Poor Exec ergonomics? Just me or everybody?

There are a few things I'd change about the ergonomics of the Universal. I'm right-handed so I hold the thing in my left hand and operate with my right. Before this I had an XDA2.
- on/off switch should be on the right-hand side of the case, under the 'Enter' key and should be easier to find without looking (i.e. by feel only). In portrait mode it should be at the top of the machine
- the pen should come out of the case in the same location as it does for the XDA2, i.e. under the '->' key on the keyboard. In portrait mode I have to reach over the top of the Exec and fumble the pen out from the left side of the machine
- the phone answer/end buttons on the hinge are exactly where my thumb is located when I hold the phone while talking in portrait mode (I listen through my left ear), so I often press them by accident while talking. They should be at the opposite end of the hinge IMHO and they should light up when a call comes in
- camera lens is at the wrong end of the machine: in tablet mode but landscape (which is the only orientation the camera seems to allow :roll: :?: ) I hold the Exec with my left hand and press the shutter button with my right and in this position my left-hand fingers often obscure the lens. If the lens was at the SD-card end of the case I could hold the Exec comfortably in my left hand without obscuring the lens
I love this machine but I'm curious to know whether I'm the only one who finds it slightly awkward to use in some circumstances. Maybe because of the dual format (tablet/laptop) it'd be impossible to get perfect, but the above changes would help me a lot.

Kind of agree, but I'll adapt.
The other niggle - my lovely Proporta case, complete with belt clip - you leave the device in the case to use it. Perfect! Except the toggle for the belt clip is, of course, on the previously "flat" camera side, so I can no longer sit the thing on a desk to type without first unscrewing (and probably losing) the belt clip toggle...
Pah.

It seems that space issues dictate where the pen went.
Infact, if you look the end curves to go above the usb socket!
I used to laugh at the Magician owners when I had XDAII, i had a real stylus and they had a stubby little square thing.
Bah, i feel foolish now.

On the positive side though, just how many speakers does this thing have? I've counted four so far...
Two on the side edge (stereo), plus one above the screen in tablet mode, and then another one in the plain side where the holes are (above the Enter key when the clamshell is closed).
Just answered a phone call with the case closed and the sound was coming from those holes. So we can answer it both when the clamshell is closed and when it's in tablet mode. Awesome! No more dirty screen!
Does it automatically answer the phone if you open the clamshell to view the screen when it rings? Haven't tried this yet.

lol ive been meaning to do that for months.
and yup. ive just tested it, you can open and close as many times as you like, then close and press the green button.

the caller detials are nicer in wide and the pic is bigger im sure

Front aluminum sheet!!
Has anyone encountered the same?! I have used the phone with closed clamshell and many times when my sideburners got stuck in between the slight attachement edge of the metal sheet on the clamshel!
I thought it is inconvenient and now I believe it is so! The metal sheet is not properly glued to the phone body!!

No Reset Button only a black foil

Hi,
my Nike has no reset button on the side of the usb connector. In the hole is only a black foil but no button. Anybody the same problem

Don't push the stylus horizontally into the phone, push it down into it (towards the front screen, IYKWIM and don't do it hard either, only needs a gentle one. If you push it sideways, you'll miss the buttone...and think it's not there

You mean they changed how the reset button works but didnt had the decency of placing it outside yet?
Is HTC learning things from Nokia?
They already have the worst price/hardware ratio, the ppc's are beautifull but slow, the drivers are bad and now they arent even user friendly... they are slowly becoming nokia...lol.

Magnet attached at the back cover

Hi all! Im in love with this community from day 1
its my 1st thread though seeking for help/advice/your superior knowledge
Thing is that i want to mount my phone in my car using a small magnet attached somewhere at the dashboard and stick my HD2s back cover which is metallic...
my question is: is it possible because of the nature of the magnet to cause problems in the phones operation?? like radio interference or something like this?

i think a magnet may interfere with the touch screen. not positive on this but am sure i`v read somewhere about tiny magnets being in the tip of some capacitive screen stylus`s. a stronger magnet to hold a hd2 would surely result in some type of touch screen interference. but like i said am not a 100% certain.

magnetism will not affect a capacitive touch screen. It will however mess about with the compass!

A capacitive Touchscreen works like a capacitor, whichs field is "spread" over the surface of the screen. By tapping you will change the the resistance of the oscilating resonant circuit, which has a specific resistance (which is related to the dielectric medium, which is changed by your finger)
With this, the phone is able to locate your finger in X + Y axis to find out where you have tapped.

Yes, obviously it will but thats the least of my worries as it wont be permanently attached to the magnet and the times it will, i wont be needing the compass app.
so if thats the only problem i think im gonna give a try to this project...

Does this mean that a magnet at the back could interfere with the circuit of the screen? and if yes i guess is temporary right?

this is school knowledge...

after some trial and error i found out that the back cover of HD2 although it looks metallic apparently its not coz it can't be attached to a magnet...

That would only mean that it is not made of an iron compound

I think it is made from stailess steel.magnets do not work on S/S.

Is that true? I know old compasses relied on a magnetised needle to work, but I thought the compass in the HD2 got it's direction from the GPS and the accelerator software??? How would a magnet affect these?

no it's a dedicated compass hardware
Actually, even my notebook apparently hurts it! Looses calibration

yes several times when i opened the compass application arround various interferences it asked me to move it in the usual 8-like movement to calibrate itself..

what about the rest of the phone and memory and SD card wouldnt it affect the storage ? i clecned out my speakerphone with a very small magnet yesterday to get all the lil pieces stuck on it.
and after that my phone(touch pro2) completely froze up and kept freezing up after first input untill i did a hard reset.

i did another little test with a small round magnet around 2cm diameter. i moved it around the back of the phone while looking at the screen and i didnt notice any interference to the screen, at least to my eyes it looked like the magnet did not interfere with the phone at all.
However i moved the magnet to the screen and tried to touch the screen gently with the edge of the magnet and the screen responded immediately and it looked very precise too! i did several presses to the screen with the magnet and in all of them the screen responded exactly as it should, just like it should with the press of a finger, i even wrote some letters as text and it worked great. so i guess thats how they make capacitive stylus..
next time im gonna try to draw on notes application and see how precise it is on that.. (as long as i find a smaller magnet that i can handle better than this one)
i might try to make my own capacitive stylus....

I have attatched a magnet to the back of my HD2 so i can use my vent mount, i havent noticed any adverse effects.

Attention with clicking screen and dust under it !!!

I got my N1 1 week before, and i'm really satisfied with this phone.
Since the first day that i got it, i tested it by applying pressure to the corners of the screen, just to check if it had any problems of clicking screen like the other users reported, and it was ok, no clicking and everything normal.
But today, i tested it again and i noticed that it clicked near the touch buttons at the bottom of the screen I applied pressure on it, and it seemed like it glued again and didn't click anymore, after several hours it begun to click again
I think i will apply the hairdryer method, before dust goes under my screen.
I just opened this thread to warn the other N1 owners, to check their phone again, so you are all sure that you have no problems with your screen.

What's with this clicking?! I don't understand where you see the problem

Thats a good point cause I just got the N1 couple of days ago and noticed a clicking sound on the top area. Didn't know this was a known issue. Gonna have to look into it further.

I tried telling you guys in the thread I started (the other one about the dust under the screen), where I first suggested using a hairdryer... that everyone should go ahead and warm up the screen and make sure it's sealed properly. The glue has to be warmed up well to really get tacky so when it cools it will stay sealed since it's porous.

Yeah I did something like that. When I was leaving work I figured if I crank up the heat all the way up and hold the phone in front of the vent it might achieve the same thing and it seems like its good now. I don't here any clicking any more. I actually realized it was clicking from the bottom area as well aside from the top but it seems good (hopefully).

What exactly do you guys do to get that clicking sound? You press the edges of the screen? Applying a lot of pressure, or the usual? I don't seem to be getting anything weird, but I'm not pressing too much either.

You have to press at the corners with a good deal of pressure to hear the clicking.

Hm, I don't seem to be getting any noise. Is it loud, or barely noticeable?
Also, if I start to hear it in the future, is it an indicator that I might get the dust problem? Should I heat it with a hair drier? Won't that melt the plastic parts of the phone?

Press hard then let go and you may hear a very faint click. You have to listen for it. If you hear nothing then I guess your unit is fine.
Hairdryers shouldn't melt the plastic components, but should be hot enough to warm the adhesive up.

Ah, sounds like breaking the glue under the screen or something..
I used the hairdryer and it seems to work for a short time on the 4 softkeys.
Will try the upper part now

I am having trouble with this, after reading this thread I noticed the 2 bottom corners of my screen do click when pressing down on them hard, so took out the hair dryer and did each corner for about 2 min on full heat full blast, screen was hot to the touch, applied firm pressure while it was cooling afterwards, and there was no clicking at that time.
Now afew minutes after it is still clicking.
How did you guys do it exacly?
edit: nvm got it, had to hold down harder and right at the edge of the screen.

Yeah Mafi0s0, thats what i did too. I realised my screen clicking again after doing it the first time. Doing it the second time - it required alot of pressure, but doesn't seem to clicking anymore.

Thanx for the tips guys, I also had the same problem, but applying more pressure fixed the thing.

Mine also had the clicking at the bottom, and i have some dust under the screen.
It fiexed for now .. but i will probably disassemble it to clean all the dust if it gets worst.

This hair dryer method hasnt worked for me at all, I have tried 3 times, I just checked then and the clicking is heaps bad, its very loud. I am gonna get dust under my screen for sure if I dont fix this.
How have you guys who have been successful done it exactly?

Today I noticed 2 very small dust particles under my screen. After seeing this thread I did the corner test and it turns out the the bottom right of my screen clicks. I did the hair dryer trick and it seems to have fixed it.

So I've browsed around and there are plenty of screen issues, but I haven't seen the one I'm experiencing nor have I seen a solution. When I press the power button my screen comes on and turns off right away. Sometimes a few seconds after I hit the power button sometimes even longer. Most times I won't even be able to put in my security pin to unlock the phone. I see people saying Verizon will do an update soon but that isn't good enough considering I can't use the phone. I did find a loop hole to this problem. Quick start the camera with the volume down button then press the home button after the camera loads and it won't shut off by itself. I thought I'd post this method up for others having this frustration.
If this particular problem has been discussed and beaten to death then the mods can close the thread.
I've got a YouTube link but I don't have 10 posts to show you. Search for user name "vfreeza" and it is the only video I've uploaded. You'll see my first time turning the screen on was using the quick camera method and the times after is with just the power button. The screen turns off without even my hand touching the phone.

Yup I read that too. My fingers rest at the corners of the phone and I've tried the not cover sensor thing as well, makes no difference.

Wish I could disable the sensor. I hate this problem

Just a quick update. I bought a Diztronic tpu case and the moment I put it on all the problems went away. Screen acted nornal and knock works. My guess is without the case my hand is making some kind of connection it shouldn't be when I'm holding it without a case.

Did your old case hug the bezels tight? because it tends to mess with the digitizer perhaps the incipio feather case? or a plastic case of some sort? just curious im pretty sure that was your problem cause if you barely press on the screen youll notice waves in the lcd screen and since the bezels are so small on this device some cases can do that.

My phone has that very problem and it's driving me insane.. i love this phone, but it truly is a hassel to use it after its been idle for awhile.. or at night... hands no where near the sensor or anything, it could be laying straight up or down n itll still have that problem.. thanks for reading.
I normally just wipe the sensor area, n it magically starts working again.. n i don't touch it, n the problem comes back after awhile....
Also naked phone besides screen protector, but it's not covering up the sensor.

My phone does the same thing. It's so ****ing annoying.
