Hello all,
So I've been digging through the site for a week or so before i made the plunge to Root my stock Magic. I bought at v1.5, updated to 1.6 (before I new I wanted to Root). I have since gone back to 1.5, created back up with Cyanogen, Flashed, Wiped and am now at the point where Im trying to load my new Rom (Cyanogen's latest) via update.zip.
Problem is, Im using a mac so there is no zip extension by default. I add the extention, plug the SD into my phone, boot to recovery and attempt to install but I fails displaying: "E:Can't access open/sdcard/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted"
Any idea's? I've seen a couple recommenations to rename minus "zip" or reformat the SD card. None of which have helped. Im currently sitting at v1.5 rejecting the Tmobile 1.6 system update messages a couple times an hour!!! *sigh*
if your using a recent recovery rom you should have choose zip option
so just download cy rom leave name as is then put in root of sd boot to recovery and choose zip

Thanks for you response.
I am using CyanogenMod v1.4 Recovery. I have the option to "apply any zip from SD" but nothing is displayed in the list unless its named "update.zip" I had other files on the card that don't show up. In fact, Cyanogen's last update links to a Wiki that doesn't even instruct you to rename the new Rom's to 'update' but again, my SD doesnt display them.
Is the zip on the root of your card? You should probably redownload the CM rom and put that one you redownloaded on your sdcard without renaming it or anything. That might work.
how do you copy the file across
phone in recovery mode or phone fully booted
if the first you will need to reboot back to recovery after you copied it accross to show
you could fully format your card fat32 if your using cy rom mount sd card and copy just the cy rom across to the card remember to backup card first

I tried 2 options. 1)Fully booted via usb into the card and 2)removing card and mounting via a Card Reader to my Mac. In both cases I booted to Recovery Mode on the phone and had the same result.
As far as formating the card, its not stock, its an 8 gig that I formated via the phone's erase/format function. Is that not sufficient?
In regards to cy's ROM Im not able to access it after I backup with the apk i have (never get the "Load Custom Rom" button, which is why im using cynoagens.

I'm assuming the quoted statement above is still true. I flash via a Mac all the time, so here's what I would do if I were you.
Have the phone booted into your standard ROM.
Plug in the USB cable.
Pull the top menu down on your phone and choose Mount USB.
You should see a new volume in Finder on your Mac (Mine is called no name)
Put the TWO files required for Cyanogenmod on the root of that volume (one of the files is called HTCRootedBase something or other.zip and the other is Cyanogen's actual changes)
Power off the phone after the file copy is complete.
Unplug the USB.
Reboot into recovery by holding the Home&Power button.
Choose apply any zip
Select the HTCRootedBase file first.
Let it do its thing.
When it says "Install from SD complete", run apply any zip again.
Choose the Cyanogen zip file.
When it says "Install from SD complete", reboot the phone.
Be PATIENT. It may take 5 minutes for the phone to reboot, but as soon as you see the blue Android logo with the guy on the skateboard you can start doing the happy dance.

can you try another sd card
Ok, problem solved! It seems my Mac was not correctly downloading the files in the zip format even though i was manually changing the extention. Luckily i have Parallels so I downloaded via XP and added the correct zip files to my sd from there and success! Thanks for all your help!!!

Well, you can try putting your SD card in for example another phone, digital camera or something similar..
Stupid me...
You can mount SD card via clockwork!!
Yust go to mounts and there is option to mount an SD card, and than connect the Streak to the PC and it will be recognized as Removable media
edit:
if that doesn't work, flash via fastboot new recovery from mistamadman here in this forum offcourse.. There must be an option in his recovery
not sure why this is posted to development...
but:
If you can get into Recovery you can mount your SD card to your computer via USB. Then transfer the file over that way and install ZIP from SD. Your Fastboot update method is incorrect.
I just verified with StreakMod recovery that you can in fact "mount sd card via PC" under the advanced menu.
So, if you are able to fastboot, flash StreakMod recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840326
Unzip and flash with: fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.img
Reboot with: fastboot -i 0x413c reboot
Hold down the keys "volume up" and "volume down" simultaneously while rebooting.
Select "Software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD Card" in the menu
At the Dell Logo press the power button and you will be presented with the Recovery Menu

ok, i was running 2.3.3 on my ns and finally got it unlocked then i decided to go for it and root it. my biggest mistake was not backing up anything after the unlock and then when i was rooting the phone it got stuck in the google screen
now i can get to the bootload screen but when i go to update from sd; it takes me there but i have nothing to back it up from
ive been trying to figure out a way to load a recovery backup to sd but the pc will not read the sd card anymore...
how can i fix this or am i stuck with an expensive paper weight?
please help
Question: Do you have clockworkmod on it?
(I figure you unocked and roote via adb/Fastboot - but if you can do it some other way and you did here they are]
Get ADB and Fastboot - figure out how the commands work (from Terminal/console/Command Prompt).
U need to put the files u want to flash (*.imgs in the same place as fastboot/ADB unless you're good a remembering your paths, if you have OS X simply drag and drop commands and files into terminal)
See if you can find a clockwork recovery image,
Download a stock rom - report back
Basically:
fastboot flash boot example.img
Fastboot flash recover example-recovery.img
that should work. I'll keep an eye on this thread.
After flashing CWR, go to mounts and storage and select mount USB storage, from there you can access your sdcard and copy files over.
The USB storage might take a minute or so to show up on your computer, if you're on windows go to my computer and click refresh until it shows up.

Here are the steps to get your phone back up and working:
1.Download this platform-tools.zip and extract it to your desktop
2.Connect your phone to the PC and enter bootloader mode
3.Press and hold Shift while right-clicking the folder you extracted 'platform-tools'
4.Click 'Open command window here' from the pop-up menu. cmd.exe window will open.
5.If the Bootloader is Unlocked continue to the next step. Type in the cmd.exe window 'Fastboot oem unlock' and follow the steps on the phone screen.
6.Type in the cmd.exe window 'fastboot boot cwr.img'.Your phone will restart and enter ClockWork recovery(CWR).
6.In CWR navigate with the volume keys and highlight 'mounts and storage' and select it by pressing the power button.
7.Then navigate down and select 'mount USB Storage'
8.On your PC, go to 'My computer' and press the refresh button until a 'removable disk' drive appears.
9.Double click on 'removable disk', You now have access to your SDcard on your phone!
10.Copy over a flashable .Zip Rom to the SDcard that you want to install on your phone, ie. Stock 2.3.4: Link(only for i9020T and i9023, dont install if you have i9020A), CM7: Link, etc.
11.Select 'unmount' in CWR when done copying files over. Then 'Go Back' to go to the CWR main menu.
12.Select 'wipe data/factory reset' in CWR and confirm with 'yes'
13.Select 'install zip from sdcard', then select 'choose zip from sdcard', then select the zip file you want to install and confirm.
14.Wait until the Rom installation is complete, then 'select reboot system now'.
15.Your phone will reboot and be up and running! Custom Roms tend to take longer to boot so be patient.
Let me know what happens.

yes, i can access clockwork mod also, but it the usb storage wont show up.....
Follow these instructions:
1. Slap self in head.
2. Power on phone while holding volume up&power button.
3. Now on the pc, Get the fastboot folder to the root of hard drive, I.E. C:\fastboot\. Also add to this folder your *.img files (radio, recovery, boot, system, data, etc.)
4. Open start menu.
5. In search box type cmd and press enter.
6. Now command window is open, type in that
cd C:\fastboot
fastboot flash * *.img
Replace the * with appropriate .imgs.
recovery, system, data, boot, radio.
Example
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
7. Now that that is finished type
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot
8. Now the phone will reboot. BE PATIENT AS THIS MAY TAKE UP TO TEN MINUTES TO FULLY REBOOT INTO ANDROID!!! Disturbing it in anyway can cause corruption. I had this happen to my phone before. Literally walk away and come back in ten. Don't touch it, don't breath on it nothing. If you have any further problems either post here or PM me. Getting the .img files and fastboot is up to you. By the previous replies you should have them already.

I think I had the same problem. first you need to check if your pc has the correct driver to accept the nexus s in bootloader mode. when that is done and you have colckword mod , you can but a custom rom on the sd card and flash that, then you'll be able to use your phone again.
Malfunction " x " appears on the screen !! help me what is going on
Haha... you'll need more information than that if you want real help.
Based on the limited information though I suspect your phone is stuck in a bootloop. I'd hook it up to the PC via USB and check the logcat. Probably something screwed up.. Maybe time to restore your latest backup.
Did you flash any ROM if so, did you clean your Dalvic+REgular Cache
If you don't have an Recovery:
- Connect your Micro SD on PC
- Download and insert on SD the stock ROM of your Nexus One
- Power ON your Nexus with Volume Down Pressed.
- Autmotically Restore Nexus (You should say Yes xD)
At this time, you decide if you want to be root and install other ROM
you better just list your setup info before doing anything
locked/unlocked bootloader
rooted/unrooted
which recovery are you using
what rom are you running stock/custom
what were you doing when this happened
a couple safe things you can do in meantime is to pull battery and reinsert and power on
if it goes back to X, pull battery and DO NOT power on. Hold down the pwr button and trackball at same time and see if you can get into recovery
the third is hold down trackball/vol-/power at same time while X is on screen and see if you can get to recovery that way
if you can't get to recovery you will need to fastboot new recovery, assuming you are unlocked
once you get into recovery do a nandroid if you are rooted
and copy it to pc as a secondary backup
it is possible you may need to try the passimg method in wiki
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Nexus_One/Guides_&_Tutorials#Unroot_.2F_Restore_your_Nexus
also to do fastboot commands you need usb debugging selected on phone--hope it is
Hello, i have a similar problem with my n1
the phone starts and just shows the nexus X - (waited for 15 min. nothing happend)
i can go to the bootloader / fastboot menu with PWR + (Vol-) but i can not go to the recovery mode. -> the phone reboots and get stuck at the X
the phone is rooted
blackrose / hboot 7.35.5017
radio 5.12.00.08
recovery was ext4
i had a german ics miui rom installed and tryed to install the latest ics miui us rom after it didn't booted the miui us rom i turned the phone off and tryed a few hours later to turn it on to reflash the german ics miui rom.
1.)
i tryed to install a new recovery image ->
recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-passion &
recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1
(still get stuck at the X if i try to go to recovery mode)
2.)
i tryed this one with the passimg.zip but nothing happens if i put in the sd card :/
(with nothing i mean the green text show that the sd card is checking for PASSDIAG.zip and PASSIMG.zip but dosn't found it)
i also tryed:
3.)
erased boot
flash boot from passimg.zip (PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_2.18.1700.1_FRG83_release_signed)
4.)
erased cache
erased userdata
started again with 1.)
5.)
got frustrated and erased system -.-
any ideas?
study it ,thank you
study it ,thank you
Hmm, sorry if its obvious but i have no idea what it could be or what i have to search to find the solution. Would be nice if you could give me a hint. Of course im not asking for a step by step solution. Thank you.
Send from my awesome SE K800i
not sure why you are flashing boot images
do you have a nandroid--copy your sdcard with the nandroid to pc--all of sdcard
are you flashing thru fastboot in command window
did you read my post above on getting to the fastboot screen--can you do that--the one with the 3 androids
pwr/vol-/trackball same time, may take 20-30 seconds
if you can get there, put your recovery image in your fastboot folder on pc, normally tools--assuming you have sdk installed, your phone must have usb debugging checked--I hope
open a command window and change directory to the tools folder or wherever the fastboot.exe file is. Something like:
cd/
cd/ android/android-sdk-windows/tools for me
then on same line type
fastboot devices (it should show your phone H#)
fastboot erase system
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (or the exact name of the recovery image, checked by right clicking on the img file in your tools folder and looking under properties)
I would use amonra you listed above and check the md5 if possible
hopefully the recovery will flash
if not you can go to the wiki link i posted above and try passimg metthod from there, use correct one. don't add the .zip. Windows will had it automatically.
a side note, DON"T flash different roms without wiping all including System 3 times before flashing--prevents a lot of problems

Hi
I have HTC hero with CWM recovery. I was in recovery and mounted the sd card, copied few files from sd-card to comp and then on the phone I just clicked back button then realised I should have Unmounted that, having done that on the next reboot it gave me an error to remove the card and insert it, I realised something is wrong so went back into the recovery and tried mounting it but it gave me the error - "unable to write to ums Lunfile".
I dont know what to do now, the card is 8GB and dont have any other card, everything was working fine prior to this.
Plug the card into your PC and format it
sorry mate, that did not work, I also used another 2GB card, formated but that does not work as well.
Using 2GB and going into CWM recovery, while mounting it still gives the same msg?
I also checked that 8GB card putting into the card reader and using it on Win-7, the card shows fine, it is showing that Fat32 partition, obviously it is not going to show me Linux partitions.
So the point is how am I going to use that 8GB card back into my HTC hero?
should I flash CWM again on the phone? will that work?
But the phone does not recognise any sdcard so I cannot flash as well..??
what to do?

My friend you didnt get it.
My sdcard itself is not recognised by the recovery, so obviously even if I put it on the sdcard, the card itself is not recognised so I cannot use it.
Thats why I asked if it would be possible to put xxxxxx.IMG file through FASTBOOT and if anyone can advise if that would work?
Else as I already have CWM 5.xx can I replace it with recovery-RA-hero-1.7xx.IMG file? will that solve the problem?

No I am S-ON
will that be a problem?
suddenly now adb has stopped working.
what a day begins man
could you please give me the step by step commands to flash amonra.img please..
Can you boot into your ROM ? Does your ROM "see" your SD card. If both of these questions answer yes then do this. Mount your SDCard in your ROM and copy amonra.img to it. Then do
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
flash_image recovery /sdcard/amonra.img or flash_image recovery /mnt/sdcard/amonra.img
exit
adb reboot recovery
Hopefully it should go ok, if you get some errors copy output here and i'll help
I can boot into ROM but it cannot see the sdcard?
Now no matter what I do the "adb" doesnt see the devices as well -
I treid
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb devices
and it says no devices found
I tried going in fastboot mode and then also adb does not see my device.
it has gone to a stage - helpless

:S This is weird... It sure would help if you were S-OFF but now since no SDCard or ADB this is gonna be a tough fix. Only think i see posible is to get ROM Manager from market and flash CWM recovery from there, i think that ROM Manager will flash version 2.x.x.x
i checked that, there is no market on the phone now as everything was app2sd, market is gone as well
I have Ubuntu on one machine, it was there just for some trial and learning purpose
would anything help with that
Are you sure your USB cable is OK ? No device found is almost 100% bad cable connection, do you have a spare USB
My cable is ok, i have a spare one as well, tried that , same thing, adb doesnt find anything.
I also installed android sdk20 on another pc (64bit) and that doesnt recognise phone in recovery as well..
even while connected, it doesnt even show new drivers installing or nothing..
Hey,
For starters, xda has been VERY VERY helpful to me over the past few months and I thank everyone who has ever contributed to a question or a discussion I have read.
I have a google nexus 4, and i managed to format the whole phone while i was installing a new rom. Now i can boot into bootloader and CWM but there is no files on the /sdcard/ there so that i can flash the phone
I tried to use the feature "adb push", but it´s not permited as i cannot enable the USB debugging...
I tried these guidelines: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754018 but they didn´t help.
My phone info is:
Fastboot Mode
Product_Name: mako
HW Version: rev_11
Bootloader_version: makoz101
Signing - Production
Secure boot - enabled
Look state: Unlocked
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
Thank You

You cannot currently mount SD from recovery. Use adb to push the files you want to flash to your SD, then flash them in recovery.
adb push romname.zip /sdcard/

I have tried many methods from the general section, any particular thread do you think is most helpful?

Fatboot = Bootloader, yup! I would read this thread for detailed information.

If you are not so comfortable with about, you can try out Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit (a bit riskier though) that I have used a couple of times to restore factory images, works fine.

You could connect the phone to a PC and use CWM to mount the SD card. Copy a CWM flashable rom (99% of custom roms) to the SD card, disconnect from the PC and use CWM to flash. Job done

This is the most simple way if you have CWM recovery.
Fixed!
Had the same problem just now and it scared the heck out of me.
Solved it by doing the following (Did this using ClockWorkMod Recovery 6.0.2.3 so some steps may be different from yours)
Boot to recovery
Connect your device to PC
Download and extract this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996051
Go to device manager and see that your device has the ! sign
Install the drivers you just downloaded to your device
Rename your rom to update.zip and copy it to where your adb is located
Your device should now be detected by adb so type this - adb push update.zip /sdcard/
In your device, go to install from SD card > apply /sdcard/update.zip
DONE!
Thanks man
I just tried this in boot loader, then i got this error:
http://awesomescreenshot.com/0a3ydrw8d
(Device not found)
---
Then i booted into CWM v6.0.1.9 and then the device was found, and it seems like it successfully transfered the file.
http://awesomescreenshot.com/03cydsr1c < which is great, but when i go to "install zip from sdcard" -> "choose zip from sdcard" the screen blinks and at the bottom it says:
- No files found
----
I then formated the sdcard from the advanced menu and retried transfering the files and it worked
Fantastic!!! Jusdavis i can´t thank you enough.
