and most recently my new Desire HD.
The problems occur when I copy across my music library to the 32gb SD. It is a mixture of MP3 and AAC (mp4) files and the initial amount of data is a minimum of 5gb. All the data copies across fine, as I can tell from the available space under settings/SD & phone storage. However, the stock music player app does not recognise roughly half the music, and some of the music it has recognised produces a "cannot play this file format" message if i try and listen to it.
Using Astro File Manager, I then browse to the location on the SD card where I have copied the music and find that the music (that was not recognised) , is not physically on the SD card (despite the available space remaining suggesting the files are there).
If I then copy new music to the Desire HD on the SD card, the music copies over but the same scenario above occurs.
If I keep the SD card in the phone for 24 hrs the phone will crash numerous times and the only way I can turn the phone back on is to remove the battery.
I have tested 4 different 32gb Micro SDHC cards, 2 Class 4 SanDisks and 2 Class 6 Kingstons, same results with both.
Phone-wise, I have tested this on an HTC Wildfire and Samsung Galaxy S (running Android 2.1) and an HTC Desire and HTC Desire HD (running 2.2). I will test on a Samsung Galaxy Tab tonight.
Also, I have tested the above after formatting the SD card in the devices themselves, and from formatting the SD card from Windows 7 using FAT32 and 32kilobytes as the allocation unit size.
Has anyone else experiences issues with 32gb Micro SDHC cards? FYI, the stock 8gb Samsung SD card that comes with the Desire HD works without any issues whatsoever.
regards
Michael
I'm so glad you've posted these findings, I was contemplating buying a 32GB microsd card but could not justify paying more than twice the amount it costs for a 16GB card. I think I'm going to settle with a 16GB card now.
EDIT:-
Just thought about something, where are you doing this from, Windows 7 ? There is a Microsoft Windows update that fixes a problem with Windows 7 not reading 32GB or higher memory cards properly.

I have one I got last week thats working perfect! 32GB class 4 from mymemory.co.uk (their own card, no manufacturer name).
I've copied a bunch of music and some HDTV episodes onto it so it's almost full, all files are definitely there and I've had no issues with playback. Using Astro too.
Copied them over on a Windows 7 system with Android Manager WiFi, I've used the regular USB cable once or twice which works fine too.
I also have a 32gig card.
Initially I had similar problems to you bit sure what fixed it, HTC sync works and I did reboot one or twice, but its all working

No issues with my Integral 32GB Class 4 card.
Try formatting with 32k cluster size...I've read that it helps with stuttering video issue, maybe it also helps with this...
Then nice to know it's a spesific problem not common. Thanks for the feedbacks guys.
I'm having exactly same problems as post 1. Someone suggested it might be a fake 32GB card so I'm currently running h2testw on it to see.

That was the case with my 32GB one. h2testw reported only the first 1.8GB usable.
I suspect these are factory rejects being snatched before being destroyed/recycled.
I've been using a Kingston Class 4 32Gb card for 2-3 months now with absolutely no problems. Almost full of music and Sat Nav maps, and not even a hint of problems. Make sure you buy from a reputable, or at least traceable, supplier!
Sounds like the card is faulty or fake, ALWAYS test with H2TESTW and format it with Panasonic's SD Formatter app BEFORE using it with any device! Too many dodgey cards out there!

Mind if I ask where the hell did you find 32GB class 6 Kingston or other cards.
I can't find anything higher than class 4. Also on their official page there aren't any 32gb microSDHC class 6+.
Ho everybody this is the answer. I have bought over 10 32gb micro SD cards from eBay and amazon.
Some would not even format. Dome would format but while trying to transfer the files half way through the card would fail and would not be able to format or only see the card as 8gb.
Some would format and transfer would be good but by the time I would check for the data on the card the data would have disappeared.
Let me make one thing clear ALL THESE CARDS WERE CHEAP NOCK OFFS AND CHEAP QUALITY FROM CHINA.
I payed from £25 to £80 from eBay and amazon and they all failed.
I bought ONE FROM SCAN.CO.UK and it worked first time and still works with no issues thank God.
IT IS NOT THE DHD IT IS THE CARDS.
The reason they all failed and why its so hard to believe is because not everyone that buys the cards would transfer so much data at the beginning which is why the card failed, the huge amount of data being transferred showed the true defects in the card.
I really hope this helped.
Kind regards
Imran

I've had a Lexar class 10 32GB I got from Amazon for £70 - works really well. Took a bit longer to 'prepare' when I first put it in, but no problems since.
Has anyone had any issues running CM7 on a SanDisk Class4 microSD?
I bought one used, and got CM7 running, but with plenty of Force Close errors. After running a benchmark on the card, it sounds like I got a bad card (for running CM7, anyways).
Here are my CrystalDiskMark scores, run with the same card, in various adapters on my laptop:
SanDisk 32GB Class4
Random Write 4KB (QD=32)
Kingston USB Card Reader
0.230 MB/s [ 56.3 IOPS]
Patriot microSD Card Adapter in SD Card Slot ThinkPad L412
0.054 MB/s [ 13.2 IOPS]
SimpleTech microSD Card Adapter in SD Card Slot ThinkPad L412
0.065 MB/s [ 15.9 IOPS]
Kinda crappy compared to other results I've seen. Anyone else have bad luck? Any suggestions, other than a new card?
Thanks!
You'll always get lower scores when testing in a card adapter compared to a USB reader - but the speed you get from the reader seems a bit below normal by about half - you might've just gotten a bad card.
Is it a recent purchase? You can probably exchange it - they run off a ton of these at a time and a bad one's bound to slip through here and there.
The links to the memory card threads are in my sig if you wanna jump back into them quickly.
Where did you buy the card from? Hopefully it is defective and returnable, rather than counterfeit.

This is my suspicion.. However, C4 I'd think he bought in a Brick and Mortar vs online where it's entirely too easy to wind up with counterfeit SD cards.
Bought it from a guy on craigslist. The card seems legit, full 32GB capacity, 6MB/s seq. write speed, just crappy random write speed.
Anyone else with a SanDisk 32GB Class4 care to post CrystalDiskMark Results? I haven't found any when searching the forums... just 8GB and 16GB...
I bought a sandisk 32gb class4 from amazon. I don't recall the benchmark numbers off the top of my head, so I'll have to test it when I get home from work.
I did, however, recently move over from booting off the sdcard to booting off the emmc... It seemed to be a HUGE difference in performance. While I didn't get any FC's when running on the sdcard, the system did feel a bit laggy. Or I could just be imagining things...
Interesting. I look forward to seeing your benchmark results. Was your a standard SanDisk card, or one of those "EXTREME" cards? (do they make those in a class4?)
I've read that a lot of people like running CM7 directly from the onboard memory. I'm weary of doing that, and I also like having the standard nook software too. Maybe if there was a way to dual-boot from the eMMC, then maybe I'd try it.
Thanks in advance for your benchmark test results.
I have two different SanDisk 32gb cards and both have been working fine for me. I can't remember the benchmarks right now but I do remember them being similar but a little better than may 16 gb and 8 gb SanDisk class 4 cards.
It also didn't seem sluggish to me after overclocking it a little bit.

If you have a good card then CM7 runs fine from it and I've done quite a few onto 32G Sandisk class 4 and got nice performance. However, there are significant advantages in running from emmc. For example, you then use the SD card as a simple, single partition card containing just user / data files rather than as a multi-partition card containing both the ROM partitions and user data. Updates become easier to manage as the standard ROM Manager / clockwork methods just work as intended rather than having to put renamed update zips onto the boot partition of the SD.
I'd not be weary of it, just because it sounds like a risky one way trip. There are good ways of reverting to stock if you need to.
It is possible to dual boot Nook stock and CM7 off the emmc, and I did that successfully for a while. The key is in creating extra partitions and moving the Nook software to the new partitions. Various guides are available, e.g.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275859
I eventually simplified my family installs down to just cm7 as we ended up never using the stock Nook. One can use the Android Nook app for basic B&N content but if you use for magazine or childrens books then that is a good reason for maintaining a stock Nook. I normally use SD installs for any non-technical friends where there is a good comfort factor in an easy revert to stock.
I actually gave up on ever getting a 32gb card to work properly after I went through several of them. I just doesn't seem like the OS can do a good job with all of that extra space.
Things that fly on a 16gb card are terrible on a 32gb card that benchmarks the same way.

With all the good things I've read about sandisk I'm loath to try another 32gb card as I want the thing to work well.
Now I'm watching newegg for the next sale........

I received my 32GB Sandisk Class 4 micro sdhc card from Newegg.com earlier today and just wanted to report back that it is writing fast. I'm getting between 4.1MB/s to 4.9MB/s on it.

If booting off uSD, you should pay attention on the small write data (4K Write)
If it's more than 1MB/s, it's good.
If it's close to 1MB/s, it's OK.
If it's somewhere around 0.0xxx, then it's bad for NC
I bought four (4) Sandisk32g cards from geeks.com,part #SDSDQ-32GB.They are testing out great.The (4K)writes are 1.277(slowest card) to 1.613(highest card).
($28 /card and free shipping)
I also tried their 16G Sandisk cards,VERY BAD,they test out at 0.024 (4K)write

I actually gave up on ever getting a 32gb card to work properly after I went through several of them. I just doesn't seem like the OS can do a good job with all of that extra space.
Things that fly on a 16gb card are terrible on a 32gb card that benchmarks the same way.

I bought two 32 GB Sandisk Class 4 cards from 1SaleADay in October. One started experiencing Force Close errrors on my Nook Color after 4 or 5 months. Eventually it could not even unpack the zip files and build properly. I copied a working image from another flash onto it. It then worked until I started updating and installing apps. It seems that writing to some area of flash, not sure which partition, triggers the start of the force close. During some tests, it would run until I enabled WiFi. I think apps were accessing the WiFi and trying to write to flash.
The 2nd flash from 1SaleADay was used by a relative. I updated all app in December. The relative played Freecell and maybe a few other apps once every few weeks. As soon as I attempted to update apps here in May the Force Close issue appeared. The NC had been running fine with the December updates.
A co-worker bought the NC based on my recommendation. He bought a SanDisk 32GB Class 4 card from a reseller at Amazon. He started experience Force Close issue shortly after mine.
All three 32GB cards had great ramdom read/write 4K benchmarks like other SanDisk cards. I used CrystalDiskMark to test the cards when they were new and when the first two failed. I also ran H2testw on one or two of the first cards that experienced the Force Close errors. All tests indicate the flash is still good.
The first two NCs have been running fine now for a few months with 16 GB SanDisk Class 4 cards I bought in September from Newegg. I need to put a 16 GB in my relative's NC.
I did buy some more 32 GB SanDisk cards from Amazon (not a 3rd party reseller) for $22 a few weeks ago. I hold little hope for them to work for long in a NC. I may try one. I bought them primarily to use in other devices.
The first card to fail has been running fine in my non-rooted HTC Incredible 2 for months now. I use it for podcasts so I am reading and writing to it daily but am not running the OS from it like the NC.
Running the Fix Permission function of the ROM Manager did not eliminate the Force Close issue on my relative's NC.
Thought that was supposed to be the best card to use

You're right. This one is way better, The One To Buy. You should buy that one.
