Which Android Build Are You Using? - Touch CDMA General

I've messed with a few and still haven't settled on one yet. For Ion I would say system-xrom1.4r3.sqsh and system-sensehero-manup-1.3.3.sqsh for Hero. Not having any luck on the finding a cupcake build that has working bluetooth. I'm holding off on Donut since I need GPS.

[Android] Droid-Ion Donut 1.6 for the Vogue by Zenulator
It's the fastest Android build I've ever used. It takes Android from unusable to daily usable I think.

I might have to give the Droid-Ion a go even though GPS isn't working on Donut yet.

I don't use GPS very often so I intend to just boot into WinMo when I need it.

This must mean you aren't an avid fan of Zombie yet on Android

I dabbled in a bit of all the 1.5 cupcake-based builds (cyanogen, xROM, Rogersetc), but I always found myself going back to vilord's Ion. It's fast, stable, looks nice enough and most of it works with the hardware we have. I haven't messed with Hero builds much, never really had much luck with 'em. They just seemed "heavier" than I like my OS to be on hardware of this vintage.
Currently I'm booting either Zenulator's new Droid-Ion 1.6 or plemen's HeroBlend 1.6. Both look really sweet, they're rock solid, daily use type builds in my opinion (as long as you don't need GPS).

Has anybody gotten bluetooth working with any builds? I had it working on a cupcake build, but I forget which one it was now. I was able to pair my Motorobola headset no problem.

POLL: Which Cupcake ROM is your favorite?

Okay, so I've seen almost a dozen threads asking for comparisons, and maybe someone will do a table at some point, but I don't think one exists now. Anyway, many of the threads on this topic have been locked because they "degenerate into name calling" and "demotivate the devs if their ROM isn't the best". While both of those outcomes are bad, I think there is value in having some quick idea of who is running what and why, and while some of us may vote one way today and another tomorrow the poll feature appears to be the only way to quickly gauge the breakdown and to catch the large moves that will occur over time as some developers slow down on release schedules and others keep moving forward.
So I have never posted a poll in all my years in forums, but hopefully this will work out. Vote for your favorite, and then tell us why. Give EVERY dev the respect they are due, and emphasize what you like about your favorite ROM and what opportunities you've identified to improve it and possibly some of the others you don't run at the moment. This philosophy is why I made the question about that which is your favorite, not which is "best", which seems to be the word that starts the arguments.

im still on 5.0.2G only because of the google calendar widget
i tried putting the google calendar onto the adp builds and it would keep force closing processes.gapps and it was breaking the whole rom
ive looked over the forum
if anyone knows how to get the google calendar widget onto the adp rom please let me know
thanks you
ps
thank you to everyone
I am currently running JesusFreke's 1.5 just to try it out; but I honestly find no difference between his build and Haykuro's 1.5Hr3 (Performance may be smoother/faster but it might be my imagination); however I have to give Haykuro his props because I was on Cupcake for a month before today's release thanks to him!
good job on this thread,
hope everyone keeps on topic and hope noobs don't make another thread about which cupcake build is better etc.
Im currently running JesusFreke 1.5 like many of us are, performance and speed no real different like fdisk81 said, both seem very stable and quick no lags what so ever.
Only thing i miss from Haykuro ADP 1.5 is the ability to install the HTC VK and use it together with the google VK along with the HTC widgets but its fine.
we'll probably be able to port them over also.
Overrall, all the builds are almost similar in looks and performance, its really basic on perference.
Still on Haykuro's 5.02G here until JesusFreke gets more locales for his ADP 1.5.
I usually don't do this but i had the Dude's and recently switched to JF's but i'm really missing the PDF reader .. anyone know how i can get it stand alone...i think they're both pretty good
There are alot of PDF readers available on the market. Many are free and quite decent.
Thedudes' is great though. I haven't updated to JF yet, but I will as soon as there are more locales available.
I keep ending up back with thedude's, no issues so far with a2sd, and the pdf reader is a must have for me.

Thanks for the advice.. i did take a look at the market and tried what was free because i didn't want to pay for a possible dissapointment to find that the one included in the dude's build is pretty flawless and quick I think i might just end up switching back to his build..i'm gonna miss the speed of JF's build but oh well i'll be back
For me it's a lack of explanation in most of the builds. JF's build has a detailed changelog togeather with the build and that's the main reason I chouse that one.
I love Haykuro's roms ..... I was on JC RC9 before Hayuro came on the scene ....
Then last night I tried JF's 1.5 and I just didn't like it, I found it much slower and laggy to a point that I had to re-boot.
Back on 1.5Hr3 now .... with Apps 2 SD and it's perfect for me.
Props to all the devs.
I'm useing jf. I never used the others although I may try one of theme at some point. Honestly I kind of liked only haveing one main rom to chose from it made themeing easyer. But maybe that will change. But just want to say thanx to all the rom sages for there epic work. Each one of you has helped in same way the the g1 better
too early to tell
The problem with these polls is that the ROMs are changing too fast for the info to be of much use. For example, I've had great luck with Haykuro's and the Dude's builds but had a problem installing Haykuro 1.5H (for reasons unknown it sent me into a boot loop) and decided to try out the JF ADP 1.50 for awhile before giving Haykuro's 1.5 another try. Since then, Dude has modified at least one of his builds, and probably more than once, so I don't know what they might have to offer now. The only ROM that I'm reasonably sure that I know what it still does is the HTC ADP 1.5, which has presumably not changed since HTC posted it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, but the modded G1 forums are embroiled in ecstatic chaos at the moment.
tried jf for two days and finally decided to go back to the old 5.0.2H build. the adp builds may be faster and stabler, but not really as pretty and usable. the camera app is adp is just shockingly useless. latin ime may be smaller, but seems way too primitive. multi-touch may be a nice thing to have, but not really that useful.
I love any ROMs from JF because He will not release it until it's really stable and usable can't wait for the official update from t-mobile
Haykuro FTMFW!
Please stay this thread up...
I'm using jf 1.5 with apps on SD. I really like the fact that most of the newer roms are using apps on sd as a standard, now (easy to set up, easy to undo).
The main reason I like JF roms is because they seem to be pretty stripped down & basic. I don't really have any use for the extra gadgets & whatnot. I want fast, stable, and rooted... I get that with jf. I haven't tried dude yet, but I might soon, as I'm hearing great things about it! I was using haykuro's 5.0.2h for a while, but went back to rc33 since (at that time) 5.0.2h had stability issues, and a lot of apps weren't designed for 1.5 yet. I really liked haykuro's build, aside from that (which was not his fault, it was a problem with the individual apps). I love the fact that we have so many options to choose from, and I wouldn't want anyone to stop hacking & developing android!
I know that things like "best" and "better" aren't rweally constructive, and I appreciate this poll because of what it accomplishes, but I must admit that it would be extremely helpful to have some sort of table/database/list of features & differences in the builds. They are all fantastic, but some features suit some better than others, and the ability to look at those features, and make an educated decision would be awesome!
Thank you to all of the devs working to make android better! You are awesome!!!
Just my 2 cents...
Haykuro's 1.5Hr3 FTW. Tried moving to the JF build and had to flash back about an hour later because it was going significantly slower than Haykuro's and a lot more apps were crashing. After flashing back to Haykuro's everything went back to being fast and working perfectly
I've been toying aroud with moving over to Haykuro's 1.5Hr3 too but for now im happy with JFs 1.50 and ill stick with it in the meantime
Either way my hats off to all the 1.5 Devs out there churning this stuff out for us

What's your full time OS, Winmo or Android?

Just trying to get a rough order of magnititude on the adoption of Android as an everyday OS for our Touch Vogues aka Touchdroids
I personally have been using for months now, non-stop, all day, I can't get enough!
But seriously, I figured that if more people knew that others were using it full time then we may have more adopters, developers and contributors.
+1 for full time touchdroid
I use the regular Ion build, Hero is too slow
lately ive been testing about every new hero build fresh out of the oven it is steadily improving in speed
Another touchdroid user here! Been using mssmison's Hero-themed version of Cupcake and loooooving it.
i went back to winmo 6.5 for now. i will be buying a sprint hero pcc by november.
The more I stay, the more I don't want to go back
I love my WinMo setup on NFSFAN's 6.5 with SPB MS 3 and such...but Android is fast becoming my full time OS. If someone gets bluetooth working, I am sold for full time use.
I think Android is basically what WinMo could/should be if they ever get an app store that can compete.

I'm using the remapped zImage. It might just save my volume slider. Android all the way. WinMo 6.5 sometimes when I need bluetooth which is hardly ever.
I'm using Hero, with my own zImage of course
I haven't had much issue with speed...but I've never used the other builds very much to compare them. Are they really that much faster?
I used Android everyday for about a month, then I switched to NFSFan's WM6.5 for awhile, and when I tried using the latest releases of Android, I kept having problem after problem. I never gave up, though, and I'm not using the August 6th build of Android Ion, and I have been running it for 2 straight days with no soft reset. I'm very happy with this build. No apps force closing on me, compact QWERTY works, I'm lovin it.
I voted WinMo but I have Android on my SD card and use it from time to time but mainly as an example of WinMo greatness (In that I can run an iPhone interface, WM, and Android). I still like WM the best.
can't stop switching between 1.5 and hero. the eye candy with hero is nice, but it's really the facebook integration i find hard to live without.

Best mod for htc dream?

Hi guys,
im trying to get my phone jtaged so i can finally have it rooted. are there any suggestions on the best mod to use for the g1? i know we have limited memeory and i beleive we cant even run 2.0 or 2.1 on the phone is that correct?
THanks!
does this mean we get 2.1!!!
Posted by Cyanogen in Home on May 21, 2010
A whole bunch of us have been working hard to get Android 2.1 (CM 5.0.7) running perfect on the HTC Dream and Magic phones and I think it’s nearly ready to go. This release is almost exactly the same as the Nexus One and Droid versions of CM now, minus a few of the heavier apps.
This was an incredible community effort and I hope everyone likes the result. Breathing new life into old hardware is always awesome.
I expect that a stable release of 5.0.7 should be ready for all devices in the next few days.
And after that.. Google has confirmed that Android 2.2 (FroYo) will be available for ION phones, so it’s guaranteed that CM-6 will continue to support the G1 also when the source code hits AOSP.
Cyanogen 5.0.7test7 runs pretty sweetly on my G1 and its based on 2.1
does it lag at all? are there any limitations that i should know of
I find it ok with comcache enabled, around the same speed (if not a little quicker) then the stable based on 1.6.
It is still a "test / experimental" build though, so proceed at your own risk etc...

Running the Rom on my signature which is CyanogenMod5, latest version themed and tweaked. It is a 2.1 and is running very fast/stable so far. Major downside is the battery life however and is a bit hard to get used to vs. a 1.6 Donut Rom.
In all honesty Id say you try SuperD v1.11 (Best Donut Rom in my opinion) first and then flash the Eclair Roms later on. Sooner or later I am sure a developer will improve the battery degradation problem on the 2.1's.

And what, might I ask, is a "g1"?
This phone you speak of is an HTC phone called "DREAM".

That statement is absurd. EVERYTHING has limited memory. Unlimited memory is by definition IMPOSSIBLE, even the smallest memory component possible would consume more than the total available space in the universe to produce unlimited/infinite memory. In fact, it would consume the space consumed by INFINITE UNIVERSES. Inconceivably huge, eh?

And just where did you come up with this nonsense? Do you realize that all the chicken littles in the world will always say "your old hardware will never see this!" -- fact is that this is NOT WINDOZE!! Just because windoze phones don't get to see the newer versions does NOT mean that WE won't get to see our newer versions.
**** this guy is annoying with this rooting ****...

Senseless roms really arent... are they

So, coming from a string of G1's and a Nexus, I cannot stand SenseUi. At ALL. I can live with the widgets and launcher- they are actually tolerable- what I cant accept are the keyboard, the way contacts are brought up, the lack of cut/paste in several areas, and all the frilly crud that goes along with it. I seek a TRUE vanilla rom, based on Android components not HTC. People constantly recommend using advanced launcher or one similar, but these are just launchers- they dont change the stuff back to stock that I seek. So my question is, can there ever be a REAL vanilla rom that has none of the Sense components? Is it possible to de-theme these areas in similar fashion to how the current de-sensing works, or would it require that HTC releases a vanilla version (which they never will). I guess I am asking, am I fighting a loosing battle?
You are coming from an N1 and asking this question?
Really?
Cyanogenmod ring a bell?
i was in the same boat as you. i am on cyanogen now, however there are a few issues with this port. on the nexus i didn't ever have any issues with cm6 but on the incredible you have to install another kernel after you install cm6 so that the camera will work, the camcorder just doesn't work yet, and when i have wifi on i get a reboot about once a day. i live with it because like you i hate sense ui but i wish they would have released a n1 for verizon. they did just release the source code for 2.6.32 which is froyo today, so the code shoulod be added into the nightlies of cm6 shortly.
It's been said that the latest radio fixes many (if not all) of those problems in Cyanogen on DInc. I can't attest to this being true or not, but some people were talking about it last night in the "Unrevoked - Forever" thread in the dev section.
cool! so there is hope. I figured the CM rom would be truly vanilla, but since it had so many little oddities I haven't given it a go yet. Good to know there is the possibility. Thanks guys

The new .32 kernel source that was just released will also allow koush to finish CM6 for the incredible. Basically now that this new kernel is out the bluetooth stack and everything else including the camcorder not working in CM6 will all work once implemented.
Even though the bluetooth works perfect in CM6 unlike normal senseui roms. /letting out BT steam

I wonder when this will be ready?

Gingerbread is so fast compare to Froyo, you would not believe it?
But Gingerbread has no sense (except sense theme from Mccm), has no Internet passthrough and some apps do not work with it. SPBTV 2.0 is an example for me.
This is my point of view.
I will never come back to Froyo.
I am Magldr, WP7, Mccm GB v2.1. THE BEST!
Why there is NO CLEAN SD/MAGLDR BUILDS of Gingerbread, without sense, CM mod etc...? Each avaliable 2.3 build is customized and very unoriginal Hope the situation will change...

check out AmeriCanAndroid.
it's a SD build, clean, based on CM7 Gingerbread, 2.3.3 to be specific. And is natively built as a Leo, not another device as is common amongst HD2 builds.

Well in my experience, Gingerbread is extremely fast, true, but Froyo is not bad and very stable. The best i tried for froyo was
[Dec 10][SD] NexusHD2-FRG83D V1.8 (PPP + RMNET) [Kernel: hastarin r8.5.3_oldcam], and i got very used to it, all my apps works well and fast enough. gaming (emulators, ps snes genesis n64...), all programs (social, productivity, work...) basically all the apps. My first real jump to gingerbread after many hesitation due to reading the forums was a month ago i tried with CM7 then another stock like (can't remember which one , sorry!), lots of hiccups and incompatible with many apps I loved and can't live without, don't get me wrong they were good but, from my point of view, coming from all the goodies in froyo did not beat the speed gingerbread offered. So i went back to froyo again using [DL Desire v4.32][Sense Re-Engineering with RAM][Always FASTER], which is blazing fast but lags some times (best quadrant score i've seen in all roms i've tested).
So my 2 cents is that it really depends on the user. I would absolutely go 100% gingerbread with AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2 GB233 CM7|bkup2sdext234 [KERNEL:AmCanAndroid r3.06], because this is the best I have tested very fast stable and all that you can get from gingerbread on your HD2, however not compatible with my favorite apps. So until I can work around those, Froyo is still my best option and there are very decent one out there with good tweaking options (setCPU...). Choices choices Gingerbread vs Froyo means to me Speed vs Compatibility, hopefully we can get best of both world soon.
NB: I am talking about SD only, no MAGDLR or Ram as I have seen no real difference running SD or Ram in terms of speed or battery or at least not very noticeable, So I like to keep my WM around just in case since i tend to go crazy on all the options offered so in case of android crash and urgency i can boot back and respond fast on my weak but trusty WM.

Try [27.FEB][DFT/CWM] NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.3 [Android2.3.2][Kernel: tytung_r6]. Clean, fast ROM without any extras
I bought my hd2 on ebay and had to flash it back to 6.5 because of a password problem. I really like my phone but I did like the android. I have been reading hundreds of pages and there is just too much information to get through.
I would like to put android back on my phone but how do you figure out which version is the best? For me it needs to be simple. I am an old lady. I want to put it on and never have to mess with it again. Will some nice person help this old lady across the street.

The only way to truely tell which rom is the best one for you is if you test them out yourself. We can tell you which one works best for us but it won't really do any good.
Check out the thread below it breaks it down to different types of android roms..

Hi I'd advise you to have a look at darkstones SD roms particularly the sense-less build (I'll edit post with link and name later, I forget it now).
It's very fast, simple to set up. I have been using it ever since I first tried it, about 6 weeks ago. Rock solid and very clean and lovely to use it's well worth a look.

Froyo 2.2 with Sense (ALOT LIKE 6.5 ONLY ANDROID)
