Question about Hero ROM +Nandroid Cupcake restore.. - myTouch 3G, Magic General

After loading up a Hero ROM, just to try it out, whenever I go back to restore my Cupcake backup (Cyanogen 4.0.4), it fails. Why is this? I backed it up using Amon Ra's 1.2.2, I've flashed several Hero ROMs, mostly Modaco and EVIL's stuff. I like trying out new ROMs, but I only have one phone, I dont have the cash to shell out for a dev phone. so testing's sorta tricky.
Any help? I'm a complete and utter noob, for the record. lol.

Bumpity bump.

Bump, from a long ass time ago.

maybe you have the wrong spl

cant use latest cyanogen mod

I'm trying to get the latest cm (4.2.14.1) working on my g1 but after flashing the rom I have no network or gps (I assume because maps errors out on me). I've tried some older roms as well with 4.2.1 everything seems fine, with 4.2.10 going to setting gives me an error, 4.2.12 leaves me with my phone hanging after cyanogen logo. Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?
I'm using cyanogen 1.4 recovery, hard spl and my radio is *.19.26 (sorry I don't know exactly what the radio is)
When in doubt wipe it out... I had the issue of it hanging like that as well & was able to fix it after wiping.
I gave up on cyanogenmod but found sucess with super donut 1.9.2. But I still have a question, What's the developer 1.6 recovery? Do you just flash once then you got it forever? If not why does cyanogen need it but not super donut?

you don't need cyanogen's. You can use amon ra's with cyanogen rom.

Thank you but that isn't the recovery I was refering to I ment "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip"
The tut I used to setup my phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679) says to flash it prior to the rom and I was wondering why cm needed it but not super-d.
Also I have apps2sd setup now and was wondering two things about it. After wiping and putting a new rom on will all my apps still available? And my internal storage still seems to be shrinking as I install apps why is that if there being put on the sd card? (Sd secondary is shrinking to so I know they are)

[Q] New to android... need some guides to read about rooting and custom roms

i just got my new MT4G ... its my first android phone so im not familiar with the ROMs and customazation around the android community. Im from the MAEMO community. YES, nokia N900 - great phone. We had our times.
i first got the HTC HD7 from tmo... and personally dont like it. so after 4 days of trying it out i exchanged the phone for the MT4G.
now im going hardcore on this... is there a sticky thread that a first android user must know? how do i root this device? can i do a SSH server/client on this phone?
== first thing i want to do with this phone is change the appearance... need some guides... thanks guys.
I'm on the same boat. I'm new to the android community and have been doing massive research and have tweaked the appearance to what I like and want. My next move is to look into rooting my phone but don't even know where to start. There is temp root, perm root, different roms ie cynogen etc......backups.
I believe they have such a thing with a one click root but not sure if its available for the MT4G yet.
Anyone would like to point us to the right direction please do so...Greatly appreciate it.
update:
After reading a couple of post from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
i did manage to turn my MT4G (S=off)
-- question...
*am i already root permanently with this?
*what benifits that i can do now that i rooted my phone?
--problem encountered...
*after rooting aor doing the S=off , i noticed that when i disconect to wifi i have no internet connection... but there is a H sign on my taskbar? weird...
Somewhat new Android user as well, who would also appreciate it if someone took the time to point us in the direction of some nice guides that helped them out in the past.
This looks a like a good thread to jump into; I too am completely new to the android world. Good with computers and software in retrospect but am not sure where to even start with my mt4g. I've seen a lot of things floating around but I don't any junk on my phone, as in; only good solid reliable software.
Check the unlockr.com web site they show u videos and on how to I always wait until every thing us working well for others b 4 I do anything to my new phone good luck

I am also new to all of this for the most part and my only question is how I go about creating a nandroid backup of my phone? I know I need a recovery image or something along those lines (again noob lol) so I'm just curious how to go about getting it, etc. *continues looking*
Just a quick reply (limited time)...
I've had this, my 2nd Android phone (had the Vibrant for a couple of wks before trading when the MT4G came out) for a few wks. You can find all the info you need in the MT4G forums: perm rooting, backups, custom ROMs, etc. READ a lot and you'll learn a lot.
Before perm rooting use Titanium Backup to back up your apps & data, then install ROM Manger, flash Clockwork Recovery, and make a nandriod backup of your stock ROM before attempting perm root. After perm rooting, make another nandriod backup. You'll then be ready to flash a custom ROM, an overclock kernel, etc - whatever you wish. They key is to backup, backup, backup.
ROM Manager is your best friend!
The forums & threads here will tell you how to do everything.

What if we permrooted before making a backup? I have not installed clockwork recovery yet. Would it be better to unroot then use Visionary to Temp root to install Rom Manager then clockwork recovery to do another backup? Then Permroot?
I was under the impression you had to have permroot to install and flash clockwork recovery.
I am a long time user of Windows Mobile, and can't figure out why people fancy Android so much. What exactly is rooting..? I see a ton of threads about how to root/permaroot, but none of them explain the benefits of doing so.

Thanks for reminding me to backup... i forgot about that...
ive been messing with my fone trying diffrent things doing hard core since i permrooted it and forgot to back it up... good thing its still working great.
now i did a backup of the current ROM so guess im on the safe side now (i guess... )
back to playing around with some customizations...
android phones is so addicting in customization. you can do almost anything to it.... im begining to fall in love on android phones.
Root, Guides, and the Like
This is my 3rd Android Device. Root access is available after you get S=off. So good job you have an open device.
The development team had some trouble getting the Glacier (Mytouch4G) and the G2 permanently rooted at first. That's why it's called PERMARoot. Now though both devices are totally opened up.
This forum section is quite new compared to the older devices and it takes time for decent guides, how to videos, ROM guides, etc to start popping up. Eventually they end up like the G1 forums and need to be organized.
Someone will eventually post a ROM wiki with all the updated ROM's that start popping up.
ROM- for lack of a better term is like the Operating System that runs on your PC. Modified to any specs the cook likes.
Cyanogen has always been known for making really good stable ROMs and if you are new to the community his stuff might be where to start.
Root- Is development access to the inner workings of the phone allowing modification to ANYTHING that the phone is capable of.
Hope this helps if you guys need stuff answered just PM me.
And backup is available after you install Clockwork recovery. Then boot into recovery and run a Nandroid backup.
As far as I know AmonRA hasn't made a recovery for the Mytouch4g yet, but his stuff is really good too.
Usually really good how to videos are posted at theunlockr.com
Please post questions in Q&A section.

I'm just starting this process, and usually do everything with the "back up back up back up" philosophy.
I was just about to download "Clockwork Recovery" (which is different than "Clockwork ROM Manager", right?), but it is saying it is for ROOTED devices only? Mine is stock, out of the box, not rooted, so I'm thinking I should be using this??
Sorry for the newb question...
Root basically mean u have complete control of the phone. With that u can put a new rom. For example, the iced rom, its the same rom as a new mt4g minus useless apps. Plus it has a diff kernel whicg allows u to increase or decrease the speed of the cpu. U can't do any of that if ur not at the admin level/root
GOT ICE?

recovery crashes and roms not loading?

ive been trying to back up my current rom with rom manager and everytime its backs up the rom and when it goes to start up again it crashes and the screen goes hay wire. also when i tried to boot the gingerbread roms on my phone it says "installation aborted" then the screen goes hay wire and it just loads up the phone as if nothing happened.
so im not really sure what to do, i was able to load a beta gingerbread the other day and it worked fine but when i went to sample the others i started having problems. hope i didnt break my phone
Having same issue
evo, It's the poop!
Same problem here..but I don't think the evo is poop lol
Its not the evo, its the new clockwork and rom manager. It is seriously screwing up everybody's phone that is using it. If your phone doesn't have the new partitions that are coming out with the latest phones then clockwork won't work properly. The developer needs to pull it from the market before there is revolt. Try to flash aman ra 1.8 and hopefully you will be able to flash again. If you have the hboot 2.02 or 2.10 you need to find the modified aman ra recovery to properly flash.
damn i had a feeling there was something fishy goin on with the plethora of updates they recently had -____- well hopefully they get it fixed cuz this is seriously tickin me off haha. hopefully this doesnt do any damage to my phone tho. i love this thing to death
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894331
how do i get amon_ra on my phone?
I have the new hboot and the new clockwork and it wont flash a lot of zips. Just aborts them. What is the easiest way to get modified amonra and flash it without a computer lol.
evo, It's the poop!
I went up to CWM 3.0.0.0 and ran into tons of issues similar to what you said. I mostly had bootloops and force closes in both AOSP and Sense roms.
I got back to CWM 2.5.1.2 and all is good. Get back to an older version if you can till this gets sorted out.

Can't load custom roms anymore

I hope that this isn't a repost, I've searched quite a bit but nothing is exactly like what i'm experiencing.
Here's what happened, i'll try and make this short and to the point.
Got my new evo, rooted it using unrevoked 3 and got root access.
Loaded a few custom roms, no problem, finally settled on Calkulin's EViO rom. Everything was working great, 4G was perfect, blah blah blah, buddy with an evo told me that Cyanogen was the poo and that I had to flash to that as it was the best ever.
I download Cyanogen 6.1.2 from cyanogen's forum and proceeded to flash it to my phone after doing a nand backup on my current rom. I forgot to back up my RSA keys (didn't even know i had to in the first place) and after cyanogen loaded, I read the thread that states that flashing cyanogen make screw up your wimp key and that you should backup your RSA keys (crap!) before loading cyanogen. Well after reading this and freaking out, I went back into recovery, wiped everything, and loaded the recovery img of the last rom I was running on my evo.
Now my 4G doesn't work in calkulin (posted a thread about that a couple days ago), and I'm not able to load any rooms except for backups, a fresh copy of calkulin, and a fresh copy of cyanogen 6.1.2.
When i try to load a new rom (warm 2.2 for example), it'll load, but when i go and reboot, it'll sit at the white HTC EVO screen forever .. nothing will change until I pull the battery out and start the phone back into recovery. I can reload one of my old backup images and everything works fine again.
I've cleared all the memory, delvik cache, everything. I even formatted my SD card after backing it up and loading just the roms on there. that didn't help either.
Any help would be fantastic .. I'm completely floored as to why I can't load anymore rooms.
Also, i want my wimax back!
wow.. sorry.. i hope someone can help you.
but I would think, you have to call sprint. they may have the wimax info for your phone.. and how to put it back.
for my knownledge... how do you get the information RSA keys and wimax info.. so I can backup mine?
Here's how to backup your RSA keys

Glad you got it working bro. Just for everyone that is new who may read this thread Cyanogen DOES NOT break your 4G keys. Older versions of Clockworkmod Recovery will. Follow the how to backup your RSA keys before doing Anything with the EVO.
Just because 4G is not yet included in Cyanogen Rom's does not mean it breaks your 4g. In fact, thanks to some of our dedicated and smart devs there is an actual Alpha of CM 6.1.2 with 4g and from what I hear it works pretty damn good.
Anyway I just wanted to clear that up because I would not want anyone to think that CM Rom's break your 4G. I am sure the OP meant Clockworkmod Recovery, but said CM in a rush to try to figure out his problem.

thanks for clearing that up .. I'm not sure exactly what I read as I glanced over it and freaked out because I didn't want to ruin my wimax keys .. so thanks for the clarification.
I've been trying to install the 6.1.2 with wimax but I keep getting hung up on the white evo screen, as well as others .. I'm tempted to install CM7 and forget about 4G for the time being as I know toast will get it up and running in the upcoming months.
Hopefully someone can figure out the reason as to why the wimax alpha is hanging at the htc evo screen after installing the kernal.

calm down take a breather us XDA users got your back, OK take out the battery and put it back in then go to the Hboot ( hold power and volume down) then once you get to the Hboot Settings use volume down to get to RECOVERY (i think its the third one) then once you get into Clockwork Recovery scroll down to (Backup and Restore) click then press (Restore) and then choose your Restore file it usually Year-month-day hope i helped you donate pls if i did
BE SURE TO KEEP THE CHARGER IN!!
p.s. if it turns off while its restoring even with the charger in let it boot into recovery mode and let it charge up a bit
incase you still need help gtalk me [email protected]
and p.s. CWM 3.0.0.5 is for gingerbread only
Certain roms require certain versions of clockworkmod. I don't know if this also applies to restoring from backups, though. Which type of rom did you flash?
If he flashed the add on 3.0.0.5 has ext3/ext4 support. Should be able to flash froyo and TB Rome.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
3.0.0.6 supports ext3/ex4 3.0.0.5 only does Gingerbread
Edit: I'm being a dumbass yea what he said was right I'm overly tired and I have to explain to her why I was being a dumbass and trying to flash through fastboot but what I don't understand is why its still stuck at the boot screen

Three options
Option one: (easiest)
Since you flashed 3.0.0.5 you must flash a Gingerbread ROM, (Which you can download from here ). Make sure to flash the G/apps after you flash the ROM.
Option two:
you can flash a 2.x.x.x Recovery image, or flash 3.0.0.6 via script or manually do it via the HBoot.
Option three:
Flash the PD15IMG and start over from ground one.
thank you so much for the advice and help. i could bang my head on the wall for trying to load gorillasens. i shouldve left it alone. once i get home from work i will give it a try again.

Ah. i think i see what happened. You rooted your phone. downloaded Clockwork Rom Manager, then flashed a recovery image (which was version 3.x). then tried to flash a 2.2 ROM.
Okay. so what.....
a common mistake but one that can be avoided by doing a little research.
Clockwork's 3.0.0.5 recovery image is only compatible with Gingerbread (2.3) based ROMs.
Clockwork's 2.x recovery image are only compatible with FroYo (2.2) based ROMs.
gorilla is 2.2 So it's not cannot be flashed by the recovery image you are using.
if that is correct then the text in the recovery image should be orange in color. If that is correct.....If i were in your shoes i'd load CM7 w/ the GAPPS > download CWRM from the markert > scroll to the bottom (all clockwork recoveries) and flash the newest 2.x. then boot into recovery / make sure the text is GREEN, not ORANGE, wipe then flash your GorillaSense.
Can you cite a source, because I've also heard people claim that Clockwork 3 is backwards compatible, but there was no evidence either way...?
How would you go about switching from a 2.2 ROM to a 2.3 ROM? Do you have to backup with CWM 2, then install CWM 3 to install the new ROM? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me...?

3.0.0.5 is not backwards compatible, which is the official 3.x that you download via the Application. 3.0.0.6 which is "beta" flashed via the HBoot is backwards compatible.
It's seriously jacked if you ask me.
to go from lets say CM6 > CM7 one would do a nandroid backup of CM6, then go to CWRM flash the 3.0.0.5 recovery image > boot into recovery and flash the CM7.
now to get back to a 2.2 ROM you have to scroll to the bottom of CWRM app's and flash a 2.x version of the recovery then do your nandroid restore, flash the 2.2 recovery image.
From what i've heard once 3.0.0.6 is finished you can use that for everything.
What a pain...
I'm real sketchy about the Clockwork 3 recoveries for the Nexus, because they've been screwing up partitions (mine included). Has there been any problems with Clockwork 3 on the Glacier?

I haven't had any problems with mine. The only problem that was noted was the 3.0.0.5 prior to the official release wouldn't do Nandroid Backups directly from the application. Some were reporting it work work from the recovery image, but mine never did.
and i have a feeling the reason it's screwing with Partitions is this (CM7/CW3.x) is a Ext4 set up. And CM6/CW2.x is a Ext3 set up.
but since it went official the only problem i've seen is people flashing the the wrong recovery for the wrong ROM. People are flashing 3.x because 3 is higher than 2 so they think it's an upgrade and have no clue on the who/what/when/wheres and whys of what its for.
The partition thing is different for the Nexus, because they are cross compatible to a certain degree. I rolled back to CWM 2, but I can still flash CM7 no probs...
It's interesting to note the differences between the two platforms though (Nexus vs Glacier).

Yea between Google's way of doing thing and HTC, but i'm sure the chip-set has something to do with that. and with the sexy nexi only having 512Mb of memory the factor of tricking the phone to use the SD card has something to do with it i'm sure.
i have the 3.x recovery and i can flash iceglacier which is a 2.2 rom with out any issues. what i can't do is restore my backup from my other phone onto this replacement i just got. i made the backup with the 3.x recovery but i just keep getting stuck at the mytouch bootup screen... gonna try flashing the 2.x recovery and see if it lets me do the restore.
hey there everyone. just giving an update.......phone is still messed up. we tried putting gingerbread on and no go....tried flashing to PD15IMG and starting over. no go, it kept saying that "main version older <bad>" the phone wont go past the htc screen. im going on day 3 and no phone. *sigh* open for more advice. should i just buy another phone?
