MicroUSB is it universal? - HD2 General

Now that all mobiles (i guess) will use this standard, does it mean I can use any microUSB charger with any mobile? (same for data cable)??
For example, I have HD2 and I also have Plantronic Voyager Pro BT headset which uses microUSB for charging. Can I charge my HD2 with the Plantronics charger (or the opposite)??
same question for car charger??
That would really make life a lot easier!!

That's the idea, yes.
However, having a proper connector is one thing, being able to charge a device is another. You'll need to look at the Amp rating on your charger, it has to be able to provide 1A (1000mA) or more to be an effective charger. Otherwise it may not have enough power to simultaneously charge your battery and power the device. Nothing bad should happen, so you can definitely try. Just be aware that it may not work properly.
You can definitely use a higher-power charger like the one that came with HD2 for lower-power devices like the BT headset. That will certainly work.

Is it correct that this receiver doesn't operate while being charged?
Mines only seems to work while on battery - as soon as I plig in the charger, it goes off.

Hi Shogunmark,
Hi Shogunmark,

Keep an eye on this thread. I have just charged my 236 up so need to let it run out of juice.
I'll post a result when I get to test it.
Just tried with my old Nokia battery.
With the mains charger plugged in, the unit is operating as normal.
Hope that helps.
Mine works fine whilst charging

I have to add to my posts that when I recieved mine (without plug adapters) I tried my charger in a 2pin - 3pin adapter and the charger wouldnt work.
I plugged it directly into the 3 pin socket and it is fine. Obviously the adapter wasnt making the correct contacts.
Just as a silly question, your charger is illuminating and the green charge light on the GPS is on isn't it??
I know some suppliers of these send the adapters out with them.
Holux 236 Slim
I have the Holux 236 Slim and the GPS works fine while plugged into the chargers that came with it (both A/C and car). It will not operate with other USB chargers however. It behaves just like you said. It charges while the GPS is switched off, but does not operate with either an A/C adapter or car charger from another device (like my Cingular 8125).
Also the cable that came with the A/C adapter looks like any other USB to mini-5 USB (in fact I have used it as one for my Cingular 8125), but it will not work as a USB cable with the Holux to connect it to my laptop as a USB GPS. Holux says you have to buy their special USB cable to make that work.
You may have a bad one. Mine works both ways.

I am afraid that may be the case my friends.
May be an idea to phone Holux if you havent already done so.
I need an extra car charger for my 236 and have tried universal ones. These don't work unless the 236 is switched off, because the 236 mini usb is somehow differant. I think when you plug in a universal car charger in the 236 it goes into mouse mode & switches off bluetooth.I did notice that if you only touched the mini usb ends together it worked ok.plugged all the way in no. I needed to hard reset to get it working . I have contacted holux Europe to see if i can buy an extra Holux car charger. Very annoying!
Echoing what others have said, universal chargers don't work. I've tried as well. Using the supplied car charger though, never a problem. I've used it on numerous long road trips, powered on and plugged in with the supplied charger without issue. Forgot it on one trip, and experienced the same concerns as others: didn't charge whilst on on a universal charger.
And, just in case the OP is interested, I'm using Mapopolis with mine.
That may be it then - I haven't tried it with that car charger that came with it, I was having the problem while charging it with my O2 XDA Mini's charger (same connection).
Why on Earth would that be though?

No offence, but it comes with a mains charger also. Why would you not use that??
Checking the details on them both, they both are 5vdc at 1 amp.
Just going by the connection being the same doesn't necessarily mean that the output voltages are the same.
I have a standard cigarette lighter in my lorry, only problem is, its a 24v connection and would oblitorate any 12v equipment in a split second. But it looks the same !!!
I dont mean to flame you, but if a charger is supplied with something, then why on earth not use it? After all, thats what its there for.

Why on Earth would I want to use up 2 plug sockets in my 4-way adaptor for 2 charges that are the same? (one for my phone and one for my GPS receiver).
Since either charger will charge either device, why not just have 1 plugged in, since I'll never actually need to charge both at the same time while in the house?

As I said, I wasnt trying to flame you and your point is taken but the whole purpose of this thread was to ask why it ISN'T doing what you thought it should, even though it charges. (As it should), LOL
If that makes sense, LOL
Ok then looking at the same point but from the other side, will the Holux charger charge the Wizard as it should??

Charging: Power Lead - 580mA vs 1.0A

Hi
The charger that came with my HTC P3600 says 5V, 1A. However most of my other miniUSB chargers which I use with a I-mate JAMin & K-JAM say 580mA or 500mA. I also have some adapters for the HTC P3600 which would allow me to plug in one of these miniUSB chargers. The question is should I? Would it make any difference? In case you're wondering why I would want to do this, its because I have a charger at work, home, girlfriends, in the car etc. And I would rather have a few adapters than shell out for loads more chargers. Thanks for listening!
Well, the Amp on your charger is how much Juice it can deliver.
So as far as I can guess you would have 2 scenarios, 1 is it will work but it will charge your HTC slower, or second option is that the charger will overheat.

Car Charger Question

Does anybody know what the power output specification for car charging is for the Tilt? The wall charger puts out 5v and 1mA, but I haven't figured out what car charger is necessary. Internet sites all list different outputs including the 5v and 550mA which is the same for the Razr.
I don't want to use one that will damage the phone. Will the 550mA work but just not as fast, or can it damage the phone?
I have been trying to read other posts on this subject, but none are conclusive.
I just bought a car mount but it came with the 550mA charger and they are giving me a hard time about it.
I also notice that the usb port which charges the phone only puts out a maximum of 500mA. I just don't know much about electrical stuff and I am hoping to get some insight from you all.
All I know is that I am using Moto chargers for my phone and they're working.
I use Moto chargers and they work fine, just not as fast.
Thanks guys.

Full Charge or trickle?

Is there any way to see if the unit is being fast or slow charged? It seems that the HTC charger uses an extra pin on the charger to enable fast charging and that MAY be why some aftermarket chargers (wall and car) do not seem to keep up with the battery discharge when running even if their plugged into a charger with sufficiant current capability. The HTC Wall caheger is rated as a 1 Amp charger. I have other chargers that use an external USB cable to connect, both rated as 1.5Amp (1500mA) chargers but seem to charge very slow. Soooooo I'm looking for the difference between the HTC charger and the aftemarket ones to see if I can make the ones I have work properly.
Thanks for any help
joe
<edit> in Looking at the Mini USB spec I find 5 pins labeled 1-2-3-x-4 with 1being VCC (5v), 2 & 3 being Data + & - and 4 being Gnd. Does the Advantage use the X pin to enable fast charging? How? Does it provide a second 5v line to cause/enable the Advantage to fastcharge? I think I need to look at the wall charger mini USB pinouts.
After talking to Pocket PC Techs and looking around online, it looks like the x-pin (next to pin 4(gnd)) is shorted to pin 4 to provide the advantage with a sense line to tell it to fast charge. The also shuts off the data lines in the unit AFAICT. Still don't know what the current capability of "Fast Charge" is or how to ask the unit to query the port for status. USB ports are generaly limited to 500ma and the stock charger is 1000ma (1A) so it seems that to ensure the MAX charge, the cable connected needs to have the x pin and pin 4 shorted. This is usefull if you are NOT wanting to do a data transfer (car GPS, stand alone charging, etc).
Here is a link to the connector http://pinouts.ru/PDA/pda_miniusb_pinout.shtml
Anyone can add to this?
Joe
I just received the Lil Sync DUO Mini-5 Adapter from PPC tech and it works perfectly. I'm now getting a fast charge from my PC (no sync) and I'm able to charge my S705 bluetooth headset.
Interesting news on the pinouts. I've never heard of any utility that shows fast vs. slow charge.
I wonder if anyone has a utility that can sense a gnd on the x pin (next to gnd) of the input connector. Does anyone have a schematic of the advantage side of the input power/data connector. It would me that there might be a pullup on that line sothe unit see's it as a high untill pulled low by a ground applied tothe x pin.
here you have "hot to do it"

Car Chargers Compatibility

Done a brief search on here and cannot find the answer to my question.
I have a standard car charger which I used with my my XDA Orbit (Artemis) - i'm presuming I can use this with the Touch HD? Just that I read that the connector is slightly different on the THD....
I'm also quite tempted to get one of these CC-C100 models with the HTC logo at the top (i'm not vein, honest ). Would these would work too?
May sound like a stupid question with an obvious answer, as I know they all have the generic mini-USB connector, but just wanted clarification.
Thanks
I was wondering the same.
I picked up somewhere that the normally unused B pin of the 5 pin mini USB needs to be connected to ground to enable 2Amp charging. Othewise it may max out at 500mA. So many of the chargers sold as HTC compatible will work but will not charge full rate.
The nice one with the HTC logo do have a ExtUSB connector and are rated for 2000mA so should work full charge. I am waiting for my eBay order to come in to validate.
Any miniusb car charger should work. I bought a satnav car charger and it works fine.
